The MOUAU Plant Science and Biotechnology cut off mark is 150 in the UTME, with MOUAU as your first choice. Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike gave that single minimum for all courses in its 2026/2027 screening notice and did not publish a figure for this department on its own.
2027/2028 update: MOUAU cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.
Plant Science and Biotechnology is usually less crowded than Biochemistry or Microbiology, but 150 still only gets you into screening. This page covers the official figures, a safe target score (my advice), the JAMB brochure rules with the one remark that names Umudike, how MOUAU screening works, a worked example, the CAPS steps and what the course involves.
MOUAU Plant Science and Biotechnology cut off mark: the official figures
| Item | 2026/2027 position | Source |
|---|---|---|
| MOUAU minimum UTME score (all courses) | 150, with MOUAU as first choice | MOUAU notice, via Myschool reprint (20 June 2026) |
| JAMB national minimum for universities | 150 | JAMB 2026 policy meeting (11 May 2026) |
| Departmental cut-off for Plant Science and Biotechnology | Not published | No MOUAU figure exists |
| Screening fee | ₦2,000 through Remita | MOUAU notice |
| College | College of Natural Sciences (COLNAS) | MOUAU department list |
| UTME subjects | Use of English, Biology, Chemistry and one other science subject | JAMB brochure (Myschool reprint) |
| Safe target score | 180 and above | My advice |
Cut-off history for Plant Science and Biotechnology at MOUAU
| Session | Figure | What it is | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026/2027 | 150 | MOUAU minimum to register for screening, all courses, MOUAU as first choice | MOUAU notice signed by the Registrar, read through Myschool’s reprint |
| 2026 (national) | 150 | JAMB minimum for all universities | Official, JAMB policy meeting |
| 2025/2026 | Not verified | Blogs say 150; I could not open MOUAU’s own 2025 notice | Unconfirmed |
| Any year, Plant Science and Biotechnology only | Not published | MOUAU has not released a merit cut-off for this course | No official figure |
MOUAU uses one floor of 150 for all its courses. Pages that print a MOUAU “departmental cut-off” for Plant Science and Biotechnology do not point to any MOUAU document, so treat their numbers as guesses. The merit line is drawn after screening, and MOUAU does not publish the score of the last candidate it admitted.
Safe target score for Plant Science and Biotechnology at MOUAU (my advice)
Fewer candidates pick Plant Science and Biotechnology as a first choice than pick the health-linked sciences, and that tends to keep competition lower. MOUAU publishes no application figures, so this is my reading of the course, and the bands below are my judgement as an admissions adviser.
| Your UTME score | My read for MOUAU Plant Science and Biotechnology |
|---|---|
| Below 150 | Not eligible to register for MOUAU screening |
| 150 to 164 | Eligible but risky; you need very good O’level grades from one sitting |
| 165 to 179 | A fair chance, helped by A or B grades in Biology and Chemistry |
| 180 to 199 | Competitive |
| 200 and above | Strong |
For the 2027 UTME I would aim for at least 180, with all five O’level credits from one sitting. A score in the 160s can still work if your O’level is clean, so do not give up on the course because you missed 180 by a few marks.
MOUAU is a federal university and takes students from every state. It has not said how it divides places between merit, catchment and educationally less developed states, so a weak score is unlikely to be rescued by your state of origin.
JAMB subject combination for Plant Science and Biotechnology at MOUAU
JAMB’s brochure entry for Plant Science and Biotechnology, as reprinted by Myschool, gives the UTME subjects as Biology, Chemistry and any other science subject, plus Use of English. The only UTME remarks on that entry are for two other federal universities, so the general combination applies at MOUAU.
| UTME subject | Status |
|---|---|
| Use of English | Compulsory |
| Biology | Compulsory |
| Chemistry | Compulsory |
| One other science subject | Your choice; Physics is the safest |
I suggest Physics as the third subject. It is one of the five O’level credits this course asks for, so you will have studied it already, and it keeps Microbiology and Biochemistry open if you later need to change course. Mathematics is the other common choice.
O’level requirements for Plant Science and Biotechnology
| Requirement | What the brochure says |
|---|---|
| General rule | Five credits in English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics |
| MOUAU remark | None on O’level, so the general rule applies |
| Sittings | MOUAU’s notice says the number of sittings is weighted, so one sitting ranks you higher |
| Exams accepted | WAEC, NECO, NABTEB |
| Awaiting result | MOUAU told candidates not to register for screening until their results were out |
All five subjects are fixed. Some schools listed on the entry accept a pass in Physics or swap it for Geography or Agricultural Science, but those waivers do not mention MOUAU or Umudike. Plan for a credit in Physics.
Direct Entry into MOUAU Plant Science and Biotechnology
| Route | What the brochure says |
|---|---|
| General DE rule | Two A level passes in Biology, Botany or Zoology and Chemistry or Physics |
| Umudike remark | “UMUDIKE accepts ‘A’ level passes in Chemistry and Biology /Botany” |
The brochure uses “UMUDIKE” for this remark. Myschool’s list of schools on this page is incomplete and does not show MOUAU, while MOUAU’s own department list includes Plant Science and Biotechnology. For Direct Entry, the remark means Chemistry plus Biology or Botany at A level; Zoology and Physics are not named for Umudike. The remark is silent on ND and HND, so check with MOUAU’s admissions office before buying a DE form.
How MOUAU screening works
The rules below come from MOUAU’s 2026/2027 screening notice, signed by the Registrar, Dr (Mrs) Nkeiruka Charity Mbanasor. Expect the 2027/2028 exercise to look similar, but go by the new notice once it is out.
| Detail | MOUAU 2026/2027 screening |
|---|---|
| Who could apply | Candidates with 150 or more in the 2026 UTME who chose MOUAU first; others could change to MOUAU on the JAMB portal first |
| Registration opened | 6 June 2026, online through www.mouau.edu.ng |
| Registration and validation | portal.mouau.edu.ng |
| Fee | ₦2,000 through Remita, by card or cash at any bank |
| O’level | WAEC, NECO or NABTEB results uploaded to JAMB CAPS at an accredited CBT centre |
| How O’level counts | O’level results and the number of sittings are weighted |
| Awaiting results | Not allowed to register until results are out |
| Payment problems | portal@mouau.edu.ng |
| Closing date and test date | Not stated in the notice as reprinted |
Nothing in the notice describes a written Post-UTME test, so I would not prepare as if one is certain. Assume MOUAU ranks you on your UTME score plus your O’level grades, with a single sitting working in your favour. Keep checking the portal anyway, because the notice told candidates to look there for screening results, admission status and any extra step.
Worked example for two Plant Science and Biotechnology candidates
MOUAU has not published an aggregate formula, so this example only compares scores with the official minimum and my target. It is illustrative.
Kelechi scored 191 in the UTME, with B3 in English, C4 in Mathematics, B2 in Biology, B3 in Chemistry and C5 in Physics, all at one WAEC sitting.
- Eligibility: 191 minus 150 = 41. Kelechi clears MOUAU’s minimum comfortably.
- Against my safe target: 191 minus 180 = 11. That puts Kelechi above my target for Plant Science and Biotechnology.
- O’level check: credits in English, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics at one sitting. The rule is met, and the single sitting helps.
- Advice: keep MOUAU as first choice, register for screening as soon as it opens and accept quickly on CAPS.
Amarachi scored 168, with a pass (D7) in Physics in the first sitting and a credit in the second. Amarachi is eligible (168 minus 150 = 18), and the Physics credit from the second sitting completes the five, but the score is 12 below my target and two sittings count against. Amarachi should register early and get every document right.
How to apply for Plant Science and Biotechnology at MOUAU, step by step
- Get your JAMB profile code: send NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the phone line linked to your NIN.
- Register the UTME with MOUAU first: pick Plant Science and Biotechnology with Use of English, Biology, Chemistry and one other science subject. If another school is already your first choice, do a JAMB change of institution before MOUAU’s screening opens.
- Upload your O’level to CAPS: do this at a JAMB-accredited CBT centre. MOUAU’s notice expects your WAEC, NECO or NABTEB result to be there.
- Register for screening: once MOUAU announces the exercise on www.mouau.edu.ng, register and validate on portal.mouau.edu.ng with your JAMB registration number.
- Pay the screening fee: it was ₦2,000 in 2026/2027, paid on the Remita invoice the portal generates. Print every receipt and slip.
- Watch the portal: MOUAU posts screening results and admission status there, and the decision then shows on JAMB CAPS.
- Accept on CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, choose Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS, and accept. In 2026 JAMB gave candidates four weeks to accept.
- Pay acceptance and clear: MOUAU has not published its acceptance fee or school fees in any source I reached. Pay only the amount on your MOUAU portal invoice.
Warning
Some websites print a “MOUAU departmental cut-off” for Plant Science and Biotechnology, and some people sell admission “slots”. MOUAU’s notice gave one minimum of 150 for every course, and every genuine offer shows on JAMB CAPS. Pay MOUAU only through the Remita invoice from its portal.
JAMB set 31 October 2026 as the date for public universities to finish 2026/2027 admissions. If you applied in 2026, check CAPS now. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains each status you may see, and our guide on checking your JAMB result covers what to do with your score.
Studying Plant Science and Biotechnology at MOUAU
Plant Science and Biotechnology is one of four departments in MOUAU’s College of Natural Sciences (COLNAS); the others are Biochemistry, Microbiology, and Zoology and Environmental Biology. The campus is at Umudike, about 10 km from Umuahia in Abia State. The Federal Government set MOUAU up in November 1992 as a university of agriculture, and academic work started in May 1993. The National Root Crops Research Institute is also based at Umudike, which gives plant students a research neighbour close by.
What you study
MOUAU has not put a full course outline for Plant Science and Biotechnology online in any source I reached. A Nigerian B.Sc in this field normally covers the areas below.
- First year: general biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics and general studies.
- Plant form and classification: anatomy, morphology and taxonomy of flowering and non-flowering plants.
- Plant physiology: photosynthesis, water relations, growth and plant hormones.
- Genetics and breeding: inheritance, plant breeding and crop improvement.
- Biotechnology: plant tissue culture, molecular techniques and their use in agriculture.
- Ecology and plant pathology: plant communities, conservation and plant diseases.
- Industrial training and project: SIWES placements and a final year research project.
Duration and accreditation
Nigerian B.Sc science degrees usually take four years for UTME entrants, with Direct Entry students joining at 200 level. MOUAU’s own duration for Plant Science and Biotechnology is not confirmed in the sources I reached. I could not confirm the programme’s current NUC accreditation status either, so ask the department before you pay acceptance.

Mistakes that cost Plant Science and Biotechnology applicants a MOUAU place
- Leaving out Chemistry: Biology and Chemistry are both fixed in the UTME combination.
- Counting on a Physics pass: the Physics waivers on the entry are for other schools.
- Treating 150 as safe: it only opens the screening door.
- Choosing MOUAU second: the notice asked for MOUAU as first choice.
- O’level missing on CAPS: the notice requires the upload.
- Registering while awaiting results: MOUAU told candidates to wait until results were out.
- Paying anyone outside the portal: MOUAU fees go through the Remita invoice from its portal.
If you need to switch course or school after the UTME, read JAMB change of course and JAMB change of institution.
MOUAU Plant Science and Biotechnology cut off mark: frequently asked questions
