Is the School of Psychiatric Nursing, Aba admitting for 2027/2028? On the latest official record, no. The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria’s list of approved schools (December 2025) shows the school’s psychiatric nursing programme with its approval withdrawn and the remark “Embargo placed on admission”. Until the council lifts that embargo, the school is not cleared to take new students, and any form sold in its name should be treated as a warning sign.
2027/2028 update: NMCN approval statuses can change after a re-accreditation visit, so the status on this page is what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. It comes from the latest official list (December 2025). If the council lifts the embargo or the school publishes an approved notice, we will update this page.
This page explains what the withdrawal means, why you should not pay for a form, how to tell this school apart from the psychiatric school at Itu, and which psychiatric and mental health nursing schools near Abia hold NMCN approval. It also sets out the route most Abia candidates should take instead: train as a general nurse first, then specialise.

| Remark | Embargo placed on admission | NMCN list, December 2025 |
| Admitting for 2027/2028? | Not cleared to admit while the embargo stands | Based on the NMCN entry |
| Official admission notice | None found | No school or state notice in sources checked |

What “withdrawn” and “embargo on admission” mean
The notes at the end of the NMCN list define the statuses it uses:
| Status | What the NMCN notes say |
|---|---|
| Full | Approval for five years |
| Provisional | Approval for two years |
| Embargo on intake | Lasts until deficiencies are corrected, a resource verification visit is done and the council’s Board lifts it |
| Denied or withdrawn | Lasts until deficiencies are corrected, a re-accreditation visit is done and the Board decides |
Both conditions apply to the Aba school’s entry. The council found problems, took away approval and told the school not to admit. There is no end date. It ends only when the Board decides after a fresh visit.
NMCN approval is what lets a school’s students be indexed with the council and sit its qualifying exams. If you enrol in a programme the council has barred from admitting, you risk spending years and fees on training that does not lead to registration.
Aba or Itu: two different schools
Many searches mix up two names. The School of Psychiatric Nursing, Itu is in Akwa Ibom State, not Abia, and is outside this page. The Abia school is the School of Psychiatric Nursing, Aba, and it is the one with the withdrawn approval. If a seller says “Aba” but shows you an Itu advert, or the other way round, walk away.
How the Aba school compares with other Abia schools
| School (as NMCN lists it) | Programme | NMCN status, Dec 2025 list |
|---|---|---|
| College of Nursing, Umuahia | Nursing; Midwifery | Nursing: Full (Sept 2023). Midwifery: Full (Sept 2018) |
| College of Nursing, Amachara | Nursing; Midwifery | Nursing: Full (April 2018). Midwifery: Full (Sept 2021) |
| ABSUTH, Aba (nursing training institution) and School of Post Basic Midwifery | Nursing; Midwifery | Both Full (Sept 2021) |
| School of Post Basic Midwifery, Abiriba | Post Basic Midwifery | Provisional (Sept 2021) |
| School of Psychiatric Nursing, Aba | Psychiatric Nursing | Withdrawn; embargo placed on admission |
Every other Abia state school on that table holds full or provisional approval. The psychiatric school is the only one under an embargo.
Approved psychiatric and mental health nursing schools near Abia
These are the psychiatric or mental health nursing entries in the South-East and South-South on the same December 2025 NMCN list. The list does not say whether each one takes school leavers (basic) or registered nurses (post-basic), so check the school’s own notice before you apply.
| School | State | NMCN status (Dec 2025) |
|---|---|---|
| School of Psychiatric Nursing, Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Enugu | Enugu | Full (Sept 2021) |
| School of Psychiatric Nursing, Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Calabar | Cross River | Full (Aug 2021) |
| School of Psychiatric Nursing, Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Uselu, Benin City | Edo | Full (Oct 2018) |
| College of Nursing, Eket (Mental Health/Psychiatric Nursing programme) | Akwa Ibom | Full (Feb 2021) |
| College of Nursing Sciences, AEFUTHA, Abakaliki (Mental Health Nursing) | Ebonyi | Provisional (July 2024) |
| Ezeala College of Nursing, Umuseke Okwudor, Njaba (Mental Health Nursing) | Imo | Provisional (Sept 2024) |
Enugu is the nearest fully approved psychiatric school for most Abia candidates. Note the dates: full approval runs for five years and provisional for two, so confirm the current status with the school when you apply. Further away, the list also shows fully approved psychiatric schools at Aro, Abeokuta (Ogun), Barnawa (Kaduna) and Maiduguri (post-basic).
The better route for most Abia candidates: nurse first, then psychiatry
Mental health nursing is part of general nurse training, and post-basic psychiatric nursing is open to nurses who are already registered. For a school leaver in Abia, that makes general nursing the safest first step.
| Route | Where in Abia | Entry (latest notice) | Guide |
|---|---|---|---|
| ND Nursing | Abia State College of Nursing Sciences, Amachara and Aba campuses | 2026 UTME, JAMB CAPS, five credits, age 16+ | Amachara requirements |
| General nursing (teaching hospital) | ABSUTH School of Nursing, Aba (Full, Sept 2021) | O’level; 2027 route to be announced | ABSUTH requirements |
| State nursing college | College of Nursing, Umuahia (Full, Sept 2023) | O’level; 2027 route not published | Umuahia requirements |
| Degree (BNSc) | Faculty of Nursing Science, ABSU, Uturu (Full, April 2024) | UTME and university screening | Check ABSU’s Post-UTME notice |
Other Abia degree options on the NMCN list are Gregory University, Uturu (Full, April 2024) and Rhema University, Aba (Full, June 2023). After you qualify and register as a nurse, you can apply to an approved post-basic psychiatric school such as Enugu.
Score to aim for on the nursing route
JAMB set 150 as the 2026 minimum for colleges of nursing (and universities), up from 140 for colleges of nursing in 2025. No Abia nursing school publishes its own cut-off. As advice, I would aim for 200 or more for a state college of nursing and higher for a university BNSc.
Steps if you want to become a psychiatric nurse from Abia
- Get your JAMB profile code: send NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019.
- Register for the 2027 UTME: choose Nursing with English, Biology, Chemistry and Physics (JAMB’s usual combination; confirm on the e-brochure), and pick an approved school.
- Upload your O’level to CAPS: credits in English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics at no more than two sittings.
- Apply through the approved school’s process: for the Abia ND Nursing intake that meant JAMB CAPS in 2026/2027; for a direct psychiatric school, follow its own published notice.
- Accept on CAPS: at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, under Check Admission Status. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains the statuses.
- Pay acceptance and clear: only through the account or portal in the school’s official letter.
- Specialise later: after registration as a nurse, apply for post-basic psychiatric nursing at an NMCN-approved school.
Warning
Posts saying an Abia nursing or midwifery “form is out, call 070…” are run by agents, not the schools. The 2026/2027 ND Nursing intake went through JAMB CAPS, and older entrance forms were paid through a Remita invoice on the state portal. Never pay a private phone number or a personal account for a form, a “slot” or an admission list. This applies doubly to any “School of Psychiatric Nursing Aba form”, because the school is under an admission embargo.
How to check a school’s NMCN status yourself
- Open the list: the NMCN publishes its approved schools as a PDF on nmcn.gov.ng (the December 2025 edition is linked in the sources below).
- Find the state: schools are grouped by state and numbered; Abia is section 1.
- Read the status and date: Full, Provisional, Withdrawn or Embargo, with the month and year.
- Read the remark: words such as “Embargo placed on admission” override any advert you have seen.
- Ask for proof: if a school says its status has changed, ask for the NMCN letter.
