The ESPOLY Horticultural Technology cut-off mark is 100, JAMB’s national minimum for polytechnics for 2026/2027. Enugu State Polytechnic (ESPOLY), Iwollo, has not published a separate figure for the department, and the last floor it published for ND courses was 120, in 2021/2022, when Horticulture was on its list. Horticultural Technology is on JAMB’s course list for ESPOLY, so you can choose it in the UTME. I would plan for 140 or more.
2027/2028 update: ESPOLY cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.
The part of this course that catches people out is the subject combination. JAMB’s general rule for polytechnic Horticultural Technology asks for Mathematics with two of Chemistry, Physics and Technical Drawing, which is closer to an engineering line than to the Biology based line most agriculture courses use. I explain below what that means for your UTME registration, then cover O’level credits, ESPOLY’s application steps, a worked example, CAPS, and what the diploma leads to.

ESPOLY Horticultural Technology cut-off mark: official figures
ESPOLY announced on 15 May 2026 that it was accepting admissions for the 2026/2027 session, but the notice gives no minimum score (espoly.edu.ng). The figure that binds every polytechnic is JAMB’s: 100 for 2026/2027 (NAN, 11 May 2026), unchanged from 2025/2026 (Nairametrics, 8 July 2025). ESPOLY’s own last public floor came in its 2021/2022 screening notice, which invited ND candidates who scored 120 and above and listed Horticulture among 17 ND programmes (Myschool reprint).
| Session | Figure | Who set it | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2027/2028 | Not yet fixed; plan with 100 | JAMB | JAMB’s next policy meeting |
| 2026/2027 | 100 | JAMB national minimum for polytechnics | NAN, 11 May 2026 |
| 2025/2026 | 100 | JAMB national minimum for polytechnics | Nairametrics, 8 July 2025 |
| 2021/2022 | 120 | ESPOLY screening notice (all ND courses, Horticulture included) | Myschool reprint, 30 November 2021 |
No ESPOLY notice gives a departmental cut-off for Horticultural Technology. If a blog quotes one, ask where it came from.
Safe target score (consultant advice)
My planning number is 140. It is advice, not an ESPOLY figure. Agriculture courses at polytechnics rarely fill as fast as Accountancy or Computer Science, so you do not need a very high score. What you need is a clear margin over the old 120 floor, because ESPOLY may bring that floor back in any year without much notice.
| Your UTME score | What it means for Horticultural Technology at ESPOLY |
|---|---|
| Below 100 | Not eligible for any polytechnic |
| 100 to 119 | Eligible under JAMB’s rule, below ESPOLY’s last published floor |
| 120 to 139 | Reasonable chance if your O’level is complete |
| 140 to 169 | Good position |
| 170 and above | Strong; a university crop science or horticulture degree is also within reach |
UTME subject combination for ESPOLY Horticultural Technology
The JAMB polytechnic brochure entry that ESPOLY’s listing links to asks for Mathematics and any two of Chemistry, Physics or Technical Drawing, with Use of English compulsory for every candidate (brochure entry). The page carries remarks for other schools. The Federal College of Agriculture, Akure, for example, takes Biology or Agricultural Science, Chemistry and one of Economics, Technical Drawing, Physics and Geography, and two northern colleges take Biology or Agricultural Science with two of Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Economics and Geography. None of the remarks names Enugu State Polytechnic, so the general line is the rule JAMB holds ESPOLY candidates to.
| Subject | Status under the general rule |
|---|---|
| Use of English | Compulsory for every UTME candidate |
| Mathematics | Compulsory |
| Chemistry | One of the two choices (I would take it) |
| Physics | One of the two choices (I would take it) |
| Technical Drawing | Allowed in place of Chemistry or Physics |
| Biology or Agricultural Science | Not in the general line |
Which four subjects I would register
I would sit English, Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics. That set meets the general rule exactly. Plant science students often want Biology in the UTME, but Biology is not in ESPOLY’s line for this course, and a candidate who registers English, Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics does not have the two of Chemistry, Physics and Technical Drawing the rule asks for. Your Biology still counts at O’level.
One side effect: this combination does not fit ESPOLY’s Agricultural Technology or Animal Health and Production Technology, which both ask for Biology or Agricultural Science with Chemistry and another science. It does fit Computer Engineering, Electrical/Electronics Engineering Technology and Computer Science at ESPOLY. Decide early whether Horticulture is your real first choice, and check the course and subject screen on JAMB’s e-brochure when you register, since JAMB can edit brochure lines between cycles. Our JAMB Chemistry syllabus is a good place to start revising.
O’level requirements for Horticultural Technology at ESPOLY
The brochure asks for five credits in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry and any two of Biology or Agricultural Science, Technical Drawing, Basic Electronics or Basic Electricity, Auto Mechanics, Metal Work, Woodwork, Further Mathematics, English Language, Geography and Economics or Commerce. ESPOLY’s general ND rule, as Teezab reported it in July 2026, is five credits including English Language and Mathematics from no more than two sittings. Put the two together and the safe set is clear.
| Credit | Why you need it |
|---|---|
| English Language | ESPOLY’s general ND rule (reported); also on the brochure list |
| Mathematics | Compulsory in the brochure |
| Physics | Compulsory in the brochure |
| Chemistry | Compulsory in the brochure |
| Biology or Agricultural Science | Your fifth credit; it matches what the course teaches |
Sittings are capped at two, and WAEC, NECO and NABTEB results are accepted, according to Teezab. ESPOLY has not confirmed either point on a page I could open, so check the portal before you pay.
Direct Entry and HND
JAMB’s brochure page has a Direct Entry heading but no rule under it, so expect to enter Horticultural Technology through the UTME. NBTE’s January 2026 brochure of approved curricula lists both ND Horticultural Technology and HND Horticulture Technology. Teezab’s 2026 list of ESPOLY HND courses does not include horticulture, while the 19 new HND courses ESPOLY announced in February 2021 included Horticultural Technology. Whether ESPOLY runs the HND now is not confirmed. Our ESPOLY HND guide covers the general HND rules.
ESPOLY screening and a worked example
ESPOLY has not published a post-UTME test, screening fee or timetable for 2026/2027. Its website sends applicants to portal.espoly.edu.ng/applicant.php, and on 14 May 2026 it posted portal guides for ND 1 and HND 1 students. The fees schedule link on the site leads nowhere. The 2021/2022 notice asked candidates to choose ESPOLY first or change to it, and I would still list it as your first choice.
Worked example (illustrative)
Chidera scored 146 with English, Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics. Her NECO result from one sitting reads English C5, Mathematics C4, Physics C6, Chemistry B3, Agricultural Science B2. She is above JAMB’s 100, above ESPOLY’s old 120 and above my 140 target, and her five credits cover every brochure requirement plus English.
Many polytechnics rank ND applicants half on UTME and half on O’level. As an illustration only: 146 divided by 8 gives a UTME half of 18.25. Scoring A1 as 10, B2 as 9, B3 as 8, C4 as 7, C5 as 6 and C6 as 5, her grades give 6 + 7 + 5 + 8 + 9 = 35. Her illustrative total is 53.25 out of 100. ESPOLY has published no aggregate formula, so treat this as a way to compare yourself with other applicants, not as ESPOLY’s method.
Now take Emeka, who scored 152 but registered English, Biology, Chemistry and Agricultural Science. His score is higher, but his UTME subjects miss the Mathematics and Physics or Technical Drawing that the general line asks for, so CAPS may not match him to Horticultural Technology. His better route is Agricultural Technology at ESPOLY, whose line his subjects fit.
How to apply for Horticultural Technology at ESPOLY
- Create your JAMB profile: send NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the phone number you will use for registration. JAMB replies with your profile code.
- Choose the course on JAMB: select Horticultural Technology under Enugu State Polytechnic as your first choice, with English, Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics. If you registered elsewhere, use a change of course or institution.
- Write the UTME: aim for 140 or more, then follow our guide on how to check your JAMB result.
- Upload your O’level to CAPS: do this at a JAMB accredited centre. Upload both results if you used two sittings, and upload an awaiting result as soon as it is released.
- Apply on the ESPOLY portal: go to portal.espoly.edu.ng/applicant.php, choose Horticultural Technology and complete the form. Pay only the amount the portal generates and keep the receipt.
- Accept on CAPS: when ESPOLY offers you a place, accept it on JAMB CAPS. Under JAMB’s 2026 rules an offer not accepted within four weeks can be withdrawn. Our JAMB CAPS guide shows the screens.
- Pay acceptance and register: print your JAMB admission letter, then pay acceptance and school fees through the ESPOLY portal. ESPOLY has not published the amounts, so pay nobody outside the portal.
JAMB set 31 December 2026 as the 2026/2027 admission deadline for polytechnics, monotechnics and colleges of education, so the current cycle runs until that date. To move to ESPOLY, read JAMB change of institution; to switch course, see JAMB change of course.
Warning
JAMB’s 2026 policy meeting said admissions outside CAPS are illegal. An ESPOLY place counts only when it shows on your JAMB CAPS page, so ignore anyone selling “direct” or “supplementary” slots.
Your chances and other options
With 140 or more, the right four UTME subjects and five clean credits, I would rate your chances as good. For a course like this, a subject mismatch or a missing CAPS upload is a bigger risk to you than a modest score. That reading is mine; ESPOLY has not released applicant numbers.
| Option | JAMB position | Note |
|---|---|---|
| ESPOLY Agricultural Technology | On JAMB’s list for ESPOLY | Needs Biology or Agricultural Science and Chemistry in the UTME |
| ESPOLY Animal Health and Production Technology | On JAMB’s list for ESPOLY | Same UTME pattern as Agricultural Technology |
| UNN Crop Science (degree) | University route | JAMB’s university minimum for 2026 was 150 |
| ABSU Crop Production and Protection (degree) | University route | Biology based subject line |
Outside Enugu, Akanu Ibiam Federal Polytechnic, Unwana, runs a Horticulture and Landscaping Technology department according to its website. Check its JAMB course list before you choose it.
What you study in Horticultural Technology
ESPOLY has not published its course outline. Horticulture diplomas built on NBTE’s ND Horticultural Technology curriculum usually cover:
- Plant propagation by seed, cuttings, budding and grafting
- Nursery establishment and management
- Vegetable production and fruit crop production
- Ornamental plants, flowers and landscape design
- Soil science, fertilisers and irrigation
- Crop pests and diseases and their control
- Farm tools, basic farm machinery and farm records
- SIWES after the first year, then a final project
Irrigation, greenhouse work, plot surveying and machinery all lean on Physics and Mathematics, which may be why JAMB’s line asks for them.
Duration and accreditation
The full-time ND runs for two years. An HND, where offered, takes two more years after the ND and a year of industrial attachment. Whether ESPOLY’s Horticultural Technology programme holds current NBTE accreditation is not confirmed: ESPOLY publishes no accreditation list, and a JAMB listing does not prove accreditation on its own. Ask the department for its NBTE status before you pay school fees.
Careers
- Running a plant nursery or seedling business
- Landscaping and grounds work for estates, hotels and campuses
- Vegetable, fruit or greenhouse farming
- Field officer or sales rep for seed, fertiliser and agrochemical firms
- HND in Horticulture Technology, or a degree in crop science or horticulture

Mistakes to avoid
- Registering Biology instead of Physics: the general UTME line for this course has no Biology.
- Skipping the Physics credit: Physics is compulsory at O’level in the brochure.
- Treating 100 as enough: it makes you eligible, and ESPOLY has asked for 120 before.
- Forgetting the CAPS upload: ESPOLY cannot recommend you without your O’level on CAPS.
- Letting the four-week acceptance window pass.
ESPOLY Horticultural Technology cut-off mark: FAQs
What is the cut-off mark for Horticultural Technology in ESPOLY? ESPOLY has not published a departmental figure. JAMB’s minimum for polytechnics is 100 and ESPOLY’s last published ND floor was 120 in 2021/2022, so I would aim for 140.
Can I use Biology in JAMB for Horticultural Technology at ESPOLY? Not under the general rule, which is Mathematics with two of Chemistry, Physics and Technical Drawing, and ESPOLY has no special remark. Keep Biology or Agricultural Science for your O’level instead.
Is Horticultural Technology the same as Agricultural Technology at ESPOLY? No. They are separate courses on ESPOLY’s JAMB list with different UTME rules: Horticulture centres on fruits, vegetables, flowers and landscapes, while Agricultural Technology covers crops and livestock more broadly and needs Biology or Agricultural Science in the UTME.
Can I do HND Horticulture at ESPOLY after my ND? NBTE has an approved HND Horticulture Technology curriculum, but ESPOLY’s current HND list is unclear: ESPOLY’s February 2021 announcement included it and Teezab’s 2026 list does not. Ask ESPOLY before you plan around it.
