Virginia Tech Engineering Graduate Admission 2027 for International Students: Ranking, GRE, Funding and Deadlines

Virginia Tech Engineering Graduate Admission 2027 for International Students: Ranking, GRE, Funding and Deadlines
Virginia Tech engineering graduate admission for fall 2027: $75 fee, GRE optional in ME and ECE, an English waiver for English-taught degrees, January funding deadlines and a $65,284 cost estimate for graduate students in Blacksburg.

Virginia Tech engineering graduate admission for international students runs through the Virginia Tech Graduate School application, and each department in the College of Engineering sets its own deadlines. The fee is $75, the GRE is optional in Mechanical Engineering and Electrical and Computer Engineering and not required in Computer Science, and the key fall 2027 dates are 4 January 2027 for Mechanical Engineering funding priority and 15 January 2027 for ECE PhD funding.

Virginia Tech is one of the few US schools that waives the English test for anyone whose bachelor’s was taught in English, provided the transcript shows it. That helps many African applicants. Mechanical Engineering says it funds all its PhD students, and graduate assistants who earn enough in a term have the out-of-state part of their tuition waived. All facts below were checked on Virginia Tech pages on 29 October 2026 unless another source is named.

Virginia Tech engineering ranking

Virginia Tech News reports that the College of Engineering is tied for No. 32 in the U.S. News 2026 Best Graduate Schools engineering list, released on 7 April 2026. The university did not name the schools it shares the place with. Its graduate Computer Science programme, part of the College of Engineering, is No. 34 in the separate computer science list.

The specialty ranks are stronger than the overall number, and they are the better guide when you choose a department:

Check each department page for its current degree list. Mechanical Engineering offers the PhD, MS and MEng, plus accelerated and online options. ECE offers the PhD, MS and MEng. The MEng is shorter and coursework based. The MS (thesis) and PhD are the research degrees that can lead to an assistantship.

Campus matters for visas. F-1 and J-1 students can only enrol at the Blacksburg and National Capital Region campuses, and cannot take executive master’s or virtual programmes. The Computer Science MEng in Blacksburg is limited to current or former Virginia Tech students, partner-school students and domestic applicants; international MEng applicants apply to the Northern Virginia campus.

Virginia Tech engineering graduate admission requirements

Mechanical Engineering and ECE list these documents:

  1. Graduate School online application with the $75 fee, not refundable.
  2. Statement of purpose: one page in Mechanical Engineering. ECE PhD applicants also write a one to two page discussion of career goals and proposed areas of study.
  3. Resume or CV.
  4. References: three for the PhD and MS, two for the MEng and accelerated programmes in Mechanical Engineering.
  5. Transcripts: unofficial or scanned copies uploaded with the application; the official copy is sent only after an offer.
  6. Supplemental material (Mechanical Engineering): for example research experience or a writing sample.
  7. Two-minute introductory video: required for Mechanical Engineering PhD applicants.
  8. English test scores: unless you qualify for the waiver.

GPA: the Graduate School minimum is 3.0, and applicants below that can sometimes enter a master’s on conditions. ECE sets a higher bar for its PhD: at least 3.5 on the last 60 undergraduate credit hours, or 3.5 on graduate work for master’s holders.

GRE policy by department

DepartmentGRE for fall 2027
Mechanical EngineeringOptional; scores must be under five years old
Electrical and Computer EngineeringOptional for all applicants
Computer ScienceNot required for any degree
Other departmentsCheck the department page

ECE notes that applicants with lower GPAs, or from universities it does not know well, may benefit from a strong score. That applies to many African universities, so a good GRE Quantitative score is worth considering even when optional. Scores go to Virginia Tech code 5859.

English requirements

TestGraduate School minimum
TOEFL iBT (taken before 21 January 2026)90 overall, with at least 20 in each section
TOEFL iBT (new scale)4.5, with at least 4.5 in listening, reading, writing and speaking
IELTS6.5 overall

The Graduate School does not list Duolingo, so plan on TOEFL or IELTS. Some departments want more: ECE recommends IELTS 7.5 for PhD applicants. Teaching assistants are expected to have a TOEFL speaking score of 5 or more on the new scale.

The waiver is based on your degree. If you hold a conferred bachelor’s from an accredited university where English is the medium of instruction, and your transcript shows both the degree and the English medium, you can be exempt after review. The Graduate School has no country list. Ask your registrar to state the language of instruction on the transcript or in an attached official letter. Applicants who meet every other requirement but not the English one can be considered for the AdvantageVT master’s pathway in some departments.

Application deadlines for fall 2027

Computer Science MS and PhDNone stated15 Dec 2026

Computer Science has not yet posted a fall 2027 date; its last published MS and PhD deadline was 15 December, so I have used 15 December 2026 (based on this year’s date; confirm on the official page when the call opens). ECE’s page lists recurring dates without a year. ECE accepts international applicants for fall up to 15 May at the latest.

Mechanical Engineering takes $25 off the fee for PhD applications submitted by 30 November 2026. Its banner and fee section disagree on whether the cut-off is 30 November or 1 December, so submit by 30 November to be safe.

Deadline

The dates that decide funding are 4 January 2027 in Mechanical Engineering and 15 January 2027 in ECE. A file finished after those dates competes for whatever money is left.

PhD funding at Virginia Tech engineering

Mechanical Engineering says it is committed to funding all its PhD students through fellowships, teaching assistantships and research assistantships, and most new PhD students get a multi-year package tied to good progress. ECE warns that admission needs a faculty member to agree to advise you, and full funding consideration needs the January date.

The Graduate School assistantship rules for 2026-27 are worth reading closely:

  • A full assistantship (GA, GRA or GTA) is about 20 hours of work a week.
  • Stipends follow a pay scale from step 1 to step 10, set in a table effective 10 August 2026 to 9 August 2027. The department places you on a step.
  • In-state tuition, the programme fee and the library fee are remitted in proportion to your appointment.
  • The out-of-state part of tuition is waived for students who earn more than $4,000 in assistantship pay in the academic year, with at least $2,000 earned in each of fall and spring.
  • Comprehensive fees and the CFE fee are not covered. You pay them yourself, by instalment if you like.
  • Assistantships of at least 50% may come with health insurance benefits; the page does not give the subsidy.

Neither the Graduate School page nor the department pages state a dollar stipend for 2026-27, so ask for the monthly figure and the step in your offer letter.

MS and MEng funding

Mechanical Engineering says research assistant funding for MS students is possible at the adviser’s discretion, but most MS students are not fully funded and should expect to pay the full cost. Computer Science mentions scholarships for MEng applicants who are US citizens or permanent residents. Plan to be self-funded as an international master’s student.

Tuition and cost of attendance

Virginia Tech’s Cranwell International Center publishes this estimate for graduate students in Blacksburg for calendar year 2026, used for I-20 funding:

Item2026 estimate
Tuition and fees$36,212
Room and board$16,990
Miscellaneous expenses$12,082
Total$65,284
Additional engineering charge (by programme)$2,000

The Board of Visitors approved 2026-27 tuition and fee increases in April 2026, so the figure for your start date may be a little higher. Health insurance is not listed separately in the estimate; check the student health insurance cost before you finalise your budget.

Costs not covered

  • Comprehensive and CFE fees for funded assistants, which the assistantship does not pay.
  • Health insurance costs beyond any assistantship benefit.
  • SEVIS and visa fees and travel to Roanoke or another nearby airport.
  • A car or ride costs, since Blacksburg is a small town in the mountains.
  • Summer living costs if your stipend does not run through summer.

STEM OPT after graduation

Engineering and computer science degrees fall under CIP families 14 and 11 on the Department of Homeland Security STEM Designated Degree Program list. After an MS, MEng or PhD you can use 12 months of OPT and then apply for the 24-month STEM OPT extension with an E-Verify employer. Confirm the CIP code on your I-20 with the Cranwell International Center.

How to contact potential PhD advisers

ECE will not admit a PhD student unless a professor agrees to advise them, and research assistant pay comes from professors’ grants. Contacting faculty before January is part of the application at Virginia Tech.

  1. Shortlist labs: read two recent papers from each and check the lab page for openings.
  2. Write a specific subject line: for example, “Fall 2027 PhD applicant, water treatment, Civil and Environmental Engineering”.
  3. Lead with your best result: what you did, the method and the outcome.
  4. Ask one question: are they taking new PhD students for fall 2027?
  5. Attach a one-page CV: follow up once after two weeks.

A short opening, for illustration only:

“Dear Professor [Name], I am a civil engineering graduate of [University], [Country], applying to the Virginia Tech Civil and Environmental Engineering PhD for fall 2027. My final-year project measured [contaminant] removal in a low-cost sand filter serving a rural community, and your recent work on [topic] uses a related method. Are you considering new PhD students for fall 2027?”

How to write the statement of purpose for Virginia Tech

Mechanical Engineering asks for one page, so every line has to count.

  • First lines: the research problem you want to work on and why.
  • Middle: one project, with your role, method and result. Add numbers where you have them.
  • Fit: name one or two Virginia Tech faculty and what you would do with them.
  • Goal: one sentence on your career plan.
  • ECE PhD applicants write a separate one to two page career goals statement, so use it for the longer argument and keep the statement of purpose tight.
  • Mechanical Engineering PhD applicants also record a two-minute video. Use it to say in your own voice what your first paragraph says on paper.

Common mistakes international applicants make

  • Skipping the English waiver evidence: the waiver needs a transcript or official letter showing English as the medium of instruction. Without it you need a test.
  • Aiming for TOEFL 80: Virginia Tech’s old-scale minimum is 90 with 20 in each section.
  • Converting your CGPA yourself: upload your transcript with its scale and let the department assess it.
  • Applying with a three-year degree: the Graduate School pages I checked do not address them, so email grads@vt.edu before you apply.
  • Missing the funding dates: the March and February deadlines are for admission, not funding.
  • Choosing a virtual or executive programme: F-1 students cannot enrol in them.
  • Skipping the ME PhD video: it is required.

Who should apply

Virginia Tech is a good choice for civil, environmental, industrial and agricultural engineering, where its specialty ranks are top 10, and for PhD applicants who want a department that commits to funding every PhD student. The medium-of-instruction waiver is useful for graduates of English-taught universities in Africa and Asia.

It is less suited to self-funded master’s students who want a big city, or to applicants who cannot reach TOEFL 90 or IELTS 6.5 and do not qualify for the waiver.
