Pitt Swanson engineering graduate admission for international students runs through EngineeringCAS, the online application the Swanson School of Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh uses for its MS and PhD programmes. You upload unofficial transcripts, two or three recommendation letters depending on the department, and an English test score unless you hold a recent degree from an English-speaking country. The GRE is optional across the school. For fall 2027, the deadlines for funding consideration fall between 1 December 2026 and 15 January 2027, and most departments keep accepting self-funded applicants until 1 April 2027.
Swanson is tied at No. 42 in the U.S. News 2026 Best Engineering Schools ranking, level with the University of Virginia. Read the funding rules closely. PhD assistantships pay a stipend and a tuition scholarship, but Pitt says master’s students are generally not considered for funded appointments, and the university’s own estimate for a year of engineering study was $78,175 in 2025-26.

Pitt Swanson engineering ranking
The Swanson School announced in April 2026 that it had moved up in the U.S. News graduate rankings. In the 2026 Best Engineering Schools list it shares No. 42 with UVA’s School of Engineering and Applied Science. For context, Carnegie Mellon, a few minutes away in the same city, sits at No. 10. For a PhD, what decides fit is whether two or three Pitt professors work on the problem you want to study, and for a master’s, whether you can carry the cost.
Departments and graduate programmes
Swanson describes itself as six departments offering more than 40 graduate programmes. Each department admits to its own MS and PhD tracks, and several interdisciplinary programmes sit across them.
| Department or programme | Main graduate options |
|---|---|
| Bioengineering | PhD, research (thesis) MS, professional (non-thesis) MS |
| Chemical and Petroleum Engineering | MS, PhD |
| Civil and Environmental Engineering | MS, PhD |
| Electrical and Computer Engineering | MS, PhD |
| Industrial Engineering | MS, PhD |
| Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science | MS and PhD in Mechanical Engineering and in Materials Science and Engineering |
| Interdisciplinary | Computational Modeling and Simulation, Nuclear Engineering, MS in Sustainable Engineering |
| Joint degrees | MBA and MS in Engineering, MD-PhD, DPT-PhD |
In Bioengineering you can earn an MS on the way to the PhD, or apply to the PhD after starting the MS. Applicants whose first degree is in a physical or life science rather than engineering may be considered there, though they usually need extra coursework.
Pitt Swanson engineering admission requirements for international students
- Online application: submitted through EngineeringCAS. You can save it and return later.
- Transcripts: unofficial copies from every university you attended, uploaded to the application. Records not in English need a certified English translation alongside the original.
- Recommendation letters: three for Bioengineering, Chemical and Petroleum, and Civil and Environmental Engineering; two for every other programme. Letters go through the Liaison Letters portal, on letterhead, signed, with the writer’s phone number and email, and at least one should come from a lecturer at the last school you attended full time.
- English test: TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo, unless exempt.
- GRE: optional; institution code 2927 if you send it.
- Degree level: a bachelor’s degree equal to a four-year U.S. bachelor’s, as determined by Pitt.
- Grades: Civil and Environmental Engineering asks for a 3.00 average for the MS and 3.30 for the PhD on a 4.00 scale. Other departments do not state a minimum on the pages I checked.
The school’s pages do not list the application fee amount; it is shown inside EngineeringCAS. Fee waivers are granted case by case on qualifications and financial need, and you request one with your unofficial transcripts and CV. A waiver is not an offer of admission. Pitt also does not name a credential evaluation service such as WES. Swanson evaluates your records itself, and official transcripts are only collected after you are admitted, by the Friday of your first week of classes.
English test minimums and waivers
| Test | Minimum for admission | English course recommended below |
|---|---|---|
| TOEFL iBT (taken before 21 January 2026) | 81 | 100 |
| TOEFL iBT (new 1 to 6 scale, from 21 January 2026) | 4.5 | 5.0 |
| IELTS Academic | 6.5 | 7.5 |
| Duolingo English Test | 120 | 140 |
- These are university minimums; a department may ask for more.
- Scores below the minimum, missing or expired mean no admission. A score must still be valid on the first day of your first term.
- TOEFL MyBest Scores and TOEFL Essentials are not accepted. TOEFL iBT Home Edition is.
- Codes: TOEFL institution 2927, department 69. For IELTS choose “University of Pittsburgh-Swanson School of Engineering”. For Duolingo, send results to the Swanson School.
- Waiver: a recent degree from a regionally accredited U.S. institution or an institution in another English-speaking country. Pitt does not publish a country list on this page, so if your degree is from Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya or another Commonwealth country, ask the admissions office in writing before you skip the test.
- Teaching assistants and teaching fellows who are not native speakers take a spoken English test on arrival. Fail it and you get a non-teaching assignment plus required coursework.
GRE policy by department
The Swanson admissions page lists the GRE as optional for the whole school. Civil and Environmental Engineering repeats that it is optional but suggests you consider sending it. Industrial Engineering says scores are encouraged but optional. Bioengineering sets no minimum and treats the GRE and grades as one factor among several. Electrical and Computer Engineering and Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science do not add their own rule to the school policy. If your grades are uneven, a strong quantitative score can help; if your grades are strong, I would put the money toward the English test or the application fee instead.
Pitt Swanson engineering deadlines for fall 2027
Every department has a “financial consideration” date. Apply by it if you want to be considered for an assistantship; apply later and you are reviewed on a rolling basis, usually without funding.
| Department | Fall 2027, funding consideration | Fall 2027, not seeking funding | Spring 2028 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bioengineering | 1 December 2026 | 1 April 2027 | 15 October 2027 |
| Chemical and Petroleum Engineering | 1 December 2026 (priority); 15 January 2027 | 1 April 2027 | 15 October 2027 |
| Civil and Environmental Engineering | 15 January 2027 | 1 April 2027 | 15 October 2027 |
| Electrical and Computer Engineering | 15 December 2026 | 1 April 2027 | 15 October 2027 |
| Industrial Engineering | 15 January 2027 | 1 April 2027 | 15 October 2027 |
| Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science | 1 December 2026 | 1 April 2027 | 15 October 2027 |
| Computational Modeling and Simulation | Not yet set by Pitt | 1 April 2027 | 15 October 2027 |
The spring 2027 round closed on 15 October 2026. Industrial Engineering’s own admissions page gives 31 January for PhD assistantship applicants and suggests international MS applicants finish by 15 April, which differs from the school table; I would work to the earlier date. Bioengineering’s FAQ also states 1 December for its PhD and research MS. Chemical and Petroleum Engineering reviews applications that arrive after its priority date for funding on a first come, first served basis until 15 January.
Funding warning
Pitt decides financial aid separately from admission. If you want an assistantship, tick the funding option on the application and submit before your department’s financial consideration date. An offer of admission on its own carries no money.
PhD funding at Pitt Swanson engineering
Swanson offers “a limited number of highly competitive” teaching and research assistantships, mainly at PhD level, and each department makes its own funding decisions. Appointments come as fellowships, traineeships, teaching assistantships or fellowships, and graduate student researcher posts. Industrial Engineering states that only PhD students are considered for funding.
Pitt sets university minimum stipends. The rates effective 1 January 2026 are below; Pitt had not posted 2026-27 figures when I checked.
| Appointment | Minimum stipend per term | Two terms (my arithmetic) |
|---|---|---|
| Graduate Student Researcher (GSR) | $10,557.50 | $21,115 |
| Graduate Student Assistant (GSA) | $10,557.50 | $21,115 |
| Teaching Assistant (TA) | $11,341.63 | $22,683 |
| Teaching Fellow (TF) | $11,792.63 | $23,585 |
Every one of these appointments includes a full or partial tuition scholarship covering most fees, and individual UPMC Health Plan cover at no cost to you. Departments can pay above the minimum, and summer pay depends on your adviser’s grant, so ask about both when you receive an offer.
Named fellowships and scholarships
The Swanson funding page does not name a school fellowship open to new international applicants. It points to the Provost’s list of university fellowships and to external awards. Pitt2Pitt helps graduating Pitt seniors staying on for a master’s, so it does not apply to you. The NSF Graduate Research Fellowship, which several Swanson students hold, is limited to U.S. citizens, nationals and permanent residents. Your realistic route is a departmental assistantship, or a scholarship from your own government or employer.
Master’s funding: what to expect
Pitt’s deadline page says MS students are generally not considered for funded teaching or research appointments. Plan your master’s as self-funded. Pitt issues the visa document only after you show adequate financial support, so you need proof of the full first-year cost before you can travel.
Pitt Swanson engineering tuition and costs
Pitt’s Office of International Services publishes the amount international students must show for the visa. The latest engineering figures I could read are for 2025-26:
| Item (Swanson graduate, per year) | 2025-26 estimate |
|---|---|
| Tuition and fees (out-of-state, full time) | $51,160 |
| Living expenses | $24,240 |
| Health insurance (required) | $2,775 |
| Total | $78,175 |
| Each dependant (spouse or child) | add $6,725, excluding insurance |
Pitt has published 2026-27 tuition on its tuition site, but I could not read the Swanson out-of-state line, and OIS itself warns that actual costs run higher than its estimate. Budget at least $80,000 for a self-funded year in 2026-27 and confirm the exact figure on the tuition site before you show bank statements.
STEM OPT after a Pitt engineering degree
F-1 students get 12 months of Optional Practical Training after a degree, and graduates of programmes on the Department of Homeland Security STEM list can apply for a further 24 months. Engineering degrees are normally on that list, which gives up to three years of U.S. work after graduation. Check the CIP code of your exact programme with Pitt’s Office of International Services before you enrol, especially for joint or interdisciplinary degrees.
Admission statistics
Swanson does not publish a school-wide acceptance rate or admitted-student averages on the pages I checked. Bioengineering says it posts averages for recently admitted students on its own site, and it does not pre-screen applicants. Treat any acceptance rate you see on third-party sites with caution.
How to contact potential PhD advisers at Pitt
Because funding is decided by departments and many research assistantships come from individual grants, a short, specific email to a professor can help. Bioengineering says admission depends on how well your interests fit its faculty, so fit is worth showing early.
- Shortlist two or three faculty: use the department research pages and read one recent paper from each.
- Write in October or November: before the 1 December and 15 December funding dates.
- Keep it to five or six sentences: who you are, one result from your own work, why their group, and one question.
- Attach a one-page CV: not your full transcript.
- Follow up once: after about ten days. Silence is common and is not a rejection.
A sample opening, for illustration: “Dear Professor [Name], I am applying to the Pitt Bioengineering PhD for fall 2027 before the 1 December funding date. In my final-year project at [University] I built [device or model] to measure [outcome], and your lab’s recent paper on [topic] is close to what I want to work on next. Do you expect to take a new graduate student researcher next fall?”
How to write the Pitt Swanson statement of purpose
- Open with the research area or engineering problem you want to work on, in one or two sentences.
- Describe one or two projects in detail: what you did yourself, the method, and the result in numbers.
- Name the Pitt faculty or labs that match you, and say why, in a sentence each.
- Say whether you want the research MS, the professional MS or the PhD, and why that track fits your plan.
- If you are asking for a teaching assistantship, mention tutoring or lab demonstrating, since TAs face a spoken English test on arrival.
- Explain a weak semester or a gap in a line or two, then move on.
- Close with what you want to do after the degree.
Common mistakes international applicants make
- Missing the funding date: applying in March still gets you reviewed, but usually without an assistantship.
- Forgetting to request funding: aid is separate from admission, so tick the option on the application.
- Assuming an English waiver: Pitt’s page does not list exempt countries. Get written confirmation before relying on a degree from Nigeria, Ghana or Kenya.
- Applying with a three-year degree without asking: Pitt requires the equivalent of a four-year U.S. bachelor’s, as it decides. Holders of three-year degrees from India, the UK system or elsewhere should email the department first.
- Converting your CGPA yourself: upload the transcript as issued, with the grading scale. A 4.50 or 5.00 scale should not be rescaled by hand in the application.
- Weak letters: letters must be on letterhead, signed and carry contact details. A generic letter typed on plain paper may hold up your file.
- Sending a test score that expires early: it must still be valid on your first day of class.
Costs not covered by funding
- The application fee and test fees, unless you win a waiver.
- Fees not covered by a partial tuition scholarship.
- Summer living costs if your appointment covers two terms only.
- Visa and SEVIS fees, flights, and a rent deposit in Pittsburgh.
- Winter clothing, which matters in western Pennsylvania.
- Health insurance and $6,725 a year in visa funds for each dependant.
Who should apply to Pitt Swanson engineering
I would apply to Pitt for a PhD in bioengineering or a field linked to the university’s medical centre, where the school works closely with the university’s medical centre, and for chemical, petroleum, civil or materials research. It also suits applicants who want a ranked school without a GRE. A self-funded master’s at about $78,000 a year is a heavy bet, so only take that route if you have the money or a sponsor, or if you plan to use the full STEM OPT period to recover the cost.
