The Renaissance University cut off mark for Medical Laboratory Science is 150 in the UTME. Renaissance University (RNU), Ugbawka, publishes that one minimum for all its programmes for 2026/2027, the same as JAMB’s national minimum for universities. RNU has not published a separate cut-off for Medical Laboratory Science (MLS).
2027/2028 update: RNU cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.
MLS costs less at RNU than Nursing or Law: ₦50,000 acceptance and ₦1.6 million for the session, with hostel and meals included. I could not confirm RNU’s approval by the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN), so check that before you pay. Below are the official figures, a safe target score (my advice), subjects, screening, fees and the CAPS steps.

RNU Medical Laboratory Science cut-off history
| Session | Figure | What it is | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026/2027 | 150 | RNU minimum JAMB score for every programme, including Medical Laboratory Science | Official (RNU undergraduate page, FAQ and admission announcement) |
| 2026/2027 | 150 | JAMB national minimum for universities | Official (JAMB policy meeting, 11 May 2026) |
| 2026/2027 | Not published | Separate departmental cut-off for Medical Laboratory Science | RNU says some programmes may need more than 150 but lists no figure |
| 2025/2026 | Not confirmed | RNU figure for that session | Blogs print numbers, but I found no RNU notice to back them |
RNU’s 2026/2027 announcement also says candidates who scored 150 or more in the 2023 and 2024 JAMB examinations can apply. That wording looks carried over from an earlier session, so if you are relying on an older UTME result, ask Admissions before you pay anything. Some blogs print a 2025/2026 RNU cut-off without citing any RNU notice, and I would not plan around those numbers.
Safe target score for MLS at RNU (my advice)
This is my judgement as an admissions adviser. RNU has not published these numbers.
| Your UTME score | My read for Medical Laboratory Science at RNU |
|---|---|
| Below 150 | Not eligible for RNU this session |
| 150 to 169 | Eligible. Possible with good science credits |
| 170 to 199 | Comfortable for a private university MLS intake |
| 200 and above | Strong. This is where I would aim |
MLS is a regulated health course, and its council inspects laboratories and staffing before approving a programme, which limits how many students a school can take. RNU hasn’t published an MLS quota or a higher cut-off, and its FAQ says some programmes may need more than 150. Aiming for 180 or more gives you room if RNU tightens admission.
UTME subject combination and O’level for RNU Medical Laboratory Science
| Requirement | Medical Laboratory Science at RNU |
|---|---|
| UTME subjects | Use of English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology (JAMB brochure general requirement; confirm RNU’s line on your JAMB e-brochure) |
| O’level | Five credits: English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology (RNU’s own table) |
| Exams accepted | WAEC or NECO (named by RNU) |
| Sittings | Not more than two (RNU) |
| Awaiting results | No RNU rule published; ask Admissions |
| Post-UTME | None published |
JAMB’s general line for MLS is Physics, Chemistry and Biology with Use of English. A few universities have waivers on the brochure, for example Babcock accepts any three of Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics. RNU has no waiver on the brochure reprint, so register Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
RNU’s O’level table for MLS is the same as for Nursing: English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology, in not more than two sittings.
Direct Entry into Medical Laboratory Science at RNU
RNU’s Direct Entry page lists these routes. It does not publish separate Direct Entry rules for each course, so read them alongside the subject requirements above.
| Qualification | RNU’s stated minimum |
|---|---|
| A’level (Cambridge, JUPEB or IJMB) | At least two passes in relevant subjects |
| ND or HND | At least Lower Credit from a recognised institution |
| NCE | At least merit in a related field |
| Also required | O’level result, passport photographs and a JAMB Direct Entry registration for the current year |
JAMB’s general Direct Entry rule for MLS asks for A’level passes in Physics, Chemistry and Biology or Zoology. RNU hasn’t published a separate MLS rule, so if you hold an ND or HND in a laboratory field, ask Admissions whether RNU counts it as related before you register for Direct Entry.
Does RNU write Post-UTME for Medical Laboratory Science?
RNU’s official pages describe a free online application followed by a document check. None of them mention a Post-UTME test, a screening fee or an aggregate formula. RNU still needs you on JAMB CAPS with an eligible score, the right subjects and your O’level uploaded, because every admission in Nigeria goes through CAPS.
RNU’s Direct Entry page adds that applicants may be asked to attend an interview or bring extra documents. Keep your originals ready, because the clearance desk will compare your O’level subjects with the table above.
Worked example (illustrative)
RNU has not published an aggregate formula, so this example checks eligibility and the money you need before resumption, using RNU’s own figures. Take Kosisochukwu, who scored 172 with English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology, and has credits in English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology from one sitting.
- Score check: 172 minus 150 = 22. She clears RNU’s minimum by 22 marks and sits inside my comfortable band.
- Subject check: her UTME matches JAMB’s MLS line and her five credits match RNU’s table.
- Approval check: she asks Admissions whether the MLSCN approves RNU’s BMLS programme.
- Money before resumption on three instalments: 50% of ₦1,600,000 = ₦800,000, plus ₦50,000 acceptance = ₦850,000.
- Money before resumption on four instalments: 40% of ₦1,600,000 = ₦640,000, plus ₦50,000 acceptance = ₦690,000.
If her Physics result were a D7, she would need to rewrite Physics and get a credit before RNU could admit her, whatever her UTME score.
RNU Medical Laboratory Science acceptance fee and school fees
| Item | Medical Laboratory Science at RNU | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Application fee | None | RNU FAQ |
| Acceptance fee | ₦50,000 | RNU FAQ |
| Session fee | ₦1,600,000 | RNU 2026/2027 admission announcement |
| What the session fee covers | Tuition, accommodation and three meals a day | RNU announcement and FAQ |
| Instalments | Three (50%, 20%, 30%) or four (40%, 20%, 20%, 20%); first instalment before resumption | RNU FAQ |
| Hostel | Compulsory; no more than three students to a room; no cooking | RNU FAQ |
RNU groups MLS with Computer Science, Accounting, Software Engineering and Cyber Security Science at ₦1,600,000, below the ₦1,800,000 for Law and Nursing. The acceptance fee is also lower: ₦50,000 instead of ₦100,000.
Your chances of getting Medical Laboratory Science at RNU
RNU is a private, fee-paying university, and it does not publish how many people apply or how many it admits per course. From how private universities in the South East usually fill their places, a candidate who meets the 150 minimum, has the right O’level credits and can pay the fees normally stands a fair chance. That is my reading of the market, not an RNU statistic.
For MLS my bigger worry is professional approval. A BMLS graduate needs MLSCN induction and an internship to practise, so ask Admissions whether the MLSCN approves RNU’s programme and how many students it admits each year. If MLS is full, Microbiology and Biochemistry are in RNU’s science faculty and use a similar science base.
How to apply for Medical Laboratory Science at RNU, step by step
- Get your JAMB profile code: send NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the phone line linked to your NIN.
- Register the UTME with the right subjects: Use of English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Pick Renaissance University as your first choice. RNU says candidates who chose another school must do a JAMB change of institution before it can admit them.
- Upload your O’level to CAPS: RNU lists this as a step in its own application process. If you can’t do it at a CBT centre near you, RNU says its on-campus JAMB CBT centre handles O’level upload, change of institution and CAPS acceptance for a small charge.
- Fill the RNU online form: go to rnu.edu.ng/admissions/regular_admission and choose Medical Laboratory Science. RNU charges no application fee, and its announcement says the form takes about three minutes. You can also apply in person at the Admissions Office in Ugbawka.
- Answer any follow-up from Admissions: RNU publishes no Post-UTME test. Its Direct Entry page says applicants may be asked to attend an interview or bring more documents, so keep your phone on and your papers ready.
- Accept the offer on CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, open Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS. Accept only when the offer shows RNU and Medical Laboratory Science. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains each status.
- Pay acceptance and the first instalment: ₦50,000 acceptance, then at least the first instalment of the ₦1,600,000 session fee before resumption. Pay only into the university account shown on rnu.edu.ng and confirm the payment with the Bursar.
- Clear with your documents: O’level result, four passport photographs, JAMB result, birth certificate, local government identification letter or certificate of origin, NIN slip, acceptance and school fee receipts, and A’level result for Direct Entry.
Warning
Confirm RNU’s MLSCN approval with Admissions before you pay the ₦50,000 acceptance fee. RNU’s form is free, a genuine offer shows on your JAMB CAPS page, and fees go only into the university account shown on rnu.edu.ng, confirmed with the Bursar.
Studying Medical Laboratory Science at Renaissance University
Medical Laboratory Science is in RNU’s Faculty of Health Sciences with Nursing Science. RNU is in Ugbawka, Nkanu East Local Government Area of Enugu State, about five minutes from ESUT’s Agbani campus, and the NUC licensed it as a private university in 2005. The degree is the Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (BMLS), which normally runs for five years in Nigeria; RNU’s pages don’t state the duration.
RNU’s pages say its courses are accredited by the NUC but give no status for each course. I found no MLSCN source confirming RNU’s programme, and a reported RNU re-accreditation of five programmes didn’t say which ones. Treat MLSCN approval as not confirmed until RNU shows it to you.
What you study
- Early years: basic sciences, then anatomy, physiology and biochemistry.
- Professional years: haematology and blood transfusion science, medical microbiology, clinical chemistry, histopathology and immunology, with laboratory postings.
- After graduation: MLSCN induction and a one-year internship in an approved laboratory.
Careers
Medical laboratory scientists work in hospital and public health laboratories, blood banks, research institutes, pharmaceutical quality control and diagnostic companies. Some go on to postgraduate study in a specialty.

Mistakes that cost MLS applicants an RNU place
- Mathematics in place of Physics in the UTME: RNU has no waiver on the brochure.
- Missing a science credit: RNU’s table needs Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
- Not asking about MLSCN approval: do it before paying acceptance.
- RNU not your first choice: fix it with a JAMB change of institution.
- Accepting on CAPS and stopping there: acceptance fee and clearance at Ugbawka come next.
If you are sitting the UTME again, read when JAMB 2027 registration starts and how to check your JAMB result.

Sources and updates
The 150 minimum, the O’level table, the first-choice rule, the CAPS step, the document list and the note on RNU’s JAMB CBT centre come from RNU’s undergraduate admissions page (checked 29 October 2026). The acceptance fees, the no-application-fee rule, the instalment plans, the hostel rules and the remark that some programmes may need more than 150 come from RNU’s admissions FAQ. Session fees by programme, the admission routes and the application link come from RNU’s 2026/2027 admission announcement. Direct Entry routes come from RNU’s Direct Entry page. The national minimum of 150 for universities was set at JAMB’s 2026 policy meeting on 11 May 2026, as reported by the News Agency of Nigeria; News Central TV’s list of institution cut-offs from that meeting does not include RNU. The UTME and Direct Entry lines for MLS, and the Babcock waiver, are JAMB’s general requirements as reprinted by Myschool; RNU has no remark on that page. Safe target scores, the odds discussion and the worked example are my advice as an admissions adviser, not RNU figures. This page will be updated when RNU publishes its 2027/2028 admission notice or a departmental cut-off.
