UVA Engineering Graduate Admission 2027 for International Students: Ranking, GRE, Funding and Deadlines

UVA Engineering Graduate Admission 2027 for International Students: Ranking, GRE, Funding and Deadlines
UVA Engineering is tied at No. 42 in U.S. News 2026. Here are the GRE-optional policy, TOEFL 90 (20 per section) and IELTS 6.5 minimums, the English-medium waiver, funded research MS and PhD places, tuition and the fall 2027 deadlines for international applicants.

UVA engineering graduate admission for international students is handled program by program inside the University of Virginia’s School of Engineering and Applied Science, through one online application. You upload unofficial transcripts, a resume, short essays and recommendation letters, and you need a TOEFL or IELTS score unless your bachelor’s degree was taught entirely in English. The GRE is optional for every programme, and the school’s admission page currently says there is no application fee. For fall 2027, research MS and PhD applications are due around mid-December 2026, and applying by 16 December puts you in line for fellowship nominations.

UVA Engineering is tied at No. 42 in the U.S. News 2026 Best Engineering Schools ranking, level with Pitt’s Swanson School. What sets it apart for international applicants is funding: two departments say most of their MS and PhD students receive full tuition, fees, health insurance and a stipend. The course-based Master of Engineering is the exception and is mostly self-funded.

UVA engineering ranking

The Cavalier Daily reported in April 2026 that UVA’s graduate schools held steady in the new U.S. News list, with engineering tied at No. 42 alongside Pitt. In the same edition ASU’s Fulton Schools sit just above at No. 41 and Vanderbilt at No. 39. UVA Engineering is smaller than most schools at this rank, which works in your favour for a PhD: faculty know their students, and admission is decided inside each programme by the people who would supervise you.

Departments and graduate programmes

UVA Engineering offers graduate degrees in nine programmes, plus online master’s degrees through Virginia Engineering Online (VEO).

ProgrammeMain graduate options
Biomedical EngineeringMS, PhD
Chemical EngineeringMS, PhD; ME online through VEO
Civil and Environmental EngineeringMS (thesis), PhD, ME on Grounds and online
Computer EngineeringMS, PhD
Computer ScienceMS, PhD, Master of Computer Science
Electrical EngineeringMS, PhD; ME online through VEO
Materials Science and EngineeringMS, PhD, Master of Materials Science and Engineering
Mechanical and Aerospace EngineeringMS (thesis), PhD, ME on Grounds and online
Systems EngineeringMS, PhD, Accelerated Master’s Program; ME online through VEO

The VEO online master’s is a part-time professional degree. It does not support an F-1 student visa, so pick the on-Grounds version if you want to study in the United States. You may apply to at most two UVA Engineering programmes, each with its own application.

UVA engineering admission requirements for international students

  1. Degree: a bachelor’s degree from a recognised institution. A degree outside engineering can be accepted, but any remedial courses are taken without credit.
  2. Grades: at least a B average.
  3. Unofficial transcripts: uploaded to the application. Official transcripts are required only after you accept an offer, and the offer is not binding until they are verified.
  4. Resume: with degrees, GPA, class rank, research with advisers’ names, publications, work experience and awards.
  5. Essays: short answers to UVA’s prompts (see the statement section below).
  6. Recommendation letters: at least two in Civil and Environmental Engineering; most applicants send three. Interfolio is accepted.
  7. English test: TOEFL or IELTS unless exempt.
  8. GRE: optional; code 5820.

UVA does not ask for a WES evaluation. The school reviews unofficial transcripts itself and checks the official versions after you accept. UVA’s pages do not address three-year bachelor’s degrees, so if yours is three years long, write to the graduate contact for your programme before applying.

Application fee

The graduate admission page says there is no application fee. Department pages show the standard fee as $85, waived automatically for 2025 and 2026 admissions. Applying to a second programme costs an extra fee. Check the fee screen when you open the fall 2027 application, because UVA has not said in writing that the waiver continues for 2027.

English test minimums and waivers

TestMinimum
TOEFL iBT90 overall, with at least 20 in reading, listening, speaking and writing
TOEFL paper-based600
IELTS Academic6.5 in each section
Duolingo English TestNot accepted (Civil and Environmental, Mechanical and Aerospace)
PTE AcademicNot accepted (Civil and Environmental)
  • Scores must be less than two years old. UVA’s TOEFL code is B875.
  • You are exempt if your bachelor’s degree was earned entirely at an institution where English is the primary language of instruction, including universities outside the United States. Upload proof, such as a letter from your registrar.
  • A master’s degree taught in English does not exempt you automatically, though Mechanical and Aerospace will review a waiver request.
  • Note the sectional rule: a 95 overall with 18 in speaking falls short of UVA’s minimum.

For many applicants from Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and other countries where university teaching is in English, the waiver route is the most useful rule on this page. Ask your university for a medium-of-instruction letter early.

GRE policy

The GRE is optional for all UVA Engineering programmes, and the school waived it for all 2026 applications. The graduate admission page still strongly recommends it for international applicants, because a quantitative score helps reviewers compare grading systems they do not know well. If your CGPA is on a 5.0 scale or your university is not well known in the United States, I would sit the GRE. Scores are valid for five years.

UVA engineering deadlines for fall 2027

UVA had not posted fall 2027 dates when I checked, so the table rolls each fall 2026 date forward one year (based on this year’s date; confirm on the official page when the call opens). UVA says MS and PhD applications are often reviewed on a rolling basis, depending on whether faculty need research assistants, but applications received before 16 December are considered for supplemental fellowship nominations.

ProgrammeFall 2027Spring 2028
Civil and Environmental, MS and PhD15 December 202615 September 2027
Civil and Environmental, ME (on Grounds)15 July 202721 November 2027
Mechanical and Aerospace, MS and PhD16 December 202630 September 2027
Mechanical and Aerospace, ME (international applicants)20 March 202730 September 2027
Computer Science, MS and Master of Computer Science30 January 2027Check the department page
Materials Science, Master of Materials Science and Engineering16 January 202730 September 2027
Other PhD programmesBetween 15 December 2026 and 6 January 202715 to 30 September 2027

UVA’s admission page lists its deadline blocks without naming every programme, so for Biomedical, Chemical, Electrical, Computer and Systems Engineering, confirm your exact date on the programme page. If you want funding, aim for the first half of December whatever the date says.

Funding date

Apply before 16 December 2026 if you want to be considered for UVA Engineering’s supplemental fellowships. Later applications can still be admitted, but UVA warns that late applicants may have a lower chance of funding.

PhD and research MS funding at UVA engineering

UVA funds research students through graduate research assistantships (GRAs), graduate teaching assistantships (GTAs), departmental and school fellowships, and outside fellowships. Civil and Environmental and Mechanical and Aerospace both state that most of their MS and PhD students receive full tuition, fees, health insurance and a stipend, with only a small number self-funded.

  • Assistantships and fellowships ordinarily cover all tuition and fees.
  • Health insurance is required for all students and is part of the funded package.
  • International applicants are considered for assistantships and fellowships at the same time as U.S. applicants.
  • Funding decisions come with the admission decision.
  • Teaching assistantships in Mechanical and Aerospace are only open to current students, so new students are funded through research posts or fellowships.
  • School and programme fellowships are paid for by donors. UVA names no specific fellowship for new international students; NSF fellowships are limited to U.S. citizens and permanent residents.

UVA Engineering does not publish its stipend amount. It says stipends are competitive with other universities. Ask the faculty member or graduate director for the 12-month figure once you have an offer.

Master’s funding: what to expect

The research MS is the degree to aim for if you need money, because in some departments it is funded on the same terms as the PhD. The course-based Master of Engineering is different. ME students are not eligible for research or teaching assistantships. Civil and Environmental considers top on-Grounds ME applicants automatically for scholarships of up to $5,000, which covers only a small share of the cost. The Master of Computer Science also tends to be self-funded.

UVA engineering tuition and costs

UVA does not publish a graduate engineering cost of attendance page for international students. The figures below come from UVA’s 2025-26 tuition and fees report and the International Studies Office’s 2026-27 living-cost minimum.

ItemAmount
Master’s tuition, non-Virginian, 2025-26$34,822
Computer science master’s tuition, non-Virginian, 2025-26$39,926
Required fees (main university fee plus engineering activity fee), 2025-26$4,424
Living costs including health insurance, 2026-27 minimum per semester$12,872
Health insurance within that figure, per semester$1,985

By my arithmetic, a self-funded engineering master’s comes to about $39,246 in tuition and fees plus about $25,744 for two semesters of living costs, or roughly $65,000 a year. Tuition for 2026-27 will be higher than the 2025-26 rates, and Charlottesville rent can push living costs above UVA’s minimum. Confirm the current figure with the Student Financial Services office before you prepare your proof of funds.

STEM OPT after a UVA engineering degree

F-1 students get 12 months of Optional Practical Training after graduating, and graduates of degrees on the Department of Homeland Security STEM list can apply for a further 24 months. Engineering and computer science degrees normally qualify. Check the CIP code of your exact programme with UVA’s International Studies Office, especially for systems or interdisciplinary degrees.

Admission statistics

UVA Engineering does not publish acceptance rates or average scores for admitted graduate students. It also says there are no set minimum test scores to apply. The criteria it lists are research readiness, productivity, leadership, persistence, creativity, collaboration and academic ability. Treat acceptance rates on third-party sites as guesses.

How to contact potential PhD advisers at UVA

UVA says MS and PhD admission depends partly on faculty needs for research assistants, and Civil and Environmental tells applicants who want funding to contact faculty in their research areas. That makes a well-aimed email worth sending.

  1. Pick two or three faculty: from the department research pages. Read a recent paper from each.
  2. Write in October or November: before the mid-December deadlines.
  3. Keep it short: who you are, one concrete result from your own work, why their group, and one question about openings.
  4. Attach a one-page CV: include your grading scale and GRE scores if you have them.
  5. Follow up once: after about ten days.

A sample opening, for illustration: “Dear Professor [Name], I am applying to the UVA civil and environmental engineering PhD for fall 2027 before the 15 December deadline. In my final-year project at [University] I modelled [process] and reduced [error or cost] by [amount], and your group’s work on [topic] is the area I want to research. Will you be taking a new graduate research assistant next fall?”

How to write the UVA engineering statement of purpose

UVA asks for several short essays in place of one long statement. The prompts cover who you are beyond your scores and transcripts, your plans for graduate study and career, your research and leadership experience, any hardship you have overcome, and how your research interests fit the faculty.

  • Answer each prompt directly. Reviewers read across several short essays, so do not paste one long essay into every box.
  • In the research answer, describe what you did yourself, the method and the result, and name your adviser.
  • In the fit answer, name two or three UVA faculty and say in a sentence why each one matches your interests.
  • Use the hardship prompt to explain a weak semester, a gap or an unusual grading scale. Keep it factual and short.
  • For leadership, a student society, a tutoring role or a team project counts if you show what changed because of you.
  • End your plans answer with a specific goal: a research area, an industry or an academic career.

Common mistakes international applicants make

  • Missing a sectional TOEFL score: UVA needs 90 overall and at least 20 in every section.
  • Sending Duolingo: the departments I checked do not accept it.
  • Skipping the English waiver: if your degree was taught fully in English, upload proof and save the test fee.
  • Applying to the ME expecting funding: ME students cannot hold assistantships.
  • Applying after 16 December: you may still be admitted, but with less chance of a fellowship.
  • Converting your CGPA yourself: upload your transcript as issued with its grading scale. Put the original GPA and class of degree on your resume.
  • Three-year degrees: UVA does not state a rule. Ask before you apply.
  • Mailing documents: UVA strongly discourages mailing anything you can upload.

Costs not covered by funding

  • English and GRE test fees.
  • The fee for a second programme application.
  • Visa and SEVIS fees, flights, and a deposit on housing in Charlottesville.
  • Summer living costs if your stipend covers only the academic year; ask whether yours is 12 months.
  • A car or transport, since public transport around Charlottesville is limited.
  • Insurance and living costs for a spouse or children, which a stipend is not designed to cover.

Who should apply to UVA engineering

I would put UVA high on the list if you want a funded research MS or PhD and have research experience you can describe in detail. The funding pattern in its departments is generous for a school of this size, and the GRE is optional. It suits applicants with a solid B average or better and good English section scores. If you want a cheap course-based master’s, UVA’s ME at roughly $65,000 a year is expensive, and Duolingo-only applicants will need to sit TOEFL or IELTS.
