The UMKC online MSN, from the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Nursing and Health Studies, is ranked No. 22 in the U.S. News 2026 Best Online Master’s in Nursing Programs, up from No. 33 a year earlier. It offers seven nurse practitioner tracks and a nurse educator track, mostly online, with a few short residencies on campus during clinical courses.
Can you take it from outside the U.S.? Not in practice. The UMKC online MSN requirements include an unencumbered RN licence from Missouri or the state where you do clinicals, a personal interview and on-campus residencies, and an online programme does not support an F-1 student visa. UMKC charges one graduate nursing rate regardless of where you live: $951.25 per credit including fees for the FNP in 2026-27, or an estimated $43,757.50 for the whole degree. I checked everything below on UMKC’s own pages on 29 October 2026.
UMKC online MSN ranking
UMKC News reported on 26 January 2026 that its online graduate nursing programme was ranked No. 22 by U.S. News, eleven places higher than its No. 33 the year before. U.S. News released the 2026 Best Online Master’s in Nursing Programs the next day. UMKC says it is the top-ranked programme in Missouri and Kansas on the list and has been in the top 50 for 14 straight years. UNC Charlotte also reports No. 22, so the place appears to be shared. One line of metadata on UMKC’s page says No. 21, but the headline and article say No. 22.
UMKC online MSN tracks
| Track | Credits | Start terms |
|---|---|---|
| Family Nurse Practitioner | 47 | Spring or summer |
| Adult-Gerontology NP | 47 | Spring or summer |
| Psychiatric Mental Health NP | 47 | Spring or summer |
| Women’s Health NP | 47 | Spring or summer |
| Primary Care Pediatric NP | 47 | Summer |
| Acute Care Pediatric NP | 52 | Summer |
| Neonatal NP | 47 | Summer |
| Nurse Educator | 41 | Spring or fall |
These credit totals come from the School of Nursing MSN page. UMKC’s online programme page for the FNP gives 46 credits instead of 47, so confirm the figure for your intake. UMKC also offers a DNP and a PhD, and post-graduate certificates in FNP and PMHNP.
Length, residencies and clinicals
- Full-time students take three courses a semester and finish in two years. Part-time students take one or two courses and finish in three.
- Coursework runs on Canvas, with some live virtual sessions announced ahead of time.
- NP tracks include on-campus residencies during clinical courses. Most students attend three or four, each lasting two to three days.
- The nurse educator track needs little or no campus time. The MSN overview page says it has no residencies; the educator programme page mentions one visit of one to two days for the advanced health assessment skills course in late November or early December.
- Clinicals are precepted in community or outpatient settings once faculty approve them. UMKC does not print total clinical hours on the pages I checked.
Can international nurses apply to the UMKC online MSN?
UMKC accepts international applications and charges a $75 international fee. Its MSN pages say nothing specific about students living outside the U.S. In practice, the licence and residency rules decide it.
| Your situation | Can you enrol? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Living in Nigeria or elsewhere abroad, no U.S. licence | No, in practice | You need an unencumbered RN licence in Missouri or your clinical state, U.S. clinical sites and campus residencies |
| Wanting an F-1 student visa | No | U.S. rules count at most one online class per term toward an F-1 student’s full-time load, so a mostly online degree does not qualify |
| U.S. resident in Missouri or Kansas City area | Yes, if you meet the requirements | Close to campus for residencies |
| U.S. resident in another state | Usually | UMKC is in SARA and can enrol online students in 48 states plus DC; some states are not authorised or have conditions |
UMKC tells applicants to check its state authorisation page before applying because residents of non-authorised states cannot enrol. The MSN pages I read do not name those states.
The route for a foreign-educated nurse
- Have your nursing degree reviewed: U.S. state boards usually want a credentials review of foreign nursing education, often through CGFNS (TruMerit).
- Meet the English rules: UMKC’s graduate minimums are TOEFL iBT 79, IELTS 6.5 with no band below 6.0, PTE 53 or Duolingo 110. Your state board may ask for IELTS, TOEFL or OET at its own level.
- Pass the NCLEX-RN: the Missouri State Board of Nursing is an obvious choice if you plan to study at UMKC. NCSBN has international test centres.
- Move and work as an RN: most nurses come through employer-sponsored immigrant visas. Some tracks want one or two years of experience.
- Apply in two steps: the UMKC application first, then programme materials through NursingCAS.
Newly admitted international graduate students at UMKC must also register with the Applied Language Institute and may need to sit its English evaluation unless exempt.
UMKC online MSN requirements
The FNP and nurse educator pages list:
- A BSN from a programme recognised by CCNE or AACN.
- A GPA of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale, calculated on the last 60 hours of the BSN.
- A grade of B or better in graduate-level statistics and in a free-standing undergraduate health assessment course. You may take them in your first semester, but UMKC strongly recommends finishing them first.
- A current, unencumbered Missouri RN licence, or an unencumbered licence in the state where you will do clinicals.
- A personal interview.
- Three evaluation forms: your immediate supervisor, a BSN faculty member from your final year, and a professional reference such as a charge nurse, physician, NP or unit director. Co-workers, patients, friends and family are not accepted.
- A current RN resume and a personal statement of no more than one page.
- An application fee of $45, or $75 for international applicants.
Experience by track
| Track | Experience UMKC asks for |
|---|---|
| Neonatal NP | One year of recent full-time NICU experience, ideally Level III or IV; you can start pre-clinical courses while you gain it |
| Pediatric NP (primary or acute care) | One year of full-time pediatric RN experience in the past three years |
| Women’s Health NP | Two years recommended within the past three years |
| PMHNP and Nurse Educator | Two years of RN experience preferred |
UMKC online MSN deadlines
| Start | Deadline | Tracks |
|---|---|---|
| Summer 2027 (June) | 7 March 2027 | FNP; confirm other summer-start NP tracks on their pages |
| Fall 2027 (August) | 7 March 2027 | Nurse Educator |
| Spring 2028 (January) | 18 October 2027 | FNP and Nurse Educator; other spring-start tracks likely similar, so confirm |
The spring 2027 deadline was 18 October 2026 and has passed, so the spring date above is carried one year forward (based on this year’s date; confirm on the official page when the call opens).
UMKC online MSN tuition
UMKC publishes a per-credit graduate nursing rate with two fees added on.
| Charge per credit | FNP (2026-27) | Nurse Educator (2025-26 figure on its page) |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition | $803.00 | $779.50 |
| Simulation lab fee | $88.00 | $84.75 |
| Online course fee | $60.25 | $58.50 |
| Total per credit | $951.25 | $892.75 |
| UMKC’s estimated programme total | $43,757.50 (46 credits) | $36,602.75 (41 credits) |
The nurse educator page still showed 2025-26 rates when I checked, so expect its figure to rise to the 2026-27 level. UMKC’s estimates leave out clinical fees. Neither page shows a different rate for students outside Missouri.
Costs not covered by tuition
- Clinical fees, which UMKC excludes from its estimates.
- Travel and hotel for three or four NP residencies in Kansas City.
- Background checks, immunisations and compliance items for clinical sites.
- Your RN licence in your clinical state, plus credential evaluation and English test fees if you trained abroad.
- National certification exam fees for NP graduates.
Scholarships and financial aid
Federal loans through FAFSA are only for U.S. citizens and eligible non-citizens. UMKC points students to its financial aid and tuition pages; I did not find a scholarship on the MSN pages aimed at international online students. Employer tuition reimbursement is the usual way U.S. nurses fund this degree.
Accreditation and certification
UMKC’s MSN page links to its accreditation details but does not name the accrediting body on the page itself, so confirm it on the School of Nursing accreditation page before you apply. NP graduates sit the national certification exam for their specialty. UMKC does not publish MSN certification pass rates on the pages I checked.
How to write the UMKC personal statement
UMKC caps the statement at one page, which forces you to cut. Use it for three things only.
- Your reason for the specific track, tied to the patients you care for now.
- Proof you meet the experience expectation for that track, especially for NNP, PNP and WHNP.
- Your plan for clinicals: where you live, which licence covers that state, and who might precept you.
The three evaluation forms come from fixed people: supervisor, BSN faculty and a professional reference. Tell each one what your statement says so their forms back it up.
For illustration only, a PMHNP applicant might open like this:
“Last winter I admitted the same young man to our medical unit three times after overdoses, and each time he left before anyone from psychiatry could see him. I want to be the clinician who is there on the first admission.”
Common mistakes foreign-educated nurses make
- Assuming an online degree comes with a visa: a mostly online programme does not support F-1 status.
- Applying without the right licence: UMKC wants Missouri or your clinical state, and unencumbered.
- Using friends or co-workers as referees: UMKC rejects them.
- Writing a two-page statement: the limit is one page.
- Missing the experience rule: NNP and pediatric tracks want specific recent experience.
- Forgetting the two-step application: UMKC admissions and NursingCAS are separate submissions.
Who should apply
UMKC suits RNs in Missouri, Kansas and other authorised states who want an NP specialty, including less common choices such as women’s health and acute care pediatrics. The single tuition rate makes it fair value for out-of-state nurses, and the nurse educator track is a good choice if you cannot travel often.
If you are abroad or still working toward the NCLEX, get licensed and gain the required experience first. Our guide to recommendation letters with samples will help you brief your supervisor and faculty referee.
