The ABSU cut off mark for Biology Education is 150 in the UTME. Abia State University (ABSU) used 150 as the minimum for every regular degree course in its 2026/2027 screening notice, for candidates who chose ABSU as first or second choice, and it published no separate figure for Biology Education. A score of 150 makes you eligible for screening; admission is then by merit.
2027/2028 update: ABSU cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.
Accreditation needs more attention than the cut-off for this course: NUC’s published record lists denied as the latest result for ABSU’s Biology Education programme. I set out what that record shows, what to ask before you accept an offer, and the alternatives at ABSU, along with the JAMB subjects, Direct Entry rules and the screening steps.

ABSU Biology Education cut-off mark history
| Session | Figure | What it means | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026/2027 | 150 | Lowest UTME score ABSU accepted for online screening in any regular degree course (ABSU as first or second choice) | ABSU notice, reprinted 8 to 9 June 2026 |
| 2026 (national) | 150 | JAMB minimum for every Nigerian university | JAMB 2026 policy meeting, 11 May 2026 |
| 2025/2026 | Not confirmed | I could not open an ABSU notice for that session | Unverified |
| Course figure | None published | Blog figures for ABSU departments cite no ABSU document | Unofficial |
ABSU’s notice gave one figure for all courses. The effective cut-off for Biology Education is the score of the last candidate admitted each year, and ABSU does not publish it.
One point confuses many education candidates in 2026. JAMB’s 2026 policy meeting exempted NCE programmes at colleges of education from the UTME. That rule is about the three-year NCE certificate. ABSU’s education courses are university degree programmes, and the 2026/2027 screening notice applied the same 150 UTME minimum to every regular degree course, so you still need to sit the UTME to enter at 100 level.
Biology Education at ABSU and NUC accreditation
NUC’s publication of accreditation results from 1990 to 2025 lists ABSU “Education Biology” with this sequence of results: interim, full, interim, full, denied. No maturity date follows the last entry. The extracted text does not tie each result to a year, so I read the last one as the latest. Here is how the course compares with other ABSU education programmes in the same publication:
| ABSU programme (NUC listing) | Latest result listed | Maturity date |
|---|---|---|
| Education Biology | Denied | None |
| Education Chemistry | Denied | None |
| Education Physics | Denied | None |
| Education Mathematics | Denied | None |
| Integrated Science | Denied | None |
| Agricultural Science Education | Full | 2026 |
| Business Education | Full | 2027 |
| Social Studies | Full | 2029 |
Denied is the lowest NUC result. A programme with denied accreditation is expected to stop admitting new students until it passes a fresh NUC visit, and a degree from an unaccredited programme can cause trouble later with NYSC mobilisation and some employers. The course is still on ABSU’s JAMB list, and the NUC publication may not show a re-visit that happened after the denial. Ask before you pay acceptance fees.
What to ask ABSU before you accept
- Current status: ask the Department of Science Education or the Admissions Office whether Biology Education now holds interim or full NUC accreditation, and when the last NUC visit took place.
- Admission this session: ask whether ABSU is admitting into Biology Education for the current session, and check that any offer appears on JAMB CAPS under Education and Biology.
- Plan B: ask whether you could transfer to a related course if the programme is suspended after you enrol.
Safe target score for Biology Education at ABSU (my advice)
Science education courses usually attract fewer applicants than Biology-based science degrees, so the effective cut-off tends to sit near the minimum. This table is my reading, not an ABSU rule, and it assumes the course is admitting in your year.
| Your UTME score | My read for ABSU Biology Education |
|---|---|
| Below 150 | Not eligible for screening |
| 150 to 159 | Eligible; strong Biology and Chemistry credits will matter |
| 160 to 169 | A fair chance |
| 170 to 189 | Good, and enough to consider a Biology-based science degree too |
| 190 and above | Strong |
I would aim for 170 or more, partly because it keeps your options open. With 170 and the same subjects, Animal and Environmental Biology or Plant Science and Biotechnology at ABSU are realistic alternatives if the accreditation answer worries you.
JAMB subject combination and O’level for Biology Education at ABSU
| Requirement | What the JAMB brochure says |
|---|---|
| Course name on JAMB | Education and Biology (Faculty of Education) |
| UTME | Not shown in Myschool’s reprint; JAMB’s usual line is Biology and two of Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics |
| O’level | Five SSC credits in English Language, Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and one other subject |
| Direct Entry (general) | NCE or A-level passes in Biology and one other science subject |
| ABSU remark (Direct Entry) | ABSU (with BSU, IMSU and UNIABUJA) requires NCE not below merit |
| ABSU remarks (UTME and O’level) | None found |
Which UTME subjects?
Myschool’s reprint of the JAMB brochure has a UTME heading for this course with no text under it, so I could not confirm the line from that page. JAMB’s usual combination for Biology Education is Biology plus two of Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics. My pick is Use of English, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. It matches your O’level, works for the science courses in the first year, and still qualifies you for most Biology-based degrees at ABSU. Confirm the line on JAMB’s e-brochure when you register.
O’level
You need five credits in English Language, Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics plus one other subject. Physics or Agricultural Science is the sensible fifth. Check your Mathematics grade first, because a pass there ends the application.
Direct Entry
The general line accepts NCE or A-level passes in Biology and one other science subject. ABSU’s remark, shared with BSU, IMSU and UNIABUJA, says it requires an NCE not below merit, so an NCE with a pass grade will not do. The 2026/2027 notice also asks Direct Entry candidates for the basic five O’level credits. Confirm the entry level with ABSU before buying a Direct Entry form.
How ABSU screens Biology Education applicants
ABSU’s 2026/2027 notice was signed by the Registrar, Dr. Acho Elendu. I could not open the original on the ABSU website, so the details below come from two reprints that agree with each other: Osilight (posted 9 June 2026) and Myschool (8 June 2026).
| Detail | What the 2026/2027 notice said |
|---|---|
| Who could apply | Candidates who chose ABSU as first or second choice, or who changed to ABSU, and scored 150 or more in the UTME |
| Direct Entry | Basic five O’level credit passes under ABSU’s entry requirements |
| Where to register | Online at www.abiastateuniversity.edu.ng |
| What to upload | UTME result, O’level result and degree certificate where applicable, on the ABSU portal (www.portal.abiastateuniversity.edu.ng) and the JAMB portal |
| Fee | ₦2,000 by e-payment through the banks named in the notice, or by debit card |
| Missing the screening | Candidates who do not register “will not be considered for admission” |
| Written test | Not mentioned; the notice describes online document screening |
| Closing date | Not stated in the reprints |
The bank names came out garbled in the reprint, so follow the payment options on the ABSU portal itself. Because the notice describes no written test, your UTME score and your O’level grades are what ABSU has in front of it when it ranks Biology Education applicants. Biology and Chemistry are the two O’level grades I would protect most.
Worked example for Biology Education candidates
ABSU has not published an aggregate formula, and the 2026/2027 notice describes document screening without a test. To show how your O’level can change your position, I use an illustrative method common at Nigerian universities: UTME score divided by 8 (up to 50 points) plus O’level points for five relevant subjects, where A1 = 10, B2 = 9, B3 = 8, C4 = 7, C5 = 6 and C6 = 5 (up to 50 points). This is my example, not ABSU’s formula.
- Oluchi scored 157 with B3 in English, B3 in Mathematics, A1 in Biology, B2 in Chemistry and B3 in Physics. UTME points: 157 ÷ 8 = 19.62. O’level points: 8 + 8 + 10 + 9 + 8 = 43. Illustrative total: 62.62.
- Tochukwu scored 178 with C6 in English, C6 in Mathematics, C5 in Biology, C6 in Chemistry and C6 in Physics. UTME points: 178 ÷ 8 = 22.25. O’level points: 5 + 5 + 6 + 5 + 5 = 26. Illustrative total: 48.25.
- The result: Oluchi leads by 14.37 points with 21 fewer UTME marks. When most applicants sit between 150 and 180, O’level grades usually decide the order.
How to apply for Education and Biology at ABSU, step by step
- Get a JAMB profile code: text NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the SIM linked to that NIN. The code arrives by SMS and you take it to a CBT centre to register.
- Register the UTME with the right subjects: pick Education and Biology at Abia State University with Use of English, Biology, Chemistry and Physics (confirm the line on the e-brochure). ABSU screened first and second choice candidates in 2026/2027, but first choice is still the cleaner position. To move ABSU up later, use a JAMB change of institution.
- Upload your O’level to CAPS: do it at an accredited JAMB CBT centre once your result is out. Make sure Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics show clearly.
- Register for ABSU screening: when the notice is out, go to www.abiastateuniversity.edu.ng, pay the screening fee (₦2,000 in 2026/2027) and upload your UTME result and O’level on the ABSU portal.
- Keep your receipts: save the payment receipt and a printout of the completed screening form. You may need both at clearance.
- Check your status: watch the ABSU portal and your JAMB CAPS page. An ABSU offer shows on CAPS first.
- Accept on CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, choose Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS, and accept. JAMB gives four weeks. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains each status.
- Pay acceptance and clear: ABSU’s acceptance and school fees were not in any source I reached. Pay only the amount on your ABSU portal invoice.
Warning
Every genuine ABSU offer appears on JAMB CAPS, and JAMB said in May 2026 that admission outside CAPS is illegal. Anyone who asks for money to “process” a Biology Education place is not acting for ABSU. Pay only through the ABSU portal.
JAMB kept 31 October 2026 as the date public universities such as ABSU should finish 2026/2027 admissions (Nairametrics, 28 September 2026). If you applied this year, the window runs until then, so check CAPS rather than waiting for a printed list.
Biology Education at ABSU: the programme
Biology Education is run by ABSU’s College of Education on the main campus at Uturu, Isuikwuato LGA. ABSU began in 1981 as Imo State University and took its present name after Abia State was created in 1991.
What you study
ABSU has not published a course outline that I could reach. Biology Education degrees in Nigeria combine biology courses with teacher training:
- Biology content: cell biology, genetics, ecology, botany, zoology, microbiology, physiology and evolution.
- Supporting sciences: first-year chemistry, physics and mathematics.
- Education courses: educational psychology, curriculum studies, methods of teaching biology, measurement and evaluation.
- Practical work: laboratory and field work, and teaching practice in secondary schools.
- Final year: a research project in science education.
Degree and duration
The degree title for this course at ABSU (usually B.Sc (Ed) Biology in Nigerian universities) was not on any page I reached, and four years is the usual length for UTME entrants. The accreditation position is covered above.
Careers
- Biology teacher in secondary schools, after registration with the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN).
- Laboratory assistant or science resource officer in schools.
- Health education and environmental education roles with NGOs.
- Lecturer in colleges of education after a master’s degree.

Mistakes that cost Biology Education applicants
- Accepting without asking about accreditation: NUC’s latest listed result is denied.
- Searching JAMB for “Biology Education”: the course is listed as Education and Biology.
- No credit in Mathematics or Chemistry: both are in the O’level line.
- Applying by Direct Entry with an NCE pass: ABSU wants an NCE not below merit.
- Not registering for screening: the notice says such candidates will not be considered.
- Missing the CAPS window: JAMB gives four weeks to accept.
ABSU Biology Education: frequently asked questions
Is Biology Education in ABSU accredited? NUC’s accreditation results publication lists denied as the latest result for ABSU Education Biology, with no maturity date. Ask the department for the current status before you accept an offer.
What is the cut-off mark for Biology Education in ABSU? ABSU’s minimum for every course in 2026/2027 was 150 in the UTME, and it published no separate figure for Biology Education. I would aim for 170.
What subjects do I need for Biology Education in ABSU? At O’level, credits in English, Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and one other subject. For the UTME, JAMB’s usual line is Biology plus two of Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics; confirm it on the e-brochure.
Can I use NCE for Biology Education Direct Entry at ABSU? Yes, if it is not below merit. The JAMB brochure’s ABSU remark rules out NCE pass grades.
Sources and updates
The 150 minimum, the first and second choice rule, the Direct Entry line, the ₦2,000 fee, the registration and upload steps and the warning about candidates who fail to register come from ABSU’s 2026/2027 screening notice signed by the Registrar, Dr. Acho Elendu, as reprinted by Osilight (9 June 2026) and Myschool (8 June 2026); I could not open the original on the ABSU website. The national minimum of 150, the four-week CAPS window and the warning on admissions outside CAPS come from the News Agency of Nigeria (11 May 2026), and the 31 October 2026 deadline for public universities from Nairametrics (28 September 2026). The UTME, O’level and Direct Entry rules come from Myschool’s reprint of the JAMB brochure entry for Education and Biology, which ABSU’s JAMB course list links to. The accreditation history comes from NUC’s accreditation results, 1990 to 2025 publication. That Myschool page shows no UTME line, so the UTME combination here is JAMB’s usual one and needs checking on the e-brochure. The note on NCE programmes comes from JAMB’s 2026 policy meeting as reported in May 2026. Campus and history details come from Wikipedia. ABSU’s fees, the degree title, duration and any NUC result after the denial were not in any source I reached. The safe target table and the worked example are my own advice and illustration. Checked on 29 October 2026; this page will be updated if ABSU publishes a departmental cut-off or new requirements.
