Syracuse University Admission Requirements for International Students 2027: Acceptance Rate, Tuition, Scholarships and Deadlines

Syracuse University Admission Requirements for International Students 2027: Acceptance Rate, Tuition, Scholarships and Deadlines
Syracuse admitted about 48.8% of first-year applicants for fall 2025, is test-optional through 2028 and considers international students for merit scholarships. Here are the $100,526 proof-of-funds figure for 2026-27, English minimums by school, the essay and the fall 2027 deadlines, including new Early Action.

Syracuse University admission requirements for international students are a Common App or Coalition application, one short “why Syracuse” essay, one academic recommendation, your school records and an English test, with SAT and ACT scores optional through fall 2027. Syracuse admitted 22,756 of 46,645 first-year applicants for fall 2025, an acceptance rate of about 48.8%, and it is No. 72 among National Universities in the U.S. News 2027 edition.

For international families, cost decides most applications. Syracuse asks F-1 applicants to show liquid funds for a full year, which it estimates at $100,526 for 2026-27. International applicants are considered for merit scholarships, but the international pages do not describe need-based aid, and the average award to an international student in the latest Common Data Set was $14,262. For fall 2027, Syracuse has added a new non-binding Early Action round on 1 November 2026, alongside Early Decision I (1 November 2026), Early Decision II and Regular Decision (both 5 January 2027).

Syracuse ranking

Syracuse is No. 72 among National Universities in the U.S. News 2027 edition, published in September 2026. Some of its schools rank higher in their fields. The S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications is one of the best-known journalism and media schools in the US, and the Maxwell School is highly regarded for public affairs. If you want media, communications or public policy, judge Syracuse by the school you would join.

Syracuse acceptance rate and class profile

These figures come from Syracuse’s Common Data Set 2025-26, which reports the class that entered in fall 2025.

Syracuse does not publish an international acceptance rate. The rate also varies by school: Newhouse and some design and architecture programmes are much more competitive than the university average, and they set higher English score expectations.

Syracuse tuition for international students in 2026-27

International and US students pay the same tuition. The Common Data Set 2025-26 lists these first-year charges for 2026-27.

Item2026-27 amount
Tuition$69,180
Required fees$1,869
Housing$12,220
Food$8,360
Subtotal$91,629

For your visa, Syracuse uses a higher figure. Its international requirements page says you must show liquid funds for one full academic year equal to the total cost of attendance, currently estimated at $100,526 for 2026-27. The 2027-28 figure will be finalised in spring 2027, so expect it to rise a little.

Does Syracuse give scholarships to international students?

Syracuse considers international applicants for merit scholarships, and students who do not send test scores remain eligible for them. Its international pages do not list scholarship names or amounts, and they say nothing about need-based aid for international first-years.

The Common Data Set gives a sense of scale. In 2025-26, 682 nonresident undergraduates received institutional aid, with an average award of $14,262 a year. That helps, but it leaves most of the $100,526 for your family to cover. Plan your finances on that basis and treat any merit award as a bonus.

Financial documents for international applicants

For international applicants, Syracuse’s main financial step is the Visa/Financial Support Information Form in your applicant portal. You upload:

  • proof of liquid funds for one year (the $100,526 figure for 2026-27), from bank statements or letters dated within one year of your start date, in English, with the currency stated
  • a copy of your passport
  • a sponsor letter if a government or company is paying, giving the US dollar amount, duration and what it covers

Screenshots, income statements and tax returns are not accepted as proof of funds. Write your name, date of birth and programme on every document you upload.

Testing and English requirements

SAT and ACT scores are not required for fall 2026, spring 2027, fall 2027 or spring 2028 entry, and Syracuse says non-submitters are not disadvantaged.

If you live outside the US and English is not your first language, you must send an English test. Syracuse accepts TOEFL, TOEFL At Home, IELTS, Cambridge English, PTE and Duolingo. It does not accept TOEFL Essentials, TOEFL ITP, TOEFL MyBest scores or IELTS Indicator. Its preferred minimums depend on the school:

School or collegeTOEFL iBT (old / new scale)IELTSCambridgeDuolingo
Arts and Sciences, Maxwell, VPA, Education, Engineering and Computer Science, Falk, Information Studies85 / 4.56.5176125
Whitman School of Management, Architecture90 / 57.0185125
S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications102 / 57.0185130

Send scores directly from the testing service (TOEFL code 2823). Meeting the minimum does not guarantee admission. A waiver is possible, at the committee’s discretion, if you studied in person at a US secondary school for at least three full years. Students from bilingual or non-English curricula must send a test, and Syracuse recommends testing even if you think you qualify for a waiver.

If you are strong academically but short on English or funds, Syracuse may offer conditional admission. Only applicants with an official TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge or PTE Academic score can be considered, and you will not receive your I-20 until the conditions are met.

What goes into a Syracuse application

  1. Application form: the Common Application or the Coalition Application on Scoir.
  2. Essay: the Common App personal essay plus the Syracuse supplement.
  3. Recommendation: one academic recommendation.
  4. Transcripts: official records with English translations. If only one original exists, notarised or certified copies are accepted. Include a grading key if your scale is not shown.
  5. English test: as above.
  6. SAT or ACT: optional.
  7. College-specific materials: portfolios or auditions for some programmes in Architecture, Visual and Performing Arts, Arts and Sciences, and Engineering and Computer Science.
  8. Visa/Financial Support Information Form: with proof of funds.
  9. Fee: $85. You can request a waiver with an SAT or ACT fee waiver, a NACAC waiver, or a letter from your counselor on school letterhead emailed as a PDF to orange@syr.edu.
  10. Interview: optional. Syracuse offers virtual interviews and accepts Vericant (for applicants in Asia) and InitialView.

Two eligibility points catch international applicants out. IGCSE or GCSE completion alone does not make you eligible; you need at least one more year of study, such as A Levels or a final secondary year. BTEC qualifications are not accepted.

How to write the Syracuse supplemental essay

For 2026-27, Syracuse has a single supplemental prompt asking why Syracuse is a good match for your interests and goals. It replaced the earlier two-part prompt. Check the word limit in the Common App when you open the Syracuse section.

How I would write it:

  • Name the school and programme. Syracuse admits you to a specific college. Mention the Newhouse, Whitman or Maxwell programme you want and one or two concrete features, such as a course, studio or research centre.
  • Link it to something you have already done. A school magazine you edited or a business you ran gives the reader evidence that the interest is real.
  • Say what you would contribute. One or two sentences on what you would bring to a club, newsroom or lab shows you have pictured yourself there.
  • Avoid praising the campus in general terms. The reader knows Syracuse has a beautiful quad.

A sample opening, for illustration only:

“I started a radio programme at my school in Kampala with a borrowed microphone and a phone. Two years and 40 episodes later, I want to learn how to do it properly, and the broadcast and digital journalism major at Newhouse is where I want to learn it.”

What happens after you apply

  1. Portal access: you get a Syracuse applicant portal to track documents and upload your financial form.
  2. Review: Syracuse reviews you for your chosen college and, at the same time, for merit scholarships.
  3. Decision: timing depends on your plan (see the table above).
  4. Deposit and I-20: after you accept and your proof of funds is approved, Syracuse issues your Form I-20.
  5. Visa: pay the SEVIS fee and book your F-1 visa interview.

Common mistakes international applicants make

  • Applying with IGCSE results only. Syracuse needs at least one more year of study.
  • Sending a TOEFL Essentials or IELTS Indicator score. Neither is accepted.
  • Aiming at the general English minimum for Newhouse. Newhouse prefers TOEFL 102 or IELTS 7.0.
  • Uploading screenshots of bank balances. Syracuse wants dated statements or letters in English.
  • Expecting need-based aid. The international pages describe merit scholarships, not need-based aid.
  • Picking Early Decision without the money in place. ED is binding, so only use it if your family can pay.

Costs that Syracuse aid does not cover

  • English test and score-sending fees, and the $85 application fee if you have no waiver.
  • The SEVIS fee and US visa application fee.
  • Flights and travel during breaks; Syracuse also warns you to budget for breaks and summer.
  • Winter clothing. Central New York gets heavy snow, and you will need a proper coat, boots and gloves.
  • Health insurance and medical costs.
  • Books, a laptop and personal spending.

Majors and strengths

Syracuse’s best-known programmes are in communications and journalism (Newhouse), public affairs, economics and international relations (Maxwell), architecture, business (Whitman), information studies (the iSchool), engineering and computer science, and visual and performing arts. Sport management in the Falk College is also popular. Because each college has its own entry standards, choose your first-choice programme carefully.

Campus and city

The campus is on a hill above downtown Syracuse in upstate New York. It is a big, sports-centred university with a lively campus life, and the city is small and affordable compared with New York City, which is a few hours away by road or rail. Winters are long and snowy.

Graduate admissions at Syracuse

Graduate programmes are run by each school and college, with admissions handled through the Graduate School. Master’s programmes in fields such as public administration (Maxwell), communications (Newhouse), information science and engineering attract many international students. Each programme sets its own English minimum, test policy and deadline, and funding through assistantships is mainly for PhD students.

FordhamNo. 85about 59%$102,720merit up to $25,000, limited need-aware grants

Syracuse is easier to get into than BU and costs a little less. Rochester and Fordham publish clearer merit ranges, which helps if you are comparing scholarship chances.

Who should apply to Syracuse

Apply if you want a large campus with strong media, public affairs, architecture or management programmes, your family can cover about $100,000 a year, and you are happy with a snowy college town. Its acceptance rate makes it a realistic target for many strong students.

Look elsewhere if you need need-based aid. Colleges such as MIT and Amherst are need-blind for international students, and our list of the best American scholarships for international students covers more funded options.

Sources and updates

I checked these figures on Syracuse University’s own pages on 29 October 2026: the international first-year requirements page, the international first-year checklist, the international enrollment options page, the Falk College admissions page, and the Syracuse University Common Data Set 2025-26. The supplemental prompt wording comes from a published 2026-27 prompt list because Syracuse shows it inside the Common App. The U.S. News profile page could not be opened, so the 2027 rank comes from published reports of the new edition. We update this guide when Syracuse changes its dates, costs or aid rules.
