ABSUTH School of Midwifery admission requirements for 2027/2028, based on the last published Abia advert, are five O’level credits in English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics at no more than two sittings, followed by a state entrance exam. The school is part of Abia State University Teaching Hospital (ABSUTH), Aba, and was one of three Abia schools named for the three-year Basic Midwifery programme in the state’s 2024 advert. No cut-off mark has ever been published for it.
2027/2028 update: ABSUTH School of Midwifery admission requirements and entrance process usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the rules on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest notices we could find (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.
There is a gap you should know about before you buy anything. Abia moved its 2026/2027 nursing intake to ND Nursing through the UTME and JAMB CAPS, but no 2026/2027 basic midwifery notice has appeared in any source I could reach, and nothing says whether midwifery will follow nursing into the JAMB system. This guide covers what is confirmed, what the 2024 midwifery process looked like, how I would prepare for both possible routes, and how to avoid fake form sellers.

Basic midwifery or post-basic midwifery: which one is for you?
ABSUTH’s midwifery page says the school trains both basic and post-basic midwifery students. The two are different entry routes.
| Point | Basic Midwifery | Post-basic Midwifery |
|---|---|---|
| Who it is for | School leavers with O’level credits | Nurses who are already registered |
| Length | 3 years (2024 Abia advert) | Shorter; the 2024 Abia notices did not give a figure for post-basic midwifery |
| Entry | O’level plus entrance exam (2024) | Nursing registration plus the state’s post-basic screening |
| This guide | Yes | Mentioned only for comparison |
If you are fresh from secondary school, you are applying for basic midwifery, or for ND Nursing if you want to become a nurse first and add midwifery later.
Does ABSUTH School of Midwifery require JAMB?
In 2024, no. The basic midwifery advert reprinted by Myschool on 26 February 2024 and by Studentship did not mention JAMB at all. Form sales started on Monday 26 February 2024, and the exam was set for late March 2024 (the exact dates are garbled in the reprints).
In 2026 the picture changed for nursing. The Abia State College of Nursing Sciences announced ND Nursing for 2026/2027 at Amachara and Aba campuses, with the 2026 UTME required and applications through JAMB CAPS. Midwifery was not part of that notice.
Here is how I would handle it. Register for the 2027 UTME with English, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. If basic midwifery stays outside JAMB, you have lost only the registration fee. If it moves into JAMB, or if you decide to take the ND Nursing route instead, you are already eligible. Missing the UTME is the mistake that cannot be fixed until the following year.
Cut-off mark and safe target
ABSUTH has never published a cut-off for midwifery, either for the UTME or for its entrance exam.
| Session | Figure | What it is | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026/2027 | 150 | JAMB minimum for colleges of nursing | Official, NAN, 11 May 2026 |
| 2025/2026 | 140 | JAMB minimum for colleges of nursing | Nairametrics headline, 8 July 2025 |
| Any year | Not published | ABSUTH midwifery cut-off | No official figure |
If midwifery admission goes through JAMB in 2027, JAMB’s minimum for colleges of nursing would be the floor. My advice is a UTME score of 180 or more and clean credits in all five O’level subjects. If the old entrance exam returns, treat it as a competitive test with no published pass mark, and revise English and the three sciences.
Subjects and documents you need
| Requirement | Detail |
|---|---|
| O’level subjects | English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, all at credit |
| Exams accepted | WAEC, NECO, NABTEB (NABTEB could not be combined with another exam in 2024) |
| Sittings | Maximum two |
| UTME subjects (if required) | Use of English, Biology, Chemistry, Physics (JAMB’s usual nursing combination; confirm on the e-brochure) |
| Documents at screening | O’level results, birth certificate or age declaration, local government identification and passport photographs (typical for Abia state schools; confirm in the notice) |
Women and men can both train as midwives in Nigeria, although most applicants are women. None of the Abia notices we found restricts entry by sex.
How the Abia basic midwifery entrance exam worked in 2024
ABSUTH did not run its own form. The Abia State Government advertised a joint Basic Midwifery intake for three schools: the School of Midwifery, Abiriba; the School of Midwifery, Amachara; and the ABSUTH School of Midwifery, Aba. The steps from the reprints were:
- Generate a Remita invoice: on the state nursing schools portal (abianursingschools.edu.ng) and pay.
- Fill the form: return to the portal with your RRR, complete the form and print the slip.
- Submit the slip: take a photocopy to the Nursing Services Department, Ministry of Health, Block B, New Secretariat, Umuahia.
- Choose a school: the advert listed the three schools; you indicated your preference.
- Write the exam: in late March 2024, then wait for the list.
The fee was not stated in either reprint.
Worked example (illustrative)
- Candidate: Adaeze, 18, has B3 English, C4 Mathematics, B2 Biology, C5 Chemistry, C6 Physics from WAEC and NECO.
- O’level check: five credits in the right subjects at two sittings, WAEC with NECO. She qualifies.
- UTME: she scored 174 in 2027 with English, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. That clears JAMB’s 2026 minimum of 150 by 24 marks, so she is covered if midwifery moves to CAPS.
- Weak spot: C6 in Physics. If an entrance exam includes Physics, that is where she should revise.
How to apply to ABSUTH School of Midwifery, step by step
- Get your JAMB profile code: send NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the phone line linked to your NIN.
- Register for the 2027 UTME: choose a nursing course with English, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. This keeps you eligible whether midwifery stays on the state portal or joins JAMB CAPS.
- Upload your O’level to CAPS: at an accredited CBT centre, have WAEC, NECO or NABTEB results added to your JAMB record. If you used two sittings, upload both. Check on CAPS that every subject and grade shows correctly.
- Watch for the official notice: look for an Abia State Ministry of Health basic midwifery advert or an update on absuthng.org. If the advert names the state portal, pay only through its Remita invoice; if it names CAPS, apply there.
- Accept the offer on CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, open Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS. Accept the offer and print your JAMB admission letter later.
- Pay acceptance and clear: the school or the Abia State Ministry of Health will give the acceptance fee, medical test and document checklist. None of these fees has been published officially, so pay only through the channel named in the official letter or portal.
Warning
Posts saying an Abia nursing or midwifery “form is out, call 070…” are run by agents, not the schools. The 2026/2027 ND Nursing intake went through JAMB CAPS, and older entrance forms were paid through a Remita invoice on the state portal. Never pay a private phone number or a personal account for a form, a “slot” or an admission list.
About the ABSUTH School of Midwifery
ABSUTH’s website says the School of Midwifery was established in 1936 and names its principal as Mrs Nnenaya Okorocha. It is part of the teaching hospital in Aba. The admission requirement and duration sections of the school’s web page were empty when we checked.
Accreditation
The NMCN’s December 2025 list shows the ABSUTH School of Post Basic Midwifery with full approval (September 2021). Basic midwifery at ABSUTH is not listed as a separate line. Compare the Abia schools:
| School (as NMCN lists it) | Programme | NMCN status, Dec 2025 list |
|---|---|---|
| College of Nursing, Umuahia | Nursing; Midwifery | Nursing: Full (Sept 2023). Midwifery: Full (Sept 2018) |
| College of Nursing, Amachara | Nursing; Midwifery | Nursing: Full (April 2018). Midwifery: Full (Sept 2021) |
| ABSUTH, Aba (nursing training institution) and School of Post Basic Midwifery | Nursing; Midwifery | Both Full (Sept 2021) |
| School of Post Basic Midwifery, Abiriba | Post Basic Midwifery | Provisional (Sept 2021) |
| School of Psychiatric Nursing, Aba | Psychiatric Nursing | Withdrawn; embargo placed on admission |
What midwifery students learn
- Anatomy and physiology of reproduction, normal pregnancy and antenatal care.
- Labour and delivery, care of the newborn and postnatal care.
- Complications of pregnancy and when to refer, family planning and community midwifery.
- NMCN qualifying examination for registration as a midwife at the end of the course.
Registered midwives work in hospital labour wards, primary health centres and maternity homes, and can later add nursing or public health qualifications.

Mistakes ABSUTH midwifery applicants make
- Buying a form from a phone agent: the 2024 form was a Remita invoice on the state portal.
- Applying for post-basic as a school leaver: post-basic is for registered nurses.
- Skipping the UTME: it keeps your options open if Abia moves midwifery to CAPS.
- Combining NABTEB with WAEC: the 2024 advert did not allow it.
- Waiting for a WhatsApp broadcast: the 2024 sales window opened and closed within weeks.
If you still need to register for the UTME, see when JAMB 2027 registration starts.
ABSUTH School of Midwifery: frequently asked questions
Is ABSUTH School of Midwifery form out for 2027/2028? Not as of 29 October 2026. No 2026/2027 or 2027/2028 basic midwifery advert had appeared in official or reliable sources.
Does ABSUTH School of Midwifery accept JAMB? The 2024 basic midwifery advert did not ask for JAMB. Because Abia’s 2026/2027 nursing intake moved to the UTME and CAPS, I would write the 2027 UTME to be safe.
How many years is basic midwifery at ABSUTH? Three years, according to the 2024 Abia State basic midwifery advert.
What is the price of ABSUTH midwifery form? No official fee has been published for 2026/2027, and the 2024 reprints did not state one. Pay only through the official portal invoice when the advert comes out.
Sources and updates
The NMCN approval statuses come from the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria’s list of approved schools (December 2025). The 2026/2027 ND Nursing requirements (Amachara and Aba campuses, five credits at no more than two sittings, age 16 by September 2026, 2026 UTME, JAMB CAPS) come from Myschool’s report of the Abia State College of Nursing Sciences notice (11 June 2026); the full official notice was not available to us, so fees and dates from it are not shown. The JAMB minimum of 150 for colleges of nursing and the 2026 admission deadlines come from the News Agency of Nigeria (11 May 2026). The 140 figure for 2025 is from a Nairametrics headline of 8 July 2025. The school’s founding year, principal and the basic and post-basic programmes come from ABSUTH’s School of Midwifery page. The 2024 Basic Midwifery advert (three schools, three years, Remita process, sales from 26 February 2024, late March exam) comes from Myschool’s reprint of 26 February 2024 and Studentship. The screening document list is typical practice, not a published ABSUTH list. Checked on 29 October 2026. This page will be updated when the 2027/2028 notice is out.
