Princeton University admission requirements for international students are the same as for Americans, with one extra step for some applicants: if English is not your first language and your school does not teach in English, you send a TOEFL, IELTS Academic, Duolingo or PTE Academic score. Everyone applies through the Common Application with Princeton’s own questions, a graded written paper, a school report, a counsellor letter and two teacher recommendations. The SAT and ACT are optional for fall 2027 entry.
Princeton is need-blind for international students and meets the full need of every admitted student with grants, with no loans in the package. The catch is the admit rate: in the Class of 2029, Princeton admitted 250 of 10,897 international applicants, about 2.3%, against 4.4% overall. The Single-Choice Early Action deadline for fall 2027 is 1 November 2026 and the Regular Decision deadline is 1 January 2027. All figures below were checked on Princeton’s own pages on 29 October 2026.
Princeton admission requirements for international students: key facts

Princeton ranking
Princeton is ranked #2 among National Universities in the U.S. News 2027 edition, released on 22 September 2026. That ended a run of roughly 15 years at #1; MIT took the top place, with Harvard third and Yale fourth.
For an applicant the ranking matters less than the funding rules. Princeton is one of very few universities that combine need-blind admission for international students with grant-only aid.
Princeton acceptance rate and class profile
Princeton’s official profile gives full figures for the Class of 2029 (entered fall 2025). It is unusual in splitting out international applicants, which shows how much harder the international pool is.
| Class of 2029 | All applicants | International applicants |
|---|---|---|
| Applied | 42,303 | 10,897 (25.8% of all applicants) |
| Admitted | 1,868 | 250 (13.4% of admits) |
| Acceptance rate (calculated) | About 4.4% | About 2.3% |
| Enrolled first-years | 1,408 | 199 (14.1% of the class) |
Princeton’s Common Data Set for 2024-25 gives a middle-50% SAT range of 1500 to 1560 and an ACT range of 34 to 35 for students who submitted scores. The Class of 2030, which arrived in September 2026, has 1,414 first-years from 48 states and 63 countries; 19% are the first in their family to attend college and 71% receive financial aid.
Princeton tuition for international students in 2026-27
International students pay the same price as US students. This is Princeton’s 2026-27 student budget.
| Cost item (2026-27) | Amount |
|---|---|
| Tuition | $68,140 |
| Fees (activities fee and class dues) | $314 |
| Housing | $13,010 |
| Food | $9,110 |
| Books, course materials and equipment | $1,050 |
| Personal expenses | $3,000 |
| Total cost of attendance | $94,624 |
| Travel (not in the total) | $50 to $5,000 |
Students without a family health plan that works in the US must buy Princeton’s Student Health Plan. Princeton does not list that price in the budget, so ask the aid office.
Princeton scholarships for international students: how aid works
Princeton’s “scholarships” are need-based grants. The aid office works out what your family can pay from income, assets and the number of siblings in college, and fills the rest of the cost with grant money you never repay.
- 71% of the Class of 2030 qualified for aid.
- The average grant for an aid student in 2026-27 is estimated at about $83,000.
- Aid recipients paid an average of $7,574 for tuition, fees, housing and food.
- For a typical US family with one child in college, income up to $150,000 means a $0 family contribution. Princeton bases its examples on US families, but the same method applies to international families.
- 89% of recent seniors graduated with no debt.
- Aid is renewed each year as long as you still show need; you reapply annually.
Because Princeton is need-blind for everyone, asking for aid does not reduce your chance of admission. If your family cannot pay the full cost, apply for aid. Our list of the best American scholarships for international students covers the other universities with similar promises.
Aid forms and deadlines
Princeton uses its own form. You open it after you submit the admission application.
| Aid document | SCEA deadline | RD deadline |
|---|---|---|
| Princeton Financial Aid Application (finaidapp.princeton.edu) | 9 November 2026 | 1 February 2027 |
| Parents’ 2025 tax return or income documents | 9 November 2026 | 1 February 2027 |
| Noncustodial parent form or waiver request (if parents are separated) | 9 November 2026 | 1 February 2027 |
The FAFSA is only for US citizens and eligible non-citizens. If your parents do not file taxes, send whatever official income proof exists, such as salary letters, and translate it into English.
Testing policy for fall 2027
Princeton is test-optional for students entering in fall 2027, so you can apply without the SAT or ACT. If you do submit, use SAT code 2672 or ACT code 2588, and take the test by October for early action or December for regular decision. Testing becomes required again for fall 2028 entry.
Should you send a score? If it sits inside or above the 1500 to 1560 SAT range, I would send it. A lower score can still help if your school has few advanced courses and the score shows what you can do. If you cannot reach a test centre, leave it out and let your grades and external exams carry the file.
English requirements
You must send an English test if English is not your native language and your school does not teach in English. Princeton accepts the TOEFL (code 2672), IELTS Academic, Duolingo English Test and PTE Academic. You are exempt if English is your native language or you spent at least three years at a secondary school where English is the main language of teaching, which covers most students from Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and other English-medium systems.
Princeton publishes no minimum score. Send the result by the application deadline: 1 November 2026 for early action and 1 January 2027 for regular decision.
Application parts and Princeton supplemental essays
- Common Application: personal essay, activities and school details.
- Princeton-specific Questions: the essays below, plus your interview opt-out choice and Arts Supplement plans.
- Graded written paper: a marked paper with the teacher’s comments, in English.
- Transcript and School Report: internal grades, external exams (WAEC, IGCSE, A-Level, IB or national exams) or both, judged within your own system. No GPA conversion is needed.
- Counsellor recommendation and two teacher recommendations. If your school has no counsellor, a principal or vice principal can complete the forms.
- Midyear report, unless your school gives no midyear grades or you have graduated.
- Optional: test scores, an alumni interview of 30 to 45 minutes, and an Arts Supplement (due 6 November 2026 or 8 January 2027).
The Princeton essays for 2026-27 are:
- Academic interests (250 words): A.B. or undecided applicants say which areas interest them and how Princeton’s programmes fit; B.S.E. applicants explain their interest and experience in engineering.
- Lived experience (400 to 500 words): how your experiences will shape conversations in class, in the dining hall and elsewhere on campus, and what others might learn from you.
- Service (250 words): how your story connects to Princeton’s commitment to service and civic engagement.
- Three short answers (50 words each): a new skill you want to learn in college, what brings you joy, and the song that is the soundtrack of your life right now.
How to write the Princeton supplemental essays
Princeton reads every essay alongside a graded paper, so the readers already see how you write when a teacher is marking. The supplement is where they look for what drives you.
- Academic essay: name a question you want to work on and connect it to one or two real features of Princeton, such as independent work or the senior thesis. Avoid a list of professors.
- Lived experience essay: this is the longest piece. Build it around one scene from your life and finish with what you would add to a discussion.
- Service essay: service does not have to be a formal project. Helping run a church youth group or tutoring neighbours counts if you show what you did and what changed.
- Short answers: be plain and specific. A real song and one honest sentence about why beats a clever answer you think readers want.
A short opening for the lived experience essay, for illustration only:
“In my grandmother’s compound in Kano, arguments about football and politics were settled by whoever brought the most evidence to the evening meal.”
It works because it gives a real place and a habit of mind in one sentence. The rest of the essay would show how that habit plays out in a seminar.
Fall 2027 application deadlines
| Step | Single-Choice Early Action | Regular Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Application, graded paper, school documents | 1 November 2026 | 1 January 2027 |
| English test result (if needed) | 1 November 2026 | 1 January 2027 |
| Arts Supplement (optional) | 6 November 2026 | 8 January 2027 |
| Princeton Financial Aid Application | 9 November 2026 | 1 February 2027 |
| Decision | Mid-December 2026 | Late March 2027 |
| Reply date | 1 May 2027 | 1 May 2027 |
Single-Choice Early Action is non-binding, but it bars you from applying early to any other private US college. You may still apply early to US public universities, colleges outside the US and nonbinding rolling programmes. Early applicants are admitted, refused or deferred to regular decision.
Early deadline
The Princeton early action deadline is 1 November 2026. If your graded paper, recommendations or English test will not be ready, the 1 January 2027 regular deadline gives you two more months at no disadvantage for aid.
What happens after you apply
- Portal: within 24 to 48 hours you get access to Princeton’s applicant portal. Check it for missing documents.
- Aid application: the PFAA opens only after you submit; file it by 9 November or 1 February.
- Interview: an alumni interviewer may contact you. Interviews are not guaranteed and missing one does not count against you.
- Decision: early applicants hear in mid-December; regular applicants in late March. Admitted students who filed the PFAA see their aid award with the decision.
- Reply: accept or decline by 1 May 2027.
- Final report: your school sends final grades and exam results, even if WAEC or A-Level results arrive after the summer.
- Visa: Princeton issues the I-20 for the F-1 student visa. Book your embassy interview early, because waiting times vary by country, and check current US visa rules for your nationality.
Majors and academic strengths
Undergraduates earn either a Bachelor of Arts (A.B.) or a Bachelor of Science in Engineering (B.S.E.). In the Class of 2030, 68% are interested in the A.B. and 26% in the B.S.E. Princeton is known for undergraduate teaching by senior faculty and for independent work: A.B. students write a senior thesis, which many describe as the centre of their degree. Economics, public and international affairs, computer science, molecular biology and mathematics are among its best-known departments.
Princeton has no medical, law or business school, so the faculty’s attention goes to undergraduates and PhD students. Pre-medical students study any major and complete the required science courses.
Campus and city
Princeton is a small town in central New Jersey, roughly an hour by train from both New York City and Philadelphia. Students live in residential colleges for at least their first two years, and the campus is walkable. Social life centres on campus, so if you want a big-city experience on your doorstep, compare it with Columbia or Penn.
Common mistakes international applicants make
- Sending a graded paper translated into English. Princeton requires work originally written in English.
- Forgetting the English test when your school does not teach in English, or sending it after the deadline.
- Applying early to another private US college while applying Single-Choice Early Action.
- Filing the CSS Profile and missing the Princeton Financial Aid Application.
- Converting your grades into a US GPA yourself. Princeton reads them in your own system.
- Treating the 50-word answers as throwaways. Readers use them to see personality.
- Assuming test-optional means no academic evidence. Send WAEC, A-Level or IB results, actual or predicted, as they become available.
Costs aid doesn’t cover
- SAT, ACT or English test fees and score reports.
- The US visa application fee ($185) and the SEVIS I-901 fee ($350).
- Your family contribution and any expected student earnings shown on your award letter.
- Health insurance if you do not qualify for help through your aid package; confirm this with the aid office.
- Winter clothing, bedding and first-week shopping when you arrive.
Graduate admissions at Princeton
Princeton’s Graduate School admits students to PhD and a small number of master’s programmes. Each department sets its own deadline, usually in December, and asks for its own materials. Princeton has no professional schools in law, medicine or business, so graduate study there is mostly research-based. Check the Graduate School website for English test minimums, fees and funding for your department.

Who should apply to Princeton
Apply if you are at the top of your class in demanding subjects, you enjoy writing, and you want a smaller undergraduate-focused university where you will do serious independent research. Princeton is a strong choice for students who cannot take the SAT this year, since scores are optional for fall 2027.
Think twice if you want a large city campus or a professional undergraduate degree such as business or nursing, which Princeton does not offer. And with a 2.3% international admit rate, I would treat Princeton as one ambitious choice in a list of six to ten colleges.
