ASU W. P. Carey MBA requirements for international students

  • A bachelor’s degree. Applicants with a three-year degree may qualify and should contact the school.
  • A resume that lists each position with start and end dates in month and year format.
  • Short essay responses. W. P. Carey says it does not accept personal statements, and sending one delays review.
  • One recommender’s name, affiliation and work email. ASU contacts them.
  • Unofficial transcripts from every institution that granted a bachelor’s or higher degree, in the original language with an official English translation. Self-translations, photocopies and notarised copies are not accepted as official.
  • GMAT or GRE, required unless waived. The at-home GRE is not accepted.
  • An English proficiency score if your native language is not English.
  • The $115 international application fee. Your application is not processed until it is paid.

English requirements

ASU’s graduate minimums are below. W. P. Carey warns that its own minimums may be higher, so treat these as the floor.

TestASU graduate minimum
TOEFL iBT80 for tests taken before 21 January 2026; ASU lists a band score for later tests
IELTS Academic6.5
PTE Academic60
Duolingo English Test105

W. P. Carey’s page says it does not accept the TOEFL iBT Home Edition, Paper Edition or TOEFL Essentials, while ASU’s general page lists the Home Edition as accepted for recent tests. Use a test-centre TOEFL to be safe. You are exempt automatically if you are a citizen of a country on ASU’s English Speaking Country and Territory List, and you can request an exemption with a form if your degree was taught only in English. Check that list for your country before booking.

GMAT and GRE waivers

You request a waiver through the optional essay in the application, explaining how your academic or professional background shows readiness. GMAT code: 0GZ-1R-80. GRE code: 4007. The fall 2025 class averaged 645 on the GMAT Focus.

International applicants

  3. Prepare transcripts with official English translations.

ASU W. P. Carey MBA essays 2026-2027

Essay 1Your career path right after graduation and five years after the MBA, including target roles, industries or companies, and how the W. P. Carey MBA helps500 words
Essay 2The top three moments in your life and how they prepare you for the MBA500 words
Essay 3What ASU’s charter, which measures the university by whom it includes and how they succeed, means to youNo limit stated
Essay 4 (optional)Anything else for the admission committee, including a test waiver request500 words

These are the 2026-27 prompts as reported by Clear Admit. W. P. Carey shows the prompts inside the application.

Essay 1: career path

Give two clear points: the job you want on graduation and where you want to be five years later. Name industries or companies, as the prompt asks. Then connect them to W. P. Carey concentrations such as supply chain management, business analytics or artificial intelligence.

For illustration: “On graduating, I plan to join a U.S. semiconductor manufacturer’s supply chain team as a sourcing manager, and within five years to lead procurement for its African distribution network.”

Essay 2: three moments

Choose three moments that show different sides of you, for example one professional, one personal and one about a setback. For each, say what happened and what it taught you, then end with how they prepare you for the MBA. The admissions director has said generic responses and not answering the question are the most common errors.

For illustration: “The first moment was a phone call at 2 a.m. telling me our only generator had failed, two days before the audit I was leading.”

Essay 3: the ASU charter

This asks for your view on inclusion and access. Write about a time you widened access for others, or benefited from someone who did, and what you would bring to a class where many students are funded. Keep it close to 500 words even though no limit is stated.

For illustration: “I was the first person from my secondary school in Enugu to sit the GMAT, and I only knew it existed because a former teacher forwarded me a free webinar link.”

The W. P. Carey interview

Interviews are by invitation, and historically about half of applicants are invited, according to the admissions director in a June 2026 Clear Admit interview. You meet a member of the recruitment and admission team and a Career Management Center representative for about 45 minutes, with time for your questions. For 2026-27 you can interview virtually or in person. The director describes it as a discussion, so prepare as you would for a professional job interview.

What the admissions committee looks for

  • Self-awareness and a clear answer to why an MBA, and why now.
  • Perspectives and experiences you will bring to a small class.
  • Leadership potential and realistic career goals.
  • Fit with W. P. Carey, in your own voice without borrowed jargon.
  • Each file is read by at least eight people and discussed individually, according to the director.

ASU W. P. Carey MBA tuition and cost

Student typeEstimated minimum total programme cost
Arizona resident$66,000
Nonresident$120,000
International$130,000

You also pay a non-refundable $1,000 enrolment deposit, credited to your first semester, and a $500 matriculation fee. W. P. Carey calls these estimated minimums and does not break them down by year on its programme page.

Costs not covered

  • Living costs in Tempe beyond what the school’s estimate includes; the page does not itemise them.
  • Health insurance, if not part of the estimate.
  • Books, a laptop and recruiting trips.
  • The SEVIS fee, visa fee and flights.
  • Proof of extra funds if your family comes with you.

ASU W. P. Carey MBA scholarships for international students

W. P. Carey’s programme page says more than 95% of full-time MBA candidates receive scholarship funding, with many receiving 100% tuition coverage. In a June 2026 Clear Admit interview, the admissions director went further and said every admitted full-time MBA student receives at least a 100% tuition scholarship, and that this is not limited to domestic students. Ask for your award in writing with your admission, and confirm whether it covers international tuition in full.

Graduate assistantships are also open to any full-time MBA student who wants one. They pay a stipend for about 10 hours of work a week in the W. P. Carey School during the academic year.

International students cannot take U.S. federal loans. W. P. Carey says private student loans may be an option, with terms varying by lender. It does not name Prodigy Finance or MPOWER. For more funding, see our list of American scholarships for international students.

STEM designation and OPT

The W. P. Carey full-time MBA is STEM-designated. W. P. Carey says eligible graduates on student visas can access up to 36 months of OPT, which is the standard 12 months plus the 24-month STEM extension. You do not need a special track.

ASU W. P. Carey MBA salary and employment

From W. P. Carey’s facts and figures page for the Class of 2025:

  • 72% employed at graduation.
  • 90% employed 90 days after graduation.
  • Average base starting salary: $121,116. The school does not publish a median.

W. P. Carey names Amazon, Deloitte, Microsoft and Walmart among employers that have frequently recruited its MBA candidates, but does not publish an industry breakdown or a split by citizenship on the pages I checked.

Common mistakes international applicants make

  • Uploading a personal statement, which W. P. Carey says will delay review.
  • Taking the GRE at home, which is not accepted.
  • Taking the TOEFL Home Edition without confirming W. P. Carey accepts it.
  • Sending notarised or self-translated transcripts.
  • Listing jobs on the resume without month and year dates.
  • Missing a document by the round deadline, which pushes the file to the next round.
  • Waiting for Round 4, after the priority international round has passed.

Who should apply to ASU W. P. Carey, and who shouldn’t

Apply if you want a STEM MBA with a strong chance of full-tuition funding, a small class, and interest in supply chain, analytics, consulting or technology. With an average of six years of experience, the class suits mid-career professionals.

Think twice if you want a large class and alumni network in your home country, a big-city financial centre, or if a 72% placement rate at graduation concerns you.
