MAU Cut-Off Mark for Medicine and Surgery 2027/2028: Requirements

MAU Yola (formerly MAUTECH) set 160 as its minimum UTME score for screening and has published no separate Medicine cut-off. Here is a safe target, the subjects, the aptitude test and the CAPS steps.

The MAU cut off mark for Medicine and Surgery that you can rely on is 160 in the UTME. That is the minimum Modibbo Adama University, Yola (MAU, formerly MAUTECH) set for every candidate who wanted to register for its 2026/2027 screening with MAU as first choice. MAU has not published a separate, higher cut-off for Medicine. JAMB’s national floor for universities is 150.

2027/2028 update: MAU cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from MAU’s latest screening notice (2026/2027), as reprinted by Myschool. If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.

In practice, 160 only gets you into the screening pool. Medicine is MAU’s most competitive course, and in 2026 its applicants also sat an aptitude test. Below you will find the official figures, a safe target score (my advice), the exact subjects, how the screening and test work, a worked example, the CAPS steps, and what is known about accreditation and the teaching hospital in Yola.

MAU kept the same 160 minimum for two sessions, and it applied to every course, Medicine included. No published source gives the score of the last candidate admitted into Medicine at MAU. Blog pages that print a “Medicine cut-off” for MAUTECH do not cite an MAU document, so I would not plan around them.

Safe target score for Medicine and Surgery at MAU (my advice)

This section is my judgement as an admissions adviser. MAU has not published a departmental cut-off for Medicine and Surgery, so none of these bands is an MAU rule.

Your UTME scoreMy read for MAU Medicine and Surgery
Below 160Not eligible to register for MAU screening
160 to 219Eligible, but Medicine is very unlikely; think about a related course
220 to 249Possible only with a strong aptitude test score and good O’level grades
250 to 269Competitive
270 and aboveStrong. This is where I would aim.

For the 2027 UTME I would aim for at least 250, ideally 270, with A1 to B3 in English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. These bands reflect how Medicine behaves at federal universities generally: places are few and many applicants score far above the floor. They are advice, not MAU figures.

Catchment and state of origin

MAU is a federal university. Federal universities generally admit under a national guideline that splits places between merit, catchment area and educationally less developed states, and Adamawa and the neighbouring north eastern states fall in the less developed group. MAU itself has not published a catchment list or the split it used for 2026/2027, so treat your state of origin as a possible help, never as a guarantee. The indigene form on MAU’s screening form is where your state of origin is recorded.

UTME subject combination and O’level for MAU Medicine and Surgery

RequirementMedicine and Surgery at MAU
UTME subjectsUse of English, Physics, Chemistry, Biology
O’levelFive credits: English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology
Exams acceptedWAEC, NECO, NABTEB (MAU’s form takes your best five subjects)
SittingsMAU’s form allows at most two sittings; one sitting is safer for Medicine
MAU-specific remark on the brochureNone listed for MAUTECH, so the general rule applies
Aptitude testYes in 2026/2027 for MBBS applicants (blog report)

The JAMB brochure entry for Medicine and Surgery lists special waivers for several universities, but none for MAUTECH. That means MAU follows the general rule: Physics, Chemistry and Biology in the UTME, plus five O’level credits that include English and Mathematics. I could not open MAU’s own brochure remark on the JAMB site, so check it on your e-Facility profile before you register.

The most common error with this course is swapping Physics for Mathematics in the UTME. Mathematics is compulsory at O’level only. In the UTME, the three subjects after English are Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

Direct Entry into Medicine and Surgery

The general brochure rule for Direct Entry into Medicine is A level passes in Physics, Chemistry and Biology or Zoology, on top of the O’level requirements. A relevant first degree is also listed as a route. MAU screens DE candidates in the same online exercise. Ask the admissions office whether MAU takes DE students into Medicine at all before you buy a form, because many medical schools admit very few or none.

How MAU screening works for Medicine and Surgery

MAU’s screening is mainly an online registration and document check. For Medicine, a blog report says MAU also held a Post-UTME aptitude test for MBBS and Law applicants on Thursday 10 September 2026 at 8:30 a.m. The report did not give the venue, format or pass mark, and we could not confirm it on mau.edu.ng.

Worked example for a Medicine and Surgery candidate

MAU has not published how it combines your UTME score, the aptitude test and O’level grades. The figures below use the 50:50 method many Nigerian universities use, only to show how far apart two candidates can be. It is illustrative, not MAU’s formula.

  1. Aisha scored 262 in the UTME: 262 divided by 8 = 32.75 out of 50.
  2. Her test score is 70%: 70 divided by 2 = 35 out of 50.
  3. Illustrative aggregate: 32.75 plus 35 = 67.75 out of 100.
  4. Suleiman scored 205 and 60% in the test: 25.63 plus 30 = 55.63. He cleared 160 easily but sits 12 points behind Aisha on this method.

Every Medicine applicant has already cleared 160, so what separates you is how far above it you are and how well you do on test day. If MAU offers Suleiman a different course on CAPS through a transfer, he should weigh it seriously.

How to apply for Medicine and Surgery at MAU, step by step

  1. Get your JAMB profile code: send NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the phone line linked to your NIN.
  2. Register the UTME correctly: pick Medicine and Surgery with English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology, and put Modibbo Adama University, Yola as your first choice. If you chose another school, do a JAMB change of institution before MAU’s screening opens.
  3. Upload your O’level to JAMB: go to a JAMB accredited centre and have your WAEC, NECO or NABTEB result uploaded so it shows on CAPS. MAU’s notice also asks you to upload it on the JAMB portal.
  4. Register for MAU screening: when the notice comes out, open the admissions portal from mau.edu.ng, verify your JAMB registration number, create an account and confirm your email.
  5. Pay and fill the form: generate a Remita RRR and pay (₦2,000 in 2025), then upload a passport photo (150 kb or less) and signature, enter your best five O’level subjects with the result checker details, add next of kin, and upload your O’level result, indigene form and birth certificate.
  6. Print your slip: print the acknowledgement slip and keep it for clearance.
  7. Sit the aptitude test: in 2026 MBBS applicants were called for a test after the online registration. Watch MAU’s portal and official social media pages for the date and venue.
  8. Accept on CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, choose Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS. Accept or reject the offer. JAMB gives four weeks to accept.
  9. Pay acceptance and clear: MAU has not published its acceptance fee in any source we reached, so pay only through the invoice on the MAU portal after your CAPS offer shows.

Warning

Medicine attracts people who sell “admission slots” and “special forms”. Every genuine MAU offer appears on JAMB CAPS, and MAU payments go through the Remita invoice generated on its own portal. Do not pay anyone for a Medicine place.

Myschool reported around 3 October 2026 that MAU’s 2026/2027 admission list was out on JAMB CAPS. JAMB set 31 October 2026 as the 2026/2027 deadline for public universities to finish admissions; that date has now passed. If you applied this year, your CAPS page shows the final result. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains each status.

Studying Medicine and Surgery at MAU

Medicine and Surgery sits in MAU’s medical college; Wikipedia names it the College of Medical Sciences, but we have not seen an MAU page that confirms the structure, so treat the name loosely. The degree is the MBBS, which runs for six years in Nigeria. MAU’s main campus is at Girei, near Yola, in Adamawa State.

Accreditation and the teaching hospital

  • A blog report of 24 April 2026 says the National Universities Commission accredited MAU’s medicine programme, quoting the university’s Registrar. It does not say whether the status is full or interim, and we did not find the NUC report itself.
  • The Federal Medical Centre, Yola, was approved for upgrade to Modibbo Adama University Teaching Hospital (Vanguard reported the approval on 17 May 2022; Wikipedia dates the upgrade to December 2024).
  • An undated MDCN list of hospitals approved for housemanship includes Modibbo Adama University Teaching Hospital, Yola, with a quota of 38 house officers. That quota is for doctors after graduation, not the number of students MAU can admit.
  • NUC’s Accreditation Results 1990 to 2025, published in September 2026, have no Medicine row for MAU; its MAU section has no medicine or allied health heading at all. The blog report of April 2026 would fall after that list closed, so the two do not contradict each other, but neither gives you a grade.
  • We did not find MAU’s MDCN admission quota for the MBBS. Ask the college before you accept.

What you study

  • First year: basic sciences, usually physics, chemistry and biology at university level.
  • Pre-clinical years: anatomy, physiology and biochemistry, followed by professional examinations.
  • Clinical years: pathology, pharmacology, community medicine, then surgery, internal medicine, paediatrics, and obstetrics and gynaecology on the wards of the teaching hospital.
  • After graduation: a year of housemanship, then NYSC, then full MDCN registration and residency or other paths.

Doctors from the programme can work in hospitals, public health, research, the military, or train further as specialists.

For UTME revision, start with our JAMB Biology syllabus and JAMB Chemistry syllabus.

Mistakes that cost Medicine and Surgery applicants an MAU place

  • Treating 160 as an admission score: it is the minimum to register for screening.
  • Dropping Physics in the UTME: Medicine needs Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
  • Missing the aptitude test: in 2026 MBBS applicants had a separate test date after registration.
  • O’level not uploaded to JAMB: MAU asks for it on the JAMB portal as well as on its own form.
  • Two weak sittings: the form allows two, but strong single-sitting results read better for Medicine.
  • Ignoring CAPS: an offer you do not accept within the window can lapse.

If you are trying again in 2027, read when JAMB 2027 registration starts and JAMB change of institution.

MAU cut off mark for Medicine and Surgery: frequently asked questions

Is 200 enough for Medicine at MAU? 200 clears MAU’s 160 minimum, so you could register for screening, but it is unlikely to win a Medicine place. I would aim for 250 or more.

Does MAU write Post-UTME for Medicine? Yes, for 2026/2027 a blog report says MBBS applicants sat an aptitude test on 10 September 2026, after the online registration. The same report names Law applicants too; it mentions no test for other courses.

Is MAU Medicine accredited by NUC? A blog report from April 2026 says NUC accredited the programme, but it does not give the grade, and NUC’s 1990 to 2025 results list has no MAU Medicine row. Confirm the status with MAU before accepting.

What subjects do I need for MAU Medicine in JAMB? Use of English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. The JAMB brochure lists no MAU exception for Medicine.

Sources and updates

The 160 minimum and the 20 July to 31 August 2026 screening window come from Myschool’s reprint of MAU’s 2026/2027 screening notice (15 July 2026); we could not open the original on mau.edu.ng, so treat it as a reprint. The 2025/2026 figures, the ₦2,000 fee, the portal and the form steps come from Studentship’s reprint of MAU’s signed 2025/2026 notice. The UTME, O’level and Direct Entry rules for Medicine and Surgery are from the JAMB brochure entry reprinted on Myschool, which lists no exception for MAUTECH. The national minimum of 150, the 31 October 2026 deadline for public universities and the four-week acceptance window come from the News Agency of Nigeria (11 May 2026). The admission list date is from Myschool (about 3 October 2026). The course list check uses Myschool’s list of JAMB courses for MAUTECH. NUC accreditation results are from the NUC’s Accreditation Results 1990 to 2025 (published September 2026), where MAU is listed under its old name. The NUC accreditation report is from abstechconnect (24 April 2026) and the aptitude test date is from abstechconnect (24 August 2026); both are blog reports we could not confirm on an MAU or NUC page. The teaching hospital quota is from the MDCN list of hospitals approved for housemanship. The teaching hospital upgrade is from Wikipedia’s Federal Medical Centre, Yola article, which cites Vanguard (17 May 2022). Checked on 3 November 2026. This page will be updated if MAU publishes a departmental cut-off or a 2027/2028 notice.
