UNN Cut Off Mark for Computer Science 2027/2028: Aggregate Breakdown and Preparation Tips

The UNN cut off mark for Computer Science in 2027/2028 is 160 to apply, with no official departmental figure. See the JAMB subjects, O’level rules, an aggregate breakdown, the score to aim for and preparation tips.

The UNN cut off mark for Computer Science for 2026/2027 is 160 in the UTME, the general minimum the University of Nigeria, Nsukka set for everyone who chose UNN first and wanted to register for screening. UNN has not published a separate departmental cut off for Computer Science this session or last. Any site quoting an “official” Computer Science figure for UNN is giving you an estimate.

2027/2028 update: UNN cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.

At JAMB’s 2026 policy meeting, UNN’s declared minimum was reported as 200, and Computer Science is one of the most requested courses in the Faculty of Physical Sciences. So 160 lets you apply, but the score that wins a place sits well above 200. This guide covers the official figures, the JAMB subject combination and O’level rules UNN publishes, a worked aggregate breakdown, the score I would aim for, preparation tips and the steps from JAMB profile code to acceptance.

Why two numbers? JAMB’s policy meeting list gave UNN as 200, but the university’s own screening notice invited everyone with 160 and above. The safest reading: UNN accepts screening applications from 160, UNN’s declared institutional benchmark at the 2026 JAMB policy meeting was 200, and competitive courses admit far above both. Use 160 to check that you can register, and judge your chances of a place by the competition for the course.

Has UNN released a departmental cut off mark for Computer Science?

No. As of 29 October 2026, UNN has not published departmental cut off marks for any course for 2026/2027, and I found no official departmental list for 2025/2026. A July 2026 blog headline promised “official departmental scores” for UNN, but the article had no figures and cited no UNN document. The table below shows only what can be traced to a source.

The 230 to 245 range comes from one education blog that says its numbers are estimated from trends, and it does not say whether they are UTME scores or aggregates. I include it only so you know where that figure comes from when you see it quoted elsewhere. Departmental cut offs are fixed after screening, once UNN sees how many people applied for each course and how they scored, so they move every year.

JAMB subject combination and O’level requirements for Computer Science at UNN

Use of English is compulsory for every UTME candidate. For the other three subjects and the O’level credits, UNN’s Faculty of Physical Sciences admission page and UNN’s remarks in the JAMB brochure say the same thing.

RequirementWhat UNN asks forSource
UTME subjectsUse of English, Mathematics, Physics, plus one of Biology, Chemistry, Economics or GeographyUNN Faculty of Physical Sciences; JAMB brochure (Myschool reprint)
Subject UNN rejectsAgricultural Science is not accepted as the fourth UTME subjectUNN remark in the JAMB brochure
O’levelFive credits: English Language, Mathematics and Physics, plus two from Chemistry, Biology (or Agricultural Science) and EconomicsUNN remark in the JAMB brochure
Direct EntryTwo A’level passes in science subjects including Mathematics; or NCE with at least merit in Mathematics and one other science or social science subjectUNN Faculty of Physical Sciences
Other Direct Entry routesA university Diploma in data processing (at least merit), or an HND in data processing, engineering or mathematics with an overall B, may be consideredUNN Faculty of Physical Sciences

Two details catch people out. First, the JAMB brochure’s general entry for Computer Science lists Agricultural Science as an option for the fourth UTME subject, but UNN’s own remark says it does not accept it. If you register Agric as your fourth subject, UNN can reject you even with a high score. Chemistry is the safest choice because it also keeps engineering courses open. Second, Physics is compulsory in both the UTME and O’level for this course at UNN, so a candidate with a strong Mathematics grade but no Physics credit is not eligible.

A credit means C6 or better in WAEC, NECO or NABTEB. The UNN pages I checked do not state a sitting limit for Computer Science, and the screening form had space for two O’level results. Upload both sittings if you combined them.

UNN Computer Science aggregate breakdown and screening

UNN’s 2026/2027 screening was an online registration with document uploads. The notice described no written or CBT test and did not publish how candidates are ranked.

ItemUNN 2026/2027 screening (official notice, 13 July 2026)

UNN has not published its aggregate formula in any notice I could open. The method most often reported by education blogs is 60% of your UTME score plus 40% of an O’level score, where four relevant subjects are graded A1 = 100, B2 = 90, B3 = 80, C4 = 70, C5 = 60 and C6 = 50. Treat it as a commonly used blog method, not an official UNN formula, and use it only to see roughly where you stand.

Take a Computer Science candidate with 262 in the UTME and B3 in English, A1 in Mathematics, B2 in Physics, B3 in Chemistry.

  • O’level points: 80 + 100 + 90 + 80 = 350 out of 400
  • UTME part: 262 × 0.6 = 157.2
  • O’level part: 350 × 0.4 = 140
  • Estimated aggregate: 157.2 + 140 = 297.2 out of 400

Notice how much the O’level side carries under this method. If the same candidate had C5 in Physics and C6 in Chemistry instead, the O’level total would drop from 350 to 290 and the estimate would fall by 24 points, which is the same as losing 40 marks in the UTME. Whatever weights UNN actually uses, good grades in Mathematics and Physics help a Computer Science candidate twice: they make you eligible and they lift your ranking.

Admission odds: what UTME score to aim for in UNN Computer Science

Computer Science attracts far more applicants than it has places. It draws candidates who want technology careers, many who also considered engineering, and a growing number who see it as a route to remote work. It was not among the under-subscribed courses in the reprinted part of UNN’s 2025/2026 advert (vacancy) list, which tells you the department filled its places in the main admission.

My advice, not a UNN figure: aim for 250 to 280 in the UTME, with A1 or B2 in Mathematics and Physics.

Your 2026 UTME scoreMy read for UNN Computer Science
160 to 199You can register for screening, but merit admission to Computer Science is very unlikely. Consider a less crowded course.
200 to 239Borderline. Strong O’level grades and catchment status may help, but have a backup plan.
240 to 259A fair chance with good grades in Mathematics and Physics.
260 and aboveCompetitive on merit in a normal year.

How places are shared also matters. Federal universities fill courses under a national guideline:

  • Merit: the federal guideline usually quoted for federal universities is 45% of places on merit, filled from the top scorers in each course regardless of state. UNN has not published its own split.
  • Catchment: about 35% under the same guideline. UNN’s catchment is generally understood to be the South-East states, but UNN has not published a list online, so confirm on JAMB CAPS or with the admissions office before you count on it.
  • ELDS: about 20% for educationally less developed states. This is a federal designation and UNN does not publish its own list, so I will not name states here.
  • State of origin: what counts is the state on your JAMB profile, backed by the LGA identification letter you upload during screening.

How to apply for Computer Science at UNN: step by step

Warning

UNN did not accept awaiting results for its 2026/2027 screening. Your WAEC, NECO or NABTEB result had to be out and uploaded to both JAMB CAPS and the UNN portal before screening closed. If you plan to rewrite a subject, sit it early enough for the result to be ready before the next screening window opens.

  1. Get your JAMB profile code: text NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN (for example, NIN 12345678901) to 55019 or 66019 from the phone line linked to your NIN. JAMB replies with the profile code you use to register.
  2. Register for the UTME with the right subjects: pick Computer Science at the University of Nigeria as your first choice. UNN only screens first-choice candidates, so a second-choice listing will not get you onto its portal.
  3. Upload your O’level to CAPS: do it at a JAMB-accredited CBT centre as soon as your WAEC or NECO result is out. In 2026 UNN wanted results on CAPS and on its own portal by the screening deadline.
  4. Register for UNN screening: go to unn.edu.ng, click UNN Portal, then Prospective Students and the screening form. Enter your JAMB registration number, generate and pay the Remita invoice, come back and enter the number again, fill in your personal and O’level details (centre and exam numbers), upload your documents, review, submit and print the acknowledgement slip. You cannot change your date of birth afterwards.
  5. Check CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, click Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS and Admission Status. If UNN has offered you a place, read the course name carefully before you click Accept.
  6. Finish with UNN: print your JAMB admission letter, then pay the UNN acceptance fee on the university portal and follow the clearance instructions. The fee has been reported as ₦25,000 by an education blog, but I could not find it in an official UNN notice, so confirm the figure on the portal before paying.

Our JAMB CAPS guide explains each CAPS status, including what a Transfer Approval means if UNN offers you a course you did not pick. If your score is short and you want to move to a course with more room, read our JAMB change of course guide before the CAPS window closes.

Preparation tips for UNN Computer Science candidates

If you are writing the UTME again in 2027, these are the habits I would build into your plan:

  • Treat Mathematics as your highest-value paper: it is compulsory for this course, it is where a strong candidate can pull ahead, and UNN also looks at your O’level Mathematics.
  • Practise Physics calculations under time pressure: mechanics, electricity and waves come up every year. Speed with the formulas frees time for the hard questions.
  • Pick Chemistry as your fourth subject unless you are much stronger in Economics: it keeps you eligible for engineering courses as a fallback, and you can revise with our JAMB Chemistry syllabus guide.
  • Do not waste effort on Computer Studies as a UTME subject for this course: UNN’s combination for Computer Science is built on Mathematics and Physics.
  • Sort your O’level early: if Physics or Mathematics is below C6, rewrite before the screening window opens, because UNN does not accept awaiting results.

Once your result is out, our guide on checking your JAMB result and what to do with the score helps you decide whether to stay with Computer Science or switch.

What you study in Computer Science at UNN

The Department of Computer Science is in the Faculty of Physical Sciences on the Nsukka campus. It sits on the top floor of the J.C. Ezeilo Building, which students call the Abuja Building.

  • History: the department began in 1975 as a sub-department of the Faculty of Physical Sciences, offering combined honours with Mathematics, Physics and Statistics. Single honours Computer Science started in 1981, and M.Sc. and Ph.D. programmes followed from 1991.
  • Duration: four years for UTME entrants. UNN’s remark in the JAMB brochure says Direct Entry into Computer Science is four years while combined courses are three, so ask the department which level you would join.
  • Combined honours: the department has run Computer Science with Mathematics, Physics and Statistics since its early years. Check the current list on the faculty site if a combined degree interests you.
  • Typical content: programming, data structures and algorithms, computer architecture, operating systems, databases, networks, software engineering and a final-year project, alongside university-wide mathematics and general studies courses. Check the department’s course list for the current outline.
  • Accreditation: I did not find a published NUC accreditation result for this programme, so ask the department if that matters to you.

UNN was also reported in September 2026 to have NUC approval for new programmes from 2026/2027, including Cyber Security, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Software Engineering and Information Technology. That report came through an education news site, and UNN had not published which faculty would run them or their entry requirements when I checked. If you want one of those degrees, confirm on the UNN portal before you register.

Computer Science graduates work as software developers, data analysts, network and systems administrators, cybersecurity analysts, database administrators and IT support specialists in banks, telecoms firms, tech startups and government agencies. Some go into teaching and research after a master’s degree, and many freelance or work remotely for companies abroad.

UNN cut off mark for Computer Science: frequently asked questions

Is 230 enough for Computer Science in UNN? It clears both the 160 screening minimum and the 200 benchmark, but for Computer Science it is borderline. UNN has not published a departmental cut off, and with average O’level grades I would not count on 230 for a merit place.

Can I use awaiting result for UNN Computer Science screening? No. UNN’s 2026/2027 notice said candidates awaiting results were not eligible, and O’level results had to be on JAMB CAPS and the UNN portal by 5 August 2026.

Does UNN accept Agricultural Science in JAMB for Computer Science? No. UNN’s remark in the JAMB brochure says it does not accept Agricultural Science, so take Chemistry, Biology, Economics or Geography alongside English, Mathematics and Physics.

Can I study Computer Science at UNN without Physics? No. Physics is required in both the UTME and the O’level for Computer Science at UNN. Without it, look at Statistics or Mathematics, whose combinations are more flexible.

Sources and updates

The 160 minimum, screening fees, dates, eligibility rules, upload list and portal steps come from UNN’s 2026/2027 screening notice signed by the Registrar on 13 July 2026. The 200 figure comes from Vanguard’s report of the JAMB 2026 policy meeting (11 May 2026), and the national 150 minimum and the four-week CAPS acceptance window from the News Agency of Nigeria’s report of the same meeting. The 2025/2026 figures come from Myschool’s reprint of UNN’s advert notice (20 October 2025). UTME subjects, O’level and Direct Entry rules come from the UNN Faculty of Physical Sciences admission requirements page and UNN’s remarks in the JAMB brochure entry for Computer Science as reprinted by Myschool. Department history comes from the Faculty of Physical Sciences website. The new NUC-approved programmes were reported by Myschool on 26 September 2026; I did not find a UNN notice for them. The 230 to 245 figure is a campuscybercafe blog estimate. The aggregate method is a blog method (Studentship), not UNN policy, and the ₦25,000 acceptance fee comes from an O3schools page without an official source. The safe target scores are my own advice. Checked on 29 October 2026; this page will be updated if UNN publishes departmental cut off marks.
