Princeton Engineering Graduate Admission 2027 for International Students: Ranking, GRE, Funding and Deadlines

Princeton Engineering Graduate Admission 2027 for International Students: Ranking, GRE, Funding and Deadlines
Princeton SEAS (No. 25, tied, in U.S. News 2026 engineering) funds every engineering PhD student, charges a $75 application fee, does not accept the GRE in MAE and Computer Science, and does not admit self-funded M.Eng. students. Here are fall 2027 deadlines, 2026-27 stipends and costs, and application tips.

Princeton engineering graduate admission for international students is mostly about the PhD. The School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS) funds every engineering PhD student, about 870 of them, with tuition, health cover and a stipend for the whole programme. Its master’s options are small, and the M.Eng. does not admit self-funded students at all. You apply through the Princeton Graduate School, pay a $75 application fee (hardship waivers exist), and send three recommendation letters, a statement of academic purpose and unofficial transcripts.

The GRE is out in some departments and optional in the rest: Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and Computer Science do not accept GRE scores, while Civil and Environmental, Chemical and Biological, and Electrical and Computer Engineering list it as optional. If your undergraduate degree was taught entirely in English and your university certifies that, you are exempt from the English test, which covers most applicants from Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and other English-medium systems. For fall 2027 entry, deadlines fall between 1 and 30 December 2026. I checked every figure here on Princeton pages on 29 October 2026.

Princeton engineering ranking

In the U.S. News 2026 Best Graduate Schools edition (Best Engineering Schools, released 7 April 2026), Princeton’s School of Engineering and Applied Science is ranked No. 25 in the United States, tied with Rice University’s George R. Brown School of Engineering and Computing. NJBIZ and VnExpress International both reported the No. 25 tie in April 2026. For an international applicant, the funding model matters more than the number, because every engineering PhD place here comes with full support.

Departments and graduate degrees

SEAS has six departments, and some graduate programmes run through its institutes:

  • Chemical and Biological Engineering (PhD, M.S.E., M.Eng.)
  • Civil and Environmental Engineering (PhD, M.S.E., M.Eng.)
  • Computer Science (PhD, M.S.E.)
  • Electrical and Computer Engineering (PhD, M.Eng.)
  • Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (PhD, M.S.E., M.Eng.)
  • Operations Research and Financial Engineering (PhD)
  • Programmes through the Omenn-Darling Bioengineering Institute, the Princeton Materials Institute and the Princeton Quantum Initiative, including Bioengineering, Materials Science and Engineering, and Quantum Science and Engineering

The PhD takes about five years. The M.S.E. is a research master’s with a thesis (two years in MAE and CEE, 1.5 or 2 years in CBE). The M.Eng. is a one-year coursework degree for practising engineers. You do not need a master’s before the PhD; MAE says most of its PhD applicants come straight from a bachelor’s degree. MAE also says its programmes are not step programmes, so if you apply only for the PhD and are turned down, you will not be considered for the M.S.E.

One rule catches people out. MAE’s admissions page says you may apply to only one department or programme per admission year, so choose your department carefully.

GRE policy by department

Mechanical and Aerospace EngineeringNot accepted
Computer ScienceNot required or accepted
Civil and Environmental EngineeringOptional, not required
Chemical and Biological EngineeringOptional, not required
Electrical and Computer Engineering (PhD)Optional, not required
Operations Research and Financial EngineeringCheck the department’s Graduate School listing

If your department does not accept the GRE, do not send it. Where it is optional, I would only send a score that clearly helps, such as a strong quantitative result from an applicant whose transcript is weak in mathematics.

English language requirements

The Graduate School accepts the TOEFL, IELTS and the Duolingo English Test (DET) and has no Graduate School minimum score, though departments can set their own. Scores expire two years after the test date, and from the fall 2026 cycle onward a score only counts if it is still valid on the day the application opens (15 September). The TOEFL institution code is 2672, with no department code.

You are exempt from the test if:

  • English is your primary language, meaning the language you use most often and in most situations
  • your undergraduate instruction was entirely in English, as certified by your institution, and your degree is awarded before you enrol
  • you completed at least two academic years of full-time graduate study taught entirely in English, as certified by the institution

Computer Science is stricter for its M.S.E.: it exempts only applicants from, or who studied in, the US, UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand or Anglophone Canada, and it wants a TOEFL Speaking score of at least 28 (IELTS Speaking 8) from master’s applicants. Its admitted PhD students averaged 108 on the TOEFL iBT over the last two seasons.

Even exempt students may face an English test on arrival. Anyone with TOEFL Speaking below 27, IELTS Speaking below 8.0 or DET Conversation below 125 must take Princeton’s assessment when they enrol.

Application fee and fee waivers

The application fee is $75, as listed on the Graduate School pages for MAE, CEE and CBE. Fee waivers are available for financial hardship, and MAE says hardship waivers are open to any applicant. You can also get a waiver code through past or present programme participation or by attending a recruiting event. Request the waiver in the application before you submit, because an application cannot be submitted without payment or an approved waiver.

Deadlines for fall 2027 entry

The Graduate School’s deadline page still shows the fall 2026 cycle, whose dates fell in December 2025. The table below gives the same dates one year later for fall 2027 (based on this year’s date; confirm on the official page when the call opens). All deadlines are 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time.

ProgrammeDeadline
Bioengineering1 December 2026
Chemical and Biological Engineering1 December 2026
Materials Science and Engineering1 December 2026
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering1 December 2026
Plasma Physics1 December 2026
Computer Science15 December 2026
Electrical and Computer Engineering (PhD)15 December 2026
Quantum Science and Engineering15 December 2026
Civil and Environmental Engineering30 December 2026
Electrical and Computer Engineering (M.Eng.)30 December 2026
Operations Research and Financial Engineering30 December 2026

Admission is for the fall term only. Computer Science sends files to the department in mid-January, and admitted applicants hear by the end of February. ECE often interviews short-listed PhD applicants before deciding and emails decisions by mid-February.

Deadline warning

Bioengineering, Chemical and Biological Engineering, Materials, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and Plasma Physics close on 1 December 2026, a month before Civil and Environmental Engineering. Book your English test early so the score arrives in time.

PhD funding and stipend

Every engineering PhD student at Princeton is funded for the length of the programme. The Graduate School’s 2026-27 financing plan lists these rates:

Award (2026-27)Amount
Natural Sciences and Engineering First Year Fellowship (10 months)$46,200
Summer fellowship or research assistantship (2 months)Up to $9,240
Research assistantship (10 months)$46,200
Teaching assistantship (10 months)$48,510
12-month PhD stipend range (Graduate School support page)$52,680 to $55,440

Funding also covers tuition ($65,210 for regular enrolment in 2026-27) and the Student Health Plan, which the Graduate School says is free for about 97% of graduate students. In CEE every admitted PhD student gets a first-year fellowship. Computer Science says its awards cover tuition, the health fee and a stipend for the 10-month year, with summer support decided separately. Princeton also encourages you to apply for outside fellowships such as your government’s scholarships.

Master’s funding reality

This is where Princeton differs from most US engineering schools. The M.Eng. in MAE, CEE, CBE and ECE does not admit self-supporting applicants. Admitted candidates must show full outside funding, usually from an employer or an external fellowship, because Princeton gives no institutional money for the M.Eng.

The M.S.E. is different by department. CBE says M.S.E. applicants typically have employer or fellowship support. CEE says research or teaching assistantships may be available. Computer Science says master’s students are normally offered teaching assistantships when available, but non-native English speakers must first pass the University’s English screening. SEAS describes master’s places overall as a small number of slots.

Tuition and cost of attendance 2026-27

Item (2026-27)Amount
Tuition, regular enrolment$65,210
Student Health Plan fee$4,220
Housing (12 months, single student)$17,040
Food$10,925
Personal expenses$9,365
Books and supplies$2,440
Total cost of attendance (12 months)$109,200

For a funded PhD student, tuition and the health fee are paid by the award, and the stipend covers the $39,770 living budget with some margin.

Named fellowships for international students

The Gordon Wu Fellowship goes to the most outstanding incoming engineering doctoral students and is awarded at admission, so there is no separate form. The Graduate School page lists a full first-year fellowship covering tuition and the base stipend, a $3,000 grant at the start of the year, and a $5,000 supplement in each of years one to five. The page does not restrict it by nationality, but it also does not state that international students qualify, so treat that as unconfirmed. Outside Princeton, look at Fulbright awards run through US embassies and commissions, and at your own government’s scholarship schemes.

STEM OPT

Engineering degrees normally sit on the US Department of Homeland Security STEM designated degree list, which gives F-1 graduates 24 months of STEM OPT after the first 12 months of OPT. Check the CIP code on your I-20 for your exact programme.

Application documents

  • Statement of academic purpose: what you want to work on and how your background prepares you.
  • Three letters of recommendation: registered in the application and sent to the Office of Graduate Admissions, not the department.
  • Transcripts: unofficial copies are fine at application. If your university does not grade on a 4.0 scale, Computer Science asks you to add a GPA statement. Admitted students send final transcripts and proof of degree before registering. The pages I checked do not ask for a WES or other credential evaluation.
  • Research interests: MAE asks you to choose two research areas; CBE asks you to name up to five faculty members.
  • English scores or exemption: as above.
  • Proof of funding (M.Eng. only): evidence of full outside funding.

How to contact potential PhD advisers

Princeton’s ECE department openly tells applicants to reach out to professors whose work interests them and to be ready to discuss research opportunities. CBE asks you to name up to five faculty in the application, so you need a shortlist anyway. Read two recent papers from each lab, then send a short email: who you are, one specific link between their work and yours, and whether they expect to take students for fall 2027.

Sample opening (for illustration): “Dear Professor [Surname], I graduated in chemical engineering from the University of Ibadan, where my final-year project measured catalyst deactivation in a small fixed-bed reactor. Your group’s recent paper on catalyst stability under cycling conditions connects closely to this, and I plan to apply to the CBE PhD for fall 2027.”

Attach a one-page CV, keep the email under 200 words, and send at most one follow-up.

How to write the statement of purpose for Princeton

ECE’s advice is plain: say what you hope to work on and explain how your background prepares you. Start with the research problem, not your childhood. Then give two or three pieces of evidence, such as a final-year project, an internship or a paper, with your own role and results stated clearly. Name Princeton faculty and explain the fit in specifics. ECE adds that a weakness in one area can be offset by excellence in others, especially strong fundamentals, so if your grades dipped in one year, explain it briefly and point to stronger later work. Close with what you want to do after the PhD.

Common mistakes international applicants make

  • Applying for a self-funded M.Eng. Princeton will not admit you without full outside funding.
  • Applying to two departments. MAE says you may apply to only one department or programme per admission year.
  • Sending GRE scores to MAE or Computer Science. Neither accepts them.
  • Letting test scores expire. Scores must still be valid on the day the application opens.
  • Converting your CGPA yourself. Report your own scale (for example, a Nigerian 5-point CGPA with your class of degree) and add a short GPA statement.
  • Assuming a three-year degree is fine. The pages I checked do not address three-year degrees, so email the Graduate School before applying if yours is one.
  • Missing the 1 December dates in CBE, MAE, Bioengineering, Materials and Plasma Physics.

Costs not covered

  • The $75 application fee unless you get a waiver, plus test fees
  • The SEVIS I-901 fee and the US visa application fee
  • Flights to New Jersey and your first weeks before the first stipend payment (Princeton says incoming students may get a partial advance)
  • Winter clothing
  • Summer living costs if your summer support is not confirmed
  • Dependants’ health cover, which is subsidised but not free

Who should apply

Apply for the PhD if you have a clear research direction, strong grades, and project or research work you can describe in detail. Admitted PhD students are funded, so the competition is for the place itself. Apply for the M.Eng. only if an employer or a fellowship will pay the full cost. If you want a self-funded taught master’s, Princeton is the wrong school, and a programme such as Columbia’s or Penn’s fits better.
