Caltech Engineering Graduate Admission 2027 for International Students: Ranking, GRE, Funding and Deadlines

Caltech Engineering Graduate Admission 2027 for International Students: Ranking, GRE, Funding and Deadlines
Caltech engineering is tied for No. 6 in the U.S. News 2026 list. International applicants get a fall-only intake, a 15 December 2026 deadline, optional GRE, no fixed TOEFL minimum and a $50,000 PhD stipend; master’s study is mostly self-funded.

Caltech engineering graduate admission for international students is mainly a PhD admission. The Division of Engineering and Applied Science (EAS) admits once a year, for fall only, and most of its options close on 15 December 2026 for fall 2027 entry. The application fee is $100, the GRE is optional for the engineering options, and Caltech sets no minimum TOEFL or IELTS score.

Every Caltech PhD student who is enrolled full time and making progress gets full tuition and mandatory fees plus a stipend of $50,000 for 12 months from 1 September 2026. Master’s study is a different story: Caltech offers only a few master’s degrees, generally does not fund them, and charges $71,022 in tuition and fees for 2026-27. EAS is tied for No. 6 in the U.S. News 2026 Best Engineering Schools list, and it is small. Mechanical and civil engineering, for example, receives 250 to 300 applications in a typical year and makes 25 to 30 offers.

Caltech engineering ranking

In the U.S. News 2026 Best Engineering Schools list (released 7 April 2026), Caltech, the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and UT Austin share No. 6. U.S. News ranks the whole engineering school, but the number tells you less at Caltech than at a big public university. EAS has six departments and small intakes (MCE makes 25 to 30 offers a year), so who you would work with matters far more than the overall rank.

Caltech engineering graduate programmes

EAS departmentGraduate degrees
Aerospace (GALCIT)Master’s in aeronautics and in space engineering, dual master’s with École Polytechnique, PhD in aeronautics and in space engineering
Medical EngineeringPhD
Applied Physics and Materials SciencePhD in applied physics, PhD in materials science
Computing and Mathematical SciencesPhD in applied and computational mathematics, computer science, and control and dynamical systems; master’s, Engineer’s degree and PhD in electrical engineering
Environmental Science and EngineeringPhD
Mechanical and Civil EngineeringPhD in applied mechanics, civil engineering and mechanical engineering

Notice where the master’s degrees are: aerospace and electrical engineering. Mechanical and civil engineering has no MS-only programme and admits MS-only students only in exceptional cases. If you want a taught master’s in mechanical engineering, Caltech is the wrong school.

Caltech engineering graduate admission requirements

You apply online through the Graduate Studies Office and choose one option. Documents typically include transcripts from each university, a statement of purpose, a CV and recommendation letters; check the 2026-27 requirements page for your option, because once you submit, Caltech will not let you change your documents. Mechanical and civil engineering sets no GPA minimum but says GPA is a factor, and it expects a strong undergraduate background in mathematics, physics and engineering.

GRE policy

Caltech’s application instructions list the GRE as recommended, with no disadvantage if you leave it out, for aeronautics, space engineering, applied mechanics, applied physics, materials science, mechanical, civil, electrical, medical, and environmental science and engineering, and for the computing options. The mechanical and civil engineering page and the aerospace page both call it optional. If you send one, a self-reported score is enough to apply, but you must send an official report before admission.

English requirement

Caltech’s 2026-27 catalogue does not make an English test a condition of admission and sets no minimum score. It does say applicants whose first language is not English, and who did not earn a degree where English is the main language of teaching, should show strong English. Caltech accepts TOEFL, IELTS, PTE Academic, Duolingo, Cambridge exams and other certified tests, and lets you self-report.

There is one wrinkle. The aerospace department says TOEFL is required for applicants whose first language is not English. If you are applying to GALCIT from a non-English-speaking country, take a test. If your degree was taught in English, for example in Nigeria, Ghana or Kenya, you can usually leave the test out elsewhere in EAS, but a good score never hurts. After admission, Caltech assesses the English of international students who did not graduate from an English-medium university and may place them in ESL courses.

Caltech engineering application deadlines 2026-27

The portal shuts at 12:01 a.m. Pacific time on the day after the deadline. Across Caltech, 2026-27 deadlines run from 1 December to 15 January, and some non-engineering options such as chemical engineering and bioengineering close on 1 December, so confirm your option on the 2026-27 deadlines sheet before you plan around 15 December.

Fall entry only

Caltech admits graduate students once a year. If you miss 15 December 2026, the next chance is fall 2028.

Funding for Caltech PhD and master’s students

Caltech’s Graduate Studies Office guarantees the PhD package as long as you study full time and make satisfactory progress, which includes finding a thesis adviser. The support can come from fellowships, research assistantships, teaching assistantships or a mix, and there is no separate financial aid form.

ItemFigure
PhD stipend from 1 September 2026$50,000 for 12 months
PhD stipend for 2025-26$48,244 for 12 months
Tuition and mandatory feesCovered for PhD students
Stipend paymentMonthly, taxable
Outside workUp to eight hours a week, only with the graduate dean’s written approval

Caltech notes that most funding needs US work authorization and that matriculation generally requires evidence of it. For an international student this is normally handled through the student visa and payroll paperwork after admission; ask your option manager if you are unsure.

Master’s funding

Caltech says it generally does not give financial support to master’s students and admits a few terminal master’s students each year without aid. Those students pay tuition and fees, must cover living costs, cannot take outside jobs, and study full time through the summer. The exception is aerospace: GALCIT awards several one-year fellowships, mostly to entering master’s students who show potential for doctoral study, typically covering full tuition and a living stipend. Admission and aid are decided separately there, so some students are admitted without a fellowship.

Named fellowships

The Graduate Studies Office lists internal fellowships including ARCS, J. Yang, Kanel, KAUTE and the MOE Taiwan-Caltech fellowship. Several big external awards that GALCIT mentions (NSF, Department of Defense and Hertz) are for US citizens. International applicants should look at government scholarships from their home country, which a Caltech admit can bring, since a fellowship that pays your stipend makes you cheaper for an adviser to take.

Caltech tuition and living costs

Item2026-27
Tuition$68,574
Mandatory fees$2,448
Tuition and fees total$71,022

Caltech’s published living-cost budget is still the 2025-26 one. For one student it runs from $31,774 a year (a bed in a four-bedroom campus apartment) to $44,554 (a two-bedroom unit in a Caltech-owned lease). That covers housing, food at $8,904, books at $1,400, health, dental and vision at $965, and personal costs at $9,585. A self-funded master’s student would therefore need at least about $102,800 for the first year, adding the cheapest living budget to 2026-27 tuition and fees.

STEM OPT after graduation

Caltech’s engineering degrees fall under engineering fields on the US Department of Homeland Security’s STEM Designated Degree Program List, so F-1 graduates can normally apply for the 24-month STEM extension after the first 12 months of OPT. Your I-20’s CIP code and an E-Verify employer decide the final answer, and federal rules can change, so confirm with Caltech’s International Student Programs office.

How to contact potential PhD advisers at Caltech

With 25 to 30 offers in a whole department, fit with a faculty member decides a lot of Caltech files. Read the group pages of three or four faculty, pick the two whose current projects you could actually join, and write to each one separately.

For illustration, an opening could read: “Dear Professor Mensah, I am applying to the Caltech Mechanical Engineering PhD for fall 2027. Your group’s recent work on soft robotic grippers connects to my undergraduate thesis, where I built and tested a pneumatic gripper on a $300 budget in Accra. Are you planning to take students next year?” Keep it short, attach a one-page CV, and do not send a generic message to twenty people. The name and details in that example are invented.

Writing the statement of purpose for Caltech

Caltech is a research institute, so your statement should read like a research plan with a person behind it. Open with a concrete question you have worked on, explain what you did and what went wrong, and say what you want to learn to do next. Then name the Caltech faculty and say what you would study with each. If you are applying for a master’s in aeronautics or electrical engineering, say why the master’s and whether you plan a PhD afterwards, since GALCIT fellowships favour master’s students with doctoral potential.

Caltech has a stated policy on AI in personal essays in its applicant FAQ. Read it before you write. Your referees matter just as much; our recommendation letter guide explains what a strong academic letter contains.

Common mistakes international applicants make

  1. Applying for a master’s in a department without one: mechanical and civil engineering has no MS-only programme.
  2. Expecting master’s funding: outside GALCIT fellowships, Caltech generally does not fund master’s students.
  3. Missing the single deadline: there is no spring intake.
  4. Converting your CGPA: give your grades on your university’s own scale with your class of degree; a 3-year degree or an unusual scale is better explained than disguised.
  5. Skipping English evidence in aerospace: GALCIT asks for TOEFL from non-native speakers even though the Institute has no minimum.
  6. Leaving faculty fit vague: “I like your research” without naming a project wastes the statement.

Costs the PhD package does not cover

  • The $100 application fee, unless you get a waiver for financial need.
  • Test fees for the GRE or English tests you choose to take.
  • Visa, SEVIS and flight costs.
  • Pasadena rent, which is high; the stipend is taxable, so plan from the after-tax figure.
  • Optional dental and vision cover beyond the subsidised health plan.

Who should apply to Caltech engineering

Apply if you are aiming for a PhD, have research experience you can describe in detail, and are strong in mathematics and physics. Caltech suits people who want small groups and close supervision. I would not apply if you want a coursework master’s to move into industry quickly, or if your main draw is a large alumni network in a particular US city; a bigger public school will serve you better.
