The NBU cut off mark for Mechatronics Engineering is 160 in the UTME. Nigerian British University (NBU), Asa, a private university in Ukwa West LGA of Abia State, lists Mechatronics Engineering among its 160+ programmes on its official 2026/2027 undergraduate admission page. That is 10 marks above JAMB’s national minimum of 150 for universities. NBU has not published a separate departmental merit score for Mechatronics.
2027/2028 update: NBU cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.
Mechatronics Engineering is on NBU’s current programme list, in the Faculty of Engineering next to Electrical and Electronic, Computer, and Information and Communication Engineering. I could not open JAMB’s own institution list for NBU, but the course list for NBU on universitycourses.ng (last updated 28 February 2026), which appears to follow JAMB’s course names, includes it as “Mechatronics Engineering”. Register that exact name under Nigerian British University. That list also shows a “Mechanical / Production Engineering” entry that NBU’s own 2026/2027 page does not advertise, so do not pick that one by mistake.
Below you will find the official numbers, a safe target score (my advice), the JAMB and NBU subject rules, the 2026/2027 fees, the application steps and what I could and could not confirm about accreditation.

NBU Mechatronics Engineering cut-off history
| Session | Figure | What it is | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026/2027 | 160 | NBU minimum UTME score to apply for Mechatronics Engineering | Official (NBU undergraduate admission page) |
| 2026/2027 | 150 | JAMB national minimum for all universities | Official (JAMB policy meeting, 11 May 2026) |
| 2026 (as labelled) | 150 in a course table, “160+” in the page header | Figures printed by Varsity.ng | Unofficial and internally inconsistent |
| 2025/2026 and earlier | No NBU figure found | NBU was licensed in April 2022 and commissioned in February 2023 | Nothing official located |
NBU is a young university, so there is very little history to read. The one figure you can rely on is the 160 on its own 2026/2027 admission page. The 150 is JAMB’s national floor, and NBU set its own bar 10 marks above it. NBU was also absent from the list of institution-declared cut-offs that News Central published after JAMB’s 2026 policy meeting, so the 160 came from the university’s page, not from that meeting. Treat any other Mechatronics figure you see on a blog as a guess.
Safe target score for Mechatronics Engineering at NBU (my advice)
This is my judgement, not an NBU rule. NBU does not publish how many people apply for Mechatronics or how many it admits. What we do know is that it is a young private university charging close to ₦3 million in the first year, so I expect its applicant pool to be much smaller than at a federal university. Meeting the minimum, choosing NBU on CAPS and uploading complete documents counts for more here than squeezing out extra marks.
| Your UTME score | My read for NBU engineering |
|---|---|
| Below 160 | Not eligible at NBU this session |
| 160 to 169 | Eligible; a place is realistic if your O’level and documents are complete |
| 170 to 189 | Comfortable for NBU |
| 190 and above | Strong; you may also be competitive at older private universities |
For the 2027 UTME, I would aim for at least 180. That gives you room if NBU raises its bar, and it keeps a public university open as a backup. Score-wise, Mechatronics at NBU sits in the same 160 tier as Computer Science and Accounting, below Law and Nursing at 180.
UTME subject combination and O’level for NBU Mechatronics Engineering
| Requirement | Mechatronics Engineering at NBU |
|---|---|
| UTME subjects | Use of English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry |
| O’level (JAMB general line) | Five credits: English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and one other science |
| O’level (NBU Engineering rule) | Five credits: English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, plus Biology, Geography or another science |
| Sittings | Not more than two (NBU) |
| Exams accepted | WAEC, NECO or NABTEB (standard; NBU’s page says “O’Level” without naming them) |
| Minimum age | 16 by 30 September 2026 |
Both sources agree on the core: Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry in the UTME, and credits in English, Maths, Physics and Chemistry at O’level. JAMB’s brochure lists Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics for Mechatronics Engineering, and NBU’s page says it prefers Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry for all its engineering degrees. Use of English is compulsory for everyone. None of the special remarks on the Myschool brochure page names NBU, so no NBU-specific waiver applies.
Your fifth O’level credit is where you have a choice. Further Mathematics or Technical Drawing is the most useful for Mechatronics because the course leans on mathematics and drawing from the first year. Biology or Geography also satisfies NBU’s rule.
Direct Entry
JAMB’s general Direct Entry rule for Mechatronics Engineering is A-level passes in any two of Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. NBU accepts A-level in relevant subjects, OND, HND or a first degree, and asks Direct Entry applicants to send transcripts to the Registrar at KM 10 Aba Port Harcourt Expressway. The page still shows 1 September 2026 for transcripts, which has passed, so email admissions@nbu.edu.ng to ask what applies to you. An OND in Mechanical, Electrical or Computer Engineering is the natural route in.
How NBU screens Mechatronics Engineering applicants
NBU’s 2026/2027 page describes an online application with document upload. It does not announce a post-UTME test, an interview or a screening fee, and it gives no aggregate formula. A blog (AbsTechConnect, 25 May 2026) said NBU’s post-UTME form was “now on sale” but gave no price, date or portal, and cited no NBU notice. Go by the university’s own page.
| Detail | NBU 2026/2027 (official page) |
|---|---|
| Minimum UTME score | 160 for Mechatronics Engineering |
| Applications close | 30 November 2026 (the page calls it a Friday, but 30 November 2026 is a Monday) |
| Where to apply | application.nbu.edu.ng |
| CAPS rule | Change to NBU on CAPS by 30 November 2026 if it was not your first choice; the CAPS course must match the portal course |
| O’level | Five credits: English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, plus Biology, Geography or another science; at most two sittings |
| Age | At least 16 by 30 September 2026 |
| Test or interview | None announced |
| Application fee | Not stated on the page |
JAMB set 30 November 2026 as the 2026/2027 admission deadline for private universities (NAN, 11 May 2026), the same day NBU’s own window closes. If you are still trying to get into NBU this session, do the CAPS change and the portal application early rather than in the final week, because NBU will only consider you once your CAPS course and your portal course match.
Worked example for Mechatronics Engineering applicants
NBU has not published an aggregate formula, and with no test announced there is no post-UTME score to combine. What you can work out is your margin over 160 and over a safe target.
Take Ifeanyi from Aba, who scored 174 with credits in English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Further Mathematics from one sitting.
- Eligibility: 174 minus 160 = 14. He clears NBU’s Mechatronics minimum by 14 marks.
- Against my target: 180 minus 174 = 6. Comfortable for NBU, just short of the 180 I recommend for 2027 planners.
- O’level check: five relevant credits, one sitting. Further Maths counts as his “other science”.
- Paperwork: NBU was his second choice, so he must change to NBU on CAPS by 30 November 2026 and apply on the portal for Mechatronics Engineering, matching his CAPS course.
Chiamaka scored 158. 158 minus 160 = minus 2. She is under NBU’s 160 even though she clears JAMB’s 150, so NBU will not consider her for Mechatronics this session. If she wants to stay in engineering she needs a 2027 UTME score of 160 or more.
NBU Mechatronics Engineering school fees for 2026/2027
NBU’s tuition page lists fees by faculty, not by course, so Mechatronics Engineering pays the Engineering figures below. They are for new first-year students in the 2026/2027 session.
| Item | Engineering (2026/2027, first year) |
|---|---|
| Acceptance fee | ₦40,000 |
| Tuition | ₦750,000 |
| Development levy | ₦100,000 |
| Accommodation | ₦876,000 |
| Other charges | ₦1,184,000 |
| Total for a first-year Engineering student | ₦2,950,000 |
Accommodation is ₦876,000 of that total. The page has tabs for Classic and Deluxe rooms but shows only one accommodation figure, so ask the Bursary which room type it covers. Computing and IT pays ₦951,540 in tuition, more than Engineering’s ₦750,000, although the totals end up close (₦2,926,000 against ₦2,950,000).
- Instalments: NBU wants full payment by the start of first semester; otherwise at least 50% of all fees at the start of the session and the balance before second semester.
- Late registration: course registration must be done within the first three weeks of resumption, and a ₦200,000 late fee applies after that.
- How to pay: through the university portals using Global Pay or Paystack.
- Changes: the page says fees may change without notice. The Bursary lines on the page are 0803 733 4477 and 0706 694 4981.
How to apply for Mechatronics Engineering at NBU, step by step
- Get your JAMB profile code: send NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the phone line linked to your NIN.
- Register the UTME correctly: pick Mechatronics Engineering under Nigerian British University and register Use of English, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. If you are planning for 2027, read when JAMB 2027 registration starts.
- Make NBU your choice on CAPS: NBU says candidates who did not choose it first must change to NBU on JAMB CAPS on or before 30 November 2026. Our JAMB change of institution guide shows how.
- Upload your O’level to CAPS: do it at a JAMB-accredited centre so the university can see your grades when it considers you.
- Apply on NBU’s portal: go to application.nbu.edu.ng, choose Mechatronics Engineering (the same course that is on your CAPS) and upload every document requested. NBU says incomplete uploads will not be considered.
- Accept on CAPS: when NBU offers you admission, log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, open Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS. JAMB gives four weeks to accept. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains each status.
- Pay acceptance and fees: NBU’s fee table lists a ₦40,000 acceptance fee. Pay only through the university portals (Global Pay or Paystack), then complete course registration within three weeks of resumption.
NBU’s page asks for “all required documents” without naming them. My advice is to have these scanned and ready before you open the form: your O’level result(s), your UTME result slip, proof of age (NBU wants applicants to be at least 16 by 30 September 2026) and a recent passport photograph.
Warning
NBU charges fees close to ₦3 million a year, which makes its applicants a target for people selling “admission slots”. A genuine NBU offer always shows on your JAMB CAPS, and JAMB has said that admission outside CAPS is illegal. Pay only through NBU’s own portals, and ask NBU in writing about your programme’s accreditation before you pay school fees.
Studying Mechatronics Engineering at NBU
Mechatronics Engineering sits in NBU’s Faculty of Engineering. It leads to a B.Eng., which normally takes five years in Nigeria; NBU’s page does not state the duration. The university’s main site is at Km 10 Port Harcourt/Aba Expressway, Asa.
What you study
- Early years: engineering mathematics, physics, chemistry, engineering drawing, workshop practice and introductory programming.
- Core mechatronics: mechanics and machine design, electrical circuits, electronics, sensors and actuators, control systems, microcontrollers and embedded systems.
- Later years: robotics, automation, PLCs and industrial control, with the industrial training (SIWES) placement that Nigerian engineering degrees include, and a final-year project.
Accreditation: NUC and COREN
NUC licensed NBU as a private university in April 2022, and NUC’s Monday Bulletin of 8 August 2022 lists “Nigerian British University, Asa, Abia State” among private universities established in 2022. A university licence is not the same as programme accreditation. I searched NUC’s published accreditation reports and found none naming NBU’s Mechatronics Engineering programme, and the NBU part of NUC’s “Accreditation Results 1990 to 2025” file could not be read. A Vanguard headline from March 2025 says NUC accredited 24 courses for a “British University in Nigeria”, but the article would not open, so I cannot tell you which university or which courses it covers. NBU’s Mechatronics Engineering accreditation status is therefore not confirmed.
Engineering has a second gate. To register as an engineer in Nigeria after graduation, your degree programme also needs accreditation from the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN). I found no COREN accreditation for any NBU engineering programme. Programmes at a university this young usually run on NUC approval until the first accreditation visit, which tends to come as the first set nears final year. Before you pay, email admissions@nbu.edu.ng and ask two questions: what is the current NUC status of the programme, and when is the COREN visit expected?
Careers
Mechatronics graduates work in manufacturing and process plants (maintenance and automation), oil and gas service firms around Port Harcourt and Aba, robotics and embedded-systems start-ups, building automation and power equipment. Without COREN registration your options shrink to roles that do not need a licensed engineer, which is why the accreditation question matters.

Mistakes that cost Mechatronics Engineering applicants an NBU place
- Picking the wrong engineering course on JAMB: NBU’s JAMB list may show “Mechanical / Production Engineering” as well. NBU advertises Mechatronics Engineering for 2026/2027, so register that.
- Dropping Chemistry for Biology in the UTME: JAMB’s combination for Mechatronics is Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry.
- Assuming 150 is enough: it is JAMB’s floor; NBU’s minimum is 160.
- Course mismatch: NBU says your CAPS course must match the course you choose on its portal.
- Leaving out documents: NBU will not consider incomplete uploads.
- Accepting on CAPS and stopping there: acceptance fee payment and course registration at NBU are separate steps, with a ₦200,000 late registration fee after three weeks.
If your 2026 score or course does not fit, read JAMB change of course and how to check your JAMB result and what to do with the score.
