Stanford engineering graduate admission for international students comes down to a few firm rules: a $125 application fee, a 1 December 2026 deadline in the largest departments for autumn 2027 entry, three recommendation letters, and an English test score unless you qualify for a waiver. The GRE is not required in Electrical Engineering, is not accepted at all in Mechanical Engineering this cycle, and is still required in Management Science and Engineering.
Stanford’s School of Engineering is ranked No. 2 (not tied) in the U.S. News 2026 Best Graduate Schools engineering list released in April 2026. PhD students in departments such as EE receive full financial support for the length of the programme if they keep making progress. MS students, by contrast, are mostly self-funded. The rest of this guide goes through each requirement with figures from Stanford’s own pages.
Stanford engineering at a glance
- School: Stanford University School of Engineering.
- Ranking: No. 2 for graduate engineering, U.S. News 2026 Best Graduate Schools.
- Degrees: MS and PhD in each department; Engineer degrees in some.
- Application fee: $125, non-refundable.
- Main deadline: 1 December 2026, 11:59 p.m. Pacific, for autumn 2027 (EE MS and PhD, ME MS and PhD).
- GRE: department by department; see the table below.
- English: TOEFL iBT or IELTS Academic; minimum TOEFL 90 or IELTS 7 for consideration, higher in some programmes.
- Credential evaluation: no WES report needed when you apply.
Departments and flagship programmes
The School of Engineering has nine departments, each admitting its own MS and PhD students:
- Aeronautics and Astronautics
- Bioengineering
- Chemical Engineering
- Civil and Environmental Engineering
- Computer Science
- Electrical Engineering
- Management Science and Engineering (MS&E)
- Materials Science and Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering
Electrical Engineering’s MS needs 45 units with no thesis and usually takes 1.5 to 2 years full time, according to the department. Stanford also runs a coterminal master’s route, but that is for current Stanford undergraduates, so international applicants from outside Stanford apply as regular MS or PhD candidates.
Stanford engineering GRE requirement by department
| Department | GRE policy for autumn 2027 | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Electrical Engineering | Not required | EE required materials page |
| Mechanical Engineering | Not accepted for applications received through January 2027; do not mention scores | ME PhD and MS admissions pages |
| Management Science and Engineering | Required for all applicants; hardship exemption can be requested | MS&E admission page |
| Other departments | Check the department page | Varies |
Mechanical Engineering asks applicants not to submit or even reference scores, so putting your 168 quant on your CV for an ME application is a mistake. For MS&E, the test must be taken by the deadline, though scores can arrive later. Stanford’s ETS institution code is 4704.
English language requirements
Stanford accepts the TOEFL iBT and IELTS Academic. Electrical Engineering states the university minimum for consideration as TOEFL 90 or IELTS 7, and notes that individual programmes may ask for more. MS&E expects TOEFL 100 or IELTS 7.5. Duolingo is not mentioned on the pages I checked, so do not rely on it.
| Rule | Detail |
|---|---|
| Minimum for consideration | TOEFL 90 or IELTS 7 (higher in some programmes) |
| MS&E expected minimum | TOEFL 100 or IELTS 7.5 |
| Score validity | Two years; for autumn 2027 entry, tests from 1 September 2021 onward are listed as valid by EE |
| Mechanical Engineering TOEFL rule | Taken within 18 months of the application deadline |
| Exemption from the English Placement Test after admission | TOEFL 109 or IELTS 8 |
You do not need a test if English is your first language, if you hold a U.S. or equivalent degree from a university where all teaching was in English, or if you have two or more consecutive years of full-time study or work in English within the last ten years. If you studied at an English-medium university in Nigeria, Ghana or Kenya, read the wording on Stanford’s eligibility page carefully and keep proof ready.
Application fee and waivers
The fee is $125 per application. Both the School of Engineering and some departments offer fee waivers, but EE says preference goes to low-income and first-generation applicants who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents. EE MS applicants can still request one, and Stanford asks that waiver requests go in at least ten business days before the deadline. Treat a waiver as unlikely and budget for the fee.
Stanford engineering application deadlines
| Programme | Deadline | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Electrical Engineering MS | 1 December 2026, 11:59 p.m. PST | Autumn 2027 entry |
| Electrical Engineering PhD | 1 December 2026, 11:59 p.m. PST | Autumn 2027 entry |
| Mechanical Engineering MS and PhD | 1 December 2026 | Autumn 2027 entry; open to all applicants |
| Mechanical Engineering spring 2027 | 15 January 2027 | Honors Cooperative Program applicants only; contact the department first |
| Knight-Hennessy Scholars | 6 October 2027 | For 2028 entry; separate application from the department |
The Knight-Hennessy date above is based on this year’s date; confirm on the official page when the call opens. The 2026 round, for autumn 2027 entry, closed on 6 October 2026. Recommendation letters have the same deadline as the application, so ask your referees in October.
Documents and transcripts
- Online application: through Stanford Graduate Admissions, which opened in September 2026.
- Statement of purpose: no more than two pages, single spaced (EE and ME).
- Three letters of recommendation: EE asks for exactly three, preferably academic, and discourages more than one professional referee. ME requires at least one academic letter and prefers two. Letters through Interfolio are not accepted.
- Unofficial transcripts: from every university you attended. Do not post official ones before a decision.
- Translations: original-language records plus literal, complete English translations from the institution or a professional translator.
- English test score: unless exempt.
- Resume or CV.
Stanford’s graduate admissions FAQ says a WES evaluation is not required when you apply. If you are admitted, you may be asked for one to verify your degree, so it is worth knowing the cost in advance.
PhD funding at Stanford engineering
Electrical Engineering’s PhD financial assistance page is the clearest statement of how engineering PhD funding works at Stanford:
- Year one: a department fellowship with no work requirement, in most cases.
- Year two onward: a research assistantship from your dissertation adviser, about 20 hours a week of research.
- What the package covers: tuition for full-time enrolment, a salary or stipend for living costs, and a 50% subsidy on the Cardinal Care health insurance premium.
- Conditions: satisfactory progress, a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0, enrolment in 8 to 10 units each quarter, and an adviser who can fund you.
Stanford’s university-wide minimum RA salary table for 2026-27 is published as a PDF on the Graduate Financial Services site. Individual schools can pay more. The department pages I checked do not print the dollar amount, so ask the department for the current figure if you are comparing offers.
Knight-Hennessy Scholars
The best-known fellowship open to international applicants is Knight-Hennessy Scholars. It funds up to 100 graduate students a year, with funding for up to three years of graduate study, and covers the EE MS and PhD among other programmes. You apply to Knight-Hennessy and to your department separately. External awards that replace the department fellowship, such as a government scholarship from your home country, should be discussed with the department first.
MS funding reality
Mechanical Engineering puts it plainly: admission to the MS does not usually include financial support, and research or teaching assistantships are rarely given to incoming MS students. EE points MS applicants to a separate financial assistance page. If you apply for an MS at Stanford, plan to pay for it yourself or through a sponsor.
Tuition and costs, 2026-27
Stanford’s 2026-27 graduate tuition rates list a separate Graduate School of Engineering rate:
| Enrolment level | Tuition per quarter |
|---|---|
| 11 to 18 units (full time) | $23,239 |
| 8 to 10 units | $15,100 |
| Terminal Graduate Registration (0 to 3 units) | $4,254 |
Three full-time quarters at the 11 to 18 unit rate come to $69,717 in tuition alone (our calculation). Housing, food, health insurance and personal costs in the Bay Area come on top of that. Stanford publishes a graduate student budget on its financial aid site; check the current figure before you prepare your financial documents for the I-20.
GRE warning
Mechanical Engineering will not consider GRE scores for applications received through January 2027 and asks you not to mention them. Check each department’s rule before you send a score.
How to contact potential PhD advisers
For a Stanford PhD, your second-year funding comes from your adviser, so fit with a professor matters a great deal. Read their lab page and two recent papers. Write a short email that shows you understand the work, and attach your CV.
For illustration: “Dear Professor X, I am completing a BSc in Electrical Engineering at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. Your group’s recent work on low-power sensor networks connects closely with my final-year project on solar-powered water level monitoring. I am applying to the EE PhD for autumn 2027 and would like to know whether you expect to take new students.” Keep the rest to one paragraph on your strongest result.
Do not ask a professor to assess your chances or review your file. Departments make the admission decision, and many faculty simply do not answer those requests.
How to write the statement of purpose for Stanford
- Open with direction: the area you want to work in and the question that interests you.
- Prove readiness: describe one or two research or design projects, what you did, and what you found.
- Name faculty: two or three Stanford professors whose work fits yours. ME says the statement should identify personal and professional goals.
- Close with goals: industry, academia or a return home to start something specific.
- Keep to two pages single spaced: that is the stated limit.
In my view, a short account of a project you started yourself, even a small one, tells them more than a list of courses.
Common mistakes international applicants make
- Mentioning GRE scores in an ME application: ME explicitly asks you not to.
- Sending more than three letters to EE: EE wants a minimum and maximum of three.
- Mailing official transcripts early: Stanford asks you not to post them before a decision.
- Converting your CGPA: report the grade as printed (for example 4.61/5.00 or First Class) and let the transcript speak. EE says there is no minimum GPA, but successful applicants usually rank near the top of their class.
- Assuming degree equivalency: Stanford requires a U.S. bachelor’s or international equivalent. If your degree is three years, use the WES equivalency tool Stanford recommends before you pay the fee.
- Old English scores: scores are valid for two years, and ME wants TOEFL within 18 months of the deadline.
Costs not covered by funding
- The $125 application fee and English test fees.
- SEVIS I-901 and U.S. visa fees.
- The 50% share of Cardinal Care health insurance not covered by the EE subsidy.
- Bay Area rent deposits and transport. Rent near Stanford is high, so price housing before you accept.
- A possible WES evaluation after admission.
STEM OPT after graduation
Engineering degrees fall under CIP codes on the Department of Homeland Security STEM Designated Degree Program List, so Stanford engineering graduates on F-1 status are normally eligible for 12 months of OPT plus the 24-month STEM extension. Confirm the CIP code on your I-20 with Stanford’s Bechtel International Center.
Who should apply
- Apply for the PhD if you have real research experience and can name faculty whose labs fit your work.
- Apply for the MS if you have a sponsor or the savings to cover about $70,000 in tuition plus Bay Area living costs.
- Apply to Knight-Hennessy as well if you have a leadership record outside the classroom; its deadline comes two months before the department deadline.
- Look elsewhere if you need a funded master’s. Stanford rarely funds incoming MS students.

Sources and updates
Checked on 29 October 2026 against Stanford’s own pages: Electrical Engineering’s required materials, PhD admissions and PhD financial assistance pages and its MS overview and FAQ; Mechanical Engineering’s PhD and MS admissions pages; the MS&E admission page; Stanford Graduate Admissions’ FAQ and eligibility pages; and Student Services’ 2026-27 tuition rates. The ranking comes from U.S. News 2026 Best Graduate Schools as reported by VnExpress International and Patch in April 2026. Stanford does not publish an engineering-wide acceptance rate, and EE does not release average GPAs, so neither is given here. We will update this guide when 2027-28 figures appear.
