Berea College Scholarship for International Students 2027: Tuition-Free, Fully Funded

Berea College covers 100% of tuition, housing, food and fees for every admitted international student, and its new Financial Freedom Pledge makes fall 2027 degrees fully funded. Apply by 30 November 2026.

The Berea College scholarship for international students is really Berea’s whole funding model: every admitted international student gets aid and scholarships covering 100% of tuition, housing, food and fees. Berea, a small liberal arts college in Kentucky, has charged no tuition since 1892, and in August 2026 it went further with its Financial Freedom Pledge, which promises every student entering in fall 2027 a fully funded degree with no loans.

The catch is the competition. Berea admits about 40 or fewer new international students a year, and it rarely takes more than one student from the same country. For fall 2027 entry the international deadline is 30 November 2026, there are no extensions, and you apply through Berea’s own online portal with an English test, school records, an essay, a teacher recommendation and the International Financial Questionnaire.

How Berea’s tuition-free model works

Berea does not charge students tuition. Instead, it combines its own funds with government grants for students who qualify and outside scholarships, and every student works on campus. Berea’s current Labor Grant is $9,000 a year, and that money goes toward tuition.

Until 2026, the No-Tuition Promise covered tuition only. Local news valued it at about $176,000 per student. Many students still paid something for housing and meals, based on family income. The Financial Freedom Pledge removes that gap for students starting in fall 2027: housing, food, fees and supplies are covered too, with no loans.

International students were already funded this way. Berea’s international page says admitted international students receive aid and scholarships covering 100% of tuition, housing, food and fees. The pledge announcement does not mention international students separately, but nothing in it reduces what they already get.

Who is eligible

You can apply as an international student if:

  1. You are not a US citizen or permanent resident.
  2. You meet the university entrance requirements of your home country, with strong secondary school or leaving exam results.
  3. You do not already hold a bachelor’s degree. Berea has no graduate programmes.
  4. You can start in the fall term. New international students cannot start in spring.
  5. You can submit an approved English test. Berea makes no exceptions, even for native speakers.

Financial need counts

Berea’s admission rules are built around students with limited means, and its review weighs financial need along with academics, ambition and recommendations. Berea does not publish an income limit for international applicants. In practice, a strong student from a family that cannot pay for college fits Berea’s purpose better than a wealthy one.

Eligibility edge cases

  • Transfer students: considered, but space is very limited. Priority goes to students with less than 1.5 years of university credit. Send all university transcripts.
  • Past applicants: you can reapply with a new application and all documents.
  • Many applicants from your country: Berea rarely admits more than one student from the same country in a year, so countries with many applicants are especially competitive.
  • Married students or students with children: Berea has no family housing, and Labor Program pay is not enough to support dependants.
  • Nursing: you need TOEFL iBT 83 with 26 in speaking by the first day of your third term to stay in the major.

Writing the Berea essay

Berea looks for ambition and sense of purpose as well as grades. It combines study with paid campus work and admits students with real financial need, so a good essay shows how you work and what you want to build, without listing slogans.

  1. Start with work you have done: at home, on a farm, in a shop, in your community.
  2. Show what it taught you: a skill, a habit, a question you want to study.
  3. Say what you would do at Berea: a major, a Labor Program job you would like, a plan for after graduation.
  4. Be honest about money: it is fine to say your family cannot pay for college abroad.

A sample opening (invented for illustration): “Before school each morning I carried water for our street’s tea stall. I learned which neighbours paid late and why, and that is how I became interested in small loans.”

For the teacher recommendation, choose someone who has seen you work hard over time, and tell them about your family situation and plans so the letter supports your essay.

After you are admitted

  1. Pay the $2,200 deposit: it can be used for certain expenses over your four years. If you cannot pay all of it, ask Berea for an adjustment or extra aid.
  2. Send your passport bio page and medical history form.
  3. Receive your I-20: Berea issues it only after the deposit and forms arrive.
  4. Apply for the F-1 visa: pay the SEVIS fee and attend your visa interview.
  5. Arrive for fall term: you take an English placement exam. Berea has no ESL programme.
  6. Start your Labor Program job: at least 10 hours a week from your first term.

What the Labor Program means for your week

Work is part of the Berea scholarship, not an optional extra. Every student holds a campus job through the Labor Program, and international students do too. Here is how it shapes your time:

  1. Hours: at least 10 a week from your first term; 15 to 20 is normal.
  2. Extra hours: up to 20 a week if you are in good academic standing and have financial need.
  3. Pay: you are paid for hours worked. The $9,000 Labor Grant goes toward tuition, and your wages help with personal costs.
  4. Time: plan your study around a fixed job schedule from your first week.

Berea says its Labor Program earnings are not enough to support family members, so do not plan to send money home.

Costs the Berea scholarship does not cover

  • The F-1 visa fee and SEVIS fee.
  • Flights to Kentucky and home.
  • Personal spending; Berea budgets $1,800 a year.
  • Summer: Berea encourages students to save $1,000 over the summer for the next year.
  • The deposit, unless Berea agrees to adjust it.

Common mistakes

  • Missing 30 November because you assumed a January deadline like other US colleges.
  • Skipping the English test because you studied in English. Berea requires it from everyone.
  • Sending a test score older than two years.
  • Applying for spring entry. International students start only in fall.
  • Applying with a bachelor’s degree already finished.
  • Sending bank statements instead of completing the International Financial Questionnaire.

Who should apply, and who should not

Apply if you have strong results, your family cannot pay for a US degree, and you are happy to work 10 to 20 hours a week on campus while studying in a small town. Berea suits students who want a debt-free degree and like hands-on work.

Look elsewhere if you need a big-city campus, a major Berea does not offer (check its list of majors), family housing, or an English course before you start. If your country sends many applicants, apply to other colleges too, since Berea rarely takes two students from one country.
