RPI engineering graduate admission for international students runs through Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute’s central graduate admissions office. The fall 2027 PhD deadline is 15 December 2026 and the master’s deadline is 1 March 2027, with engineering master’s review starting on 5 January. The GRE is optional for all engineering programmes. You pay a $75 fee, upload a personal statement, a resume and unofficial transcripts, and need only two recommendation letters for most programmes. Citizens of countries where English is an official language, such as Nigeria or Ghana, should qualify for an English test waiver.
The Rensselaer School of Engineering is tied at No. 50 in the U.S. News 2026 Best Engineering Schools ranking. PhD students on assistantships receive a tuition waiver and a minimum 2026-27 stipend of $37,783. RPI is expensive for self-funded students: tuition is $66,300 for 2026-27 and the full graduate cost of attendance is $92,357.

RPI engineering ranking
The University of Dayton’s 2026 rankings release says Dayton is tied with Rensselaer and Brown in the U.S. News graduate engineering list, and Spectrum News 1 reported that shared position as No. 50. RPI’s engineering school is broad for its size, with nuclear, transportation and semiconductor technology programmes that many peers at this rank do not offer, and an MEng option in most fields for students heading straight into industry.
Departments and graduate programmes
The School of Engineering has seven departments: Biomedical Engineering; Chemical and Biological Engineering; Civil and Environmental Engineering; Electrical, Computer and Systems Engineering; Industrial and Systems Engineering; Materials Science and Engineering; and Mechanical, Aerospace and Nuclear Engineering. Graduate admissions lists these programmes for the School of Engineering:
| Programme | Degrees |
|---|---|
| Aerospace Engineering | MEng, MS, DEng, PhD |
| Biomedical Engineering | MEng, MS, DEng, PhD |
| Biomedical Data Science | MEng |
| Chemical Engineering | MEng, MS, DEng, PhD |
| Civil Engineering | MEng, MS, DEng, PhD |
| Computer and Systems Engineering | MS, PhD |
| Decision Sciences and Engineering Systems | PhD (fall start only) |
| Electrical Engineering | MS, PhD |
| Engineering Physics | MS, PhD |
| Environmental Engineering | MEng, MS, DEng, PhD |
| Health Sciences Engineering | PhD (fall start only) |
| Industrial and Management Engineering | MEng, MS |
| Materials Science and Engineering | MEng, MS, DEng, PhD |
| Mechanical Engineering | MEng, MS, DEng, PhD |
| Nuclear Engineering | MEng, MS, DEng |
| Nuclear Engineering and Science | PhD |
| Semiconductor Technology | MS |
| Systems Engineering and Technology Management | MEng |
| Transportation Engineering | MEng, MS, DEng, PhD |
Computer Science sits in RPI’s School of Science, not Engineering, and has its own GRE expectations. The MEng is a coursework degree aimed at industry; the MS usually includes a thesis or project and is the better route if you might go on to a PhD. The DEng is RPI’s applied doctorate.
RPI engineering admission requirements for international students
- One application per term: RPI does not allow more than one application per term, so choose your programme carefully.
- No edits after submission: check every upload before you submit.
- Degree: a completed four-year U.S. bachelor’s degree or its equivalent by the time you enrol.
- Transcripts: unofficial copies uploaded to the application, in English, with the transcript key, from all post-secondary study.
- Personal statement: your academic and research interests, career goals and relevant experience.
- Resume or CV: education, jobs, internships and research. Applicants on OPT or CPT should list what they are doing now.
- Two recommendation letters: from advisers, professors or research mentors. The Health Sciences Engineering PhD needs three.
- English test: unless waived.
- $75 fee: paid online after you submit.
English test minimums and waivers
| Test | RPI minimum |
|---|---|
| TOEFL iBT | 88 (or 4.5 on the new 6-point scale) |
| IELTS Academic | 6.5 |
| Duolingo English Test | 120 |
| PTE Academic | 59 |
- Some departments ask for higher scores.
- Practice test scores are not accepted. Scores older than two years can no longer be sent by the testing agencies.
- Citizens of countries where English is the official language do not need a test.
- Non-native speakers who have earned, or will earn, a degree from a regionally accredited U.S. university or from a country where English is official are also waived.
- The waiver is applied after you submit and RPI reviews the file. RPI does not publish its country list, so email gradadmissions@rpi.edu if you are unsure.
Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and several other African countries use English as an official language, so most applicants from them should qualify. Because RPI does not publish the list, I would ask before deciding not to test.
GRE policy
| Programme group | GRE |
|---|---|
| All School of Engineering programmes | Optional |
| All Computer Science programmes | Strongly recommended |
| Management PhD | Required |
Send scores to institution code 2757. If your grades are uneven or your degree is from a university U.S. readers may not know, a strong quantitative score can still help an optional-GRE application.
RPI engineering deadlines for 2027
| Intake and level | Deadline |
|---|---|
| Fall 2027 PhD | 15 December 2026 |
| Fall 2027 master’s | 1 March 2027 (engineering master’s review begins 5 January 2027) |
| Spring 2028 (all levels) | 15 August 2027 |
The spring 2027 deadline of 15 August 2026 has passed, so the spring row shows the 2028 intake (based on this year’s date; confirm on the official page when the call opens). RPI accepts late applications, but those that arrive on time get priority review. Decision Sciences and Engineering Systems and Health Sciences Engineering admit for fall only.
Apply early for engineering master’s
Engineering master’s review starts on 5 January 2027, and the Master’s Merit Scholarship is recommended by departments during admission review. Applying in January rather than at the 1 March deadline gives you a better chance at both a place and an award, and more time for the visa.
PhD funding at RPI engineering
RPI PhD students are usually supported by teaching or research assistantships. Each one includes a tuition waiver and a stipend for about 20 hours of work a week. RPI sets one minimum stipend for all graduate programmes, based on the cost of living for a single adult in Rensselaer County.
| Minimum stipend, 2026-27 | Amount |
|---|---|
| Academic year | $28,337 |
| Summer | $9,446 |
| Total | $37,783 |
Departments can pay more than the minimum. RPI also awards the Rensselaer Graduate Fellowship and the Graduate Dean’s Fellowship to top PhD candidates on department recommendation. They add a one-time relocation grant and a summer top-up for one to five years. RPI does not publish their value or say whether they are open to international students, so ask the department when you get an offer.
Master’s funding: what to expect
Departments can recommend full-time master’s students for the Master’s Merit Scholarship during admission review. RPI does not publish the amounts. A merit award will reduce your bill but will not cover RPI’s full cost, so plan on paying most of it yourself. Federal loans are only for U.S. citizens and permanent residents.
RPI engineering tuition and cost of attendance
| Item (2026-27) | Amount |
|---|---|
| Tuition (full time) | $66,300 |
| Part-time tuition | $2,760 per credit hour |
| Fees | $1,657 |
| Food and housing | $18,870 |
| Books and supplies | $1,680 |
| Personal expenses | $1,280 |
| Transportation | $540 |
| Health insurance | $2,030 in the budget table ($2,160 for the required plan in the notes) |
| Total cost of attendance | $92,357 |
These are RPI’s 2026-27 figures for graduate students. You can waive the health insurance if you have equal cover. For the visa document, RPI points international students to the estimated expenses on the graduate admissions site, so check that amount when you are admitted.
STEM OPT after an RPI engineering degree
F-1 students who finish a degree get 12 months of Optional Practical Training (OPT). Graduates of degrees whose CIP code is on the Department of Homeland Security STEM list can apply for a further 24 months, so up to three years of U.S. work in total. RPI engineering degrees normally qualify. RPI’s admissions page asks applicants already on OPT or CPT to list their current work on the resume, which is a reminder that many master’s students arrive with U.S. work experience. Confirm the CIP code of your programme with RPI’s international services office before you enrol.
Admission statistics
RPI does not publish graduate engineering acceptance rates or admitted student averages on the pages I checked. It does not set a public minimum GPA for graduate admission either. Use the deadline advice above and a strong statement to give yourself the best chance.
How to contact potential PhD advisers at RPI
Research assistantships at RPI are paid from faculty grants. A professor who wants to take you on can push for your admission and your funding, and fellowships come by department recommendation too.
- Shortlist two or three faculty: use the department research pages. Read a recent paper from each.
- Write by mid-November: the PhD deadline is 15 December.
- Keep it short: who you are, one result, why their lab, one question.
- Attach a one-page CV: with your grading scale.
- Follow up once: after about ten days.
A sample opening, for illustration: “Dear Professor [Name], I plan to apply to the Rensselaer PhD in [programme] for fall 2027 before the 15 December deadline. At [University] I worked on [project] using [method] and achieved [result], and your group’s recent paper on [topic] is the direction I want to take. Are you planning to take a new PhD student next year?”
How to write the RPI personal statement
RPI asks for your academic and research interests, career goals and relevant experiences. Since most programmes only need two letters, the statement carries more weight than it would elsewhere.
- Open with the problem or field you want to work in.
- Describe one or two projects with your own role and a measurable result.
- Name two or three RPI faculty and explain the fit.
- If you are choosing between MEng, MS and PhD, explain why your choice fits your career plan.
- Mention industry experience, internships or OPT work if you have them.
- Address any weak semester briefly. You cannot edit the application after submission, so proofread it twice.
Common mistakes international applicants make
- Applying to two programmes in one term: RPI allows only one application per term.
- Submitting too early with errors: applications cannot be changed after submission.
- Uploading transcripts without the key: RPI needs the grading key, in English.
- Converting your CGPA yourself: give your grades as issued with the scale and let RPI interpret them.
- Applying with a three-year degree: RPI needs a four-year bachelor’s or its equivalent by enrolment. Ask before applying if yours is three years.
- Assuming the English waiver applies: it is decided after review, so check early.
- Underestimating costs: the 2026-27 cost of attendance is $92,357.
Costs not covered by funding
- The $75 application fee.
- English test and score report fees.
- Visa and SEVIS fees, flights and a rent deposit in Troy.
- Winter clothing for upstate New York.
- Fees and insurance if your assistantship does not include them; confirm this in your offer letter.
Who should apply to RPI engineering
I would apply to RPI for a PhD in nuclear engineering, materials, semiconductors, transportation or another field where its programme list is unusually deep, as long as an assistantship comes with the offer. Its fall PhD deadline is reasonable and the application is light, with two letters and an optional GRE. A self-funded master’s is a different matter: at $92,357 a year it is one of the most expensive options at this rank, so only go that way with a sponsor or a large merit award.
