ABSU Cut-Off Mark for Public Health 2027/2028: Requirements

ABSU’s minimum for Public Health is 150 in the UTME with ABSU as first or second choice. See the correct JAMB subjects (Physics, not Maths), O’level, Direct Entry, screening, NUC status and CAPS steps.

The ABSU cut off mark for Public Health is 150 in the UTME. Abia State University, Uturu set 150 as the minimum for every regular degree course in its 2026/2027 screening notice and released no separate figure for Public Health. You could screen if ABSU was your first or second choice, or after changing your institution to ABSU.

2027/2028 update: ABSU cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.

Public Health is one of the health courses in ABSU’s College of Medicine and Health Sciences, and it shares applicants with Nursing, Medical Laboratory Science and Medicine. The one rule many candidates get wrong is the UTME combination: JAMB’s brochure fixes Physics, Chemistry and Biology, with no Mathematics option. Below are the official figures, my safe target score, the full subject rules, Direct Entry, screening, a worked example, the CAPS steps and what the degree leads to.

Figures you see on blogs for an “ABSU Public Health cut-off” do not come with an ABSU document. ABSU does not publish the lowest score admitted per course, so those numbers are estimates at best.

Safe target score for Public Health at ABSU (my advice)

ABSU has published nothing like this. The bands come from my reading of how health courses outside Medicine and Nursing usually fill at state universities in the South East.

Your UTME scoreMy read for ABSU Public Health
Below 150Not eligible for ABSU screening
150 to 169Eligible; unlikely unless your O’level grades are very strong
170 to 189Possible
190 to 219Competitive
220 and aboveStrong

For the 2027 UTME I would aim for 190 or more, with all five science credits in place. If you land below that, register for screening anyway and think about Microbiology or Biochemistry as acceptable second options, since both use Biology and Chemistry.

ABSU is an Abia State Government university that admits from every state. The 2026/2027 notice had no catchment rule, so your score and O’level grades decide your chances.

ABSU Public Health subject combination and O’level requirements

JAMB’s brochure entry for Public Health, reprinted by Myschool, lists Physics, Chemistry and Biology for the UTME, with Use of English compulsory. The entry has no ABSU remark. Its only special remarks are for ADELEKE and ABUAD.

UTME subjectStatus
Use of EnglishCompulsory
PhysicsCompulsory
ChemistryCompulsory
BiologyCompulsory

Some guides list “Physics or Mathematics” as the third subject for Public Health. That is not what the brochure entry says. Write Physics.

O’level rules for Public Health at ABSU

RequirementWhat applies
General brochure ruleFive credits in Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, Physics and English Language
ABSU remarkNone, so the general rule applies
ABSU notice“Basic five O’level credit passes” under ABSU’s entry requirements
Exams acceptedWAEC, NECO or NABTEB (JAMB’s usual list)
SittingsThe entry says nothing about sittings and ABSU has not stated a rule; one sitting is safer

Direct Entry into ABSU Public Health

The brochure gives two Direct Entry routes. The first is two A level passes from Biology or Zoology, Chemistry and Physics, backed by O’level credits that include Mathematics, Physics and English Language. The second is for registered nurses: a nursing registration (the brochure writes NRN) or an approved equivalent, plus five O’level credits including English and four science subjects.

Neither route carries an ABSU remark, and ABSU’s 2026/2027 notice invited Direct Entry candidates university-wide. If you are a registered nurse or hold A levels, confirm with ABSU’s admissions office that Public Health is taking DE candidates for the session before you buy the form.

How ABSU screening works for Public Health

ABSU’s 2026/2027 screening notice was signed by the Registrar, Dr Acho Elendu, and reprinted by Myschool on 8 June 2026 and Osilight on 9 June 2026. I could not open the original on ABSU’s website, but the two reprints agree. Expect a similar process for 2027/2028 and follow the new notice when it comes out.

The bank names came out garbled in the reprint, so use the payment options the ABSU portal shows you. Because the notice describes uploads and no test, my working assumption is that ABSU ranks applicants on UTME score and O’level grades. Keep checking the portal after you register in case a later notice adds a step.

Worked example for two Public Health candidates

ABSU has not published an aggregate formula. This example only compares scores with the official minimum and my target, so treat it as illustrative.

Ngozi scored 198 with C4 in English, B3 in Mathematics, C5 in Physics, B2 in Chemistry and B2 in Biology, all from one WAEC sitting.

  1. Eligibility: 198 minus 150 = 48. She clears ABSU’s floor.
  2. Against my target: 198 minus 190 = 8 above the score I call competitive.
  3. O’level check: all five required credits in one sitting.
  4. Advice: register for screening as soon as it opens and accept quickly on CAPS.

Kelechi scored 201 but wrote Mathematics instead of Physics in the UTME. His score is higher than Ngozi’s, but his combination does not match the brochure line for Public Health, and CAPS checks your UTME subjects against the course you are offered. He should use a JAMB change of course to a programme his subjects fit, or plan to register correctly in 2027.

How to apply for Public Health at ABSU, step by step

  1. Get your JAMB profile code: send NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the phone line linked to your NIN.
  2. Register the UTME with ABSU first or second: pick Public Health and sit Use of English with Physics, Chemistry and Biology. If ABSU is not among your choices, do a JAMB change of institution before screening.
  3. Upload your O’level to CAPS: do this at a JAMB-accredited CBT centre. Awaiting result candidates must upload as soon as results are out, because CAPS cannot treat you as fully qualified without them.
  4. Register for ABSU screening: on www.abiastateuniversity.edu.ng once ABSU announces it, then upload your documents on portal.abiastateuniversity.edu.ng.
  5. Pay the screening fee: ₦2,000 in 2026/2027, by e-payment. Print the receipt and keep it for clearance.
  6. Accept on CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, open Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS. JAMB gave candidates four weeks to accept in 2026.
  7. Pay acceptance and clear: ABSU’s acceptance fee and school fees were not in any source I reached. Pay only the amount on the invoice the ABSU portal generates.

Warning

ABSU gave one minimum of 150 for every course, and real offers appear only on JAMB CAPS. Do not pay anyone who promises a Public Health “slot” or a name on a “departmental list”. Pay ABSU only through its portal.

JAMB set 31 October 2026 as the 2026/2027 admission deadline for public universities, ABSU included; that date has now passed, so anyone who applied this year should check CAPS for their final status. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains each status you might see there.

Studying Public Health at ABSU

Public Health is in ABSU’s College of Medicine and Health Sciences, and NUC’s results publication files it under Allied Health Sciences with Nursing Science, Optometry and Medical Laboratory Science. Teaching is at the main campus in Uturu, Isuikwuato Local Government Area. ABSU’s course outline was not online in any source I reached, so the list below describes a Nigerian B.Sc in Public Health in general.

What you study

  • Basic sciences: biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics and general studies in the first year, then anatomy and physiology.
  • Epidemiology and biostatistics: how diseases spread in a population and how to measure it.
  • Environmental and occupational health: water, sanitation, waste and workplace safety.
  • Health promotion: designing and running health education and behaviour change programmes.
  • Health policy and management: how health services are planned, paid for and run in Nigeria.
  • Field work and project: community postings and a final year research project.

Duration, accreditation and registration

Public Health degrees in Nigeria usually run for four or five years, and ABSU’s duration is not confirmed in the sources I reached. NUC’s accreditation results, 1990 to 2025 list ABSU Public Health as Full, with the recorded period ending in 2026, so a reaccreditation visit is due. Ask ABSU for the latest NUC result at clearance.

Unlike Nursing or Medical Laboratory Science, a general Public Health degree does not lead to registration with one specific council. I did not find any council approval for ABSU’s programme. If you want a licensed role such as environmental health officer, check what that council requires before you choose this course.

Careers

  • Programme officer roles with NGOs, donor projects and international health agencies
  • Disease surveillance and health records work with state health ministries and primary health care boards
  • Health education and community health promotion
  • Monitoring and evaluation of health projects
  • Postgraduate study, especially an MPH, epidemiology or health economics

For UTME revision, use our JAMB Biology syllabus and JAMB Chemistry syllabus for 2027.

Mistakes that cost Public Health applicants an ABSU place

  • Taking Mathematics instead of Physics in the UTME: the brochure line is Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
  • Missing a science credit at O’level: all five listed credits are required.
  • Treating 150 as admission: it only makes you eligible to screen.
  • Skipping ABSU’s screening registration: ABSU says it will not consider you.
  • Ignoring CAPS: an offer you do not accept in time can lapse.

Sources and updates

The 150 minimum, the first or second choice rule, the ₦2,000 fee, the portals, the uploads and the warning about unregistered candidates come from ABSU’s 2026/2027 screening notice signed by the Registrar, Dr Acho Elendu, as reprinted by Osilight (9 June 2026) and Myschool (8 June 2026); I could not open the original. The national minimum of 150, the 31 October 2026 deadline for public universities and the four-week acceptance window come from the News Agency of Nigeria (11 May 2026). The course appears on Myschool’s reprint of JAMB’s ABSU course list. UTME, O’level and Direct Entry rules are from JAMB’s brochure entry for Public Health as reprinted by Myschool, which has no ABSU remark. The accreditation status comes from NUC’s accreditation results, 1990 to 2025 publication. Course content and careers describe Nigerian Public Health degrees in general. ABSU has not published a departmental cut-off, an aggregate formula, a screening closing date or fees in any source I reached, and the target scores are my advice. Checked on 29 October 2026; this page will be updated when ABSU releases its 2027/2028 screening notice.
