If you are an international applicant looking at the Kelley MBA for 2027 entry, the short version is this: Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business is ranked No. 21 for full-time MBA programs by U.S. News (2026 edition), its newest class averaged 618 on the current GMAT, about two in five students come from outside the United States, and nonresident tuition for 2026-27 is $55,695 a year. Round 1 has closed, so your realistic Deadline is Round 2 on 5 January 2027, which Kelley itself names as the last round international candidates should use.
Kelley is a good fit if you want a two-year MBA with strong placement into consulting, finance, technology and consumer goods, a lower total cost than many top-20 schools, and automatic merit scholarships with no separate form. Below I go through the Kelley MBA requirements, tuition, scholarships, essays, salary data and the mistakes I see international applicants make, using Kelley’s own pages as the source.

Kelley MBA ranking
U.S. News placed Kelley at No. 21 in its 2026 Best Business Schools list for full-time MBA programs, released in April 2026. It shares that spot with UNC Kenan-Flagler. The rank is a reasonable guide to reputation with U.S. recruiters, though for an international student the more useful numbers are cost, scholarship odds and how many graduates land jobs in the U.S., which I cover further down.
Kelley MBA class profile and acceptance rate
Kelley’s class profile page shows the Class of 2028 (entering 2026) as 57 students. That is a small cohort. The same admissions section still carries an older snapshot labelled “Kelley 2026” with 103 students, 46% international and a 683 GMAT average, so do not be surprised if third-party sites quote those figures. The newer numbers are below.
| Class of 2028 metric | Figure |
|---|---|
| Class size | 57 |
| International students | 39% |
| Countries represented | 14 |
| Women | 35% |
| Average age | 30 (range 24 to 44) |
| Average full-time work experience | 6 years |
| Average GPA | 3.38 |
| Average GMAT | 618 (current GMAT edition) |
| Average GRE | 161 Quant, 160 Verbal |
Kelley does not publish an acceptance rate on its admissions or class profile pages, and it does not publish a GMAT median or range. For the Class of 2027, Poets&Quants reported a 607 GMAT average, 42% international students from 23 countries, and a 3.48 GPA.
What this means for you: a GMAT in the low 600s on the current edition is in range, and six years of work experience is typical. Kelley also expects every student to have full-time work experience.
Kelley MBA requirements for international students
These are the documents and conditions Kelley lists for the Full-Time +Flex MBA.
- A bachelor’s degree from a U.S. institution or a recognised equivalent. Kelley checks this against a country equivalency list, so look up your country before you pay the fee.
- Transcripts from every institution you attended (unofficial during review, official before enrolment).
- GMAT or GRE scores, unless you are granted a waiver.
- One letter of recommendation, ideally from a current or recent supervisor.
- A professional resume showing responsibilities, achievements and leadership. Most applicants have at least two years of work experience.
- Personal essays (prompts below).
- An admissions interview, which is part of Phase 2.
- English test scores if English is not your native language.
- The Indiana University Graduate School Compliance Form and the $75 application fee.
- Comfort with algebra, spreadsheets and basic statistics. You do not need a business degree.
English requirements
| Test | Kelley minimum |
|---|---|
| TOEFL iBT | 100 on the old 0 to 120 scale, or 5 on the new 1 to 6 scale |
| IELTS | 7.0 overall band |
| Duolingo English Test | 130 |
Scores must be under two years old. Send TOEFL to institution code 1324. Kelley waives the test automatically if your undergraduate or postgraduate degree was taught in English; you state this in the application or the optional essay. If your university in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya or elsewhere taught in English, keep a letter from the registrar confirming the medium of instruction in case you are asked.
GMAT, GRE and test waivers
Kelley usually wants a GMAT or GRE score and looks at your best attempt, with attention to balance between verbal and quantitative sections. It grants a limited number of waivers to strong candidates based on academic rigour, analytical work experience and career growth. To ask for one, you fill in the online information request form and email iumba@iu.edu with your resume, transcripts and a statement of 300 words or less explaining your case. Kelley says it replies within about a week.
For international applicants I would still sit the test. A good quant score is the fastest way to show that a degree from a system the committee knows less well has prepared you, and Kelley’s merit fellowships consider test scores.
Kelley MBA deadlines 2026-2027
Kelley uses a two-phase process. Phase 1 is a free, short form with your resume. If invited, you complete Phase 2 (essays, scores, recommendation and interview) by the round deadline. Kelley’s process page lists month and day without years; the dates below are for the cycle that enrols in August 2027.
| Round | Phase 1 deadline | Phase 2 deadline | Decision by | Deposit due |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Round 1 (closed) | 1 October 2026 | 15 October 2026 | 22 December 2026 | 1 February 2027 |
| Round 2 | 15 December 2026 | 5 January 2027 | 15 March 2027 | 15 April 2027 |
| Round 3 | 15 February 2027 | 1 March 2027 | 15 April 2027 | 30 April 2027 |
| Round 4 | 1 April 2027 | 15 April 2027 | 15 May 2027 | 30 May 2027 |
Kelley’s main admissions page gives slightly different notification dates for some rounds (for example 20 December for Round 1 and 30 April for Round 3). The submission deadlines match on both pages.
International applicants
Kelley asks international candidates to apply no later than Round 2. That means submitting Phase 1 by 15 December 2026 and Phase 2 by 5 January 2027, which leaves time for the I-20 and the F-1 visa interview.
How to apply to the Kelley MBA, step by step
- Phase 1: Fill in the Kelley Graduate Application Form and upload your resume. It is free and takes a few minutes.
- Wait for the Phase 2 invitation: Kelley opens the Kelley Application Portal for invited applicants and lists your remaining items.
- Upload scores: Add GMAT or GRE and your English test results, or the waiver confirmation.
- Essays and recommendation: Submit the essays and send your recommender the request early, since late letters hold up review.
- Interview: Complete the admissions interview. The committee only reviews files after the interview is done.
- Pay the $75 fee and submit transcripts and the Graduate School Compliance Form.
- After admission: Pay the deposit, then complete the International Student Financial Documentation and Visa Application so the Office of International Services can issue your I-20.
Kelley MBA essays 2026-2027 and how to answer them
Clear Admit lists the 2026-27 Kelley prompts as follows. Kelley publishes the prompts in a PDF linked from its process page, so check the wording there before you write.
| Essay | Prompt (summary) | Word limit |
|---|---|---|
| Essay 1 (required) | Your immediate post-MBA professional goals, how your experience plus a Kelley MBA gets you there, and what alternative paths you would consider | 500 |
| Essay 2 (required) | Choose one: “My greatest memory is…”, “I’m most afraid of…”, “My greatest challenge has been…” or “I’m most proud of…” | 300 |
| Essay 3 (required) | A brief fact classmates would find interesting, surprising or noteworthy | 25 |
| Optional essay | Anything else the committee should know | 300 |
Essay 1: immediate post-MBA goals
Kelley stresses the word immediate. Name a function, an industry and two or three target employers for the first job after graduation, and link them to a specific gap in your skills that the MBA fills. Then give a credible plan B. If you want U.S. consulting but need visa sponsorship, a plan B in corporate strategy or a return to your home market with a multinational is realistic and shows you understand the market.
For illustration: “In my four years at a Lagos fintech, I built the credit model that approved our first 50,000 small-business loans, and I want my next role to be in product strategy at a U.S. payments company.”
Essay 2: one of four short prompts
Pick the prompt where your story is strongest, even if another sounds more impressive. “My greatest challenge” works well if the challenge shows judgement under pressure; “I’m most afraid of” works if you can be honest without sounding staged. Spend most of the 300 words on what you did and what changed in you.
For illustration: “I’m most afraid of being the person in the room who saw the problem first and said nothing, because in 2021 I was that person.”
Essay 3: the 25-word fact
Keep it concrete and checkable. A sport, a language, an unusual job or a record of some kind works. Avoid a second career story here.
Optional essay
Use it for a low GPA, a gap in employment, a three-year degree question or to confirm that your degree was taught in English for the waiver. Keep it factual.
The Kelley MBA interview
The interview is required for everyone invited to Phase 2, and Kelley reviews your file only after it is done. Kelley’s pages do not describe the interviewer, the length or whether it is virtual. Ask about a virtual option when you receive the invitation if you are applying from abroad. Prepare to walk through your resume, explain your immediate goals in two minutes, and give examples of teamwork and leadership with specific results.
What the Kelley admissions committee looks for
From Kelley’s own requirement list, the committee is weighing these points:
- Quantitative readiness: algebra, spreadsheets and statistics, shown through your test score, transcript or work.
- A clear and realistic first job after the MBA.
- Career progression in your work history, with leadership even in a junior role.
- Communication skills and a background that adds something to a small class.
- Community service and involvement outside work.
Kelley MBA tuition and cost of attendance 2026-2027
Kelley publishes one annual budget. International students pay the nonresident rate.
| Expense (2026-27) | Nonresident / international |
|---|---|
| Tuition | $55,695 |
| Mandatory fees | $2,423 |
| Housing and food | $17,025 |
| Books and supplies | $1,950 |
| Transportation | $2,958 |
| Personal expenses | $4,078 |
| Total for one year | $84,129 |
For the I-20 you must show funds for 12 months. Add $5,331 for a spouse, $5,331 for the first child and $3,541 for each additional child. Over two years, before any scholarship, you are looking at roughly $168,000 for a single student if costs stay flat, and Kelley says they are reviewed every year.
Costs not covered by the budget
- Application costs: the $75 fee, GMAT or GRE and English test fees, and score reports.
- Visa costs: the SEVIS fee and the visa application fee.
- Flights to the U.S. and home, plus travel for your summer internship if it is in another city.
- Winter clothing for Indiana, which is easy to underestimate if you come from a warm climate.
- Your spouse cannot work on an F-2 visa, so a family budget depends on your own funds.
Kelley MBA scholarships for international students
Kelley’s merit awards do not list a citizenship restriction, which is good news for international applicants.
| Award | Who is eligible | Value |
|---|---|---|
| Kelley Merit Fellowships | All admitted students, considered automatically | Most range from $15,000 to $35,000 a year |
| Dean’s Fellowships | Exceptional admitted candidates | Two years of full tuition |
| Forté Fellows | All admitted candidates can be named | Varies |
| ROMBA Fellows | All admitted candidates can apply | Varies |
| Back to Bloomington Fellowship | IU Bloomington or Kelley Indianapolis undergraduates | $10,000 up to the resident/nonresident difference |
| Hoosier Heritage Fellowship | Indiana college graduates or Indiana high school graduates | $5,000 up to the tuition difference |
| Consortium Fellows | U.S. citizens and permanent residents only | Varies |
Kelley does not offer graduate assistantships at admission. From the spring of first year you can apply for the Professional Student Employee Program, which pays for 5 to 12 hours a week in school offices.
On loans, Kelley says international students can use private lenders, but most require a U.S. citizen or permanent resident cosigner. Kelley’s page does not name Prodigy Finance or MPOWER. Those lenders publish their own lists of supported schools, so check them directly before you rely on either. You can also compare other U.S. funding in our guide to American scholarships for international students.
STEM designation and OPT
Five of Kelley’s seven full-time MBA majors are STEM-designated: Business Analytics, Finance, Marketing, Strategic Analysis of Accounting Information, and Supply Chain and Operations. Entrepreneurship and Corporate Innovation, and Strategy and Leadership, are not. A STEM-designated degree is what makes F-1 graduates eligible to apply for the 24-month STEM extension on top of the standard 12 months of OPT. If you want up to three years of U.S. work authorisation, choose one of the STEM majors.
A note on the +Flex option: Kelley lets students move to the online Kelley Direct programme in year two. Kelley warns that F-1 and J-1 rules require a full in-person load each fall and spring, so most international students who choose the online second year must return home.
Kelley MBA salary and employment
Kelley’s employment page for the Class of 2025 (95 students) reports a median base salary of $127,900 and a median signing bonus of $30,000. Kelley does not publish a three-month placement rate on that page; in a Poets&Quants profile, the programme’s faculty director said Kelley consistently places over 90% of students within 90 days.
| Industry (Class of 2025) | Share of hires | Median base |
|---|---|---|
| Technology | 22.97% | $134,000 |
| Consulting | 16.22% | $175,000 |
| Manufacturing | 14.86% | $125,000 |
| Financial services | 13.51% | $127,000 |
| Consumer packaged goods | 12.16% | $122,500 |
| Healthcare | 5.41% | $134,000 |
Half of graduates took jobs in the Midwest. Kelley does not split outcomes by citizenship or name its top employers on that page. Ask admissions and current international students how many in their year received U.S. sponsorship.
Common mistakes international applicants make with Kelley
- Missing the Phase 1 date. Round 2 has a Phase 1 deadline of 15 December 2026, three weeks before the main deadline.
- Applying in Round 3 or 4. Kelley asks international candidates to use Round 2 at the latest.
- Writing long-term vision in Essay 1 when the prompt asks for the immediate post-MBA role.
- Choosing a non-STEM major without realising it limits OPT to 12 months.
- Assuming a private loan without a cosigner is available. Kelley’s page says most lenders need one.
- Quoting the old 683 GMAT average and skipping the test because it looks out of reach.
Who should apply to Kelley, and who shouldn’t
Apply if you have about four to eight years of experience, a GMAT in the 600s, a clear first job in consulting, finance, tech, marketing or supply chain, and you want a strong school at a nonresident tuition well below many peers. Kelley’s automatic merit awards make it a sensible choice for self-funded applicants.
Think twice if you need a big-city location for networking, if your goal depends heavily on Wall Street or Silicon Valley recruiting, or if you have less than two years of work experience.
