The Kent State online MSN is ranked No. 62 in the U.S. News 2026 Best Online Master’s in Nursing Programs. Kent State University in Ohio runs one of the widest online nursing master’s menus in that list: nurse practitioner tracks in family, adult-gerontology primary care and acute care, psychiatric mental health and women’s health, plus a clinical nurse specialist track, Nurse Educator and Nursing Administration and Health Systems Leadership. Depending on the track, the MSN is 30 to 47 credits with 300 to 600 clinical hours.
Can a nurse living in Nigeria, Kenya or elsewhere abroad enrol? No, in practice. Kent State needs an active, unrestricted RN licence in the state where you do your clinicals, admits online students only from an approved list of U.S. states, and an online degree does not qualify for an F-1 visa. Foreign-educated nurses already in the U.S. have one advantage here: Kent State reviews nursing degrees from outside the U.S. through a portfolio. Tuition is $631 per credit for Ohio residents and $641 for others, and the Kent State online MSN deadline for summer and fall 2027 is 1 March 2027. I checked these details on Kent State’s pages on 29 October 2026.
Kent State online MSN ranking
Kent State Today reported on 28 January 2026 that the university’s online master’s in nursing ranks No. 62 nationally in the U.S. News 2026 Best Online Programs, released the day before. That places it outside the top 40, below Ohio rivals such as Ohio State (No. 1) and the University of Cincinnati (No. 19).
Two things work in Kent State’s favour despite the rank: non-Ohio residents pay far less than at many higher-ranked schools, and the track list is longer than most. What matters more for our readers is whether you can enrol at all, which comes down to your licence and the state you live in.
Kent State online MSN concentrations
| Concentration | Delivery (2026-27 catalog) | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Family Nurse Practitioner | Mostly online | Open |
| Adult Gerontology Primary Care NP | Mostly online | Open |
| Adult Gerontology Acute Care NP | Mostly online | Open |
| Psychiatric Mental Health NP | Fully online | Open |
| Women’s Health NP | Fully online | Open |
| Adult Gerontology Clinical Nurse Specialist | Fully online | Open |
| Nurse Educator | Fully online | Open |
| Nursing Administration and Health Systems Leadership | Fully online | Open |
| Pediatric Primary Care NP | Mostly online | Not accepting applications |
- Credits: 30 to 47 in total, including four core courses, depending on the concentration.
- Clinical hours: 300 to 600, depending on the concentration.
- Length: as few as two years full time (four to five semesters), usually three to four years part time, with a six-year maximum.
- Thesis: optional.
- Other routes: a dual MBA/MSN (58 credits), post-master’s certificates and a post-MSN DNP. Nursing informatics is not an MSN concentration; Kent State points students to a separate Health Informatics master’s.
There is one inconsistency to note. Kent State Online describes the MSN as 100% online, while the 2026-27 catalog labels the FNP, both adult-gerontology NP tracks and the pediatric NP as “mostly online”. Ask the College of Nursing what in-person sessions those tracks need before you plan travel.
Can international nurses apply to the Kent State online MSN?
Kent State does not write a rule for applicants living abroad, but three of its published rules settle the question for most readers.
| Your situation | Can you enrol? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Living outside the U.S. with only a home-country licence | No, in practice | You need an active, unrestricted RN licence in the state where clinicals happen, and online students are accepted only from listed U.S. states |
| Wanting an F-1 student visa | No | U.S. F-1 rules count very few online courses toward full-time study, so an online MSN cannot support the visa |
| Foreign-educated RN with a U.S. licence, living in Ohio | Yes, if you meet the rest | Non-U.S. nursing bachelor’s degrees are reviewed through a portfolio |
| U.S. RN in another state | Only if your state is on the list for your track | See the approved-states table below |
Approved states for Kent State online nursing
Kent State’s College of Nursing publishes a state list for each online programme. When I checked, it read like this:
| Track | Approved states |
|---|---|
| PMHNP and Adult Gerontology CNS | Connecticut, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Kentucky, Maine, Mississippi, Montana, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia |
| Women’s Health NP | The 14 states above plus Minnesota, South Carolina and Texas |
| Nurse Educator | The 14 states above plus Arkansas, Kansas, Nebraska, New Hampshire, South Carolina, South Dakota and Texas |
| Nursing Administration and Health Systems Leadership | Same as Nurse Educator, except Texas |
| FNP, AGPCNP and AGACNP | Not shown on the approved-states page; ask the College before applying from outside Ohio |
Large nursing states such as New York, California, Georgia, Maryland and Michigan do not appear on any MSN list. Kent State also says that if you move to another state after admission, you must tell the Office of Student Services (330-672-7911) at once, because some state laws can stop the university offering your clinical courses there.
The route for a foreign-educated nurse
- Have your education evaluated for the state board you choose, usually through CGFNS (TruMerit). Pick a state on Kent State’s list, ideally Ohio.
- Meet the board’s English rule with IELTS, TOEFL or OET as that board specifies.
- Pass the NCLEX-RN and get an unrestricted licence in the state where you will do clinicals.
- Move to the U.S. on a work or immigrant visa, usually through an employer.
- Build experience in your chosen specialty, since Kent State gives priority to relevant experience.
- Apply with a portfolio showing your foreign nursing degree, licence and practice.
Kent State online MSN requirements
- A bachelor’s or graduate degree from an accredited RN programme. RNs with a non-nursing bachelor’s, or a nursing bachelor’s from outside the U.S., are reviewed by portfolio.
- A minimum GPA of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale in the 2026-27 catalog. Kent State Online’s admissions section says 3.0, so aim for 3.0. Lower GPAs may get conditional admission.
- An active, unrestricted RN licence in the state where you will complete clinical coursework.
- A CV or resume.
- A two-page, double-spaced, 500-word essay answering three prompts: your contribution to nursing, your readiness for graduate study and your experience with vulnerable populations.
- Three professional references from healthcare professionals, such as a supervisor or an advanced practice nurse.
- An interview video, if requested.
- An undergraduate statistics course with a C or better, listed in Kent State Online’s admissions section.
Admission is competitive. Kent State lists priority factors including strong references, experience in your area of interest, national certification, professional membership, community service, quality improvement or research work, and experience with underserved groups. No minimum years of experience are stated.
English tests
| Test | Minimum |
|---|---|
| TOEFL iBT | 83 |
| IELTS | 6.5 |
| PTE | 55 |
| Duolingo English Test | 110 |
Kent State says some applicants can be exempted and that lower scores may lead to conditional admission. Check the exemption rules on its international admissions site before booking a test.
Kent State online MSN deadlines
| Start term | Priority deadline |
|---|---|
| Summer 2027 | 1 March 2027 |
| Fall 2027 | 1 March 2027 |
| Spring 2028 | 1 October 2027 |
These are priority dates from the 2026-27 catalog; applications complete by then get the strongest consideration. The spring 2027 priority date, 1 October 2026, has passed. Kent State Online lists recent start dates in mid-January, mid-May and late August.
Kent State online MSN tuition
| Charge | Ohio resident | Non-Ohio resident |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition per credit | $631 | $641 |
| Distance learning fee per credit | $15 | $15 |
| Surcharge per credit, fully online part-time students | None listed | $10 |
| Approximate part-time total (Kent State figure) | $18,900 to $29,000 | $19,200 to $29,500 |
Program fees, a one-time admission fee, an academic partner onboarding fee and a practicum fee are charged at actual cost and are not itemised online. Kent State Online does not state the academic year for these rates. Even so, a $10 gap between Ohio and non-Ohio tuition is unusual and makes Kent State one of the cheaper options for nurses in its approved states.
Costs not covered by tuition
- The practicum, onboarding and programme fees listed above.
- Clinical compliance items: background checks, drug screens and immunisations.
- Travel for any in-person sessions in the “mostly online” NP tracks.
- Lost shifts during 300 to 600 clinical hours.
- Certification exam fees after graduation.
Scholarships and financial aid
U.S. federal loans and grants are for U.S. citizens and eligible non-citizens only. Kent State Online does not list scholarships aimed at international online nurses. Employer tuition support is the most common funding route for working RNs.
Accreditation and outcomes
The MSN is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). Kent State says the programme prepares students for Ohio licensure and certification, and anyone planning to practise elsewhere should check that state’s rules. I did not find published certification pass rates on the pages I checked.
How to write the Kent State essay
Kent State gives you three prompts and 500 words. That is about 160 words per prompt, so every sentence must earn its place.
- For your contribution to nursing, give one concrete change you made, with a result.
- For readiness, show you can manage graduate work alongside your job: your schedule, support and past study.
- For vulnerable populations, nurses trained in Africa or Asia often have the strongest stories. Use yours, with specifics.
- Name your concentration and connect it to the patients you have described.
For illustration only, a PMHNP applicant might open like this:
“On a general medical ward in Lagos, I nursed a young man admitted three times in one year for injuries no one connected to his depression. Now, on an inpatient unit in Ohio, I see the same pattern, and I want the training to treat the cause rather than the injury.”
Common mistakes foreign-educated nurses make
- Getting licensed in a state Kent State does not serve: check the approved list for your track before choosing where to take the NCLEX.
- Applying for the pediatric NP: it is not taking applications.
- Treating the GPA minimum as safe: two Kent State pages give 2.75 and 3.0, and admission is competitive.
- Skipping the portfolio detail: with a non-U.S. degree, your portfolio is your case. Include course content, clinical hours and licences.
- Moving mid-programme without telling the College: it can stop your clinical courses.
- Expecting a visa: online study does not lead to an F-1.
Who should apply
Kent State suits licensed RNs in Ohio or one of its approved states who want an NP, educator or leadership MSN at a price that barely changes for non-residents. It is also one of the few programmes that spells out a portfolio review for nurses with foreign nursing degrees, which helps internationally educated nurses already working in the U.S.
It does not suit nurses still living abroad, nurses in states missing from the list, or anyone hoping for a student visa. Start with U.S. licensure and come back to this guide once you have it.
