The Stony Brook online MSN is ranked No. 8 in the U.S. News 2026 Best Online Master’s in Nursing Programs, the highest placing for any school in New York State, and Stony Brook says it has held a top-ten spot for seven straight years. More than 600 nurses are enrolled across its 10 Master of Science programmes, all delivered through distance education with on-site requirements.
The short answer for nurses outside the United States is no, not yet. The Stony Brook online MSN requirements include a current, unencumbered New York State RN licence (by admission at the latest), U.S. clinical placements under a SUNY affiliation agreement, and on-site visits. A distance programme also cannot give you an F-1 student visa. If you already hold a New York licence, tuition is among the lowest in the top ten: $471 per credit for New York residents in fall 2026, and $565 per credit at Stony Brook’s online out-of-state rate. I checked everything below on Stony Brook’s own pages on 29 October 2026.
Stony Brook online MSN ranking
The School of Nursing reports that its online master’s programme was “ranked eighth nationwide for the second year in a row” in U.S. News, and calls itself the highest-placing school in New York State on that list. U.S. News released the 2026 Best Online Master’s in Nursing Programs on 27 January 2026. Stony Brook’s announcement does not say whether No. 8 is shared with another school, and it lists no specialty ranks.
U.S. News judged these programmes on engagement, faculty credentials and training, and peer assessment, according to Stony Brook. A high rank tells you the teaching is well regarded. It tells you nothing about whether you can enrol from abroad, which is a separate question answered further down.
Stony Brook online MSN tracks
Stony Brook’s Academic Programs page lists 10 Master of Science programmes, each also offered as an advanced certificate for nurses who already hold a master’s or doctorate and New York NP or midwife certification.
| MS programme | Type | Credits |
|---|---|---|
| Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) | Clinical NP | 45 |
| Adult-Gerontology Primary Care NP | Clinical NP | See programme page |
| Adult-Gerontology Acute Care NP | Clinical NP | See programme page |
| Pediatric Primary Care NP | Clinical NP | 45 |
| Pediatric Acute Care NP | Clinical NP | See programme page |
| Neonatal NP | Clinical NP | See programme page |
| Psychiatric/Mental Health NP | Clinical NP | See programme page |
| Nurse Midwifery | Clinical, midwifery | See programme page |
| Nursing Education | Non-NP | See programme page |
| Nursing Leadership | Non-NP | 36 |
The school also runs a Doctor of Nursing Practice. Its fall 2026 online out-of-state DNP rate is $1,281 per credit, which is far higher than the master’s rate, so the MS is the cheaper route for most nurses.
What the FNP and Leadership programmes look like
- The FNP is 45 credits: shared graduate core courses, two research courses, advanced pharmacology, health assessment and pathophysiology, then four clinical courses worth 19 credits between them. Graduates can sit the AANPCB FNP-C or ANCC FNP-BC exam and apply for New York State NP certification.
- Nursing Leadership is 36 credits, mostly leadership courses plus the same core and research courses. It suits charge nurses and managers who do not want a prescribing role.
- Programme length, total clinical hours and the number and length of on-site visits are not stated on the programme pages I read. Ask the school before you plan leave from work.
Can international nurses apply to the Stony Brook online MSN?
You can submit an application, and Stony Brook accepts international transcripts with a course-by-course evaluation. Taking part is a different matter. Every MS programme I checked requires a New York RN licence, and clinicals happen at sites that sign a SUNY clinical affiliation agreement. Stony Brook publishes nothing about students living outside the United States.
| Your situation | Can you enrol? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Living in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya or elsewhere, no U.S. licence | No, in practice | You need an unencumbered New York RN licence, and the school arranges clinicals only through U.S. affiliation agreements |
| Wanting an F-1 student visa | No | The programme is distance education; U.S. rules count at most one online class per term toward an F-1 student’s full-time load |
| U.S. resident with a New York RN licence | Yes, if you meet the other requirements | This is the applicant Stony Brook is built for |
| U.S. resident licensed in another state only | Possibly for some tracks | The Pediatric Primary Care NP page accepts a licence for your state of clinical practice at application, then requires a New York licence on admission |
Stony Brook’s licensing disclosure says its master’s programmes meet the educational requirements for licensure or certification in New York. It makes no determination for other states and tells students to check with their own state board. If you plan to practise as an NP outside New York, confirm with that board before you apply.
The route for a foreign-educated nurse
- Get your nursing education evaluated: the New York State Education Department reviews foreign nursing education for licensure, and many applicants also use a credential agency such as CGFNS (TruMerit).
- Meet the English requirement for licensure: U.S. boards and visa screening commonly accept IELTS, TOEFL or OET for internationally educated nurses. Check the score the New York board and your visa route require.
- Pass the NCLEX-RN: register through the New York board. NCSBN runs international test centres, so you can sit the exam outside the U.S.
- Move to the U.S. and work: most nurses arrive through employer-sponsored immigrant visas, not student visas.
- Apply to Stony Brook: with an active New York licence and a U.S. clinical site, you apply like any U.S. nurse. Stony Brook also wants a course-by-course evaluation of your foreign degree from a NACES member such as WES.
Stony Brook online MSN requirements
The FNP and Nursing Leadership pages list nearly the same requirements:
- A bachelor’s degree with an upper-division nursing major from an accredited nursing programme.
- A cumulative GPA of at least 3.0.
- A current, unencumbered New York State RN licence.
- A three-credit undergraduate statistics course; NP tracks also want a three-credit undergraduate health assessment course.
- Three letters of recommendation.
- A current CV or resume and a written statement.
- At least one year of recent relevant experience, listed as preferred, not required.
- Unofficial transcripts from every institution at application, with official copies after admission.
- Ability to meet the technical standards for admission and retention.
Neither page mentions the GRE or an interview, and neither lists an English test. International transcripts need a course-by-course evaluation from a NACES-accredited service such as World Education Services. After admission you will need an official transfer equivalency evaluation.
After admission
- Basic Life Support certification, plus ACLS for Adult-Gerontology Acute Care students.
- Proof of health insurance, university health requirements and malpractice insurance (NP student malpractice cover for NP tracks).
- A DISA Healthcare or CastleBranch account, which carries a one-time fee.
Stony Brook online MSN deadlines
Applications for the 2027 cycle opened on 1 August 2026. Each programme has its own deadline, and the two I confirmed both lead to a summer start.
| Programme | Deadline | Start |
|---|---|---|
| Nursing Leadership MS | 28 January 2027 | Summer 2027 |
| Family Nurse Practitioner MS | 9 October 2027 | Summer 2028 |
The FNP deadline for summer 2027 was 9 October 2026, which has passed, so the date above is carried one year forward (based on this year’s date; confirm on the official page when the call opens). Check the deadline for any other track on its own programme page.
Stony Brook online MSN tuition
Stony Brook bills graduate students per credit. These are the fall 2026 rates.
| Rate (fall 2026) | Per credit | Full time (12 credits) |
|---|---|---|
| New York resident | $471 | $5,655 |
| Online out-of-state rate (no NY presence) | $565 | $6,785 |
| Standard non-resident | $1,158 | $13,900 |
The online out-of-state rate is 1.2 times the resident rate. Stony Brook says non-residents without a permanent or local presence in New York “may be eligible” for it, and the nursing master’s courses (HN codes) appear on its approved online list. Anyone living in New York pays the resident rate if they qualify.
The campus fee chart adds about $138.80 per credit in college, academic excellence, counselling and health, technology, transportation and career fees, plus a $45 activity fee each semester. I could not confirm which of these apply to distance students, so ask Student Financial Services.
At tuition alone, the 45-credit FNP comes to about $21,195 at the resident rate or $25,425 at the online out-of-state rate. The 36-credit Leadership MS comes to about $16,956 or $20,340. These are my estimates from the fall 2026 rates; rates usually rise each year.
Costs not covered by tuition
- Travel and accommodation for on-site requirements at Stony Brook on Long Island.
- Malpractice insurance, health insurance, BLS or ACLS courses, and the compliance tracking account.
- Your New York RN licence and, if you move, licences in other states.
- Credential evaluations and English tests if you trained abroad.
- NP certification exam fees after graduation.
Stony Brook will not use clinical sites that charge the school, the student or a third party for placement, so you should not face a paid placement fee there.
Scholarships and financial aid
Federal loans through FAFSA are only for U.S. citizens and eligible non-citizens. I found no Stony Brook scholarship aimed at international online MSN students. Hospital tuition reimbursement is the usual way working nurses pay. Undergraduate awards in our Stony Brook University admission guide for international students do not apply to this programme.
Accreditation and certification
The School of Nursing states that its baccalaureate, master’s, DNP and post-graduate APRN certificate programmes are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). FNP graduates can sit the AANPCB or ANCC family NP exam and register as nurse practitioners with the New York State Education Department. I did not find published certification pass rates.
How to write the Stony Brook written statement
Stony Brook asks for a written statement with your CV and three references. Three letters is more than many programmes ask, so the statement has to tie them together.
- Name the track and say why it fits the work you already do.
- Describe one patient or unit problem in concrete terms: what happened, what you did, what you could not do as an RN.
- Say where you expect to do clinicals. Stony Brook expects students to identify a suitable site, so a named site and preceptor show you understand how the programme works.
- End with the role you want, in a named setting, within two years of graduating.
For illustration only, an FNP applicant might open like this:
“On the medical floor where I work, about one patient in five is readmitted with heart failure within a month. Most of them have no primary care provider. I want to be the clinician who sees them in the week after discharge, and I have already spoken with the nurse practitioner at our hospital’s community clinic about precepting me.”
Common mistakes foreign-educated nurses make
- Assuming “online” means you can study from home abroad: clinicals run through U.S. affiliation agreements, and on-site visits are required.
- Applying with a licence from another country: Stony Brook wants a current, unencumbered New York RN licence.
- Expecting an I-20: a distance programme does not support an F-1 visa.
- Forgetting the evaluation: foreign transcripts need a NACES course-by-course report with your application.
- Missing the early FNP deadline: FNP closes in early October for a start the following summer.
- Assuming NP certification transfers everywhere: Stony Brook confirms New York requirements only.
Who should apply
Stony Brook fits nurses who live in New York or hold a New York licence and want a highly ranked MS at public-university prices. The resident rate of $471 per credit is hard to beat in the top ten. It also suits nurses in other states who can secure a New York licence, a local clinical site and time off for on-site visits.
If you are still outside the U.S. or preparing for the NCLEX, start with licensure. Our guide to recommendation letters with samples will help when you need the three references later.
