Vanderbilt engineering ranking
The School of Engineering’s fact sheet lists it at No. 39 in the U.S. News 2026 graduate engineering rankings, released in April 2026. The fact sheet does not list specialty ranks, so check the U.S. News site for your field. With a 6 to 1 ratio of graduate students to faculty, you will be in smaller groups than at most schools around it in the list.
Departments and graduate programmes
| Department or programme | Graduate options |
|---|---|
| Biomedical Engineering | MS, PhD |
| Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering | MS, PhD; MEng in Chemical Engineering |
| Civil and Environmental Engineering | MS, PhD; MEng in Civil or Environmental Engineering |
| Electrical and Computer Engineering | MS, PhD |
| Mechanical Engineering | MS, PhD; MEng |
| Interdisciplinary Materials Science | MS, PhD |
| Division of Engineering Science and Management | Online MEng in Engineering Management |
Interdisciplinary MEng options include Cyber-Physical Systems, Construction Management, Risk, Reliability and Resilience Engineering, and Engineering in Surgery and Intervention. Computer Science is not on the School of Engineering’s programme list; Vanderbilt’s programme search shows a separate College of Connected Computing, so check there if you want a CS degree.
Vanderbilt engineering admission requirements for international students
- Online application: opens 1 August each year.
- Statement of purpose.
- Letters of recommendation: the MEng page asks for recommendations on your professional promise.
- Official transcripts: they count as official only when your university sends them directly, by post to PMB 407833, 2301 Vanderbilt Place, Nashville, TN 37240-7833, or by secure electronic delivery to cdm@vanderbilt.edu.
- English test scores: if your degree is from a country where English is not the official language.
The school says it judges applicants on merit and the complete record. The MEng asks for a B average in courses relevant to your goals and counts work experience. No minimum GPA for the MS or PhD and no WES requirement appear on the engineering admissions pages, so give your grades on your own scale and let the transcript speak.
English test minimums and waivers
| Test | Minimum |
|---|---|
| TOEFL iBT (Home Edition accepted) | 89 |
| IELTS | 7.0 |
| Duolingo English Test | 130 |
The rule turns on the country of your degree: applicants who did not graduate from an institution in a country where English is the official language must send scores. Nigeria, Ghana and Kenya have English as an official language, but Vanderbilt does not publish a country list on the pages checked, and it reviews waiver requests only after your application and documents are complete. Ask gradengineering@vanderbilt.edu early so you still have time to sit a test if the answer is no.
GRE policy
The School of Engineering does not require GRE scores for spring or fall 2027 admission. The policy is school-wide, so it covers every department above.
Vanderbilt engineering deadlines for 2027
| Entry and degree | Deadline (11:59 pm US Eastern) |
|---|---|
| Fall 2027 PhD: fee waiver request | 1 Dec 2026 |
| Fall 2027 PhD: recommended | 15 Dec 2026 |
| Fall 2027 PhD: final | 8 Jan 2027 |
| Fall 2027 MS: priority | 8 Jan 2027 |
| Fall 2027 MS: final | 15 Mar 2027 |
| MEng, spring or fall 2027 | Rolling review |
| Reply to an admission offer | 15 Apr 2027 |
Spring entry is possible too: the spring 2027 round closed on 15 October 2026, with PhD entry in ECE and Mechanical Engineering and MS entry in Biomedical, Chemical and Biomolecular, Electrical and Computer, and Mechanical Engineering. For spring 2028 entry, the deadline is 15 October 2027 (based on this year’s date; confirm on the official page when the call opens). One admissions page prints the fall PhD final deadline as “January 8, 2026”, which is a typo for the 2027 cycle; the main graduate page gives 8 January 2027. If you reply to an offer after 15 April, your financial award can be given to someone else.
PhD fee waiver closes first
PhD application fee waivers must be requested by 1 December 2026, five weeks before the final deadline. Waivers are offered to students at US institutions and at select international institutions, so ask gradengineering@vanderbilt.edu whether yours qualifies well before that date.
PhD funding at Vanderbilt engineering
Vanderbilt funds its engineering PhD students through teaching and research assistantships. From fall 2026, the package includes:
- a stipend starting at $40,000 a year;
- full tuition;
- paid health insurance;
- student activity and recreation fees;
- a relocation allowance.
Highly qualified applicants can receive extra fellowship awards of $1,000 to $10,000 a year. Teaching assistantships are short term and go first to new students, so after the first year your money usually comes from an adviser’s research grant, and continued support depends on your progress and available funds.
Be careful with university-wide awards. The Graduate School’s Provost’s Graduate Fellowship is limited to US citizens and permanent residents. The engineering pages do not say whether the $1,000 to $10,000 supplements are open to international students, so ask when you are admitted.
Master’s funding: what to expect
Vanderbilt says partial tuition scholarships may be available to qualified MS applicants. It lists no stipend or health cover for master’s students, and the Graduate School notes that master’s students receive aid less often and in smaller amounts than PhD students. Plan to pay for an MS or MEng yourself.
Vanderbilt engineering tuition and costs for 2026-27
| Cost item | 2026-27 amount |
|---|---|
| Engineering master’s tuition | $2,486 per credit hour |
| 30-credit MS or MEng tuition | $74,580 (my arithmetic) |
| Student services fee | $347 fall, $347 spring, $118 summer |
| Student health fee | $441 fall, $441 spring, $153 summer |
| Student health insurance (graduate and international) | $4,484 for the full year |
A 30-credit master’s finished in one academic year comes to about $80,600 in tuition, fall and spring fees and insurance before rent and food. Spread over two years the tuition is the same, but you pay fees, insurance and Nashville rent twice. Vanderbilt offers an interest-free five-month payment plan (VANDYPlan) each semester.
STEM OPT after a Vanderbilt engineering degree
Engineering degrees fall under CIP codes on the Department of Homeland Security STEM Designated Degree Program List. On an F-1 visa you can usually work for 12 months on OPT after graduating, then apply for the 24-month STEM OPT extension with an E-Verify employer. For the Engineering Management MEng and other interdisciplinary programmes, confirm the CIP code with Vanderbilt’s International Student and Scholar Services before you enrol. A fully online degree generally does not qualify you for an F-1 student visa.
Admission statistics
Vanderbilt does not publish engineering graduate acceptance rates or average scores on the pages checked. What it does publish is enrollment: 515 PhD, 141 MS and 55 MEng students in fall 2025, and 126 non-teaching research faculty and staff.
How to contact potential PhD advisers at Vanderbilt
Since your stipend after year one usually comes from an adviser’s grant, faculty interest matters at Vanderbilt.
- Pick two or three faculty: read their recent papers and lab pages.
- Email in November: before the 1 December fee waiver date and the 15 December recommended date.
- Be specific: one result from your own work and one link to theirs.
- Ask about funding directly: whether they expect to take a research assistant for fall 2027.
A sample opening, for illustration: “Dear Professor [Name], I am applying to the Vanderbilt [department] PhD for fall 2027. At [University] I built [project] and measured [result], and I would like to apply that experience to your lab’s work on [topic]. Will you be taking a new research assistant next fall?”
How to write the Vanderbilt statement of purpose
- Start with the research problem you want to work on.
- Give evidence from projects, internships or papers, with your part in each.
- Name two or three Vanderbilt faculty and explain the fit, and say what you would work on with each.
- Mention any interdisciplinary interest, for example engineering in surgery with the medical centre, if it is real.
- For the MEng, put work experience and career goals first, since that programme weighs them.
- End with your plan after the degree.
Common mistakes international applicants make
- Uploading a transcript and calling it official: Vanderbilt counts only transcripts sent directly by your university.
- Assuming the English waiver: requests are reviewed only once your file is complete, so confirm early.
- Missing 1 December: the PhD fee waiver closes well before the deadline.
- Converting your CGPA yourself: report it on the scale your university uses.
- Applying with a three-year degree without checking: the engineering pages do not address it, so write to the graduate office first.
- Looking for Computer Science under Engineering: check the College of Connected Computing.
Costs not covered by funding
- Rent and food in Nashville; the PhD package includes a relocation allowance but no housing support.
- Visa and SEVIS fees and flights.
- Health cover for a spouse or children.
- For MS students: all tuition beyond any partial scholarship, plus fees and insurance.
Who should apply to Vanderbilt engineering
I would apply to Vanderbilt for a PhD if you want a fully funded place with a published stipend floor of $40,000, no GRE and no MS fee to test the water. Biomedical and surgical engineering applicants can look at the Engineering in Surgery and Intervention option. A self-funded MS is harder to justify: at $2,486 a credit, it costs far more than public schools near it in the ranking, unless you win a large partial scholarship.
