The ABSU Mathematics cut off mark is 150 in the UTME. That is the minimum Abia State University (ABSU) set for every regular degree course in its 2026/2027 screening notice, for candidates who chose ABSU as first or second choice. ABSU did not publish a separate figure for Mathematics, so 150 gets you screened and your O’level does the rest.
2027/2028 update: ABSU cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.
Mathematics is one of the few courses where the JAMB brochure carries ABSU’s own remarks, and they matter. One remark says ABSU requires a Physics credit; another gives ABSU’s O’level line; and the Direct Entry remarks contradict each other. Below I set out exactly what the brochure says, what I would do about the conflicts, a safe target score, the screening steps and the careers the degree opens.
ABSU Mathematics cut off mark at a glance
| Item | 2026/2027 position | Source or status |
|---|---|---|
| ABSU minimum UTME score (all courses) | 150, ABSU first or second choice | ABSU notice reprinted by Osilight and Myschool, June 2026 |
| JAMB national minimum for universities | 150 | JAMB 2026 policy meeting, 11 May 2026 |
| Departmental cut-off | Not published | ABSU released no per-course figures |
| My safe target score | 170 or more | My advice, not an ABSU rule |
| Course name to pick on JAMB | Mathematics | ABSU’s JAMB course list (Myschool reprint) |
| UTME subjects | Use of English, Mathematics, and two of Physics, Chemistry and Economics or Geography | JAMB brochure (Myschool reprint) |
| O’level (ABSU remarks) | Five credits including English, Mathematics and Physics (safest reading) | JAMB brochure (Myschool reprint) |
| Direct Entry (ABSU remarks) | Conflicting: one says no Direct Entry, another accepts ND or HND | JAMB brochure (Myschool reprint) |
| NUC status | Full, maturity date 2028 | NUC accreditation results, 1990 to 2025 |
| Screening fee | ₦2,000 | Notice reprint |
ABSU Mathematics cut-off mark history
| Session | Figure | What it means | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026/2027 | 150 | Lowest UTME score ABSU accepted for online screening in any regular degree course (ABSU as first or second choice) | ABSU notice, reprinted by Osilight and Myschool, 8 to 9 June 2026 |
| 2026 (national) | 150 | JAMB minimum for every Nigerian university | JAMB 2026 policy meeting, 11 May 2026 |
| 2025/2026 | Not confirmed | I could not open an ABSU notice for that session | Unverified |
| Mathematics figure | None published | Blog “departmental cut-off” tables cite no ABSU document | Unofficial |
ABSU’s 2026/2027 notice gave one figure for all courses. Any page that prints an official ABSU cut-off for Mathematics alone, for any year, is quoting a figure ABSU itself never released. The practical cut-off each year is the score of the last candidate admitted into the course, and ABSU does not publish it.
Safe target score for Mathematics at ABSU (my advice)
Pure Mathematics attracts fewer applicants than Computer Science, and in my experience many Mathematics students at state universities first applied for another course. Competition is moderate. This table is my advice, not an ABSU rule.
| Your UTME score | My read for ABSU Mathematics |
|---|---|
| Below 150 | Not eligible for screening |
| 150 to 164 | Eligible; your O’level grades will decide most of it |
| 165 to 184 | A reasonable chance with clean credits |
| 185 and above | Strong |
I would aim for at least 170, and treat your Mathematics grade at O’level as part of your score. A B3 or better in Mathematics looks right for this course; a C6 does not help you in a ranking.
JAMB subject combination and O’level for Mathematics at ABSU
| Requirement | What the JAMB brochure says |
|---|---|
| Course name on JAMB | Mathematics |
| UTME (general line) | Use of English, Mathematics, and any two of Physics, Chemistry and Economics or Geography |
| O’level (general line) | Five SSC credits including English Language, Mathematics and Physics or Chemistry |
| O’level (ABSU remark, with IMSU) | ABSU requires Physics |
| O’level (ABSU remark) | Five SSCE credits including English, Mathematics and Physics or Chemistry, plus any two subjects |
| Direct Entry (general line) | Two A-level passes in Mathematics and another science subject, or NCE merit in Mathematics and one of Physics, Chemistry or Economics |
| Direct Entry (ABSU remark) | “NDU, IMSU, and ABSU: No Direct Entry Admission” |
| Direct Entry (another ABSU remark) | ABSU accepts ND (upper credit) and HND (lower credit) plus UTME requirements |
For the UTME, write Use of English, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. The brochure also allows Economics or Geography as one of the two, so Mathematics, Physics and Economics is valid. I prefer Physics and Chemistry because they keep Statistics, Computer Science and Industrial Physics open if you change course later, and Physics matches ABSU’s O’level remark.
The Physics question at O’level
ABSU’s two O’level remarks do not say quite the same thing. One, shared with IMSU, says ABSU requires Physics. The other lists English, Mathematics and Physics or Chemistry plus any two subjects. The general line also says Physics or Chemistry. The way to satisfy every reading is simple: have a credit in Physics, along with English and Mathematics, and two other subjects. Chemistry and another science are the natural pair. If you only have Chemistry and no Physics, you meet one remark and fail the other, so confirm with ABSU before you rely on it.
Direct Entry
The brochure contradicts itself on ABSU. One remark lists ABSU among universities that admit no Direct Entry candidates into Mathematics. Another says ABSU accepts ND at upper credit and HND at lower credit “plus UTME requirements”, which reads as if diploma holders still need to meet the UTME subject and O’level rules. The 2026/2027 notice itself mentions Direct Entry screening with five O’level credits but says nothing course by course. Until ABSU clarifies, I would not buy a Direct Entry form for Mathematics without written confirmation from the admissions office; the UTME route is the safe one.
How ABSU screens applicants
The 2026/2027 notice was signed by the Registrar, Dr. Acho Elendu. I could not open the original on the ABSU website, so the details below come from two reprints that agree: Osilight (posted 9 June 2026) and Myschool (8 June 2026).
| Detail | What the 2026/2027 notice said |
|---|---|
| Who could apply | Candidates who chose ABSU as first or second choice, or who changed to ABSU, and scored 150 or more in the UTME |
| Direct Entry | Basic five O’level credit passes under ABSU’s entry requirements |
| Where to register | Online at www.abiastateuniversity.edu.ng |
| What to upload | UTME result, O’level result and degree certificate where applicable, on the ABSU portal (www.portal.abiastateuniversity.edu.ng) and the JAMB portal |
| Fee | ₦2,000 by e-payment through the banks named in the notice, or by debit card |
| Missing the screening | Candidates who do not register “will not be considered for admission” |
| Written test | Not mentioned; the notice describes online document screening |
| Closing date | Not stated in the reprints |
The bank names came out garbled in the reprint, so follow the payment options shown on the ABSU portal itself rather than a list copied from a blog. Because the notice describes no written test, your UTME score and the quality of your O’level result are the two things ABSU has in front of it when it ranks you.
Worked example for Mathematics candidates
ABSU has not published an aggregate formula, and the 2026/2027 notice describes document screening without a test. To show how your O’level can change your position, I use an illustrative method common at Nigerian universities: UTME score divided by 8 (up to 50 points) plus O’level points for five relevant subjects, where A1 = 10, B2 = 9, B3 = 8, C4 = 7, C5 = 6 and C6 = 5 (up to 50 points). This is my example, not ABSU’s formula.
- Nnamdi scored 170 with B3 in English, A1 in Mathematics, B3 in Physics, C4 in Chemistry and B3 in Further Mathematics. UTME points: 170 ÷ 8 = 21.25. O’level points: 8 + 10 + 8 + 7 + 8 = 41. Illustrative total: 62.25.
- Amarachi scored 188 with C5 in English, C6 in Mathematics, C6 in Physics, C6 in Chemistry and C5 in Further Mathematics. UTME points: 188 ÷ 8 = 23.5. O’level points: 6 + 5 + 5 + 5 + 6 = 27. Illustrative total: 50.5.
- The result: Nnamdi leads by 11.75 points. Amarachi had 18 more UTME marks, but Nnamdi’s A1 in Mathematics and cleaner credits put him in front.
How to apply for Mathematics at ABSU, step by step
- Get a JAMB profile code: text NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the SIM linked to that NIN. The code arrives by SMS.
- Register the UTME with the right subjects: choose Mathematics at Abia State University with Use of English, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry (or Economics or Geography as one of the two). ABSU accepted first and second choice candidates in 2026/2027, but first choice is still the cleaner position. To move ABSU up later, use a JAMB change of institution.
- Upload your O’level to CAPS: at an accredited JAMB CBT centre, once your result is out. Make sure the upload includes English, Mathematics and Physics, plus your two other subjects.
- Register for ABSU screening: when the notice is out, go to www.abiastateuniversity.edu.ng, pay the screening fee (₦2,000 in 2026/2027) and upload your UTME result and O’level on the ABSU portal.
- Keep your receipts: save the payment receipt and the printout of your completed screening form. You may need both at clearance.
- Check your status: watch the ABSU portal and your JAMB CAPS page. ABSU offers show on CAPS before anything else.
- Accept on CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, choose Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS, and accept. JAMB gives four weeks. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains each status.
- Pay acceptance and clear: ABSU’s acceptance and school fees were not in any source I reached. Pay only the amount on your ABSU portal invoice.
Warning
Every genuine ABSU offer appears on JAMB CAPS, and JAMB said in May 2026 that admission outside CAPS is illegal. Anyone who asks for money to “process” a Mathematics place is not acting for ABSU. Pay only through the ABSU portal.
JAMB kept 31 October 2026 as the date public universities such as ABSU should finish 2026/2027 admissions (Nairametrics, 28 September 2026). If you applied this year, the window runs until then, so check CAPS rather than waiting for a printed list.
Mathematics at ABSU: the programme
Mathematics sits in ABSU’s College of Biological and Physical Sciences on the main campus at Uturu, Isuikwuato LGA. ABSU began in 1981 as Imo State University and took its present name after Abia State was created in 1991. If you want to teach, note that ABSU also offers Mathematics Education (listed on JAMB as Education and Mathematics), which is a different degree with its own requirements.
What you study
ABSU has not published a course outline that I could reach. B.Sc Mathematics in Nigeria usually covers:
- Analysis and calculus: real analysis, complex analysis, differential equations and vector calculus.
- Algebra: linear algebra, abstract algebra, number theory and set theory.
- Applied mathematics: mechanics, numerical analysis, optimisation and mathematical methods.
- Probability and statistics: shared foundation courses with Statistics.
- Computing: programming and mathematical software, plus a final-year project.
Accreditation, degree and duration
NUC’s publication of accreditation results from 1990 to 2025 lists ABSU Mathematics with full status as its latest result and a maturity date of 2028. The record also shows an earlier denied result, so the programme recovered from that. Note that ABSU’s Mathematics Education entry in the same record shows denied as its latest result; do not mix the two up. B.Sc Mathematics runs four years for UTME entrants in Nigeria; ABSU’s own page confirming the duration was not available.
Careers
- Data analysis, actuarial and risk roles in banks, insurance and fintech companies (with professional exams).
- Software and quantitative roles, especially if you add programming skills.
- Mathematics teaching in secondary schools, after a teaching qualification.
- Operations research and planning roles in industry and government.
- Postgraduate study in mathematics, statistics, computer science or economics.

Mistakes that cost Mathematics applicants an ABSU place
- No Physics credit: one ABSU remark requires it.
- Buying a Direct Entry form without checking: one ABSU remark says no Direct Entry for Mathematics.
- Confusing Mathematics with Mathematics Education: they are different JAMB courses with different NUC records.
- Stopping at 150: that score only makes you eligible for screening.
- Not registering for screening: the notice says such candidates will not be considered.
- Missing the CAPS window: JAMB gives four weeks to accept.
ABSU Mathematics: frequently asked questions
Do I need Physics in O’level for Mathematics in ABSU? Yes, to be safe. One ABSU remark in the JAMB brochure says ABSU requires Physics, while another allows Physics or Chemistry, so a Physics credit satisfies both.
Can I use Economics in JAMB for Mathematics at ABSU? Yes. The brochure accepts Mathematics plus two of Physics, Chemistry and Economics or Geography, and ABSU has no UTME remark against it.
Does ABSU accept Direct Entry for Mathematics? The brochure gives two conflicting ABSU remarks: one says no Direct Entry, the other accepts ND (upper credit) and HND (lower credit). Get written confirmation from the admissions office first.
Is 170 good for Mathematics in ABSU? Yes. 170 is above the 150 minimum and, with good credits from one sitting, gives you a reasonable chance in a moderately competitive course.
Sources and updates
The 150 minimum, the first and second choice rule, the Direct Entry line, the ₦2,000 fee, the registration and upload steps and the warning about candidates who fail to register come from ABSU’s 2026/2027 screening notice signed by the Registrar, Dr. Acho Elendu, as reprinted by Osilight (9 June 2026) and Myschool (8 June 2026); I could not open the original on the ABSU website. The national minimum of 150, the four-week CAPS window and the warning on admissions outside CAPS come from the News Agency of Nigeria (11 May 2026), and the 31 October 2026 deadline for public universities from Nairametrics (28 September 2026). The UTME, O’level and Direct Entry rules, including ABSU’s remarks, come from Myschool’s reprint of the JAMB brochure entry for Mathematics, which ABSU’s JAMB course list links to. The accreditation history comes from NUC’s accreditation results, 1990 to 2025 publication. Campus and history details come from Wikipedia. The safe target table and the worked example are my own advice and illustration. ABSU’s fees, the degree title and duration were not published in any source I reached. Checked on 29 October 2026; this page will be updated if ABSU publishes a departmental cut-off or new requirements.
