School of Midwifery Abiriba Admission Requirements 2027/2028: Form, Entrance Exam and NMCN Status

School of Midwifery Abiriba admitted school leavers into three-year Basic Midwifery through the Abia State entrance exam, but NMCN lists Abiriba only for provisional post-basic midwifery. See the requirements, approval check and steps.

School of Midwifery Abiriba admission requirements, from the last Abia State advert that named it, are five O’level credits in English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics at no more than two sittings, then a state entrance exam for the three-year Basic Midwifery programme. There is no published cut-off. Before you apply, check one thing: the NMCN’s December 2025 list shows Abiriba only as a School of Post Basic Midwifery with provisional approval (September 2021), and has no basic midwifery line for it.

2027/2028 update: School of Midwifery Abiriba admission requirements and entrance process usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the rules on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest notices we could find (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.

That approval point matters more here than at any other Abia school. If you train at a school whose programme is not on the council’s list, you can struggle to sit the NMCN qualifying exam. Below are the requirements, the approval picture in plain terms, how the 2024 entrance process ran, my advice for 2027, the steps to follow and the fake-form warning signs.

NMCN approval: what the list says about Abiriba

Here are the Abia state nursing and midwifery schools as the council lists them:

School (as NMCN lists it)ProgrammeNMCN status, Dec 2025 list
College of Nursing, UmuahiaNursing; MidwiferyNursing: Full (Sept 2023). Midwifery: Full (Sept 2018)
College of Nursing, AmacharaNursing; MidwiferyNursing: Full (April 2018). Midwifery: Full (Sept 2021)
ABSUTH, Aba (nursing training institution) and School of Post Basic MidwiferyNursing; MidwiferyBoth Full (Sept 2021)
School of Post Basic Midwifery, AbiribaPost Basic MidwiferyProvisional (Sept 2021)
School of Psychiatric Nursing, AbaPsychiatric NursingWithdrawn; embargo placed on admission

Three points stand out for Abiriba:

  • The entry is for post-basic midwifery, the course for nurses who are already registered. The basic programme that school leavers apply for is not shown.
  • The status is provisional. The council’s notes say provisional approval lasts two years, and the list still carries the September 2021 date.
  • The 2024 state advert nevertheless named the School of Midwifery, Abiriba as one of three schools for basic midwifery, with Amachara and ABSUTH, Aba.

I cannot tell you from public documents whether Abiriba’s basic programme has an approval that is missing from the list. If you get an offer from Abiriba, ask the school or the Abia State Ministry of Health to show you its current NMCN approval for basic midwifery before you pay school fees. If they cannot, Amachara and ABSUTH both have full midwifery approval and were on the same 2024 advert.

Questions to ask before you accept an Abiriba offer

  1. Approval: which NMCN approval covers the basic midwifery programme, and what date is on it?
  2. Indexing: will the school index you with the NMCN as a student midwife?
  3. Clinical placements: which hospital will you train in for labour ward and antenatal practice?
  4. Fees: what is the official acceptance fee and school fee, and which account receives them?
  5. Transfer: if the programme’s approval lapses, what happens to students already admitted?

Write the answers down and keep any document the school gives you.

Does School of Midwifery Abiriba require JAMB?

Not in 2024. The basic midwifery advert reprinted by Myschool on 26 February 2024 did not mention JAMB. For 2026/2027, Abia moved nursing (not midwifery) to ND Nursing through the UTME and JAMB CAPS, and no midwifery notice followed in any source we reached.

I would write the 2027 UTME with English, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. It costs one registration fee and keeps you eligible if midwifery joins CAPS, or if you switch to ND Nursing at Amachara or Aba.

My target, as advice: a UTME score of 180 or more, and credits in all five subjects, ideally B3 or better in Biology and Chemistry. If the old entrance exam is used, your score in it decides, and no pass mark has been published.

How the 2024 Abiriba entrance exam process worked

Abiriba did not sell its own form. The Abia State Government ran one Basic Midwifery intake for Abiriba, Amachara and ABSUTH, Aba:

  1. Open the portal: abianursingschools.edu.ng, generate a Remita invoice and pay.
  2. Fill the form: return with your RRR, complete the form and print the slip.
  3. Submit a copy: take a photocopy of the slip to the Nursing Services Department, Ministry of Health, New Secretariat, Umuahia.
  4. Sit the exam: form sales opened on Monday 26 February 2024 and the exam followed in late March 2024.

The reprints did not give the form fee.

Worked example (illustrative)

  1. Candidate: Nkechi, 19, who lives near Abiriba, with credits in all five subjects from one NECO sitting.
  2. UTME: she also wrote the 2027 UTME and scored 168, which is 18 above the 2026 minimum for colleges of nursing.
  3. Choice of school: Abiriba is closest to her, but she lists Amachara as an alternative because of the approval question.
  4. Before paying fees: she asks to see Abiriba’s NMCN approval for basic midwifery.

How to apply to School of Midwifery Abiriba, step by step

  1. Get your JAMB profile code: send NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the phone line linked to your NIN.
  2. Register for the 2027 UTME: choose a nursing course with English, Biology, Chemistry and Physics so that you are covered if Abia moves midwifery to CAPS.
  3. Upload your O’level to CAPS: at an accredited CBT centre, have WAEC, NECO or NABTEB results added to your JAMB record. If you used two sittings, upload both. Check on CAPS that every subject and grade shows correctly.
  4. Watch for the official notice: watch for an Abia State Ministry of Health basic midwifery advert. Check that it names Abiriba and pay only through the invoice on the official portal it gives.
  5. Accept the offer on CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, open Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS. Accept the offer and print your JAMB admission letter later.
  6. Pay acceptance and clear: the school or the Abia State Ministry of Health will give the acceptance fee, medical test and document checklist. None of these fees has been published officially, so pay only through the channel named in the official letter or portal.

Warning

Posts saying an Abia nursing or midwifery “form is out, call 070…” are run by agents, not the schools. The 2026/2027 ND Nursing intake went through JAMB CAPS, and older entrance forms were paid through a Remita invoice on the state portal. Never pay a private phone number or a personal account for a form, a “slot” or an admission list. Posts about a “College of Nursing Sciences Abiriba 2026/2027” form on unrelated websites are agent spam.

About midwifery training at Abiriba

Abiriba is a town in Abia State, and its school is one of the state’s three midwifery schools named in the 2024 advert. Basic midwifery in Abia ran for three years. Students learn normal pregnancy and antenatal care, labour and delivery, newborn and postnatal care, family planning and community midwifery, then sit the NMCN qualifying exam.

Registered midwives work in labour wards, primary health centres and maternity homes. Many later train as nurses or move into public health.

Other Abia midwifery and nursing schools

Mistakes Abiriba applicants make

  • Not checking approval: the NMCN list shows only provisional post-basic approval for Abiriba.
  • Buying from spam sites: no 2026/2027 Abiriba notice exists in official sources.
  • Skipping the UTME: it is your insurance if the route changes.
  • Three sittings: the limit is two.
  • Choosing only one school: Amachara and ABSUTH were on the same advert.

For UTME dates, see when JAMB 2027 registration starts.
