NTI Accelerated Teacher Professionalisation Pathway (ATPP) 2027/2028: Admission Requirements, Form, Fees and How to Apply

Who qualifies for the NTI ATPP in 2027/2028: serving teachers with a non-education degree or HND (PGDE route) or an ND/OND (PDE route) and 24 months’ experience. Fee, six-month structure, TRCN PQE and how to apply.

The NTI ATPP admission requirements for 2027/2028 are simple to state: you must already be teaching, you must not hold a teaching qualification, and you need either a non-education degree or HND (for the PGDE route) or an ND/OND (for the PDE route), with at least 24 months of classroom experience. There is no JAMB, no UTME and no cut-off mark. The Accelerated Teacher Professionalisation Pathway (ATPP) is a six-month federal programme coordinated by the National Teachers’ Institute (NTI), Kaduna, and its 2026 application window closed on 18 September 2026.

2027/2028 update: NTI admission requirements and entry rules usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the rules on this page are what 2027/2028 applicants should plan with. They come from the latest official announcements (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.

If you teach in Umuahia or anywhere else in Abia State with a BSc, HND or ND but no PGDE, NCE or B.Ed, this is the shortest official route to a TRCN licence on offer. Below I set out who qualifies, the two routes, the reported fee, how the six months are structured, what happens with TRCN afterwards, and how to get ready before the next cohort opens.

What the ATPP is and who runs it

The ATPP is a Federal Government programme for teachers who are already in classrooms but never trained as teachers. Legit.ng (16 September 2026) placed it under Pillar 6 (Education Quality Assurance) of the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative. ThisDay (12 September 2026) reported that NTI Kaduna was mandated to coordinate it, working with UBEC, TRCN, NERDC, the National Senior Secondary Education Commission and the NUC, under the supervision of the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa. TRCN’s own statement, carried by NAN on 18 September 2026, also named the NCCE among the supporting agencies.

The point of the programme is that you keep your job while you qualify. ThisDay reported that it is not meant to push unqualified teachers out of classrooms, and your teaching practice takes place in your own school.

About 250,000 serving teachers were mapped for the programme across federal, state and local government schools, and TRCN said it would run in cohorts. ThisDay reported that the first cohort was scheduled to launch in October 2026.

ATPP entry requirements: PGDE route and PDE route

Your qualification decides your route. Both routes last the same six months.

Which schools count

Private school teachers are included. Legit.ng listed public, private, ECCDE, primary, secondary, TVET, non-formal and alternative education settings, and also community instructors and volunteer educators. After School Africa’s reprint of the criteria named the same range of settings.

Documents to have ready

  • Your degree, HND, ND or OND certificate (or statement of result).
  • Evidence of at least 24 months of teaching, such as an appointment letter, a letter from your head teacher or proprietor, or posting records.
  • A valid means of identification.
  • A working email address and phone number for portal messages.

The first three come from After School Africa’s list of required documents. The examples of experience evidence are my suggestion; the portal decides what it accepts. A letter from a private school proprietor should be on headed paper, dated and signed, and should state your start date and the classes or subjects you teach.

ATPP form and fees

After School Africa (11 September 2026) gave the programme fee as ₦200,000 per teacher. The news reports I read (NAN, ThisDay and Legit.ng) did not print an amount. TRCN’s statement said that certification and licensing are covered by the programme fee. No separate application form price was reported.

Cost itemAmountStatus
ATPP programme fee₦200,000Reported by After School Africa; confirm on atpp.education.gov.ng
Separate application form feeNone reportedNo source mentions one
TRCN certification and licensingCovered by the programme feeTRCN statement (NAN, 18 Sep 2026)
Travel to a study centre, data and printingYour own costMy advice; budget for it

Compare that with NTI’s regular PGDE, which blogs list at ₦10,500 for the form plus ₦56,000 and ₦35,000 for the two semesters over 15 months. The ATPP costs more and is far shorter, and it only takes teachers who are already in post.

How the six months are structured

PhaseLengthWhat happens
Blended studyAbout 4 monthsSelf-paced online modules, virtual facilitated sessions and assessment checkpoints; After School Africa adds study centres to the mix
Supervised teaching practiceAbout 2 monthsIn your own school, with a mentor and supervisor; you keep evidence such as lessons taught, pupils’ work and supervisor sign-offs
ATPP examinationEnd of programmeCompleting it qualifies you for the TRCN PQE
TRCN PQEAfter the programmePass, then TRCN registers you and issues a licence

ThisDay reported that about 40 content experts from universities, colleges of education and agencies wrote the PGDE and PDE modules, and that you cannot move forward on online work alone. Teaching practice evidence counts. If your school is chaotic about lesson notes, sort that out before your cohort starts; you will need documented lessons.

Study centres in Abia State

NTI runs state offices with study centres, but no source I reached gives an Umuahia or other Abia ATPP centre address. After School Africa listed NTI, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, UNILAG, UNIPORT, UNILORIN, ABU, UNIMAID, NOUN, MIVA Open University, Meadow Hall College of Education and Babcock University as delivery institutions. Which one serves Abia teachers will be shown on the portal after allocation. Do not travel to a centre on the strength of a WhatsApp message.

How to apply for the NTI ATPP, step by step

JAMB, CAPS and O’level uploads play no part in this programme. Applications go through the ATPP portal.

  1. Check your route: degree or HND means PGDE; ND or OND means PDE. Count your teaching months; you need 24.
  2. Get your experience letter early: ask your head teacher, proprietor or your state schools board now, before a short window opens.
  3. Scan your documents: certificate, experience evidence and ID, clear and readable, named sensibly so you can upload them fast.
  4. Register on the portal: go to atpp.education.gov.ng, confirm eligibility, create your account and fill the application.
  5. Pay only through the portal: After School Africa reports ₦200,000. Keep your payment receipt and screenshots.
  6. Wait for selection and allocation: After School Africa says accredited ATPP institutions check your qualification and teaching experience, then assign you.
  7. Complete the blended study and practicum: four months of modules, then two months of supervised teaching practice in your school.
  8. Sit the TRCN PQE: pass it to be registered as a qualified teacher and licensed.

Warning

A programme for 250,000 teachers with a short window attracts agents who sell “ATPP slots” and fake portals. Apply yourself at atpp.education.gov.ng (a .gov.ng address), and never pay into a personal account.

ATPP deadline and the next cohort

The first window closed on 18 September 2026, only about a week after the programme was announced. TRCN described the ATPP as running in cohorts, so later windows are expected. They are announced on the portal and by the Federal Ministry of Education, and the 2026 one gave applicants very little notice. If you qualify, have your documents scanned and your experience letter signed now, so you can apply on the first day.

Worked example: which route fits you

These are illustrations of how the published rules apply. Selection is done by the ATPP institutions.

  1. Chiamaka, BSc Microbiology, teaching Basic Science at a private school in Umuahia since January 2024: by late 2026 she has more than 24 months. She fits the PGDE route.
  2. Emeka, ND Computer Science, teaching Computer Studies in Aba for 18 months: he has the right qualification for the PDE route but is 6 months short on experience. He should keep teaching, keep records and apply in a later cohort.
  3. Ngozi, NCE (Primary Education Studies), teaching for five years: she already has a teaching qualification. ATPP is not for her; her next steps are TRCN registration and, if she wants a degree, NTI’s Bachelor’s Degree Programme.
  4. Obinna, SSCE only, a volunteer teacher: without an ND or degree he does not fit either route. NCE is his path.

ATPP compared with NTI’s regular PGDE

If you have a degree but are not yet teaching, the ATPP is closed to you, and the regular NTI Postgraduate Diploma in Education is the route. If you are a serving graduate teacher who can apply in the next cohort, I would choose the ATPP for its speed and the built-in TRCN step.

Accreditation and recognition

NTI is a federal institute established in 1976 to train and upgrade teachers through distance learning. The ATPP is a Federal Ministry of Education programme with TRCN as a named partner, and TRCN said that teachers who pass the PQE after it are registered and licensed. That is the recognition that matters for a classroom job. I have not seen any NUC or NCCE document on the status of the PDE as an award, so I would treat its standing outside teaching as not confirmed.

What you study and where it leads

The detailed module list has not been published. Professional teacher programmes in Nigeria normally cover educational psychology, curriculum and methods of teaching, classroom management, assessment, and safeguarding, which After School Africa also named as a focus. With a TRCN licence you are on a stronger footing for permanent posts, promotion and employment in schools that now demand licensed staff.

Other NTI programmes

If you are a school leaver who wants to become a teacher through a college of education, admission now goes through JAMB’s NCE registration and CAPS; our JAMB CAPS guide explains the statuses.

Mistakes that cost teachers an ATPP place

  • Applying with less than 24 months of teaching experience.
  • Picking the PGDE route with an ND, or the PDE route with an HND.
  • Waiting for a school letter until the window opens, then missing a one-week deadline.
  • Paying an agent or a lookalike site instead of the .gov.ng portal.
  • Treating the online modules as the whole programme and neglecting teaching practice evidence.
  • Assuming the ATPP certificate alone is the licence; the TRCN PQE comes after it.

NTI ATPP admission requirements: frequently asked questions

Can HND holders apply for the ATPP PGDE? Yes. After School Africa’s reprint of the criteria places non-education HND holders with at least 24 months of teaching on the PGDE route.

How much is the ATPP form and fee? After School Africa reported ₦200,000 per teacher, and no separate form fee was reported. TRCN said certification and licensing are covered by the programme fee; confirm the amount on atpp.education.gov.ng before paying.

Can a teacher who is not currently teaching apply for ATPP? No. The programme is for serving teachers, and teaching practice happens in your own school. Graduates who are not teaching should look at NTI’s regular PGDE.

Do I need JAMB for the NTI ATPP? No. There is no UTME, cut-off mark or CAPS step; you apply on the ATPP portal.
