Georgia Tech engineering graduate admission for international students is run by each school within the College of Engineering, with the Graduate Education office handling transcripts and English rules. For fall 2027, the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) closes its MS and PhD applications on 16 December, does not require the GRE, and does not accept Duolingo. International applicants pay an application fee of $105 according to a Georgia Tech departmental page, and the institute-wide IELTS minimum is 7.0.
Georgia Tech’s College of Engineering is ranked No. 4, tied with Purdue, in the U.S. News 2026 Best Graduate Schools engineering list, and second among public universities. It is also one of the cheapest top-five options for a self-funded master’s: out-of-state tuition and fees for fall 2026 are $16,831 a semester at the standard rate. Most admitted PhD students in ECE receive an assistantship that waives tuition and pays a stipend.

Schools and specialty rankings
Georgia Tech’s engineering is organised into schools, several of which rank in the top ten for their field. The College of Engineering’s April 2026 rankings release lists these U.S. News 2026 specialty positions:
| School or field | U.S. News 2026 specialty rank | Main graduate degrees |
|---|---|---|
| Biomedical Engineering (with Emory) | 1 (tied with Johns Hopkins) | MS, joint PhD |
| Industrial and Systems Engineering | 1 | MS, PhD |
| Aerospace Engineering | 2 | MS, PhD |
| Civil Engineering | 3 | MS, PhD |
| Mechanical Engineering | 3 | MSME, PhD ME, PhD Nuclear Engineering |
| Environmental Engineering | 4 | MS, PhD |

| Computer Engineering | 5 | MSECE, PhD ECE |
| Electrical Engineering | 7 | MSECE, PhD ECE |
| Materials Engineering | 7 | MS, PhD |
| Nuclear Engineering | 9 | MS, PhD |
ECE alone offers the MSECE (thesis or non-thesis), the PhD in ECE, interdisciplinary MS degrees in Cybersecurity, Bioengineering and Robotics, and PhDs in Robotics, Machine Learning and Bioengineering. The Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering also runs a joint PhD with Seoul National University.
Georgia Tech GRE requirement for engineering
ECE says on its programme FAQ that it does not require GRE scores. If you send them, they are considered, but they are not a main factor in decisions. Other engineering schools set their own policies, and the Graduate Education office notes only that programmes may ask for tests such as the GRE. Check the admissions page of the school you are applying to before you book a test.
For ECE, I would skip the GRE unless your undergraduate grades are weak and you can post a very high quantitative score.
English language requirements
Georgia Tech requires every applicant to show English proficiency, whatever their nationality. The institute catalogue and the ECE admissions page give these minimums:
| Test | Overall minimum | Section minimums |
|---|---|---|
| TOEFL iBT (taken before January 2026) | 90 | 19 in each section (ECE) |
| TOEFL iBT (new scale, from January 2026) | 4.5 | Speaking 3.5; Listening, Reading and Writing 4 |
| IELTS Academic | 7.0 | Listening, Reading and Speaking 6.5; Writing 5.5 |
| Duolingo | Not accepted by ECE |
You can be exempt if your degree comes from an institution in an approved country, or from an institution where English was the medium of instruction, in which case Georgia Tech may ask for a medium of instruction letter. Either way, official degree documents are due at least 30 days before your first term. The approved country list is on the Graduate Education website, so check it rather than assuming.
Application fee and waivers
Georgia Tech’s School of Chemistry admissions page gives the institute application fee as $95 for domestic and $105 for international applicants, non-refundable. Some departments let you request a departmental waiver inside the application if the fee is a financial hardship, and the request is reviewed case by case. ECE’s pages do not state a fee or waiver policy, so confirm the amount when you open the application.
Georgia Tech engineering application deadlines
| Programme | Deadline | Note |
|---|---|---|
| ECE PhD (all ECE PhD programmes) | 16 December 2026 | Fall 2027 entry; deadlines are firm |
| MSECE and other ECE MS programmes | 16 December 2026 | Except MS Robotics |
| MS Robotics | 1 February 2027 | |
| Other engineering schools | Check each school’s page | Set by each programme |
ECE lists these dates by day and month, without a year, at 11:59 p.m. Eastern. The years above assume the current cycle for fall 2027 entry; confirm on the ECE admissions page before you submit. ECE’s FAQ says deadlines are firm.
Documents and transcripts
- Online application: through Georgia Tech’s graduate application portal.
- Statement of purpose: required by programmes; follow each school’s instructions on length.
- Letters of recommendation: submitted through the portal by your referees.
- Transcripts: scanned copies go to the Office of Graduate Education, which says processing takes at least ten working days.
- Degree equivalency: a non-U.S. degree must be academically equivalent to a U.S. bachelor’s; Georgia Tech publishes country-specific requirements.
- English test score: unless exempt.
ECE asks applicants not to resend documents that show as incomplete. Contact Graduate Education instead if something has not been acknowledged.
PhD funding at Georgia Tech engineering
ECE states that most applicants admitted to the Atlanta PhD programme receive a Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) or Graduate Research Assistant (GRA) offer, noted in the acceptance letter. Fellowships are generally offered only to PhD applicants. If no offer comes, you need another funding plan.
According to Georgia Tech’s paying for grad school page, assistantships provide:
- A tuition waiver: you pay $25 in tuition per semester, plus the difference if your programme charges a higher rate than the standard one.
- A stipend: minimum stipend levels apply to all assistantships; the figures are in Georgia Tech’s Policy Library.
- Health insurance: Georgia Tech pays 75% of the Student Health Insurance Plan premium and you pay 25%.
- Workload: 13 to 20 hours a week on average, with full-time enrolment of at least 12 credit hours.
The pages I checked do not print a dollar amount for the stipend. Ask the school for its current GRA rate when you compare offers, as it differs between schools.
MS funding reality
MS funding is limited and not guaranteed. ECE says MS students should have another plan to pay for the degree, and can apply for GTA positions only after completing at least one semester. A GTA after the first semester would waive most tuition, which makes Georgia Tech one of the few top schools where an MS can become partly funded, though you must budget for at least the first term.
Tuition and cost of attendance
Georgia Tech’s Bursar publishes fall 2026 tuition and fees per semester for full-time (12 or more credit hours) graduate students:
| Rate | Out-of-state tuition | Mandatory fees | Total per semester |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard graduate rate (MS and PhD) | $16,073 | $758 | $16,831 |
| MS in Electrical and Computer Engineering | $18,830 | $758 | $19,588 |
Two semesters at the standard rate come to about $33,700, and about $39,200 for the MSECE (our calculations). Georgia Tech’s Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid puts 2026-27 living costs for out-of-state graduate students at $22,752 a year on campus or $25,396 off campus, covering housing, food, books, transport and personal costs.
Deadline
ECE’s MS and PhD deadline is 16 December at 11:59 p.m. Eastern, and the department says deadlines are firm. Transcript processing takes at least ten working days, so upload documents by late November.
How to contact potential PhD advisers
ECE encourages applicants who want a GRA to contact faculty working in their area directly. It also says that asking faculty to evaluate your application by email is strongly discouraged. So write to show fit and ask about openings, and do not ask for a profile review.
For illustration: “Dear Professor X, I graduated in electrical engineering from the University of Lagos and have spent the last year working on grid stability for a distribution company. Your lab’s work on inverter-based resources is close to the problems I see in my job. I am applying to the ECE PhD for fall 2027 and would like to ask whether you expect GRA openings.” Add one short paragraph on your best project and attach your CV.
How to write the statement of purpose for Georgia Tech
- Lead with your area: name the technical area (power systems, robotics, biomaterials) and the problem you want to work on.
- Give evidence: projects, research, or industry work with concrete outcomes.
- Connect to Georgia Tech: mention faculty, labs and research centres. ECE alone lists 11 specialisation areas, so choose one.
- For MS applicants: say whether you want the thesis or non-thesis route and why.
- End with a goal: where you want to be five years after the degree.
I would give space to anything you have built, tested or deployed, since ECE and ME both emphasise applied research.
Common mistakes international applicants make
- Sending Duolingo to ECE: it is not accepted.
- Missing the IELTS Writing minimum: the overall is 7.0, but each section has its own floor.
- Converting CGPA: give your grades on your university’s scale. A self-made 4.0 conversion can look inconsistent with the transcript.
- Three-year degrees: Georgia Tech requires academic equivalence to a U.S. bachelor’s and publishes country-specific rules. Check them before you pay.
- Late transcripts: with ten working days of processing, a transcript uploaded on 14 December may not be logged in time.
- Expecting MS funding in year one: ECE MS students can only apply for GTA roles after one semester.
Costs not covered by funding
- The application fee and English test fees.
- SEVIS I-901 and U.S. visa fees.
- Your 25% share of student health insurance on an assistantship.
- The $758 per semester in mandatory fees, which the tuition waiver does not remove.
- Atlanta rent and transport if you live off campus.
STEM OPT after graduation
Engineering degrees fall under CIP codes on the Department of Homeland Security STEM Designated Degree Program List, so Georgia Tech engineering graduates on F-1 status are normally eligible for 12 months of OPT plus the 24-month STEM extension. Check the CIP code on your I-20 with Georgia Tech’s Office of International Education.
Who should apply
- Apply for an MS if you want a top-five engineering degree at a public-university price and can cover roughly $56,000 to $65,000 for the first year including living costs.
- Apply for the PhD if you have research experience and want a GRA or GTA in a field where Georgia Tech ranks highly, such as industrial, biomedical or aerospace engineering.
- Look elsewhere if your only English test is Duolingo and you are applying to ECE.
