UW-Madison Engineering Graduate Admission 2027 for International Students: Ranking, GRE, Funding and Deadlines

UW-Madison Engineering Graduate Admission 2027 for International Students: Ranking, GRE, Funding and Deadlines
UW-Madison’s College of Engineering (No. 27 in U.S. News 2026) charges $75 plus $6 to apply, does not require the GRE in most departments, waives nonresident tuition for PhD assistants and charges $12,027 per semester in 2026-27 nonresident tuition. Here are fall 2027 deadlines, stipends and tips.

UW-Madison engineering graduate admission for international students runs through the Graduate School’s online application: a $75 fee plus a $6 international processing fee, which covers up to three programmes for the same term. You need the equivalent of a 3.00 GPA on your last two years of undergraduate work, three recommendation letters, a statement of purpose, a CV and unofficial transcripts. The GRE is not required in Electrical and Computer, Mechanical, Biomedical, Chemical and Biological, or Civil and Environmental Engineering, and Industrial and Systems Engineering stops requiring it from fall 2027.

For English, the Graduate School wants TOEFL 5.0 (92 on tests before 21 January 2026), IELTS 7.0 or Duolingo 125, unless your bachelor’s degree was taught only in English. PhD students are usually funded through assistantships that waive both resident and nonresident tuition and pay at least $37,417 a year (annual research appointment, 2026-27). Nonresident graduate tuition is $12,027.20 per semester in 2026-27, far below the private schools ranked near it. Most fall 2027 engineering deadlines fall on 1 or 15 December 2026. I checked these details on UW-Madison pages on 29 October 2026.

UW-Madison engineering ranking

In the U.S. News 2026 Best Graduate Schools edition (Best Engineering Schools, released 7 April 2026), the UW-Madison College of Engineering is ranked No. 27 in the United States, not tied, as reported by VnExpress International on 9 April 2026. As a public university, it charges nonresident graduate tuition of about $24,000 a year, against $65,210 at Princeton and $66,784 at Rice, the two private schools tied just above it.

Departments and graduate degrees

The College of Engineering admits graduate students in these departments:

  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Chemical and Biological Engineering
  • Civil and Environmental Engineering
  • Electrical and Computer Engineering
  • Industrial and Systems Engineering
  • Materials Science and Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Nuclear Engineering and Engineering Physics

Most departments offer a PhD and a research MS (thesis or research based), and several also run course-based or online master’s options through the college’s professional development arm. The research MS pages I checked list about 30 credits and roughly two years. Industrial Engineering’s research MS has concentrations in operations research and analytics, health systems engineering, human factors, advanced manufacturing, and industrial AI engineering.

GRE policy by department

ProgrammeGRE
Electrical and Computer Engineering (PhD and MS)Not required
Mechanical Engineering (PhD and MS)Not required; scores not used
Biomedical Engineering (PhD)Not required
Chemical and Biological Engineering (PhD)Not required
Civil and Environmental Engineering (research MS)Not required
Industrial and Systems EngineeringConsidered if available but not required from fall 2027

The Graduate School itself does not require the GRE. If your programme wants it, the ETS institution code is 1846.

English language requirements

TestFull admissionConditional admission (with programme approval)
TOEFL iBT, tests from 21 January 20265.04.5
TOEFL iBT, tests before 21 January 20269280 to 91
IELTS (including IELTS Indicator)7.06.5
Duolingo English Test125115 to 124

Scores must be less than two years old on the first day of your intended term, and you cannot combine scores from different tests. Conditionally admitted students take an English assessment (ESLAT) on arrival and must complete any recommended ESL course in their first semester.

You meet the requirement without a test if you:

  • earned a bachelor’s degree from an accredited US institution
  • earned a US master’s, PhD or professional degree within five years of your start date
  • earned the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree from a non-US institution where English is the only language of instruction, stated on your transcript or otherwise verified
  • completed at least two full-time semesters of graded coursework in English at an accredited institution within five years of your start date (English-language classes do not count)

That third route covers most graduates of Nigerian, Ghanaian and Kenyan universities. If your transcript does not state the language of instruction, ask your registrar for a letter. ECE says exemptions are applied automatically after you submit, so you do not file a waiver request. Note that Biomedical Engineering students who submitted a test score must take the SPEAK oral test in their first semester, and ECE requires international non-native speakers who want TA posts to pass it too.

Application fee and fee waivers

The fee is $75, plus a $6 processing fee for international applicants, and one payment covers up to three programmes for the same entry term. The Graduate School’s own fee grants are only for US citizens and permanent residents. Some programmes run their own fee grants that are not restricted by legal status:

  • Chemical and Biological Engineering offers waivers to domestic applicants, international students already enrolled at a US institution, and Fulbright Scholars; email the department before you submit.
  • ECE does not offer fee grants to general applicants.
  • Civil and Environmental Engineering does not waive fees, but a faculty member may give you a fee voucher.
  • Biomedical Engineering says its fee cannot be waived or deferred.

Deadlines for fall 2027 entry

Most department pages give the day and month without a year, so the dates below are the next occurrence for fall 2027. Chemical and Biological Engineering confirms 1 December 2026 (noon CST) for fall 2027.

ProgrammeFall 2027 deadlineOther terms
Electrical and Computer Engineering (PhD and MS)1 December 2026No spring or summer entry
Biomedical Engineering (PhD)1 December 2026Spring: 1 September
Chemical and Biological Engineering (PhD)1 December 2026, noon CSTSpring entry rarely offered
Industrial Engineering (research MS)1 December 2026No spring or summer entry
Mechanical Engineering (PhD and research MS)15 December 2026Spring: 1 September
Civil and Environmental Engineering (research MS)15 December 2026Late applications to 15 March if space remains

Industrial Engineering enforces its deadline strictly, and every document, including transcripts and English scores, must be in by then.

Deadline warning

ECE, Biomedical, Chemical and Biological, and Industrial Engineering close on 1 December 2026. Mechanical Engineering also expects you to have a faculty adviser lined up before or during your application, so start emailing professors now.

PhD funding and stipend

UW-Madison funds most PhD students through research, teaching or project assistantships and fellowships. Any assistantship at 33% or more (over 13 hours a week) in one appointment brings tuition remission for both resident and nonresident tuition, health and dental insurance at a reasonable premium, and paid leave. In fall 2025, 85% of doctoral students held appointments that qualified for tuition remission.

Appointment (2026-27 minimum, 50%)AnnualAcademic year
Research assistantship$37,417$30,614
Project assistantship$37,417$30,614
Teaching assistantshipNot listed$30,614
University fellowship (100%)$37,417$30,614

These are campus minimums, effective 28 June 2026 for annual appointments and 17 August 2026 for academic-year ones, and many programmes pay more. At department level:

  • Chemical and Biological Engineering gives admitted PhD students a five-year financial guarantee.
  • ECE gives every PhD student a support package at admission, which may combine assistantships and fellowships.
  • Mechanical Engineering considers applicants for department fellowships automatically, and research assistantships come through faculty.

Segregated fees are not covered by tuition remission. The 2026-27 tuition schedule lists them at $849.74 per semester.

Master’s funding reality

ECE tells admitted MS applicants to plan to fund themselves, since TA funding is limited. Civil and Environmental Engineering says admission does not guarantee funding and faculty make funding offers directly. Mechanical Engineering keeps fellowships and research assistantships for thesis-based MS students. So a research MS student who finds a 33% assistantship can have tuition waived, but you should not count on it when you apply.

Tuition and cost of attendance 2026-27

Item (2026-27, full-time graduate)Per semesterPer year (two semesters)
Nonresident tuition$12,027.20$24,054.40
Segregated fees$849.74$1,699.48
Nonresident total$12,876.94$25,753.88

The tuition schedule shows no separate engineering surcharge for Madison. For living costs, the only 2026-27 graduate budget I found is the one UW-Madison publishes for visiting international students, which estimates $14,980 per semester ($29,960 a year) for living expenses. Use it as a rough guide for your I-20 planning; the International Student Services office confirms the amount you must show after admission. Online and accelerated programmes use different pricing and are not eligible for assistantship tuition remission.

Named fellowships for international students

UW-Madison’s University fellowships pay at least $37,417 a year at a 100% appointment, and departments nominate admitted students for them. Mechanical Engineering considers every applicant for its departmental fellowships with no extra form. The pages I checked do not name engineering fellowships limited to, or closed to, international students. International Student Services keeps a funding and scholarships page for international students, and Fulbright Scholars get an application fee waiver in Chemical and Biological Engineering.

STEM OPT

Engineering degrees normally appear on the US Department of Homeland Security STEM designated degree list, which lets F-1 graduates add a 24-month STEM OPT extension after the first 12 months of OPT. Check the CIP code on your I-20.

Application documents

  • Graduate School application and, for ECE, a supplemental form naming your research area and proposed faculty adviser
  • Statement of purpose: 1,000 words or fewer in CEE, a recommended two pages in Mechanical Engineering, two to three pages in 11-point type in Chemical and Biological Engineering
  • Three letters of recommendation, uploaded by your recommenders as PDFs; letters do not carry over between applications
  • Unofficial transcripts uploaded as PDFs. Official transcripts are requested by email only after a programme recommends you for admission. Non-English documents need an official translation, and a WES or similar evaluation cannot replace that translation.
  • CV or resume
  • A brief video recording for ECE applicants
  • English scores unless exempt

Report your grades on your own institution’s scale. The Graduate School asks you not to convert them to a 4.00 scale.

How to contact potential PhD advisers

Departments differ. Chemical and Biological Engineering says you do not need to contact faculty before applying, because a committee admits students and advisers are matched in September and October after arrival. Mechanical Engineering is the opposite: you must secure a faculty adviser before or during the application. ECE asks you to name a proposed adviser on its supplemental form, and CEE says you may contact faculty before or after applying.

For ME and ECE, write to two or three professors whose recent papers match your interests. Keep it short and specific.

Sample opening (for illustration): “Dear Professor [Surname], I graduated in mechanical engineering from the University of Nairobi, where my final-year project modelled heat transfer in a solar dryer for maize. Your group’s work on thermal energy storage is close to what I want to study, and I am applying to the UW-Madison ME PhD for fall 2027. Are you taking new students for that term?”

How to write the statement of purpose for UW-Madison

Chemical and Biological Engineering gives the clearest guidance, and it works for any department. Cover your past research and what came out of it (papers, posters, reports), your future interests, why you want a PhD and why UW-Madison fits, your academic preparation including challenges you have overcome, and what you would add to the department community. Name the faculty you most want to work with and explain why. If your GPA is near the 3.0 minimum, address your results in the courses that matter for the programme. Keep within the length your department sets, since they range from two pages to 1,000 words.

Common mistakes international applicants make

  • Converting your CGPA. UW-Madison asks for grades on your own scale. A second class upper on a 5-point scale should be reported as it is.
  • Paying for WES. The Graduate School does not ask for it at application, and an evaluation cannot replace an official translation.
  • Missing the adviser step in Mechanical Engineering. You need a faculty adviser lined up.
  • Assuming a Duolingo score of 115 is enough. 125 is the full-admission minimum; 115 to 124 only qualifies for conditional admission with programme approval.
  • Three-year degrees. The Graduate School wants a degree comparable to a US bachelor’s and has a country-by-country guide in its requirements page. Check your country’s entry before applying.
  • Late documents for Industrial Engineering. Its deadline covers transcripts and test scores too.

Costs not covered

  • The $81 application total ($75 fee plus $6 international processing)
  • Segregated fees of $849.74 per semester, even with tuition remission
  • Health insurance premiums
  • The SEVIS I-901 fee and US visa fee
  • Winter clothing; Madison winters are long and cold
  • Summer living costs if you hold an academic-year appointment

Who should apply

Apply for a PhD if you have a research direction and, for Mechanical Engineering, can find a willing adviser before you submit. Apply for a research MS if you can fund about $25,800 a year in tuition and fees plus living costs, and you are prepared to chase an assistantship once you arrive. I would aim for the 1 December dates even in departments that close on 15 December, so a late transcript does not sink the application.
