ABSU Statistics Cut-Off Mark 2027/2028 and Admission Requirements

ABSU’s minimum for Statistics is 150 in the UTME. See a safe target score, what to register on JAMB, NUC accreditation, the screening steps and the careers the degree opens.

The ABSU Statistics cut off mark is 150 in the UTME. That is the minimum Abia State University (ABSU) set for every regular degree course in its 2026/2027 screening notice, for candidates who chose ABSU as first or second choice. ABSU did not publish a separate figure for Statistics, so 150 gets you into screening and your O’level grades do much of the work after that.

2027/2028 update: ABSU cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.

Statistics is listed on ABSU’s JAMB course list, and NUC’s record shows it with full accreditation. One gap you should know about: the JAMB brochure page that ABSU’s course list links to for Statistics would not load its requirements when I checked, so I could not confirm ABSU’s exact subject rules from it. I explain below what that means for your registration, along with the official figures, a safe target score, screening and careers.

ABSU’s 2026/2027 notice gave one figure for all courses. Any page that prints an official ABSU cut-off for Statistics alone, for any year, is quoting a figure ABSU itself never released. The practical cut-off each year is the score of the last candidate admitted into the course, and ABSU does not publish it.

Safe target score for Statistics at ABSU (my advice)

Statistics is usually one of the less crowded science courses at Nigerian state universities. In my experience, many Statistics students at state universities first applied for Computer Science, Accountancy or Economics, which means a candidate who chooses Statistics from the start, with good Mathematics, is in a comfortable position. This table is my advice, not an ABSU rule.

Your UTME scoreMy read for ABSU Statistics
Below 150Not eligible for screening
150 to 164Eligible; strong O’level grades will carry you
165 to 184A good chance with clean credits
185 and aboveStrong

I would aim for 165 or more, with at least a B3 in O’level Mathematics. If you scored 150 to 180 and applied for Computer Science at ABSU, Statistics is a sensible change of course: the UTME subjects overlap and the job market for data skills is wide.

JAMB subject combination and O’level for Statistics at ABSU

Myschool’s reprint of the JAMB brochure is the source I use to check each ABSU course, and the Statistics page it links to showed no requirements when I opened it on 29 October 2026; a second Statistics entry on the same site did not load either. So what follows is the usual pattern, not a confirmed ABSU rule.

RequirementWhat to plan forStatus
Course name on JAMBStatisticsConfirmed on ABSU’s JAMB course list
UTMEUse of English is compulsory and Mathematics is standard; JAMB’s usual Statistics entry pairs them with two of Physics, Chemistry and EconomicsNot confirmed; check the e-brochure
My safest pickUse of English, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, unless the e-brochure says otherwiseMy advice
O’levelFive credits; English Language and Mathematics are standard for science degrees; the other three subjects not confirmedPartly confirmed
Direct EntryNot confirmed for ABSUAsk the admissions office

Before you register, open the Statistics entry on JAMB’s official e-brochure at the registration centre or on your JAMB profile, and read the ABSU remark if there is one. It takes five minutes and protects you from a subject mismatch that no score can fix. If the e-brochure allows Economics, Mathematics, Physics and Economics may suit you; if it lists only science subjects, stay with Physics and Chemistry.

For O’level, plan on credits in English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Economics or another science. That set covers every common version of the Statistics requirement I know of, and ABSU’s notice asks for five O’level credits, with English and Mathematics standard for every science degree in Nigeria.

How ABSU screens applicants

The 2026/2027 notice was signed by the Registrar, Dr. Acho Elendu. I could not open the original on the ABSU website, so the details below come from two reprints that agree: Osilight (posted 9 June 2026) and Myschool (8 June 2026).

DetailWhat the 2026/2027 notice said
Who could applyCandidates who chose ABSU as first or second choice, or who changed to ABSU, and scored 150 or more in the UTME
Direct EntryBasic five O’level credit passes under ABSU’s entry requirements
Where to registerOnline at www.abiastateuniversity.edu.ng
What to uploadUTME result, O’level result and degree certificate where applicable, on the ABSU portal (www.portal.abiastateuniversity.edu.ng) and the JAMB portal
Fee₦2,000 by e-payment through the banks named in the notice, or by debit card
Missing the screeningCandidates who do not register “will not be considered for admission”
Written testNot mentioned; the notice describes online document screening
Closing dateNot stated in the reprints

The bank names came out garbled in the reprint, so follow the payment options shown on the ABSU portal itself rather than a list copied from a blog. Because the notice describes no written test, your UTME score and the quality of your O’level result are the two things ABSU has in front of it when it ranks you.

Worked example for Statistics candidates

ABSU has not published an aggregate formula, and the 2026/2027 notice describes document screening without a test. To show how your O’level can change your position, I use an illustrative method common at Nigerian universities: UTME score divided by 8 (up to 50 points) plus O’level points for five relevant subjects, where A1 = 10, B2 = 9, B3 = 8, C4 = 7, C5 = 6 and C6 = 5 (up to 50 points). This is my example, not ABSU’s formula.

  1. Chinedu scored 166 with B3 in English, B2 in Mathematics, B3 in Physics, C4 in Chemistry and B3 in Economics. UTME points: 166 ÷ 8 = 20.75. O’level points: 8 + 9 + 8 + 7 + 8 = 40. Illustrative total: 60.75.
  2. Ogechi scored 184 with C6 in English, C6 in Mathematics, C5 in Physics, C6 in Chemistry and C5 in Economics. UTME points: 184 ÷ 8 = 23. O’level points: 5 + 5 + 6 + 5 + 6 = 27. Illustrative total: 50.
  3. The result: Chinedu leads by 10.75 points. Ogechi had 18 more UTME marks, but Chinedu’s stronger credits, especially his B2 in Mathematics, put him ahead.

How to apply for Statistics at ABSU, step by step

  1. Get a JAMB profile code: text NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the SIM linked to that NIN. The code arrives by SMS.
  2. Register the UTME with the right subjects: choose Statistics at Abia State University with Use of English, Mathematics and the two other subjects JAMB’s e-brochure lists for the course (I would use Physics and Chemistry). ABSU accepted first and second choice candidates in 2026/2027, but first choice is still the cleaner position. To move ABSU up later, use a JAMB change of institution.
  3. Upload your O’level to CAPS: at an accredited JAMB CBT centre, once your result is out. Make sure the upload includes English, Mathematics and your other three credits.
  4. Register for ABSU screening: when the notice is out, go to www.abiastateuniversity.edu.ng, pay the screening fee (₦2,000 in 2026/2027) and upload your UTME result and O’level on the ABSU portal.
  5. Keep your receipts: save the payment receipt and the printout of your completed screening form. You may need both at clearance.
  6. Check your status: watch the ABSU portal and your JAMB CAPS page. ABSU offers show on CAPS before anything else.
  7. Accept on CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, choose Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS, and accept. JAMB gives four weeks. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains each status.
  8. Pay acceptance and clear: ABSU’s acceptance and school fees were not in any source I reached. Pay only the amount on your ABSU portal invoice.

Warning

Every genuine ABSU offer appears on JAMB CAPS, and JAMB said in May 2026 that admission outside CAPS is illegal. Anyone who asks for money to “process” a Statistics place is not acting for ABSU. Pay only through the ABSU portal.

JAMB kept 31 October 2026 as the date public universities such as ABSU should finish 2026/2027 admissions (Nairametrics, 28 September 2026). If you applied this year, the window runs until then, so check CAPS rather than waiting for a printed list.

Statistics at ABSU: the programme

Statistics sits in ABSU’s College of Biological and Physical Sciences on the main campus at Uturu, Isuikwuato LGA. ABSU began in 1981 as Imo State University and took its present name after Abia State was created in 1991.

What you study

ABSU has not published a course outline that I could reach. B.Sc Statistics in Nigeria usually covers:

  • Mathematical foundations: calculus, linear algebra and real analysis in the first two years.
  • Probability and inference: probability theory, distributions, estimation and hypothesis testing.
  • Applied statistics: regression, design of experiments, sampling and survey methods, time series and quality control.
  • Official and social statistics: demography, index numbers and vital statistics.
  • Computing: statistical software and programming, SIWES training and a final-year project.

Accreditation, degree and duration

NUC’s publication of accreditation results from 1990 to 2025 lists ABSU Statistics with full status as its latest result, after earlier interim results, and a maturity date of 2028. B.Sc Statistics runs four years for UTME entrants in Nigeria; ABSU’s own page confirming the duration was not available.

Careers

  • Data analyst or business intelligence roles in banks, telecoms and retail.
  • Statistician with the National Bureau of Statistics, state statistics offices and ministries.
  • Monitoring and evaluation officer with NGOs and health programmes.
  • Actuarial and insurance roles, with professional exams.
  • Market research and postgraduate study in statistics, data science or biostatistics.

If Chemistry is one of your UTME subjects, revise with our JAMB Chemistry syllabus. If you are writing in 2027, read when JAMB 2027 registration starts, and when results are out, see how to check your JAMB result. If your score or subjects do not fit, our JAMB change of course guide shows how to switch before admission closes.

Mistakes that cost Statistics applicants an ABSU place

  • Registering without reading the e-brochure: ABSU’s exact Statistics subject rule could not be confirmed from the reprint.
  • A weak Mathematics grade: it is the core of the degree and the first thing a ranking rewards.
  • Stopping at 150: that score only makes you eligible for screening.
  • Not registering for screening: the notice says such candidates will not be considered.
  • Missing the CAPS window: JAMB gives four weeks to accept.

ABSU Statistics: frequently asked questions

What subjects do I need for Statistics in ABSU? Use of English and Mathematics, plus two others. I could not confirm ABSU’s exact list from the brochure reprint, so check JAMB’s e-brochure; Physics and Chemistry is my safest pick.

Is Statistics in ABSU accredited? Yes. NUC’s published results list ABSU Statistics with full accreditation as its latest result and a maturity date of 2028.

Can I change from Computer Science to Statistics at ABSU? Yes, through a JAMB change of course before ABSU admits, as long as your UTME subjects and O’level fit Statistics. Most Computer Science candidates already have Mathematics and Physics.

Is 160 enough for Statistics in ABSU? 160 clears the 150 minimum, so you will be screened. With good credits from one sitting it is workable; I would aim for 165 or more.

Sources and updates

The 150 minimum, the first and second choice rule, the Direct Entry line, the ₦2,000 fee, the registration and upload steps and the warning about candidates who fail to register come from ABSU’s 2026/2027 screening notice signed by the Registrar, Dr. Acho Elendu, as reprinted by Osilight (9 June 2026) and Myschool (8 June 2026); I could not open the original on the ABSU website. The national minimum of 150, the four-week CAPS window and the warning on admissions outside CAPS come from the News Agency of Nigeria (11 May 2026), and the 31 October 2026 deadline for public universities from Nairametrics (28 September 2026). ABSU’s JAMB course list (Myschool reprint) confirms Statistics as an ABSU course; the linked brochure page for Statistics showed no requirements when checked, so the subject guidance on this page is labelled as unconfirmed. The accreditation history comes from NUC’s accreditation results, 1990 to 2025 publication. Campus and history details come from Wikipedia. The safe target table and the worked example are my own advice and illustration. ABSU’s fees, the degree title and duration were not published in any source I reached. Checked on 29 October 2026; this page will be updated if ABSU publishes a departmental cut-off or new requirements.
