The Iowa State Ivy MBA is the full-time, 48-credit MBA at Iowa State University’s Ivy College of Business in Ames, Iowa. U.S. News ranks it No. 38 in its 2026 list, and it is one of the easier top-40 programmes to get into: Poets&Quants reports a 73.5% acceptance rate for the 2025 cycle. International students paid $17,901 a semester in tuition at the graduate business rate in 2025-26, well under what private schools such as SMU Cox charge.
The full-time MBA admits for fall only, and the Graduate College lists 15 June as the deadline. International applicants are told to apply at least three months before the term starts, so in practice aim for the spring of 2027 for an August 2027 start. This guide covers the Iowa State MBA requirements for international students, English minimums, costs, scholarships and what to ask the college directly.

The Ivy College’s own MBA pages, which carry the class profile, scholarship and career figures, would not load when I checked in October 2026. The figures in this guide come from Iowa State’s Graduate College, the university catalog, the Registrar and Poets&Quants. Where the Ivy College is the only source for something, I say so, and you should check it on the Ivy MBA site.
Iowa State Ivy MBA ranking
U.S. News ranked the Ivy full-time MBA No. 38 in its 2026 Best Business Schools list, released on 7 April 2026. That puts it close to BYU Marriott and Florida Warrington, both at No. 39. Poets&Quants’ own 2026 ranking places Iowa State lower, at No. 61, which shows how much the two methods differ for smaller programmes.
Iowa State Ivy MBA acceptance rate and class profile
Poets&Quants, using data reported to U.S. News, gives these admission figures:
| Intake | Acceptance rate | Yield |
|---|---|---|
| Fall 2025 | 73.5% | 67.2% |
| Fall 2024 | 81.7% | 55.2% |
| Fall 2023 | 87.5% | 71.4% |
The admit rate has fallen for two straight years, but nearly three in four applicants still got in for fall 2025. A yield of about two-thirds is high for a programme at this rank. Most people Iowa State admits choose to enrol.
I could not confirm the class size, average GMAT or GRE, average GPA or international share from an official page. Poets&Quants did not list Iowa State’s application count in the table I used. Ask the Ivy graduate programs office for the current class profile before you decide whether to retake a test.
Iowa State Ivy MBA requirements for international students
- A four-year bachelor’s degree or its equivalent.
- Transcripts of all previous academic work.
- A GMAT or GRE score. It is required for the full-time MBA (it is only encouraged for the part-time Professional MBA).
- A minimum GPA of 3.0, which the programme says it may alter.
- Personal essays, uploaded with the online application.
- A resume.
- Two letters of recommendation.
- TOEFL, IELTS, PTE or Duolingo scores if English is not your native language and you did not graduate from a U.S. college or university.
- A financial statement showing how you will pay for your studies.
- An interview, by invitation.
Degree length
The Graduate College asks for a four-year bachelor’s degree or equivalent. Most Nigerian, Ghanaian and Kenyan degrees are four years or longer, so they fit. If your degree is three years long, ask the Graduate College whether it counts as equivalent before you pay for tests.
English requirements
| Test | Minimum |
|---|---|
| TOEFL iBT (taken before 21 January 2026) | 81 |
| TOEFL iBT (new 1 to 6 scale, from 21 January 2026) | Listed as 5; confirm with the programme |
| IELTS | 7.5 |
| PTE Academic | 68 |
| Duolingo English Test | 120 (accepted temporarily) |
The IELTS bar of 7.5 is high compared with the TOEFL 81, so if you are choosing a test, compare your practice scores on both. The Graduate College page does not list country exemptions for the MBA. The university catalog says the test is needed when English is not your native language and you did not graduate from a U.S. institution, so applicants educated in English in Africa or Asia should ask whether a waiver applies before booking.
Iowa State Ivy MBA deadlines 2026-2027
| Programme | Entry | Deadline |
|---|---|---|
| Full-Time MBA | Fall 2027 only | 15 June 2027 |
| International full-time applicants | Fall 2027 | At least three months before the term starts |
| Professional (part-time) MBA, priority dates | Fall / spring / summer | 15 June / 15 November / 15 March |
Treat 15 June 2027 as an outer limit. A visa interview, I-20 and travel all have to fit between admission and August, and the Graduate College’s three-month rule points to applying by spring. Scholarship and assistantship funds at most schools also run out as the year goes on, so an application in January or February gives you the best chance of funding.
How to apply, step by step
- Check eligibility: Confirm a four-year degree and a GPA at or near 3.0.
- Take the GMAT or GRE: A score is required for the full-time MBA.
- Take an English test: TOEFL, IELTS, PTE or Duolingo, unless Iowa State confirms you are exempt.
- Line up two recommenders, ideally supervisors who can describe your work.
- Write your personal essays and update your resume.
- Prepare the financial statement with bank letters or sponsor documents for at least the first year.
- Apply through Iowa State’s graduate application at least three months before the fall term.
- Interview if invited, then accept and request your I-20.
Iowa State Ivy MBA essays
The Graduate College and the catalog both say personal essays are part of the application, but the prompts and word limits sit on the Ivy College’s application pages, which I could not open. Most MBA programmes at this level ask some version of the questions below. Draft answers to them now, then adjust to the exact prompts when you start your application.
Why an MBA, and why now
Link a specific post-MBA job to the skills you lack today. Iowa State offers specialisations in accounting, accounting analytics, business analytics, entrepreneurship, finance, healthcare analytics and operations, information systems, leadership, marketing, real estate and supply chain management, so name the one you would choose and say why.
For illustration: “After four years planning distribution routes for a beverage company in Kumasi, I want the supply chain specialisation to move into network design for a U.S. manufacturer.”
Why Iowa State
Be concrete. Mention the specialisation, the cost, and anything you learned from talking to current students or attending an information session. A generic answer about rankings reads as if it could be sent to any school.
An achievement or leadership story
Pick one story with a clear problem, your actions and a measurable result. Recommenders often describe the same project, so make sure your essay and their letters support each other.
The Iowa State MBA interview
Interviews are by invitation. Neither the Graduate College nor the catalog describes the format, so ask whether it is by video and who conducts it. Prepare a two-minute summary of your career, your goal, your chosen specialisation and why Ames suits you.
What the admissions committee looks for
- Academic potential, which the catalog names as an important criterion, shown by your GPA and test score.
- Promise for a productive career, shown by your resume and goals.
- English ability at or above the published minimums.
- Two strong recommendations.
- A financial plan that will support an I-20.
Iowa State Ivy MBA tuition and cost
Iowa State charges a higher graduate business rate for the Ivy College. The Registrar’s latest published rates are for 2025-26:
| Graduate business rate, 2025-26 | Per semester | Two semesters |
|---|---|---|
| International | $17,901 | $35,802 |
| Nonresident (U.S.) | $16,910 | $33,820 |
| Iowa resident | $7,576 | $15,152 |
The two-semester totals are my arithmetic. Mandatory and programme fees are charged on top, and 2026-27 rates were not yet posted when I checked. At these rates, international tuition for a two-year programme would come to about $72,000 before fees and any increase, well below SMU Cox’s $51,337 for one nine-month year, though BYU charges non-Latter-day Saint students less ($63,968 for the whole two-year programme).
Costs not covered
- Mandatory university fees and any programme fees on top of tuition.
- Housing, food and winter clothing for Iowa.
- Health insurance.
- GMAT or GRE and English test fees.
- SEVIS fee, visa fee and flights.
- Living costs for a spouse or children, which the international office adds to the financial statement.
Iowa State Ivy MBA scholarships for international students
Scholarships and graduate assistantships for the Ivy MBA are described on the Ivy College’s pages, which I could not access, and the Graduate College page does not mention assistantships for the MBA. So I cannot tell you award names, amounts or whether international students qualify. When you email admissions, ask three things: whether international students receive merit scholarships, whether MBA students can hold graduate assistantships, and what share of last year’s class received any aid.
I found no mention of Prodigy Finance, MPOWER or loans without a U.S. co-signer on the Iowa State pages I could read. For outside funding, see our list of American scholarships for international students.
STEM designation and OPT
The university catalog entry for the MBA does not mention STEM designation, and the Ivy College page that would say so did not load. Do not assume you will get the 24-month STEM OPT extension. Ask the college for the CIP code of the full-time MBA and of any specialisation you plan to take, because only programmes with a qualifying CIP code allow the extension.
Iowa State Ivy MBA salary and employment
I could not confirm a median salary, employment rate or employer list for recent full-time MBA graduates from an official source. Ask for the latest full-time MBA employment report, and for the number of international graduates who found U.S. jobs with visa sponsorship. With a class this size, a few placements can move the averages a lot, so ask for counts as well as percentages.
Common mistakes international applicants make
- Missing the IELTS 7.5 minimum, which is higher than many schools ask.
- Treating 15 June as a safe date and then running out of time for the visa.
- Applying without a GMAT or GRE score, which the full-time programme requires.
- Sending only one recommendation.
- Assuming STEM OPT without checking the CIP code.
- Underestimating fees on top of the per-semester tuition.
Who should apply to Iowa State Ivy, and who shouldn’t
Apply if you want a ranked U.S. MBA at a public-university price, are interested in supply chain, analytics or finance careers in the Midwest, and want a high chance of admission.
Think twice if you need a big-city job market on your doorstep, or if you cannot get the class profile and employment data you need from the college before you commit.
