GOUNI Biotechnology Cut-Off Mark 2027/2028 & Admission Requirements

GOUNI’s cut-off mark for Biotechnology is 150 and the form is free. See the UTME subjects, the O’level rule with Physics, the GOUNI Direct Entry remark, fees and what you study.

The GOUNI Biotechnology cut-off mark is 150 in the UTME. Godfrey Okoye University, Enugu set 200 for Medicine and Surgery and Law, 180 for Nursing and 150 for all other programmes in 2026/2027, and Biotechnology is one of those others. That is the same as JAMB’s national minimum for universities. GOUNI has not published a higher departmental score, and the application form is free.

2027/2028 update: GOUNI cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.

Biotechnology at GOUNI is a four-year B.Sc. run by the Department of Biological Sciences, alongside Microbiology and Applied Biology. JAMB lists it for GOUNI as Biotechnology, under Sciences, and the brochure carries a Direct Entry remark written for GOUNI. Below I cover the cut-off, the UTME subjects, the O’level rule in GOUNI’s own handbook, how the university decides, the fees and what the degree contains.

There is no separate Biotechnology figure from GOUNI for any year I checked. The 150 floor is what to plan with.

What score should you aim for? (my advice)

Biotechnology is newer and less crowded than Biochemistry or Microbiology at most Nigerian universities, and GOUNI decides forms one by one. These bands are my own reading, not a GOUNI rule:

Your UTME scoreMy read for GOUNI Biotechnology
Below 150Not eligible through UTME this year. Consider JUPEB at GOUNI, or resit.
150 to 164Eligible. Your O’level decides it, so check all five credits, Physics included.
165 to 184Comfortable at GOUNI, and above the 160 that UNN and ESUT set for their biotechnology-related degrees.
185 and aboveComfortable. If you want a medical angle, compare GOUNI’s Biochemistry too.

UTME subject combination and O’level for Biotechnology at GOUNI

JAMB’s Biotechnology entry is short. It has no GOUNI remark on the UTME or O’level lines, only on Direct Entry. The O’level line below comes from JAMB’s general rule and GOUNI’s own handbook, which agree.

RequirementBiotechnology at GOUNI
JAMB course nameBiotechnology (Godfrey Okoye University)
UTME subjectsUse of English, Biology, Chemistry and any other science subject
O’level, JAMB general lineFive credits in English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics
O’level, GOUNI handbookThe same five subjects at not more than two sittings

Direct Entry, JAMB remark for GOUNITwo A-level passes in Chemistry and any one of Physics, Mathematics or Biology; ND/NCE with good grades in the relevant O’level subjects
Direct Entry, GOUNI handbookFive credits plus at least two A-level, IJMB or JUPEB passes from Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics or Physics, into 200 level
JUPEB at GOUNIBiology, Chemistry, and Physics or Mathematics

Which UTME subjects to write

I would write English, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. “Any other science” includes Physics, Mathematics or Agricultural Science, but Physics is the choice that also fits Biochemistry, Microbiology, Nursing and Medicine at GOUNI, so you keep the most doors open if you change course. Mathematics is a sensible second choice if you are weak in Physics, because bioinformatics and statistics feature heavily later in the degree.

O’level in practice

  • Physics is required: both JAMB’s general line and GOUNI’s handbook list it. Agricultural Science is not named as a substitute for this course.
  • Sittings: not more than two, per the handbook.
  • Awaiting result: you can sit the UTME and fill the GOUNI form while waiting, but CAPS will not move until the result is uploaded.

Direct Entry and JUPEB

Biotechnology is one of the few GOUNI courses where JAMB’s brochure has a remark naming GOUNI on the Direct Entry line: two A-level passes in Chemistry and one of Physics, Mathematics or Biology, and the remark also mentions ND or NCE with good grades in the relevant O’level subjects. GOUNI’s handbook admits Direct Entry students into 200 level, where they need 90 units over three years. The form page tells Direct Entry applicants to use the current JAMB Direct Entry form.

GOUNI also runs JUPEB on campus, and its form page lists Biology, Chemistry, and Physics or Mathematics as the JUPEB subjects for this course. The programme lasts nine to eleven months, the on-campus form costs ₦10,000 and you need five O’level credits in not more than two sittings. A good JUPEB result is a route into 200 level. Since JAMB’s June 2026 guide, colleges of education no longer admit anyone into 100 or 200 level degree programmes, so a degree through a college is no longer a back door. Your real options outside the UTME are JUPEB, A-levels, or an ND followed by Direct Entry.

How GOUNI screens Biotechnology applicants

GOUNI’s official form page does not describe a Post-UTME test for undergraduates. You fill an online form, the admissions office checks it against your UTME score and O’level, and the decision comes to your e-mail. The page mentions no written test, no interview and no aggregate score for Biotechnology.

The reply comes by e-mail, so use an address you open every day and type it carefully; a single wrong letter means the offer never reaches you.

Worked example (illustrative)

GOUNI publishes no aggregate formula, so these examples only check the score and the subjects.

Chiamaka scored 176 in English, Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics. Her NECO (one sitting) shows C4 in English, B3 in Mathematics, B2 in Biology, C5 in Chemistry, C6 in Physics and B3 in Agricultural Science.

  1. Score: 176 is 26 above GOUNI’s 150.
  2. UTME subjects: Biology and Chemistry plus Mathematics as the other science.
  3. O’level: English, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics are all credits from one sitting.
  4. Next step: fill the free form, watch her e-mail, accept on CAPS.

Uchenna scored 158 with English, Biology, Chemistry and Agricultural Science. His WAEC has credits in English, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Agricultural Science, and E8 in Physics. His UTME is valid for Biotechnology, but his O’level is one credit short because Physics is required. He should resit Physics in the next NECO or GCE (keeping to two sittings in total) or ask GOUNI in writing whether a waiver is possible before he pays anything.

Admission odds and advice

  • Physics catches people: many biology-minded candidates drop it, and this course needs it at O’level.
  • Fix your institution early: GOUNI can only propose candidates who have it on their JAMB profile.
  • Apply early: GOUNI replies in about three working days.
  • Ask before paying: settle any doubt about subjects in writing.
  • Timing: JAMB set 30 November 2026 as the 2026/2027 admission deadline for private universities, and GOUNI repeated it in its news post of 12 May 2026. That window runs until 30 November 2026. JAMB announces the 2027/2028 dates each year, so expect a similar private-university date but check it when it comes out.

Biotechnology, Microbiology or Applied Biology?

GOUNI’s Department of Biological Sciences runs all three, each for four years, and they share the same fee line and the same 150 minimum. Biotechnology leans towards genetic engineering, cell culture, bioinformatics and industrial processes. Microbiology centres on micro-organisms, from food and water testing to clinical work. Applied Biology is the broad option, covering ecology, fisheries, wildlife and environmental work. Note that Applied Biology has no exact JAMB entry for GOUNI, while Biotechnology and Microbiology do.

How to apply for Biotechnology at GOUNI, step by step

  1. Get your JAMB profile code: send NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the phone line linked to your NIN.
  2. Register the UTME correctly: choose Godfrey Okoye University and the course “Biotechnology”, and write English, Biology, Chemistry and one other science, preferably Physics.
  3. Upload your O’level to CAPS: do it at a JAMB-accredited centre as soon as your WAEC or NECO result is out. GOUNI cannot propose you on CAPS until the result is there.
  4. Make GOUNI your institution: if you chose another university first, do a JAMB change of institution to GOUNI. The form page says the admission is completed with a JAMB admission letter, so this step cannot be skipped.
  5. Fill the GOUNI form: open the admission form page on gouni.edu.ng, choose your course under the Faculty of Natural Science and Environmental Studies and submit. The form costs nothing for this faculty.
  6. Check your e-mail: GOUNI says the decision comes within three working days.
  7. Accept on CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, open Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS, and accept the offer. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains each status you may see.
  8. Pay and clear: pay the acceptance fee through the university’s own online payment platform only (GOUNI warns that payments into personal accounts are at your own risk), then print your JAMB admission letter for clearance.

How much is Biotechnology at GOUNI? (last published fees)

The newest GOUNI fee schedule I could find is the 2025/2026 session fees structure. The 2026/2027 schedule was not online when I checked, so use these figures to judge the size of the bill and expect some change for 2027/2028.

Item (2025/2026)AmountNote
Biotechnology tuition, first figure₦820,000Under the heading “Tuition and accommodation fees”
Other three yearly figures₦790,000, ₦740,000 and ₦750,000The schedule does not label which level each figure belongs to
Acceptance fee₦30,000100 level only
Matriculation fee₦20,000100 level only
Online course registration and ICT₦60,000Every level
Library fee₦20,000General charges
Parents’ Forum fee₦10,000General charges
Medical and drug test₦10,000100 to 300 level
Faculty and departmental fees₦5,000 and ₦3,000All faculties except Law

There are smaller charges as well, such as student affairs, sports, sanitation, entrepreneurship, health insurance and ID card fees. Tuition is paid per session: 60% in the first semester and the remaining 40% within three months of resumption. The other fees must be cleared before course registration. Biotechnology carries the same figures as Microbiology, Applied Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Industrial Chemistry and Physics. Ask the bursary what the tuition line covers, especially accommodation, before you budget.

Studying Biotechnology at GOUNI

Is GOUNI Biotechnology accredited?

  • GOUNI’s own statement: the accreditation page says all its programmes have NUC accreditation, without a list of programme results or dates.
  • Department page: GOUNI’s Biological Sciences course page (updated 5 October 2025) says the department’s B.Sc. programmes follow NUC’s minimum academic standards. It does not give an accreditation result for Biotechnology.
  • NUC publication: the NUC’s “Accreditation Results 1990 to 2025” document (September 2026) is online, but the copy I could read stops before universities starting with G, and a search of NUC’s report pages turned up no report naming this GOUNI programme.

Biotechnology was not on the 2021 list of 13 GOUNI programmes reported with full NUC accreditation, and I found no later result, good or bad. I am treating its NUC status as not confirmed. It is on GOUNI’s 2026/2027 form list and fee schedule, so it is running; ask the admissions office in writing about its accreditation before you pay tuition.

What you study

GOUNI’s B.Sc. Biotechnology handbook (2023 to 2028) sets 120 units for UTME entrants and 90 for Direct Entry. The first year is the common science year; biotechnology courses begin at 200 level.

LevelMain courses in GOUNI’s handbook
100 levelGeneral Biology, Chemistry and Physics I and II with practicals, Elementary Mathematics I and II, Introduction to Computing, Communication in English
200 levelIntroduction to Biotechnology, General Biochemistry I, General Microbiology I, General Genetics, Statistics for Biological Sciences, Introduction to Agricultural Biotechnology, Introduction to Industrial Biotechnology, Practical in Biotechnology
300 levelMolecular Genetics, Molecular Cell Biology, Genetic Engineering, Techniques in Biotechnology, Food Biotechnology, Plant and Animal Cell Tissue Culture, Bioinformatics, Coal Microbiology and Biotechnology, Industrial Attachment
400 levelBio-safety and Bioethics, Environmental, Medical, Industrial and Plant Biotechnology, Pharmaceutical Biotechnology, Forensic Biotechnology and Robotics, Biomass and Bioenergy, Biotechnology Entrepreneurship, Seminar, Research Project

The industrial attachment (BTG 399) is 12 weeks in the long vacation between 300 and 400 level. GOUNI’s own courses carry a GOU code, for example Coal Microbiology and Biotechnology, which ties into Enugu’s coal history, and Quality Control and Product Standardization.

Careers

Biotechnology graduates work in breweries, food and beverage plants, pharmaceutical and vaccine production, agricultural research institutes, diagnostic and molecular laboratories, and environmental clean-up projects. The degree is also a strong base for a master’s in molecular biology, genetics or bioinformatics, at home or abroad. Nigeria’s biotechnology agency and agricultural research institutes are among the public employers in this field.

Mistakes that cost Biotechnology applicants a GOUNI place

  • No Physics credit at O’level.
  • Three sittings when the handbook allows two.
  • Searching JAMB for “Agric Biotechnology” and giving up; the course shows as Biotechnology under Sciences.
  • Leaving GOUNI as second choice without a change of institution.
  • Missing the e-mail with the decision.
