Caritas University Sociology Cut-Off Mark 2027/2028 and Admission Requirements

Sociology at Caritas University needs at least 150 in the UTME, JAMB’s floor, not the 140 on its website. See JAMB subjects, the O’level credits Caritas insists on, Direct Entry, admission without post-UTME and NUC status.

The Caritas University cut-off mark for Sociology is 150 in the UTME for 2026/2027, because 150 is JAMB’s lowest admissible score for every Nigerian university this year. Caritas’s admissions page says candidates with “140 and above” can apply, but 140 to 149 sits below JAMB’s floor and cannot be admitted on JAMB CAPS. Caritas has published no separate Sociology cut-off and sets no written post-UTME test.

2027/2028 update: Caritas cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.

Sociology is on JAMB’s course list for Caritas University under that exact name, and Caritas lists it in its Faculty of Management and Social Sciences for 2026/2027. The NUC’s latest published result is Full accreditation, maturing in 2027, so the NUC is due to look at it again around then.

Sociology is one of the easier courses to qualify for on subjects, since JAMB accepts three Arts or Social Science subjects. The trap is at O’level. Caritas asks every candidate for credits in English and Mathematics, and its Faculty of Management and Social Sciences also names Economics. This page covers those rules, the 150 floor, a safe target score, Direct Entry, the no-test process and how Sociology compares with the other social science courses at Caritas.

140 or 150: which Caritas Sociology cut-off is right?

Caritas’s admissions page for 2026/2027 says candidates who scored “140 and above” can apply, whether or not they chose Caritas first. JAMB’s policy meeting of 11 May 2026 set 150 as the lowest UTME score any Nigerian university may admit with for the 2026/2027 session. A university may ask for more than 150 but never less.

The JAMB figure wins because of CAPS. Every admission has to go through JAMB’s Central Admissions Processing System, and JAMB has said admissions done outside CAPS are illegal. A candidate on 145 cannot be offered Sociology at Caritas on CAPS, so a 140 printed on the school’s website does not help.

Caritas has another admission notice on its website, headed for the 2025/2026 session, and its body still talks about a minimum score “in the 2019 JAMB UTME” and a closing date of 15 February 2025. That shows how much of the school’s admission text is carried forward from year to year. Treat 140 as an old Caritas number and 150 as the one that decides your admission.

Scored between 140 and 149?

  • Rewrite the UTME in 2027: aim well above 150 so the floor never becomes a question, and keep Caritas and the exact course name on your form.
  • Consider JUPEB at Caritas: the admissions page says JUPEB admission is open for 2026/2027. Good JUPEB passes can take you into 200 level by Direct Entry in a later session, without a UTME score. JAMB’s general Direct Entry rule for Sociology asks for two A’Level passes including Government or History, so pick JUPEB subjects that include one of them.
  • Look at a polytechnic ND: JAMB’s 2026/2027 minimum for polytechnics is 100. An ND followed by Direct Entry takes longer, but you keep moving. Social Development or Public Administration NDs are the usual polytechnic routes towards a social science degree; confirm Direct Entry acceptance with the university you want.

Blogs such as O3schools (January 2026) and Studentship repeat Caritas’s 140 and the absence of a written post-UTME test. None of them mentions JAMB’s 150 floor, and none gives a Sociology figure from an official Caritas source.

Safe target score for Caritas Sociology

Caritas does not publish how many people apply for each course or the lowest score it admitted last year. The bands below are my advice as an admissions adviser, based on how private universities in the South East fill courses like this one. They are not a Caritas rule.

Your UTME scoreMy read for Sociology at Caritas
Below 150Cannot be admitted on CAPS for 2026/2027
150 to 159Eligible. A place is realistic with the right subjects and O’level
160 to 179Comfortable
180 and aboveStrong, and enough to keep public universities in play

For the 2027 UTME I would aim for at least 160. Sociology rarely fills first at private universities, but a margin above the floor protects you if you also list UNN or ESUT, whose Sociology and Anthropology courses draw more applicants.

Caritas Sociology subject combination and O’level requirements

RequirementWhat applies to Sociology at Caritas
Course name to pick on JAMBSociology
UTME subjects (JAMB brochure)Use of English plus three Social Science or Arts subjects
Caritas remark on UTMENone; JAMB’s general rule applies
Combination I recommendEnglish, Government, Economics and one of Literature in English, CRS, History or Geography
O’level (JAMB brochure)Five credits in Government or History, English Language and three other subjects, with at least a pass in Mathematics
O’level (Caritas, all courses)Five credits including English Language and Mathematics, in not more than two sittings
O’level (Caritas Faculty of Management and Social Sciences)English, Mathematics, Economics and any other two subjects
Awaiting resultsAccepted if results will be available at resumption

Government and Economics in the UTME do double work: they are Social Science subjects for JAMB, and Economics matches the faculty’s O’level list. Your fourth subject can be an Arts subject such as Literature in English or CRS. JAMB’s general entry does not list Mathematics as a UTME subject for Sociology, so leave it out.

The O’level is where Caritas is stricter than JAMB. The brochure asks only for a pass in Mathematics, but Caritas’s own rule asks for a credit in Mathematics for every course. Put the two lists together and the safe set is credits in English, Mathematics, Economics, Government (or History) and one more subject.

Direct Entry into Sociology at Caritas

JAMB’s brochure has no Caritas remark for Sociology Direct Entry, so the general rule applies:

  • Two A’Level passes including Government or History.
  • JUPEB or IJMB passes in those subjects are usually treated like A’Level; confirm with Caritas.
  • NCE, ND or HND holders should ask Caritas in writing about Direct Entry; the general brochure line I read lists only the A’Level route.

Direct Entry candidates still register with JAMB, pick Caritas and the exact course name, and receive their offer on CAPS. If your previous school must confirm your result on JAMB’s e-Facility, push them early. Caritas cannot complete the admission until JAMB can see that result.

Is there a Caritas post-UTME for Sociology?

No. Caritas’s admission notice says there is no post-UTME screening test, and earlier notices and admission blogs say the same thing. Keep in mind that the notice is recycled text (it still refers to the 2019 UTME), so ask the admissions office to confirm the rule for your own session. The no-test policy has held for several years.

With no test, Caritas works from your file. It checks that your UTME score is at least 150, that your UTME subjects fit Sociology, that your O’level has the credits the faculty asks for, and that the result is uploaded on CAPS. The admissions page also says candidates who did not choose Caritas first can apply, and that candidates awaiting results can apply if the results will be out by resumption.

Worked example (illustrative)

Caritas has published no aggregate formula, and without a test there is nothing to add to your UTME score. What you can do is check your own file against each requirement. The two candidates below are made up to show how.

Chiamaka scored 172 with English, Government, Economics and CRS. Her WAEC shows B3 in English, C5 in Mathematics, C4 in Economics, B2 in Government, C6 in Literature in English and B3 in CRS, from one sitting.

  1. Score: 172 minus 150 = 22. She clears JAMB’s floor by 22 marks and sits in my comfortable band.
  2. UTME subjects: three Social Science or Arts subjects, as JAMB asks.
  3. O’level: credits in English, Mathematics, Economics and Government, plus two more.
  4. Verdict: her file meets every published rule once the O’level is on CAPS.

Obinna scored 163 with English, Government, Literature in English and CRS. His NECO has credits in English, Mathematics, Government, CRS and Literature, but an E8 in Economics. That meets JAMB’s general Sociology rule, yet Caritas’s faculty list names Economics. He should ask the admissions office in writing whether Sociology will take him without it, and resit Economics in the next WAEC or NECO if the answer is no.

How to apply for Sociology at Caritas University

  1. Create your JAMB profile: text NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the phone number linked to your NIN. JAMB replies with a profile code.
  2. Register for the UTME: choose Sociology at Caritas University and write English, Government, Economics and one Arts or Social Science subject. If you already picked another school first, Caritas says you can still apply, but you will need a JAMB change of institution so the offer can be made on CAPS.
  3. Check and print your result: you need 150 or more. Our guide on checking your JAMB result covers the steps.
  4. Upload your O’level on CAPS: go to a JAMB-accredited centre with your result details. Without the upload, Caritas cannot recommend you.
  5. Apply on the Caritas website: start from caritasuni.edu.ng/admissions. The page says 2026/2027 admission is open, but it does not show a form fee or a closing date, so confirm both with the admissions office (info@caritasuni.edu.ng) before you pay.
  6. Accept the offer on CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, open Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS, and accept when the offer appears. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains each status.
  7. Pay acceptance and school fees and clear: Caritas has not published 2026/2027 amounts. Get the official figures and the university’s own account details before paying anything.

JAMB set 30 November 2026 as the 2026/2027 admission deadline for private universities (News Agency of Nigeria, 11 May 2026). Caritas says its 2026/2027 admission is open, so any offer for this session has to show on CAPS before that date.

Fees are the biggest gap in what Caritas publishes. Its recent notice says fees were “recently revised” without listing amounts, and the fee tables that blogs reprint are from 2021/2022. The admissions page also links to the NELFUND student loan portal (portal.nelf.gov.ng); ask the bursary whether Caritas students can apply in your year.

Warning

Caritas does not set a written post-UTME test, so nobody can sell you a pass or a “slot”. A score below 150 cannot be fixed with money, and every genuine offer shows on your JAMB CAPS page. Pay fees only after confirming the amount and the account with the university.

Studying Sociology at Caritas University

Sociology sits in Caritas’s Faculty of Management and Social Sciences with Accounting, Banking and Finance, Business Administration, Public Administration, International Relations, Political Science, Mass Communication and Psychology, on the Amorji-Nike campus in Enugu. A Nigerian B.Sc. Sociology normally takes four years through the UTME; Caritas has not stated the duration on the pages I read.

What you study

  • Early years: introduction to sociology, social anthropology, introductory psychology and economics, and general studies.
  • Theory and method: classical and modern sociological theory, research methods and social statistics.
  • Fields of sociology: family, religion, deviance and criminology, industrial sociology, rural and urban sociology, gender and population studies.
  • Final year: a research project based on your own fieldwork, which is where survey and interview skills get tested.

Accreditation and professional approval

NUC: the NUC’s Accreditation Results 1990 to 2025 list Sociology at Caritas as Full, maturing in 2027. I did not find a separate NUC visit report for Caritas Sociology, so the score behind that result is not public.

Professional bodies: most jobs open to sociology graduates do not need a licence from a registration council, unlike architecture or estate surveying. If you plan to move into social work, human resources or teaching later, each of those has its own professional route, which you can take after the degree.

Careers after Sociology

  • Social research, survey work and monitoring and evaluation with NGOs, research firms and development agencies.
  • Human resources and industrial relations in companies and the public service.
  • Community development and social welfare work with government agencies and charities.
  • Policy, advocacy and media roles that need someone who can read social data.
  • Postgraduate study in sociology, criminology, demography or development studies.

For the UTME, Government and Economics past questions are the best use of your time, and Use of English counts in every score. If you are working through long reading lists, our guide to studying for long hours without losing focus may help.

Many candidates who search for Sociology at Caritas are also weighing Psychology, Political Science or Criminology. The table puts what JAMB’s course list, Caritas’s own 2026/2027 list and the NUC say side by side, because the three sources do not match for every course.

CourseOn JAMB’s list for CaritasOn Caritas’s 2026/2027 listLatest NUC result
SociologyYesYesFull, maturing 2027
PsychologyYesYesFull, maturing 2030
Political ScienceYesYesFull, maturing 2028
Public AdministrationYesYesFull, maturing 2027
Mass CommunicationYesYesFull, maturing 2030
International RelationsNoYesNo row found in the NUC compilation
Criminology and Security StudiesYesNoNo row found in the NUC compilation
EconomicsYesNoFull, maturing 2027

Two rows need care. Criminology and Security Studies and Economics appear on JAMB’s list for Caritas but not on the courses Caritas advertises for 2026/2027, so do not pick either for Caritas unless the admissions office confirms in writing that it is admitting into it. International Relations is the reverse: Caritas advertises it, but I could not find it on JAMB’s list, so you could not choose it on your UTME form under that name.

If you like Sociology because of crime, policing or social problems, Sociology itself covers criminology and deviance as courses, and its JAMB entry is the confirmed one at Caritas. If you are drawn to how individuals think and behave, Psychology is the closer fit and has the longer NUC maturity date.

Mistakes Sociology applicants make at Caritas

  • Planning with 140: any score below 150 cannot be admitted on CAPS in 2026/2027.
  • Choosing Criminology and Security Studies for Caritas: it is on JAMB’s list for Caritas but not on the courses Caritas advertises for 2026/2027. Pick Sociology unless Caritas confirms otherwise in writing.
  • Writing “Sociology and Anthropology”: that is the course name at UNN and ESUT. At Caritas the JAMB name is plain Sociology.
  • No credit in Mathematics or Economics: JAMB’s general rule is lighter, but Caritas asks for a Mathematics credit for every course and names Economics for this faculty.
  • No O’level on CAPS: a good score without an uploaded result stalls your file.
  • Paying for a “slot”: there is no test to help you pass. Real offers show on your CAPS page.
  • Stopping after CAPS acceptance: acceptance fee, clearance and course registration at Caritas are separate steps.

Sources and updates

Caritas University’s admissions page and faculty pages (read on 30 October 2026) give the “140 and above” figure, the open 2026/2027 session, the rules for candidates who did not choose Caritas first and for awaiting results, and the faculty O’level list. The no-test rule and the references to the 2019 UTME and a 15 February 2025 closing date come from Caritas’s notice headed for the 2025/2026 session, signed by the Registrar, M. I. Onwuka. The 150 minimum, the rule that admissions must go through CAPS and the 30 November 2026 deadline for private universities come from the News Agency of Nigeria report of 11 May 2026. The course name is from JAMB’s course list for Caritas University and the subject and Direct Entry rules from the JAMB brochure entry for Sociology, both reprinted by Myschool. NUC status is from the NUC Accreditation Results 1990 to 2025, published in September 2026. The safe target scores and the worked examples are my own advice. Checked on 30 October 2026. This page will be updated when Caritas publishes its 2027/2028 admission notice.
