Chicago Booth MBA 2027 for International Students: Ranking, GMAT, Tuition, Scholarships and Deadlines
Chicago Booth is #3 in U.S. News 2026. See the new 300-character short answers, Class of 2027 GMAT and GRE averages, the 2026-27 budget ($132,449), loans without a US cosigner and the 7 January 2027 Round 2 deadline.

Chicago Booth MBA admission requirements for international students match those for US applicants: a GMAT or GRE score, four short answers of 300 characters each, one recommendation from a supervisor, a resume, transcripts and a $250 fee. You may also need a TOEFL, IELTS, PTE or Duolingo score. For international applicants Booth has two strong points. It offers loans to every student whatever their citizenship, with no US cosigner needed, and the whole MBA is STEM-eligible for OPT.

Round 1 for 2026-27 closed on 15 September 2026. The open deadline is Round 2, due 7 January 2027 at 11:59 p.m. Central Time, with decisions on 25 March 2027. Chicago Booth ranking

Booth is #3 in the U.S. News 2026 Best Business Schools ranking for full-time MBA programmes, released 7 April 2026, up from #4 the year before. Stanford is #1, Wharton #2, and Harvard and Kellogg share #4.

Booth is known for a flexible curriculum in which students choose most of their courses, which suits experienced applicants who know what they want to learn.

Chicago Booth acceptance rate and class profile

Booth does not publish an admit rate. For the Class of 2027 it received a record 5,876 applications, about 13% more than the year before, and enrolled 635 students. That is roughly 11% of applicants enrolling. Leland’s April 2026 summary estimates the admit rate at about 29%; treat it as an estimate.

Note how many students submitted the GRE: 42%, more than either version of the GMAT. Booth states it has no preference, so choose the test you score best on. With 37% international students, Booth has one of the most global classes among the top five.

Chicago Booth MBA requirements for international applicants

International applicants follow the same steps as US applicants. You need:

  • A degree equivalent to a US four-year bachelor’s. Booth also accepts three-year Bologna degrees.
  • Transcripts or scanned academic records for every degree.
  • A GMAT or GRE score. Self-report it; send official scores only after you accept an offer, unless a score will expire before your decision.
  • An English test where required.
  • Four short answers and, if useful, the optional essay.
  • One recommendation and the skills assessment completed by your recommender.
  • A resume and the $250 fee.

English language requirement and minimum scores

TestBooth minimum
TOEFL iBT (from 21 January 2026)5.0
TOEFL iBT (before 21 January 2026)104 (or 600 paper)
IELTS Academic7

Scores expire after two years. TOEFL code is 1832-02. Booth reads only one sitting and does not accept MyBest scores. If you score below the minimum you can still apply; if invited, you will need to show your English at the interview. Booth’s international page does not describe a formal waiver, so if your degree was taught in English, check with admissions before you skip the test.

Chicago Booth short answers 2026-2027 and how to answer them

Booth replaced its long essays this cycle. The application now has four required prompts of 300 characters each (about 50 words), entered in a text box.

PromptLimit
What is your immediate post-MBA career goal?300 characters
What is your long-term post-MBA career goal?300 characters
Upload an image and explain its significance to you.300 characters
Share a fun fact or something unique about yourself.300 characters
Optional: unclear information or additional details for the committee300 words
Reapplicants: how has your perspective changed since your last application?300 words

The two goal questions

With 300 characters you have room for a role, a sector and a reason. Skip any opening line about your passion. The long-term answer should follow from the short-term one, so the reader sees one career path.

For illustration: “Product manager at a payments company in the US, building tools for small merchants who sell across borders.” (108 characters)

The image question

Choose a photo you took or that genuinely belongs to your life, then use the caption to say what it reveals about you. The image does part of the work, so the caption can focus on meaning.

For illustration: “My father’s 1994 calculator, still working. He did a hospital’s payroll on it for twenty years. I learned long division on it, and I still check big numbers by hand before I trust a spreadsheet.”

Fun fact

Pick something specific and true that would start a conversation. One concrete detail beats a list of hobbies.

Optional essay

Use it for a low grade, a gap in employment, an unusual grading scale or why your recommender is not your current boss. With so little writing elsewhere, it is tempting to use this space for another story. Booth asks for explanations only.

Chicago Booth interview format

Interviews are by invitation after Booth reviews your application. They are virtual, one interview per applicant, run by a current student or another member of the Booth community, and every interviewer carries equal weight. Booth requires an interview for admission, though being interviewed does not guarantee it. Invited candidates also complete a short video simulation, answering recorded questions on Booth’s video platform.

Because the written application is now so short, the interview and video carry more of the load. Prepare to talk through your resume, your goals and why Booth, and practise answering on camera with a timer.

Chicago Booth tuition and cost of attendance 2026-2027

First-year cost (Class of 2028)Amount
Tuition$89,976
Student services fee$1,560
Administrative service fee (first year only)$3,100
Lifetime transcript fee (one time)$84
Books and course materials$549
Housing and food$26,010
Personal expenses, including health insurance$7,770
Transportation$1,800
Computer allowance (first year only)$1,600
Total$132,449

Booth will release 2027-28 tuition in spring 2027. The University health insurance rate was still “to be determined”, so the personal expenses line is an estimate.

Costs not covered

  • Application, test and score-reporting fees.
  • F-1 visa and SEVIS fees and your flight to Chicago.
  • Winter clothing: Chicago winters are cold, and this is a real cost for students from warm countries.
  • Recruiting travel, club trips and international study trips.
  • Any deposit on an apartment and furnishing it.

Chicago Booth scholarships and loans for international students

  • Merit scholarships: funded by alumni. There is no separate application; you are considered from your admission file. Booth weighs academic merit, intended concentration, interview, competitiveness, career goals and life experience. Some winners hear at admission, others shortly after.
  • Fellowships: offered to selected admitted students. Booth’s aid page does not name them.
  • Loans without a US cosigner: Booth offers financing to all students regardless of citizenship or cosigner. The loan details appear on the admitted student website.

Booth says most students fund the MBA mainly with loans. The no-cosigner loan access is a practical advantage for applicants from Nigeria, Kenya or Ghana who cannot find a US guarantor. You still need to show proof of funds for the I-20, so plan the loan timeline early. Also look at outside awards in our US scholarships deadline list.

STEM designation and OPT

Booth’s MBA is STEM-eligible for OPT. An F-1 graduate can apply for an extra 24 months of work-based training on top of the first year of OPT. You do not need to choose a particular concentration for this, which makes Booth simpler than schools that certify only some majors.

Employers that hired Booth graduates include Accenture, Amazon, Bain, BCG, Capital One, Citigroup, Deloitte, Evercore, EY-Parthenon, Goldman Sachs, Google, JPMorgan Chase, McKinsey and PwC. Booth does not split out international students in the summary I checked; 1.3% went to Asia, 0.9% to Europe and 2.1% to Latin America and the Caribbean.

What the Booth admissions committee looks for

Booth is known for analytical rigour, so a strong quantitative record helps: good maths grades, a solid test score or work that involves real analysis. With the essays cut to 300 characters, the resume, the recommendation and the interview now carry most of the story. Make the resume show results with numbers, and pick a recommender who can fill in the skills assessment with real examples.

Common mistakes international applicants make

  • Going over 300 characters or spending them on a long opening.
  • Choosing a stock photo or a holiday picture with no story behind it.
  • Using the optional essay as a second personal essay.
  • Assuming an English-medium degree means no test, without checking with Booth.
  • Missing the Central Time deadline, which falls early on 8 January in West Africa.
  • Forgetting that the video exercise needs a quiet room and a stable connection.
  • Not planning proof of funds for the visa until after admission.

Who should apply to Booth

Booth suits applicants with clear goals who want to choose their own courses, people heading into consulting or finance, and international students who need loan access without a US cosigner. Its STEM status for the whole MBA is a plus if you hope to work in the US.

It is a weaker fit if you want a lot of required structure, or if Chicago winters would really bother you.
