UNN Cut-Off Mark for Medicine and Surgery 2027/2028: Requirements and Admission Odds

UNN Cut-Off Mark for Medicine and Surgery 2027/2028: Requirements and Admission Odds
UNN’s 2026/2027 screening minimum is 160, but Medicine admits far higher. See the official figures, a safe target score, one-sitting O’level rules, a worked aggregate example and CAPS steps.

The UNN cut off mark for Medicine and Surgery for 2026/2027 has not been published as a separate figure. What UNN did publish is a general minimum: you needed 160 or more in the 2026 UTME, with UNN as your first choice, to apply for its 2026/2027 screening. At the JAMB policy meeting in May 2026, UNN’s declared minimum was reported as 200. Neither number is the score that gets you into Medicine.

2027/2028 update: UNN cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.

Medicine is the most competitive course at the University of Nigeria, and the candidates admitted sit far above both figures. Below you will find what is official, a safe target score (clearly marked as my advice), the UTME and one-sitting O’level rules UNN applies to Medicine, how ranking is estimated with a worked example, the CAPS steps, and what the six-year MBBS at the Enugu campus involves.

The two numbers do two jobs. UNN accepts screening applications from 160, but the benchmark it declared at the 2026 JAMB policy meeting was 200, and competitive courses admit far above both. Treat 160 as the gate that lets UNN look at your file. For Medicine, that gate tells you almost nothing about your chances.

JAMB has also said that institutions may set higher requirements for competitive courses. UNN has not announced a separate Medicine minimum for 2026/2027, so any site quoting an “official” UNN Medicine cut-off of 280 or 300 for this session is guessing.

UNN Medicine cut-off history

This is every figure I could trace for Medicine at UNN, with what each one actually means.

2025/2026310 to 320Blog estimate for Medicine “based on trends”Unofficial estimate; scale unclear

The last row comes from an education blog that labels its numbers as estimates and does not say whether they are UTME scores or aggregates. I include it only because you will meet it on other sites. It is not a UNN cut-off, and cut-offs move every year with the number and quality of applicants.

Safe target score for Medicine at UNN (my advice)

This section is advice, not a UNN rule. Medicine has the most applicants of any UNN course and a limited number of places, because the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria regulates how many students each medical school can train. That combination pushes the lowest admitted score high.

Your 2026 UTME scoreMy honest read for UNN Medicine
Below 200Eligible to be screened (from 160), but no realistic chance in Medicine. Consider another course or another try.
200 to 259Very unlikely on merit. Expect a CAPS offer for a different course at best.
260 to 289Possible only with excellent O’level grades and catchment or ELDS help. Risky.
290 to 309Competitive, especially with strong O’level grades.
310 and aboveStrong position. This is where I would want a candidate to be.

If you are planning for 2027, I would aim for 300 or more in the UTME and A1 or B2 grades in all five O’level science subjects. That target matches the unofficial blog estimate and gives you room if the cut-off rises.

Merit, catchment and ELDS

Federal universities are widely reported to fill places under a national guideline of 45% merit, 35% catchment and 20% for educationally less developed states (ELDS). UNN has not published its own split for any course, so treat this as the national policy, not a UNN figure.

  • Merit: the top scorers in the course, whatever their state of origin. This is the list to aim for.
  • Catchment: UNN has not published a catchment list online. It is generally understood to be the South-East states; confirm on JAMB CAPS or with UNN admissions before you rely on it.
  • ELDS: a federal designation. UNN does not publish its own list, so don’t assume your state qualifies because a blog says so.
  • State of origin: the state on your JAMB profile is the one that counts, and UNN asks for an LGA identification letter to prove it.

For a course as crowded as Medicine, I would plan to win on merit. Catchment and ELDS places can lower the score that gets in for some candidates, but you can’t see the numbers in advance.

UTME subject combination and O’level requirements for UNN Medicine

RequirementMedicine and Surgery at UNN
UTME subjectsUse of English, Physics, Chemistry, Biology
O’level subjectsFive credits: English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology
Number of sittingsOne sitting only (UNN remark in the JAMB brochure)
Physics with ChemistryUNN accepts Physics with Chemistry, taken as a single subject, for Physics and Chemistry
Direct EntryA’level passes in Physics, Chemistry and Biology or Zoology (general brochure requirement)
Minimum age16 by 30 September of the admission year (UNN 2026/2027 notice)

The one-sitting rule is where many good candidates lose out. Five credits spread over WAEC and NECO may be fine for other UNN courses, which accept two sittings, but the brochure entry says UNN’s Medicine requirement should be at one sitting. Check the JAMB brochure entry for Medicine and Surgery (reprinted on Myschool) and your own JAMB profile before you register.

A credit means C6 or better, but a C6 in Chemistry will pull your ranking down. If you have time to resit before your next UTME, improving one science grade is often cheaper than finding ten more JAMB marks.

Direct Entry into Medicine

The general brochure entry lists A’level passes in Physics, Chemistry and Biology or Zoology for Direct Entry. UNN’s 2026/2027 notice told DE candidates who chose UNN first to register for screening as well, and said A’level results must be verified through NIPEDS. Direct Entry places in Medicine are few, so ask the College of Medicine before you plan around that route.

How UNN screening and aggregate work for Medicine

UNN’s 2026/2027 screening notice was issued on 13 July 2026. These are the details that applied to every course, Medicine included (read the full notice on unn.edu.ng).

DetailUNN 2026/2027 screening

Registration windowWednesday 15 July 2026 to midnight, Wednesday 5 August 2026 (closed)
Fees₦2,000 application plus ₦3,300 processing (₦5,300 in all), paid through Remita

Results awaitingNot accepted. Candidates waiting for Nov/Dec 2026 GCE or NECO results were not eligible
AgeCandidates under 16 by 30 September 2026 were told not to apply
Written testNone described in the notice; it is an online screening registration
Documents uploadedBirth certificate, LGA identification, testimonial, First School Leaving Certificate, JAMB result slip, O’level result(s), each under 100KB

UNN has not published a formula for ranking candidates. Its 2026/2027 notice describes no written test, and the 2025/2026 advert notice mentioned a separate “Screening” score with a 160 threshold without saying how that score is built. So any aggregate you see online, including the one below, is an estimate.

The method most UNN guides use is 60% of your UTME score plus 40% of your O’level score, with four O’level subjects graded A1 = 100, B2 = 90, B3 = 80, C4 = 70, C5 = 60 and C6 = 50. This is a commonly cited blog method, not an official UNN formula. It is still useful, because it shows how much your O’level grades can move you up or down against someone with the same JAMB score.

Worked example for a Medicine candidate

Take Chioma, who scored 300 in the UTME and has A1, A1, B2 and B3 in four relevant O’level subjects.

  1. UTME part: 300 × 0.6 = 180.
  2. O’level points: 100 + 100 + 90 + 80 = 370.
  3. O’level part: 370 × 0.4 = 148.
  4. Estimated aggregate: 180 + 148 = 328 out of 400.

Now give her classmate Emeka the same O’level grades and a UTME score of 280. His estimate is 168 + 148 = 316. Twenty JAMB marks became twelve aggregate points. If Emeka had A1 instead of B3 in one subject, his O’level total would rise by 20 points and his aggregate by 8. That is the practical lesson of the method: in a course this tight, one O’level grade can matter as much as several UTME marks.

Remember that UNN has not confirmed any of these weights. Use the example to compare yourself with other candidates, not to predict an exact cut-off.

How to apply for Medicine at UNN, step by step

  1. Get your JAMB profile code: text NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN (for example NIN 12345678901) to 55019 or 66019 from the phone number linked to your NIN. JAMB replies with the profile code you need to buy the UTME form.
  2. Register the UTME correctly: pick Use of English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology and make UNN your first choice. UNN’s 2026 screening was open only to first-choice candidates, so a second-choice UNN gets you nothing.
  3. Upload your O’level to CAPS: get your WAEC or NECO result onto your JAMB profile as soon as it is out. In 2026 UNN wanted it on JAMB CAPS and on its own portal by 5 August.
  4. Register for UNN screening: go to unn.edu.ng, click UNN Portal (top right), then Prospective Students and the screening form. Enter your JAMB registration number, generate the invoice and pay through Remita, then come back, re-enter the number and fill your personal and O’level details, including exam centre and exam numbers.
  5. Upload and submit: upload each document as a file under 100KB, review the form, confirm and print the acknowledgement slip. Check your date of birth before you submit, because UNN says it cannot be changed afterwards.
  6. Check and accept on CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, choose Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS and Admission Status. Accept the offer once you have read the course name, then print your JAMB admission letter.
  7. Pay UNN’s acceptance fee and clear: blogs report the acceptance fee as ₦25,000, but UNN’s 2026/2027 notices I read do not state it. Confirm the amount on the UNN portal before paying, then follow the clearance instructions there.

Deadline

JAMB told public universities to finish 2026 admissions on or before 31 October 2026, and candidates have four weeks to accept an offer on CAPS. If UNN has offered you a place, accept it on CAPS now.

If CAPS shows a status you don’t understand, our JAMB CAPS guide explains each one, and the CAPS SMS guide covers what to do when the 55019 text fails. If you plan to sit the UTME again, start with when JAMB 2027 registration starts.

Studying Medicine and Surgery at UNN

Medicine and Surgery at UNN leads to the MBBS degree and takes six years. The College of Medicine is on the Enugu campus (UNEC), and clinical training is linked to the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH) at Ituku-Ozalla.

  • Early years: foundation sciences, then the basic medical sciences: human anatomy, physiology and medical biochemistry. The college’s online platform lists Human Anatomy, Human Physiology and Medical Biochemistry under its School of Basic Medical Sciences.
  • Middle years: pathology, pharmacology and community medicine, with the move into clinical work.
  • Clinical years: rotations through medicine, surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology and the other specialties at the teaching hospital, ending in final professional exams.
  • After graduation: a year of housemanship and registration with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria before independent practice, then options such as residency training, public health or research.

If Medicine looks out of reach this year, the related UNN courses below share most of the same UTME subjects. Many candidates who miss Medicine end up in one of them, and some build careers in research or diagnostics from there:

For UTME preparation, our JAMB Biology syllabus and JAMB Chemistry syllabus list every topic the exam can test.

Mistakes that cost Medicine applicants a UNN place

  • Two sittings: UNN’s Medicine remark asks for one sitting. A combined WAEC and NECO result may not be considered.
  • Treating 160 or 200 as safe: those numbers let you apply. Admitted Medicine candidates score much higher.
  • Choosing UNN second: the 2026 screening was for first-choice candidates only.
  • Awaiting results: UNN did not accept awaiting results in 2026. Your O’level had to be out and uploaded.
  • Ignoring a Transfer Approval: if UNN offers you another course on CAPS, decide quickly; the four-week window still applies.
  • Paying an “admission agent”: genuine offers appear on JAMB CAPS. Nobody can sell you a Medicine place.

UNN cut off mark for Medicine: frequently asked questions

Can I study Medicine in UNN with 250 in JAMB? A score of 250 clears UNN’s 160 screening minimum, so you can be screened, but on past competition it is very unlikely to be enough for Medicine on merit. I would expect a CAPS offer for a related course at that score, if any.

Does UNN accept two sittings for Medicine and Surgery? The UNN remark in the JAMB brochure says Medicine requirements should be at one sitting. Other UNN courses accept up to two sittings.

Can I use awaiting result for UNN post-UTME? No. UNN’s 2026/2027 notice said candidates awaiting Nov/Dec GCE or NECO results were not eligible, and results had to be uploaded to CAPS and the UNN portal by 5 August 2026.

Does UNN write a post-UTME exam for Medicine? UNN’s 2026/2027 notice describes an online screening registration with document uploads and no written test date. Watch the official notice each year in case this changes.
