The Renaissance University Biochemistry cut off mark is 150 in the UTME. Renaissance University (RNU), Ugbawka, publishes one minimum score for every programme it runs in 2026/2027, and that minimum is the same as JAMB’s national minimum for universities. RNU has not published a separate, higher figure for Biochemistry.
2027/2028 update: RNU cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.
Biochemistry is one of RNU’s laboratory sciences in the Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences, next to Microbiology and Industrial Chemistry. It appears on RNU’s own programme list and on JAMB’s course list for RNU under the same name, so the path is simple. This page sets out the official figures, a safe target score (my advice), the subject combination, Direct Entry, screening, fees and the CAPS steps.
Is Biochemistry on RNU’s JAMB course list?
Yes. It is on both lists that decide whether RNU can admit you into it: RNU’s own programme list and JAMB’s course list for RNU.
| Check | Result for Biochemistry | Where I checked |
|---|---|---|
| RNU’s current programme list | Listed | RNU undergraduate page, Direct Entry page and tuition schedule (checked 30 October 2026) |
| JAMB course list for RNU | Listed as “Biochemistry” | Myschool’s reprint of JAMB’s institution course list (checked 30 October 2026) |
| Name to register on JAMB | Biochemistry, with Renaissance University as first choice | Pick the exact name JAMB’s portal shows under RNU |
When you register, choose Renaissance University first and then pick Biochemistry from the course drop-down that JAMB shows for RNU. If the name on the portal ever looks different from the one above, use the portal’s version, because CAPS matches you by that exact course.

RNU Biochemistry cut-off history
| Session | Figure | What it is | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026/2027 | 150 | RNU minimum JAMB score for every programme, including Biochemistry | Official (RNU undergraduate page, FAQ and admission announcement) |
| 2026/2027 | 150 | JAMB national minimum for universities | Official (JAMB policy meeting, 11 May 2026) |
| 2026/2027 | Not published | Separate departmental cut-off for Biochemistry | RNU says some programmes may need more than 150 but gives no figure |
| 2025/2026 | Not confirmed | RNU figure for that session | Blogs print numbers, but I found no RNU notice behind them |
RNU was not on the list of institution cut-offs announced at JAMB’s 2026 policy meeting, so its own pages are the only official source for the 150. The 2026/2027 announcement also says candidates who scored 150 or more in the 2023 and 2024 JAMB examinations can apply. That line looks carried over from an older notice, so if you plan to use an old UTME result, ask Admissions before you pay anything.
Safe target score for Biochemistry at RNU (my advice)
This is my judgement as an admissions adviser. RNU has not published these bands.
| Your UTME score | My read for Biochemistry at RNU |
|---|---|
| Below 150 | Not eligible for RNU this session |
| 150 to 169 | Eligible. Fair chance if all five O’level credits are in place |
| 170 to 199 | Comfortable |
| 200 and above | Strong, and it keeps public universities open as a backup |
Biochemistry has no professional council quota of the kind Nursing and Law have, so at a private university the deciding factors are usually the 150 minimum, a clean O’level and the fees. RNU’s FAQ still warns that some programmes may need more than 150, so I would aim for 180 or more and keep a public university such as ESUT in mind if your score is high.
UTME subject combination and O’level for RNU Biochemistry
| Requirement | Biochemistry at RNU |
|---|---|
| UTME subjects | Use of English, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics or Mathematics (JAMB brochure) |
| O’level (RNU table) | Five credits including English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology |
| O’level (JAMB general) | Five credits in English Language, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics and Biology |
| RNU remark in the brochure | Five credits at not more than two sittings |
| Awaiting results | No RNU rule published; ask Admissions |
| Post-UTME | None published |
RNU’s table and JAMB’s general line ask for the same five credits here, so there is no conflict to worry about. Physics is the subject people forget: you can skip it in the UTME by taking Mathematics instead, but you still need a Physics credit at O’level for RNU.
Some universities accept Agricultural Science in place of Biology for Biochemistry. RNU is not one of them in the brochure remarks, and its own table names Biology, so plan on Biology.
Direct Entry into Biochemistry at RNU
RNU’s Direct Entry page lists Biochemistry among the programmes open to Direct Entry. It gives one set of rules for all courses:
| Qualification | RNU’s stated minimum |
|---|---|
| A’level (Cambridge, JUPEB or IJMB) | At least two passes in relevant subjects |
| ND or HND | At least Lower Credit from a recognised institution |
| NCE | At least merit in a related field |
| Also required | O’level result, passport photographs and JAMB Direct Entry registration for the current year |
JAMB’s general Direct Entry line for Biochemistry asks for two A’level passes chosen from Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics and Biology, or an NCE, ND or HND in a related programme along with the UTME subject requirements. The brochure carries no RNU remark on Direct Entry for this course, so RNU’s own page above is the rule to follow. If you hold an ND in Science Laboratory Technology, ask Admissions which level you would enter.
Does RNU write Post-UTME for Biochemistry?
RNU’s official pages describe a free online application and a document check. None of them mention a Post-UTME test, a screening fee or an aggregate formula. The Direct Entry page says applicants may be asked to attend an interview or bring more documents, so treat any call from Admissions seriously. Every offer still has to go through JAMB CAPS, which means your score, subjects and uploaded O’level must all line up.
Worked example (illustrative)
RNU has no published aggregate, so this example checks eligibility and the money needed before resumption, using RNU’s own figures. Take Chiamaka, who scored 176 with English, Biology, Chemistry and Physics, and has credits in English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology across two WAEC sittings.
- Score check: 176 minus 150 = 26. She clears RNU’s minimum by 26 marks.
- UTME check: Biology, Chemistry and Physics match JAMB’s line for Biochemistry.
- O’level check: five required credits in two sittings, which RNU allows.
- Money before resumption on three instalments: 50% of ₦1,800,000 = ₦900,000, plus ₦50,000 acceptance = ₦950,000.
- Money before resumption on four instalments: 40% of ₦1,800,000 = ₦720,000, plus ₦50,000 acceptance = ₦770,000.
Tobi scored 190 with Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics, but his O’level has no Physics credit. His score is better than Chiamaka’s, yet he falls short of RNU’s table. He would need to sit Physics in a GCE or NECO external exam and add it before clearance.
RNU Biochemistry acceptance fee and school fees
| Item | Biochemistry at RNU | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Application fee | None | RNU FAQ and tuition schedule |
| Acceptance fee | ₦50,000 | RNU FAQ and tuition schedule |
| Session fee | ₦1,800,000 | RNU tuition schedule; the 2026/2027 announcement gives ₦1,800,000 for programmes it doesn’t name separately |
| What it covers | Tuition, accommodation and three meals a day | RNU tuition schedule and FAQ |
| Instalments | Three (50%, 20%, 30%) or four (40%, 20%, 20%, 20%) | RNU FAQ |
| Hostel | Compulsory; no more than three to a room; no cooking | RNU FAQ |
Biochemistry is in RNU’s ₦1,800,000 band with Microbiology, Industrial Chemistry, Industrial Physics, Nursing and Law. The computing degrees and Medical Laboratory Science are cheaper at ₦1,600,000, and History and International Studies and Mass Communication sit at ₦1,500,000. The tuition schedule doesn’t name a session, so confirm the current figure with the Bursar before you pay.
Your chances of getting Biochemistry at RNU
RNU is a private university and does not publish applicant numbers or admission totals by course. From how private universities in the South East usually fill science places, a candidate with 150 or more, the five credits and the means to pay normally stands a fair chance. That is my reading of the market, not an RNU statistic.
Biochemistry, Microbiology and Medical Laboratory Science share Biology and Chemistry in the UTME, and many candidates who wanted Medical Laboratory Science or Nursing end up considering Biochemistry. If you would accept either, tell Admissions so they can advise on a change of course on CAPS if one programme fills.
JAMB set 30 November 2026 as the 2026/2027 admission deadline for private universities, as reported by the News Agency of Nigeria on 11 May 2026. That date belongs to the current cycle. For 2027/2028, JAMB will set a fresh date at its next policy meeting, so register early and keep RNU as first choice.
How to apply for Biochemistry at RNU, step by step
- Get your JAMB profile code: send NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the line linked to your NIN.
- Register the right subjects: Use of English plus Biology, Chemistry, and Physics or Mathematics. Choose Renaissance University first and pick Biochemistry. If you chose another school, RNU says you must do a JAMB change of institution before it can admit you.
- Upload your O’level to CAPS: RNU lists this as part of its own process, and its on-campus JAMB CBT centre handles O’level upload, change of institution and CAPS acceptance for a small charge.
- Fill the RNU online form: go to rnu.edu.ng/admissions/regular_admission and choose Biochemistry. There is no application fee, and you can also apply in person at the Admissions Office in Ugbawka.
- Answer any follow-up from Admissions: keep your phone on. RNU publishes no test, but it may ask for an interview or more documents.
- Accept the offer on CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, open Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS. Accept only when the offer shows RNU and Biochemistry. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains each status.
- Pay acceptance and the first instalment: ₦50,000 acceptance, then the first instalment of the session fee. Pay only into the university account shown on rnu.edu.ng and confirm with the Bursar.
- Clear with your documents: O’level result, four passport photographs, JAMB result, birth certificate, local government identification letter or certificate of origin, NIN slip, fee receipts, and A’level result for Direct Entry.
Warning
RNU charges no application fee. Anyone who asks you to pay for an RNU form, or promises a guaranteed Biochemistry slot for money, is not acting for the university. A genuine offer shows on your JAMB CAPS page, and fees go only into the account shown on rnu.edu.ng, confirmed with the Bursar.
Studying Biochemistry at Renaissance University
Biochemistry is a B.Sc. in RNU’s Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences. RNU is in Ugbawka, Nkanu East Local Government Area of Enugu State, about five minutes from ESUT’s Agbani campus, and the NUC licensed it in 2005. UTME entrants normally spend four years on a Biochemistry degree in Nigeria; RNU’s pages don’t state the duration.
On accreditation, RNU’s pages say its courses are accredited by the NUC but don’t give a result for each course. I searched the NUC’s published programme reports and found none that names RNU for Biochemistry, and the NUC’s 1990 to 2025 results file can’t be read as far down as RNU. In June 2024 the NUC fully re-accredited five RNU programmes (Law, Economics, History and International Studies, Computer Science and Accounting), according to a Myschoolnews report of 30 July 2024; Biochemistry was not one of them. So the NUC status of Biochemistry at RNU is not confirmed here. Ask Admissions for it in writing before you pay acceptance.
What you study
- Foundations: general chemistry, biology, physics and mathematics in the first year.
- Core biochemistry: proteins and enzymes, carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, bioenergetics and nucleic acids.
- Applied areas: molecular biology, clinical and nutritional biochemistry, pharmacology basics and toxicology.
- Lab work and final stages: analytical techniques, industrial training (SIWES) and a research project.
That outline is how Biochemistry degrees in Nigeria are usually built; RNU has not published its own course list.
Careers
Graduates work in hospital and diagnostic laboratories (alongside licensed laboratory scientists), pharmaceutical and food companies, quality control, research institutes and teaching. Many use Biochemistry as a base for a master’s degree, and some later apply for graduate entry into Medicine where a university allows it.

Mistakes that cost Biochemistry applicants an RNU place
- No Physics credit: RNU’s table asks for it even if you took Mathematics in the UTME.
- Agricultural Science in place of Biology: RNU’s table names Biology.
- Three or more sittings: RNU accepts at most two.
- Paying an agent for a form: RNU’s form is free.
- RNU not first choice: fix it with a change of institution before RNU starts proposing admissions.
- Accepting on CAPS and stopping there: acceptance fee and clearance at Ugbawka still follow.
