Northwestern University admission requirements for international students are the same as for American applicants: the Common App or Coalition application, a transcript, two recommendations, the Northwestern writing supplement and, if English is not your first language, an English test score. SAT and ACT scores are optional. The hard part is the numbers. Northwestern admitted 3,933 of 53,676 first-year applicants for fall 2025, an acceptance rate of 7.3%, and it reads international aid requests on a need-aware basis.
For fall 2027 entry, the Early Decision deadline is 1 November 2026 and Regular Decision closes on 4 January 2027. The 2026-27 cost of attendance is $99,375 before health insurance. If you are admitted with aid, Northwestern meets 100% of your demonstrated need with grants and no loans. Below I cover the acceptance rate, tuition, scholarships, essays and deadlines, plus what international applicants most often get wrong.
Northwestern University at a glance
- University: Northwestern University, a private research university on the shore of Lake Michigan in Evanston, Illinois, with a second campus in downtown Chicago.
- Ranking: #9 (tie) in National Universities, U.S. News 2027 edition, released in September 2026. In the 2026 edition it was #7.
- Acceptance rate: 7.3% for fall 2025 (53,676 applicants, 3,933 admitted, 2,139 enrolled), from Northwestern’s Data Book.
- International aid: need-based only, need-aware admission, 100% of demonstrated need met with grants. No loans and no work requirement in the package.
- Aid forms: CSS Profile (Northwestern code 1565) plus your parents’ tax or income documents.
- Testing: SAT and ACT optional. Northwestern superscores both.
- English: Duolingo, IELTS or TOEFL iBT if English is not your first language or your schooling was not in English. There is no published minimum.
- Application fee: $75 according to the 2024-25 Common Data Set, with a waiver for applicants with financial need.
Northwestern acceptance rate and class profile
Northwestern publishes its admissions numbers in two places: the Common Data Set (CDS) and the Provost’s Data Book. The Data Book already has the fall 2025 entering class. The CDS for 2024-25 has more detail on scores and international students.
| Entry year | Applicants | Admitted | Acceptance rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fall 2025 | 53,676 | 3,933 | 7.3% |
| Fall 2024 | 49,474 | 3,806 | 7.7% |
| Fall 2023 | 51,769 | 3,739 | 7.2% |
| Fall 2022 | 51,558 | 3,695 | 7.2% |
| Fall 2021 | 47,636 | 3,321 | 7.0% |
From the 2024-25 CDS (fall 2024 entry):
- Early Decision received 5,154 applications and admitted 1,186, about 23%. Regular Decision is far harder.
- 69% of enrolled first-years sent a test score (46% SAT, 23% ACT). The middle 50% SAT composite was 1510-1560 and the middle ACT composite was 34-35.
- Northwestern had 1,068 international (nonresident) undergraduates out of 9,060, so roughly one student in nine is from abroad. 275 of them were first-year students.
- 314 international undergraduates received need-based institutional aid, averaging $74,103 each.
Northwestern says it has no quota for any country. You compete with the whole international pool, and the aid request counts, which brings us to money.
Northwestern tuition for international students (2026-27)
International students pay the same tuition as Americans. These are Northwestern’s official 2026-27 figures for an undergraduate living on campus:
| Item | 2026-27 amount |
|---|---|
| Tuition | $71,802 |
| Fees (health and wellness, activity, athletics) | $1,260 |
| Housing and meals | $22,941 |
| Books | $1,239 |
| Personal expenses | $2,079 |
| Published total (includes a $54 federal loan fee) | $99,375 |
| Student health insurance (not in the total) | $5,996 |
| Transportation | Varies |
International students must enrol in the Northwestern student health insurance plan, so a family paying in full should plan for about $105,000 a year before flights. Tuition rose 3.5% from 2025-26, and a similar rise each year is a fair planning assumption.
Northwestern scholarships and financial aid for international students
Northwestern does not run a separate merit scholarship competition for international first-years. Aid is need-based. Here is how it works for you:
- Need-aware admission. Northwestern says it is need-aware for international students. Asking for aid, and how much you ask for, can affect your admission decision.
- Full need met. If you are admitted with aid, Northwestern meets 100% of demonstrated need for four years. The budget covers tuition, housing, meals, fees, health insurance, books, personal costs, visa renewal and a travel allowance.
- Grants only. International packages contain no loans and no required work. You may still take an on-campus job in places like Dining Services or the Libraries.
- Apply in year one or never. International students who do not apply for aid as first-years cannot apply in later years. Northwestern also does not offer need-based aid to international transfer students.
- No currency cover. Northwestern will not replace money lost to exchange-rate swings or a sponsor pulling out.
Only “a small group” of international first-years get need-based aid each year, in Northwestern’s own words. If your family can pay the full cost, ticking “no” on the aid question removes one hurdle. If you cannot attend without aid, tick “yes”. There is no point being admitted to a place you cannot afford.

How to apply for aid: CSS Profile and documents
- Tick the aid box: say yes to financial aid on your Common App or Coalition application. If you forgot, email nuinternational@northwestern.edu before the aid deadline.
- CSS Profile: file it on the College Board site using code 1565. Materials can go in from 1 October.
- Can’t file the CSS Profile? If it is not available in your country or the fee is a real hardship, complete Northwestern’s International Student Application for Financial Assistance and upload it through the Undergraduate Financial Aid document portal.
- Parents’ income documents: send your parents’ latest national tax returns. Where there is no tax return, send an official earnings letter from each parent’s employer with signature or seal. Translate everything into English, and state the exchange rate if you convert to dollars.
- Meet the aid deadline: 1 December 2026 for Early Decision and 1 February 2027 for Regular Decision.
Testing and English requirements
Northwestern is test optional. You can self-report SAT or ACT scores; if you enrol, you then send official scores. With a middle 50% SAT of 1510-1560, a score below about 1450 usually adds little, and you may do better leaving it off.
English proficiency is required if your first or main language is not English, or if your secondary schooling was not taught in English. Northwestern accepts:
| Test | Northwestern rule |
|---|---|
| TOEFL iBT | Accepted; code 1565; MyBest scores not reviewed |
| IELTS (including IELTS Indicator) | Accepted |
| Duolingo English Test | Accepted |
| TOEFL ITP Plus for China | Not accepted |
Northwestern publishes no minimum score, but it says competitive applicants usually score high in every section. Scores must come straight from the testing agency, and Northwestern does not superscore English tests. Students from countries like Nigeria, Ghana or Kenya whose whole schooling was in English should check the language-of-instruction rule before paying for a test they may not need.
What goes into the Northwestern application
- Common App or Coalition with Scoir application, with the main personal essay
- Northwestern writing supplement
- Secondary school transcript, with certified English translations if needed (any translation service is accepted)
- Counselor recommendation and one academic teacher recommendation; you may add one more letter
- Activities list
- English test score if required; SAT or ACT if you choose
- Optional interview through InitialView for international students; skipping it carries no penalty
- Arts supplements for Bienen School of Music and some theatre and film programmes
Finish your national secondary programme. Northwestern says a partly completed programme is a disadvantage, and you will need final exam results (WAEC, KCSE, A-levels or similar) if you enrol.
Northwestern supplemental essays for 2026-27
Northwestern’s 2026-27 writing supplement, as it appears on the Common App, has one required question and an optional section:
- Required, 300 words: how your background (identity, school, community, household) has shaped the way you would engage with Northwestern’s community.
- Choose one or two, under 200 words each: what you would paint on The Rock; a class, research project or creative effort you would dream up; the student communities you would join; what draws you to the Evanston and Chicago location; how your background adds to the range of views on campus.
How to write them
The required essay is about context. Pick one concrete part of your life, show what it taught you to do, then point to a specific Northwestern setting where you would do it. Admissions officers read thousands of “my culture is diverse” essays; they remember the student who explains how running a family shop in Kumasi taught her to price things and argue with suppliers.
For the short answers, specificity wins. The Rock prompt rewards a real message you care about. The “dream up a class” prompt is your chance to name two departments and show you understand the quarter system’s pace. Use one optional answer well rather than two thin ones.
Sample opening (for illustration only): “In my house in Enugu, the generator decided when homework happened. By fourteen I could read our fuel gauge better than my maths textbook, and that is why I want to study energy policy where engineers and economists share a classroom.”
Northwestern deadlines for fall 2027 entry
| Round | Application due | Aid documents due | Decision |

Deadlines are 11:59 pm in your local time. Early Decision admits pay their deposit by 1 February 2027 and Regular Decision admits reply by 1 May 2027. If you need an exception to a deadline or a document rule, Northwestern asks international applicants to email nuinternational@northwestern.edu before 15 November.
Aid deadline
If you apply Early Decision on 1 November 2026, your CSS Profile and parents’ income documents are due by 1 December 2026. International students who skip aid in their first year cannot apply for it later.
Majors and academic strengths
Northwestern runs on a quarter system with six undergraduate schools: Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences, McCormick School of Engineering, Medill School of Journalism, the School of Communication, the School of Education and Social Policy, and the Bienen School of Music. You apply to one school, though many students combine majors across schools.
Medill is one of the best-known journalism schools in the US. The School of Communication is strong in theatre, film and performance studies. McCormick’s engineering and Weinberg’s economics and sciences draw many international students, and the Feinberg School of Medicine is on the Chicago campus.
Campus and city life
The Evanston campus sits on the Lake Michigan shoreline, and Chicago is a short train ride south. That gives you a quiet suburban campus with a major city’s jobs, internships and airports close by. Winters are cold and long, so budget for a proper coat and boots in your first term. The Rock, a painted boulder in the middle of campus, is a student tradition that the essay prompt refers to.
Graduate admissions in brief
Graduate study works differently. Each programme sets its own requirements and deadlines, and the main schools (The Graduate School for PhDs and many master’s degrees, Kellogg for business, Pritzker for law, Feinberg for medicine, Medill for journalism) run their own applications. PhD applicants are usually considered for funding inside the programme. Master’s students generally pay their own way. Check English test minimums on each programme’s page, because they differ.
What happens after you apply
- Check the portal: you get access to Northwestern’s applicant portal within days. Use it to see missing documents.
- Optional interview: book InitialView early if you want one.
- Decision: mid-December for ED, March for RD. Admitted aid applicants get the aid offer with or soon after the decision.
- Commit and pay: ED admits must withdraw other applications and pay the deposit.
- I-20 and visa: after you commit, Northwestern’s international office asks for proof of funding to issue the I-20. You then pay the SEVIS fee and book an F-1 visa interview at the US embassy in your country.
Common mistakes international applicants make
- Applying Early Decision without checking the aid offer can be compared. ED is binding, so run the net price calculator first.
- Ticking “no aid” to improve the odds, then finding the family cannot pay.
- Missing the CSS Profile deadline because the admissions deadline was met.
- Sending self-reported English scores. Only official scores count.
- Writing a generic “why Northwestern” answer that could fit any city university.
- Leaving secondary school early for a gap year without telling the admissions office.
Costs the aid package may not cover
Even with a full-need package, set money aside for:
- The F-1 visa application fee and the SEVIS fee, paid before you travel
- English test, CSS Profile and transcript evaluation fees during the application
- Warm winter clothing
- Losses from exchange-rate changes, which Northwestern does not cover
- Summer housing if you stay in the US between years
Northwestern compared with peer universities
| University | U.S. News 2027 rank | International aid | Our guide |
|---|---|---|---|
| Northwestern | #9 (tie) | Need-aware; full need met | This page |
| Rice University | #16 (tie) | Need-aware; full need met | Rice guide |
| Vanderbilt University | #16 (tie) | Need-aware; limited need-based aid plus merit awards | Vanderbilt guide |
| Duke University | #8 (tie) | Need-based aid for international students | Duke scholarships |
| Yale University | #4 | Need-blind for all applicants | Yale scholarships |
If your family needs a large aid package, also look at need-blind colleges such as Amherst and MIT.
Who should apply
Apply if you have top grades in a demanding curriculum, a clear academic interest that fits one of Northwestern’s schools, and either the means to pay or a strong case for aid. Journalism, communication, engineering and music applicants with real work to show do well here.
I would think twice if you need full aid and your profile is good but not exceptional. Need-aware review makes Northwestern harder for you than its 7% headline suggests. Spread your list across need-blind schools and universities with merit scholarships.
Frequently asked questions
What is Northwestern’s acceptance rate for international students?
Northwestern does not publish a separate international acceptance rate. The overall rate was 7.3% for fall 2025, and international applicants who ask for aid face a need-aware review, which makes it harder.
How much is Northwestern tuition for international students?
Tuition for 2026-27 is $71,802, the same for every undergraduate. With housing, meals, fees, books and personal costs the published total is $99,375, plus $5,996 for student health insurance.
Does Northwestern give full scholarships to international students?
Yes, through need-based aid. Admitted international students who applied for aid get 100% of demonstrated need met with grants and no loans, which can cover the full cost for a low-income family.
What TOEFL or IELTS score does Northwestern require?
Northwestern sets no minimum TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo score. It says competitive applicants usually score high in all sections, and scores must be sent officially.
