Michigan engineering graduate admission for international students runs through two doors. MS, MSE and PhD applicants apply through the Rackham Graduate School, and M.Eng. and D.Eng. applicants use a separate College of Engineering portal. The Rackham application fee is $90 for international applicants, and Rackham fee waivers are only for US citizens and permanent residents. GRE scores are no longer part of admission for Rackham doctoral programmes, and Mechanical Engineering does not use them for master’s applicants either. You can skip the English test if your whole degree was taught in English, which covers many applicants from Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and other English-medium systems.
PhD students at Michigan Engineering get full funding: a tuition waiver, a monthly stipend and health insurance, usually committed for four to six years. Master’s students mostly pay their own way, at about $33,714 per term in tuition and required fees for a nonresident engineering student in fall 2026. For fall 2027, PhD deadlines run from 1 December 2026 to 5 January 2027, and most master’s deadlines are 15 January 2027. All details were checked on University of Michigan pages on 29 October 2026.
Michigan Engineering ranking
In the U.S. News 2026 Best Graduate Schools edition (Best Engineering Schools, released 7 April 2026), Michigan Engineering, the College of Engineering at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, is ranked No. 12 in the United States, not tied. Fifteen departments and programmes list their own graduate deadlines.
Departments and graduate degrees
Michigan Engineering offers the MS and MSE (research or coursework master’s), the M.Eng. (professional), the D.Eng., and the PhD. The departments and programmes that admit graduate students include:
- Aerospace Engineering
- Applied Physics
- Biomedical Engineering
- Chemical Engineering
- Civil and Environmental Engineering
- Climate and Space Sciences and Engineering
- Computer Science and Engineering
- Electrical and Computer Engineering
- Engineering Education Research
- Industrial and Operations Engineering
- Macromolecular Science and Engineering
- Materials Science and Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering
- Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering
- Robotics
Mechanical Engineering alone reports 468 graduate students from 24 countries, so you will not be the only international student in your cohort.
GRE policy
Rackham says GRE general scores are no longer part of admission for its doctoral programmes. Some master’s programmes still ask for them, so check your department’s page. Mechanical Engineering says it does not require the GRE for the PhD or for master’s applicants, and scores are not used in review. If a programme does want the GRE, the institution code is 1839 and scores are valid for five years.
English language requirements
Michigan Engineering accepts the TOEFL, IELTS and the Michigan English Test (MET). Its graduate application page does not list Duolingo, so do not rely on it unless your department says otherwise.
| Test | Minimum (Mechanical and Civil and Environmental Engineering pages) |
|---|---|
| TOEFL iBT | 84 |
| IELTS | 6.5 |
Rackham notes that some programmes set higher requirements, and scores are valid for two years. Official scores must reach Michigan before your programme’s deadline.
English test exemption
You are exempt if you completed your undergraduate or graduate degree at an institution where all instruction is in English, finished before Michigan classes start. A one-year graduate degree or a research-only master’s with no classes does not qualify. If your transcript does not state the language of instruction, upload a letter on letterhead from your registrar. You claim the exemption yourself in the application, and Rackham checks it if you are recommended for admission.
Application fee and fee waivers
The Rackham fee is $75 for US citizens and permanent residents and $90 for international applicants. Rackham’s fee waiver programme is open only to US citizens and permanent residents. Some graduate programmes run their own waivers, so ask your department’s graduate coordinator before you pay.

PhD funding at Michigan Engineering
The College of Engineering says PhD students receive full funding that includes a tuition waiver, a monthly living stipend and health insurance. Rackham describes the funding commitment in more detail: full tuition, fringe benefits and 12 months of stipend for a set period, typically four to six years, stated in your offer letter, as long as you stay in good academic standing. Mechanical Engineering calls its PhD fully funded.
The most recent College of Engineering stipend memo we could find is for 2024-25. It set the half-time graduate student instructor and research assistant rate at $13,769 per four-month term, or $41,308 for three terms (12 months). Rates are adjusted every year, so your 2027-28 offer should be higher. Funding packages can mix fellowships, research assistantships and teaching posts, and the college encourages students to apply for outside fellowships early.
Master’s funding reality
The college describes master’s funding as limited. Some departments have fellowships or instructor and research posts, but most international MS, MSE and M.Eng. students pay tuition and living costs themselves. Ask your department directly and start early.
Tuition for 2026-27
Michigan charges graduate tuition per term. The fall 2026 (fiscal year 2027) tuition table lists these Engineering rates, including required fees:
| Engineering rate (per term, fall 2026) | Resident | Nonresident (international) |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-candidate (MS, MSE, PhD before candidacy) | $18,065 | $33,714 |
| Professional | $18,555 | $34,266 |
| PhD candidate | $10,378 | $10,378 |
Two terms of nonresident pre-candidate tuition come to about $67,428 for the academic year. The University’s Office of Financial Aid publishes the living-cost budget used for your I-20, and Rackham asks for proof of funding only after you are offered admission.
Named fellowships open to international students
Michigan Engineering lists doctoral and master’s fellowships on its scholarships site, but the pages we checked do not say which are open to international students. In practice, departments nominate admitted PhD applicants for internal fellowships. Outside Michigan, look at your government’s scholarship schemes and country programmes such as Fulbright, run through US embassies and commissions.
STEM OPT
Engineering degrees normally appear on the US Department of Homeland Security STEM designated degree list, which allows a 24-month STEM OPT extension after the first 12 months of OPT. Check the CIP code on your I-20 for your exact programme.
Application documents
- Statement of purpose: one to three pages on your academic and research background, career goals, and fit with the programme.
- Personal statement: a separate essay of 500 words or fewer about the path that led you to graduate study.
- Three letters of recommendation: ideally from faculty who know your classroom and lab work.
- Transcripts: front and back pages, with certified translations of anything not in English. Rackham says your degree must be equivalent to a US bachelor’s and come from an institution recognised by your country’s education ministry or higher education commission.
- English scores or exemption: as above.
- Financial documents: do not send them with your application. Rackham asks for proof of funding only after an admission offer, and documents sent earlier are not kept.
How to contact potential PhD advisers
Department committees decide PhD admission, and funding packages often include research assistantships paid from a professor’s grants, so a short contact before December is worth the effort. Read two or three recent papers from the lab, then email the professor with your background, a specific link between their work and yours, and a direct question about whether they are recruiting for fall 2027.
Sample opening (for illustration): “Dear Professor [Surname], I am a mechanical engineering graduate of Obafemi Awolowo University, and my final year project studied fatigue cracking in welded steel joints. Your group’s recent work on additive manufacturing defects connects closely to this, and I am applying to the Michigan ME PhD for fall 2027.”
Attach a short CV. One follow-up after two weeks is enough.
How to write the statement of purpose and personal statement for Michigan
Michigan asks for two essays, and they should not repeat each other. The statement of purpose is the technical document: start with the research area you want to work in, give evidence from your projects or publications with your exact role, name Michigan faculty whose work fits, and close with your career goal. Keep it within three pages.
The personal statement is shorter and is about you: the experiences that led you to graduate study, such as building a solar system for your village clinic or teaching yourself programming on a shared laptop. Keep it under 500 words and connect it to what you will bring to the department.
Common mistakes international applicants make
- Paying for Duolingo. Michigan Engineering lists TOEFL, IELTS and MET.
- Missing the English exemption. If your degree was fully taught in English, you may not need a test, but you need a transcript or registrar letter that says so.
- Sending bank statements with the application. Rackham discards them; wait until you are admitted.
- Converting your CGPA yourself. Upload your transcript with your university’s own grading scale and class of degree.
- Using the wrong portal. M.Eng. applications do not go through Rackham.
- Three-year degrees. Rackham requires a degree equivalent to a US bachelor’s. Most African engineering degrees run four or five years, but holders of three-year degrees should ask before applying.
- Missing the 1 December PhD dates in Mechanical, Biomedical and Chemical Engineering and Robotics.
Costs not covered
- The $90 application fee per programme and test fees
- The SEVIS I-901 fee and US visa application fee
- Flights and the first month in Ann Arbor before your stipend starts
- Winter clothing for Michigan
- Books, a laptop and conference travel not paid by your lab
- Living costs for self-funded master’s students on top of about $67,428 tuition

Who should apply
Apply for the PhD if you have a clear research direction, strong grades and some research or project evidence; the funding commitment covers tuition, insurance and 12 months of stipend. Apply for a master’s only if you can fund roughly $67,000 a year in tuition plus Ann Arbor living costs. I would submit master’s applications in December anyway, so a late test score or transcript problem does not cost you the January deadline.
