The MAU cut off mark for Medical Laboratory Science is 160 in the UTME, the general minimum Modibbo Adama University, Yola (MAU, formerly MAUTECH) set for its 2026/2027 screening. MAU has not published a separate figure for the course. JAMB’s national floor for universities is 150.
2027/2028 update: MAU cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from MAU’s latest screening notice (2026/2027), as reprinted by Myschool. If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.
There is one thing to settle before the score. Medical Laboratory Science is on the JAMB brochure list of courses for MAUTECH, but it is missing from MAU’s course list on Studentship (2024) and from Wikipedia’s list of MAU departments, and we found no Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN) approval for MAU. So confirm that MAU is admitting into it before you register. Below are the figures, a safe target score (my advice), the subjects, the screening steps and a worked example.

The only MAU figures in print are the university-wide 160 minimums for 2025/2026 and 2026/2027. No source gives a Medical Laboratory Science merit cut-off for MAU.
Safe target score for Medical Laboratory Science at MAU (my advice)
This section is my judgement as an admissions adviser. MAU has not published a departmental cut-off for Medical Laboratory Science, so none of these bands is an MAU rule.
| Your UTME score | My read for MAU Medical Laboratory Science |
|---|---|
| Below 160 | Not eligible to register for MAU screening |
| 160 to 189 | Eligible; a place depends on how many apply |
| 190 to 219 | Reasonable |
| 220 and above | Strong. This is where I would aim. |
For the 2027 UTME I would aim for at least 200, ideally 220. Medical Laboratory Science is one of the health courses many students choose after missing Medicine, so it tends to draw strong scores. Treat these bands as my advice.
Catchment and state of origin
MAU is a federal university. Federal universities generally admit under a national guideline that splits places between merit, catchment area and educationally less developed states, and Adamawa and the neighbouring north eastern states fall in the less developed group. MAU itself has not published a catchment list or the split it used for 2026/2027, so treat your state of origin as a possible help, never as a guarantee. The indigene form on MAU’s screening form is where your state of origin is recorded.
UTME subject combination and O’level for MAU Medical Laboratory Science
| Requirement | Medical Laboratory Science at MAU |
|---|---|
| UTME subjects | Use of English, Physics, Chemistry, Biology (JAMB’s usual combination; confirm on the e-brochure) |
| O’level | Five credits: English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology (usual requirement) |
| Exams accepted | WAEC, NECO, NABTEB |
| Sittings | At most two on MAU’s form |
| MAU brochure remark | Could not be read; the brochure page failed to load on two tries |
Myschool’s copy of the JAMB brochure page for Medical Laboratory Science did not load when we checked, so I cannot quote MAU’s exact remark. The subjects above are the usual ones Nigerian universities ask for. Log in to your JAMB e-Facility profile, open the brochure for Modibbo Adama University, and read the line for this course before you register.
If MAU is not admitting into the course in 2027, a first choice of Medical Laboratory Science there could leave you with nothing. That is why I suggest checking with the admissions office first, then registering.
Direct Entry into Medical Laboratory Science
Medical Laboratory Science programmes in Nigeria usually take Direct Entry candidates with A level or IJMB passes in Chemistry, Biology and Physics, and sometimes a relevant diploma. MAU has not published its DE rule for this course in any source we reached. Ask before you pay.
How MAU screening works for Medical Laboratory Science
MAU’s 2026/2027 screening for this course was an online registration and document check. No test for Medical Laboratory Science was mentioned in the reprints; the only test reported was for MBBS and Law.
| Detail | What MAU’s notices say |

Worked example for a Medical Laboratory Science candidate
MAU has not published an aggregate formula, and with no test for this course there is no Post-UTME score to add. What you can work out is the distance between your score, the 160 minimum and a safe target.
- Ngozi scored 214: 214 minus 160 = 54 above MAU’s minimum.
- Against my safe target: 220 minus 214 = 6 below the score I would call strong.
- O’level: credits in English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology in one sitting, uploaded to JAMB.
- My advice: she is in a good position, provided MAU confirms it is admitting into the course.
Sani scored 171 with C6 in Physics. He clears 160 by 11 marks, but his total is low for a health course and his Physics grade is weak. He should look at the related science courses below as a second plan.
How to apply for Medical Laboratory Science at MAU, step by step
- Get your JAMB profile code: send NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the phone line linked to your NIN.
- Register the UTME correctly: pick Medical Laboratory Science with English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology, and put Modibbo Adama University, Yola as your first choice. If you chose another school, do a JAMB change of institution before MAU’s screening opens.
- Upload your O’level to JAMB: go to a JAMB accredited centre and have your WAEC, NECO or NABTEB result uploaded so it shows on CAPS. MAU’s notice also asks you to upload it on the JAMB portal.
- Register for MAU screening: when the notice comes out, open the admissions portal from mau.edu.ng, verify your JAMB registration number, create an account and confirm your email.
- Pay and fill the form: generate a Remita RRR and pay (₦2,000 in 2025), then upload a passport photo (150 kb or less) and signature, enter your best five O’level subjects with the result checker details, add next of kin, and upload your O’level result, indigene form and birth certificate.
- Print your slip: print the acknowledgement slip and keep it for clearance.
- Confirm the course is admitting: before paying, ask MAU’s admissions office whether Medical Laboratory Science is taking 100 level students this session.
- Accept on CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, choose Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS. Accept or reject the offer. JAMB gives four weeks to accept.
- Pay acceptance and clear: MAU has not published its acceptance fee in any source we reached, so pay only through the invoice on the MAU portal after your CAPS offer shows.
Check first
A course can appear on JAMB’s list for a university without the department admitting that year. For Medical Laboratory Science at MAU, confirm with the university and check that the course shows on your CAPS page before paying any MAU fee.
Myschool reported around 3 October 2026 that MAU’s 2026/2027 admission list was out on JAMB CAPS. JAMB set 31 October 2026 as the 2026/2027 deadline for public universities to finish admissions; that date has now passed. If you applied this year, your CAPS page shows the final result. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains each status.
Studying Medical Laboratory Science at MAU
JAMB lists Medical Laboratory Science among MAU’s health courses. MAU’s health programmes are reported to sit in a medical college (Wikipedia calls it the College of Medical Sciences), but we found no MAU page describing a Medical Laboratory Science department, so its home inside MAU is not confirmed.
Accreditation
Medical Laboratory Science degrees need approval from both the NUC and the MLSCN, whose induction lets graduates practise. NUC’s Accreditation Results 1990 to 2025, published in September 2026, have no Medical Laboratory Science row for MAU, and we found no MLSCN approval either. I would not accept an offer for this course until MAU tells you, in writing or on its website, that the programme is approved.
What you study
- Early years: chemistry, biology, physics, anatomy, physiology and biochemistry.
- Core laboratory subjects: medical microbiology, chemical pathology (clinical chemistry), haematology and blood transfusion science, histopathology and cytology, and immunology.
- Final stage: a project and an internship in an approved laboratory.
- Length: the B.MLS normally runs for five years in Nigeria.
Graduates work in hospital and private laboratories, public health laboratories, blood banks, research institutes and diagnostic companies.

Mistakes that cost Medical Laboratory Science applicants an MAU place
- Not checking that the course is admitting: it is on JAMB’s list but missing from MAU’s own department lists.
- Treating 160 as an admission score: it is only the screening minimum.
- Dropping Physics: the usual UTME combination has Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
- O’level not uploaded to JAMB: MAU asks for it there too.
- Ignoring a transfer offer on CAPS: if MAU offers a related science course, decide before the window closes.
If you are trying again in 2027, read when JAMB 2027 registration starts and JAMB change of institution.

Sources and updates
The 160 minimum and the 20 July to 31 August 2026 screening window come from Myschool’s reprint of MAU’s 2026/2027 screening notice (15 July 2026); we could not open the original on mau.edu.ng, so treat it as a reprint. The 2025/2026 figures, the ₦2,000 fee, the portal and the form steps come from Studentship’s reprint of MAU’s signed 2025/2026 notice. The UTME, O’level and Direct Entry rules for Medical Laboratory Science are from the JAMB brochure entry reprinted on Myschool, which failed to load for us twice, so the subjects shown are the usual ones and not an MAU remark. The national minimum of 150, the 31 October 2026 deadline for public universities and the four-week acceptance window come from the News Agency of Nigeria (11 May 2026). The admission list date is from Myschool (about 3 October 2026). The course list check uses Myschool’s list of JAMB courses for MAUTECH. NUC accreditation results are from the NUC’s Accreditation Results 1990 to 2025 (published September 2026), where MAU is listed under its old name. The department lists we compared are Studentship’s MAUTECH course list (updated 8 March 2024) and Wikipedia’s article on the university. Checked on 3 November 2026. This page will be updated if MAU publishes a departmental cut-off or a 2027/2028 notice.
