Renaissance University (RNU) Microbiology Cut-Off Mark 2027/2028 and Admission Requirements

Renaissance University, Ugbawka, accepts 150 in the UTME for Microbiology. See the subjects, O’level, the Direct Entry catch for ND holders, fees and the CAPS steps.

The Renaissance University Microbiology cut off mark is 150 in the UTME. Renaissance University (RNU), Ugbawka, publishes one minimum score for every programme it runs in 2026/2027, and that minimum is the same as JAMB’s national minimum for universities. RNU has not published a separate, higher figure for Microbiology.

2027/2028 update: RNU cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.

Microbiology sits in RNU’s Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences beside Biochemistry and the two industrial sciences. RNU writes it as “Micro Biology” on some pages, while JAMB lists it as “Microbiology”, and both refer to the same B.Sc. One detail sets RNU apart in the JAMB brochure: a Direct Entry remark that asks for more than RNU’s own page does. This guide covers that, along with the official figures, a safe target score (my advice), subjects, fees and the CAPS steps.

Is Microbiology on RNU’s JAMB course list?

Yes. It is on both lists that decide whether RNU can admit you into it: RNU’s own programme list and JAMB’s course list for RNU.

When you register, choose Renaissance University first and then pick Microbiology from the course drop-down that JAMB shows for RNU. If the name on the portal ever looks different from the one above, use the portal’s version, because CAPS matches you by that exact course.

RNU was not on the list of institution cut-offs announced at JAMB’s 2026 policy meeting, so its own pages are the only official source for the 150. The 2026/2027 announcement also says candidates who scored 150 or more in the 2023 and 2024 JAMB examinations can apply. That line looks carried over from an older notice, so if you plan to use an old UTME result, ask Admissions before you pay anything.

Safe target score for Microbiology at RNU (my advice)

This is my judgement as an admissions adviser. RNU has not published these bands.

Your UTME scoreMy read for Microbiology at RNU
Below 150Not eligible for RNU this session
150 to 169Eligible. Fair chance if all five O’level credits are in place
170 to 199Comfortable
200 and aboveStrong, and it keeps public universities open as a backup

Microbiology has no council-set quota, and RNU fills its science places mainly on the 150 minimum and the O’level. Because RNU’s FAQ says some courses may need more than 150, I would still aim for 180 or more, which also gives you room to consider a public university.

UTME subject combination and O’level for RNU Microbiology

RequirementMicrobiology at RNU
UTME subjectsUse of English, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics or Mathematics (JAMB brochure)
O’level (RNU table)Five credits including English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology
O’level (JAMB general)Five credits in English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology and Physics
SittingsNot more than two (RNU’s general rule)
Awaiting resultsNo RNU rule published; ask Admissions
Post-UTMENone published

RNU’s table and JAMB’s general line agree on the five credits. Mathematics or Physics is your choice for the fourth UTME subject; most candidates who are strong in calculations pick Physics, while those who struggle with it take Mathematics. Either is fine for JAMB, but you still need a Physics credit at O’level for RNU.

Some universities in the brochure accept Agricultural Science for Biology in Microbiology. RNU’s table names Biology, so I would not rely on that substitution here.

Direct Entry into Microbiology at RNU

RNU’s Direct Entry page lists Microbiology among the programmes open to Direct Entry. It gives one set of rules for all courses:

QualificationRNU’s stated minimum
A’level (Cambridge, JUPEB or IJMB)At least two passes in relevant subjects
ND or HNDAt least Lower Credit from a recognised institution
NCEAt least merit in a related field
Also requiredO’level result, passport photographs and JAMB Direct Entry registration for the current year

JAMB’s general Direct Entry line for Microbiology is two A’level passes in Chemistry and one of Biology, Zoology or Botany. The brochure also carries a remark under “RENAISSANCE” asking for an ND at Upper Credit from a recognised institution plus the UTME requirements. RNU’s own Direct Entry page says Lower Credit. The two don’t match, so if you hold an ND with Lower Credit, get Admissions to confirm in writing that it is acceptable for Microbiology before you register Direct Entry with RNU.

Does RNU write Post-UTME for Microbiology?

RNU’s official pages describe a free online application and a document check. None of them mention a Post-UTME test, a screening fee or an aggregate formula. The Direct Entry page says applicants may be asked to attend an interview or bring more documents, so treat any call from Admissions seriously. Every offer still has to go through JAMB CAPS, which means your score, subjects and uploaded O’level must all line up.

Worked example (illustrative)

RNU has no published aggregate, so this example checks eligibility and the money needed before resumption, using RNU’s own figures. Take Somto, who scored 163 with English, Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics, and has credits in English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology from one NECO sitting.

  1. Score check: 163 minus 150 = 13. She is eligible, though close to the line.
  2. UTME check: Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics fit JAMB’s Microbiology line.
  3. O’level check: all five credits in one sitting.
  4. Money before resumption on three instalments: 50% of ₦1,800,000 = ₦900,000, plus ₦50,000 acceptance = ₦950,000.
  5. Money before resumption on four instalments: 40% of ₦1,800,000 = ₦720,000, plus ₦50,000 acceptance = ₦770,000.

Ifeanyi has an ND in Science Laboratory Technology at Lower Credit and wants Direct Entry. RNU’s own page accepts Lower Credit, but the brochure remark says Upper Credit. He should ask Admissions which applies before paying for JAMB Direct Entry registration with RNU as his choice.

Microbiology is in RNU’s ₦1,800,000 band with Biochemistry, Industrial Chemistry, Industrial Physics, Nursing and Law. The computing degrees and Medical Laboratory Science are cheaper at ₦1,600,000, and History and International Studies and Mass Communication sit at ₦1,500,000. The tuition schedule doesn’t name a session, so confirm the current figure with the Bursar before you pay.

Your chances of getting Microbiology at RNU

RNU does not publish applicant numbers or admission totals by course. Going by how private universities in the South East fill science places, a candidate with 150 or more, all five credits and the fees ready normally has a fair chance. That is my judgement, not an RNU statistic.

Microbiology shares its UTME subjects with Biochemistry and Medical Laboratory Science. If you would take any of the three, say so to Admissions, because a change of course on CAPS within RNU is easier than starting over elsewhere.

JAMB set 30 November 2026 as the 2026/2027 admission deadline for private universities, as reported by the News Agency of Nigeria on 11 May 2026. That date belongs to the current cycle. For 2027/2028, JAMB will set a fresh date at its next policy meeting, so register early and keep RNU as first choice.

How to apply for Microbiology at RNU, step by step

  1. Get your JAMB profile code: send NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the line linked to your NIN.
  2. Register the right subjects: Use of English plus Biology, Chemistry, and Physics or Mathematics. Choose Renaissance University first and pick Microbiology. If you chose another school, RNU says you must do a JAMB change of institution before it can admit you.
  3. Upload your O’level to CAPS: RNU lists this as part of its own process, and its on-campus JAMB CBT centre handles O’level upload, change of institution and CAPS acceptance for a small charge.
  4. Fill the RNU online form: go to rnu.edu.ng/admissions/regular_admission and choose Microbiology. There is no application fee, and you can also apply in person at the Admissions Office in Ugbawka.
  5. Answer any follow-up from Admissions: keep your phone on. RNU publishes no test, but it may ask for an interview or more documents.
  6. Accept the offer on CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, open Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS. Accept only when the offer shows RNU and Microbiology. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains each status.
  7. Pay acceptance and the first instalment: ₦50,000 acceptance, then the first instalment of the session fee. Pay only into the university account shown on rnu.edu.ng and confirm with the Bursar.
  8. Clear with your documents: O’level result, four passport photographs, JAMB result, birth certificate, local government identification letter or certificate of origin, NIN slip, fee receipts, and A’level result for Direct Entry.

Warning

RNU charges no application fee. Anyone who asks you to pay for an RNU form, or promises a guaranteed Microbiology slot for money, is not acting for the university. A genuine offer shows on your JAMB CAPS page, and fees go only into the account shown on rnu.edu.ng, confirmed with the Bursar.

Studying Microbiology at Renaissance University

Microbiology is a B.Sc. in RNU’s Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences in Ugbawka, Nkanu East Local Government Area of Enugu State. The NUC licensed RNU in 2005. A Microbiology degree for UTME entrants in Nigeria normally runs four years; RNU’s pages don’t state the duration.

On accreditation, RNU’s pages say its courses are accredited by the NUC but don’t give a result for each course. I searched the NUC’s published programme reports and found none that names RNU for Microbiology, and the NUC’s 1990 to 2025 results file can’t be read as far down as RNU. In June 2024 the NUC fully re-accredited five RNU programmes (Law, Economics, History and International Studies, Computer Science and Accounting), according to a Myschoolnews report of 30 July 2024; Microbiology was not one of them. So the NUC status of Microbiology at RNU is not confirmed here. Ask Admissions for it in writing before you pay acceptance.

What you study

  • Foundations: general biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics.
  • Core microbiology: bacteriology, virology, mycology, microbial physiology and genetics.
  • Applied areas: food and industrial microbiology, environmental and public health microbiology, immunology.
  • Lab work and final stages: culture and staining techniques, industrial training (SIWES) and a research project.

That outline is how Microbiology degrees in Nigeria are usually built; RNU has not published its own course list.

Careers

Microbiologists work in food and beverage quality control, water treatment, pharmaceutical production, public health programmes, research institutes and teaching. Hospital diagnostic work in Nigeria is licensed for Medical Laboratory Science graduates, so if you want to run hospital lab tests yourself, compare this degree with RNU’s Medical Laboratory Science first.

Biology and Chemistry are the heavy subjects here, so use our JAMB Biology syllabus and JAMB Chemistry syllabus to plan revision. Picked the wrong subjects? Our JAMB change of course guide explains the fix.

Mistakes that cost Microbiology applicants an RNU place

  • Missing Physics at O’level: RNU’s table asks for it even if you took Mathematics in the UTME.
  • Assuming Lower Credit ND is enough for Direct Entry: the brochure remark says Upper Credit; confirm first.
  • Mixing up Microbiology and Medical Laboratory Science: only the second leads to a licence for hospital lab work.
  • Paying an agent for a form: RNU’s form is free.
  • RNU not first choice: fix it with a change of institution before RNU starts proposing admissions.
  • Accepting on CAPS and stopping there: acceptance fee and clearance at Ugbawka still follow.

Sources and updates

The 150 minimum, the O’level table, the first-choice rule, the CAPS step, the document list and the note on RNU’s JAMB CBT centre come from RNU’s undergraduate admissions page (checked 30 October 2026). Session fees, the ₦50,000 acceptance fee and the no-application-fee rule come from RNU’s tuition schedule; instalment plans, hostel rules and the remark that some programmes may need more than 150 come from its admissions FAQ; the admission routes, application link and the line on 2023 and 2024 scores come from its 2026/2027 admission announcement. Direct Entry rules come from RNU’s Direct Entry page. The course check uses Myschool’s reprint of JAMB’s course list for RNU. The UTME, O’level and Direct Entry lines are JAMB’s brochure requirements as reprinted by Myschool, Microbiology entry (checked 30 October 2026; RNU appears as “RENAISSANCE” in the Direct Entry remarks). The national minimum of 150 and the 30 November 2026 deadline for private universities were set at JAMB’s 2026 policy meeting, as reported by the News Agency of Nigeria.
