UNC Kenan-Flagler MBA 2027 for International Students: Ranking, GMAT, Tuition, Scholarships and Deadlines

UNC Kenan-Flagler MBA 2027 for International Students: Ranking, GMAT, Tuition, Scholarships and Deadlines
UNC Kenan-Flagler is No. 21 in U.S. News 2026 and every MBA is STEM-designated. See the Class of 2027 profile (652 GMAT Focus, 35% international), $74,192 nonresident tuition and fees, fellowships, essays and the 6 January 2027 Round 2 deadline.

The UNC Kenan-Flagler MBA is one of the stronger options in the U.S. top 25 for international applicants: it is ranked No. 21 by U.S. News (2026 edition), its Class of 2027 averaged 652 on the GMAT Focus, 35% of the class is international, and every one of its MBA programmes is STEM-designated, which opens the door to up to 36 months of OPT. Round 1 closed on 30 September 2026, so your Deadline is Round 2 on 6 January 2027. Round 3 on 3 March 2027 is the last round open to international applicants.

The cost is the main hurdle. Non-North Carolina residents pay $74,192 in tuition and mandatory fees for 2026-27, and $103,612 a year once living costs are added. In return, about half of each class receives a merit fellowship, international students included, and the school offers a loan that does not need a U.S. cosigner. This guide covers the UNC Kenan-Flagler MBA requirements, essays, interview, scholarships, salary and the mistakes to avoid.

UNC Kenan-Flagler MBA ranking

U.S. News ranked Kenan-Flagler No. 21 for full-time MBA programmes in its 2026 Best Business Schools edition, released in April 2026, tied with Indiana Kelley. Its graduates go mainly into finance, consulting and healthcare, as the employment figures below show.

UNC MBA class profile and acceptance rate

Class of 2027 metricFigure

Average work experience5 years
International / domestic35% / 65%

Women32%
Military15%
Undergraduate majorsBusiness and economics 46%, STEM 39%, arts and humanities 4%, other 9%

Kenan-Flagler does not publish an acceptance rate or a GMAT median on its class profile page. The middle-80% GMAT Focus band of 605 to 715 is the more useful figure: if you score around 605, you are inside the range, and a score above 652 puts you above average.

At 206 students, the class is much larger than Kelley’s or Emory’s, which means a bigger alumni base and more classmates recruiting for the same roles.

UNC Kenan-Flagler MBA requirements for international students

  • A bachelor’s degree equivalent to a U.S. degree, typically four years. Kenan-Flagler says applicants with a three-year bachelor’s degree may apply, with documentation of the conferral date.
  • Transcripts for all undergraduate and graduate study. Records not in English need a certified literal (word-for-word) English translation.
  • GMAT, GRE or an approved waiver. Unofficial self-reported scores are fine until admission.
  • English test scores if English is not your native language (see below).
  • Three required written items: two 250-word essays and a video essay.
  • One professional recommendation, submitted through the GMAC Common Letter of Recommendation form.
  • A resume, ideally one page and no more than two, in reverse chronological order.
  • The $150 application fee, paid by card.
  • An interview, by invitation.

English requirements

TestMinimum totalPreferred speaking score
TOEFL5 (new 1 to 6 scale)5
IELTS7.07.5
PTE Academic6865
Duolingo English Test120Not set

TOEFL moved to a 1 to 6 band scale in January 2026, which is why the minimum reads as 5. If your score is on the old 0 to 120 scale, email mba_info@unc.edu to confirm how it is treated. You are exempt if you earned a degree at a U.S. college or university, or completed your education entirely in English in an English-speaking country. Note the wording: a degree taught in English in Nigeria or India does not automatically meet that second condition, so ask admissions before you skip the test.

GMAT and GRE waivers

You request a waiver inside the application by the round’s waiver deadline. For Round 2, that is 9 December 2026. Kenan-Flagler lists these grounds, and one or more can support a request:

  • GPA of 3.2 or higher with analytical coursework from a U.S. institution.
  • An advanced degree such as a JD, MD, PhD or an MS in STEM, business or economics.
  • Five or more years of experience in a quantitative or analytical field.
  • CFA or U.S. CPA certification.
  • Strong results on the Executive Assessment, PCAT or MCAT.

Some admitted students without a score are asked to complete Business Foundations before the programme starts. The school also warns that some finance and consulting employers ask for test scores. For an international applicant whose transcript is from a system the committee knows less well, I would take the GMAT Focus or GRE anyway.

Consortium applicants have separate dates (15 October 2026 and 5 January 2027), but Consortium fellowships are generally limited to U.S. citizens and permanent residents. The enrolment deposit is $1,500 and is non-refundable.

International applicants

Round 3 (3 March 2027) is the final deadline for international applicants, but Round 2 (6 January 2027) gives you more time for the MBA Financial Certificate, the I-20 and your F-1 visa interview. If you want a GMAT waiver for Round 2, request it by 9 December 2026.

How to apply, step by step

  1. Decide on the test: Book the GMAT Focus or GRE, or prepare a waiver request before the round’s waiver deadline.
  2. Book your English test: Aim for at least IELTS 7.0 or TOEFL 5, with a strong speaking score.
  3. Prepare transcripts: Get every transcript and, where needed, a certified literal English translation.
  4. Brief your recommender: Send the GMAC Common Letter of Recommendation request early. There is a 10-business-day grace period, but late letters slow your review.
  5. Write the essays and record the video: Two 250-word essays, an optional third, and a two-minute video.
  6. Submit and pay $150 by 11:59 p.m. ET on the round deadline.
  7. Interview if invited: In person or virtual. The school has no preference.
  8. After admission: Pay the $1,500 deposit, complete the MBA Financial Certificate and work with International Student and Scholar Services on the I-20. Payments from abroad go through Flywire.

UNC Kenan-Flagler MBA essays 2026-2027

Essay 1 (required)Your goals for pursuing an MBA, or the path you are considering, and how they reflect your background or perspective250
Essay 2 (required)Which of the four core values (impact, innovation, inclusion, integrity) most resonates with your professional journey, with an example of how it shaped a decision250
Essay 3 (optional)Anything else: accomplishments, interests, work gaps, uneven academics, recommender choice or a fun fact250
Essay 4 (reapplicants only)How your application has changed since last time100
Video essayTwo questions, two minutes total, 20 seconds to prepare, two attempts2 minutes

Essay 1: MBA goals

At 250 words you have room for a goal, a reason and a link to your background. Name the role you want after the MBA, give one experience that pushed you toward it, and say what you need from the MBA to get there. The prompt allows “the path you’re considering”, so you do not need a fixed job title if your direction is clear.

For illustration: “Running supply planning for a Nairobi distributor taught me that most stock-outs start in a spreadsheet nobody trusts, and I want to fix that at scale as an operations consultant.”

Essay 2: core values

Choose one value and one story. Integrity and impact are the easiest to support with a concrete example from work. Describe the decision, what was at stake, and what you did. Avoid listing all four values.

For illustration: “When our audit client asked us to ‘look past’ a revenue timing issue in 2023, I was the most junior person on the call.”

Optional essay and video

Use the optional essay for anything that might confuse a reader, such as a three-year degree, a gap or a low grade. The video mostly tests how you speak on your feet, so keep the content simple. Practise with a timer and plan to split the two minutes evenly between the two questions.

Vetter Dean’s Fellows essays

If you want to be considered for the Vetter Dean’s Fellows programme, tick the box in the application and write three extra essays of up to 150 words each: how the programme will help your growth and what you bring, a time you faced an ambiguous or high-stakes professional challenge, and an example of going beyond your role to support or mentor others.

The UNC Kenan-Flagler interview

Interviews are by invitation after you submit a complete application. You can do them in person or virtually, and Kenan-Flagler says it has no preference, so applicants abroad lose nothing by interviewing online. Expect questions on your goals, your resume and your fit with the four core values.

What the admissions committee looks for

The school’s fellowship criteria give a clear picture of what it values in the whole application: academic and career achievement, diverse experiences, and leadership and interpersonal skills. The core values essay tells you the rest. Show that you can work with a large, mixed class, that you have led something, and that your goals make sense for your background.

UNC Kenan-Flagler MBA tuition and cost 2026-2027

Cost (2026-27)NC residentsNon-NC residents (international)
Tuition and mandatory fees$55,470$74,192
Total with living expenses$84,890$103,612

The school says tuition is expected to rise by 3% to 10% each year and that the figures are estimates pending state budget approval. Over two years, an international student without a fellowship should budget at least $207,000 before increases.

Costs not covered

  • GMAT or GRE, English test and score report fees.
  • The $150 application fee and the $1,500 deposit, which is non-refundable.
  • SEVIS and visa fees, flights and arrival costs.
  • Extra funds for a spouse or children on the MBA Financial Certificate.
  • Travel for internship and job recruiting.

UNC Kenan-Flagler scholarships for international students

All Kenan-Flagler fellowships are merit-based, and the school states that international students receive them. Key points:

  • Admitted applicants are considered automatically. You hear about any fellowship with your admission decision.
  • Nearly 50% of students receive a fellowship, and some cover full tuition and fees.
  • The Vetter Dean’s Fellows programme has its own optional essays (above).
  • Private scholarships can reduce the cost further, though the school does not name them.

On loans, Kenan-Flagler says non-U.S. citizen students have options, including one that does not require a U.S. cosigner. It does not name the lender on its international page, so ask admissions which lender it is before you commit. For other U.S. funding ideas, see our guide to American scholarships for international students.

STEM designation and OPT

Kenan-Flagler’s MBA programmes are STEM-designated. F-1 graduates can work in the U.S. on OPT for 12 months and then apply for a 24-month STEM extension, for up to three years in total. That gives employers more time to sponsor an H-1B, which matters if you want to stay in the U.S.

UNC Kenan-Flagler MBA salary and employment

For the Class of 2025, the school reports:

  • 88% of all students had accepted offers three months after graduation, and 90% by six months.
  • Average base salary of $139,637 (based on 153 reported salaries). The school gives no overall median.
  • Average signing bonus of $32,558 among those who received one.
  • 99.6% completed a summer internship in 2024.
  • More than 280 employers hired students.
Industry (Class of 2025)Share of studentsMedian base
Financial services25%$175,000
Consulting18%$175,000
Healthcare14%$132,000
Technology13%$142,000

By function, finance led with 40% (investment banking alone was 15%), followed by consulting at 17%. The one-page report shows six-month figures of 91% and 81% split by U.S. work authorisation, though the labels are hard to match, and 4% of students took jobs outside the U.S. Ask admissions for the international placement figure directly.

Common mistakes international applicants make

  • Missing the waiver deadline. It falls about four weeks before each application deadline.
  • Applying in Round 4. It is closed to international applicants.
  • Assuming an English-medium degree from outside the U.S. exempts you from TOEFL or IELTS.
  • Sending an academic recommender. The school says academic recommendations are not recommended.
  • Writing about all four core values in Essay 2 instead of telling one story well.
  • Over-preparing the video so it sounds memorised.

Who should apply to UNC Kenan-Flagler, and who shouldn’t

Apply if you want STEM OPT across the whole MBA, a large class with a strong finance and consulting track record, and you have five or so years of experience with a GMAT Focus around 605 or higher. The interview format is friendly to applicants abroad.

Think again if you cannot fund at least part of $103,612 a year without a fellowship, or if you have fewer than two years of full-time experience and no strong internship record.
