UCI Merage MBA 2027 for International Students: Ranking, GMAT, Tuition, Scholarships and Deadlines
UC Irvine’s Merage MBA is No. 51 in U.S. News 2026 and STEM-designated. See the 26.4% acceptance rate, test-optional rules, English scores, essays, about $61,850 in nonresident core charges and the 15 January 2027 Round 2 deadline.

The UCI Merage MBA is the two-year, STEM-designated full-time MBA at the University of California, Irvine’s Paul Merage School of Business in Orange County, California. U.S. News ranks it No. 51 in its 2026 Best Business Schools list, tied with Kansas. Poets&Quants reported a 26.4% acceptance rate for the class that entered in 2025, which makes Merage the most selective school in its ranking band, and about one-third of each class comes from outside the United States.

Round 1 closed on 15 October 2026, so your Deadline is Round 2 on 15 January 2027. Round 3, on 1 March 2027, is the last round open to international applicants. This guide covers the UCI Merage MBA requirements, acceptance rate, tuition for nonresidents, scholarships, essays, the interview, salaries and the mistakes international applicants make.

UCI Merage MBA ranking

U.S. News placed Merage No. 51 among full-time MBA programmes in the 2026 edition, released on 7 April 2026. Merage’s own MBA page still quotes No. 43 from the 2025 edition, so this year’s list moved the school down eight places. Poets&Quants, which blends several rankings into its own list, has Merage much higher at No. 32 in its 2026 table.

I would not read much into an eight-place move in this band, where a handful of points separate dozens of schools. What matters more for an international applicant is the STEM designation, the Southern California job market and the cost, which is lower than at most private schools nearby.

UCI Merage MBA acceptance rate and class profile

Poets&Quants’ August 2026 analysis puts the Merage acceptance rate at 26.4% for the 2025 entering class, 26.7% the year before and 24.0% in 2023. About 33% of admitted applicants enrolled in 2025, down from 47.4% the year before. Merage is far more selective than most schools ranked near it; Boston College admitted 54.8% and Kansas 65.4% in the same data.

UCI Merage MBA requirements for international students

  1. Degree: the equivalent of a four-year U.S. bachelor’s degree. Non-U.S. transcripts must show that the degree was conferred.
  2. Work experience: typically two to six years of full-time professional work.
  3. Transcripts: unofficial copies from every college you attended, uploaded with the application. Official transcripts are needed only after you accept an offer.
  4. Resume: for each job, give the organisation’s name and website, your title, detailed duties and why you left.
  5. Essays: two required essays and one optional essay (details below).
  6. Two recommendations: Merage prefers recommenders who can speak to why you want an MBA.
  7. GMAT or GRE: optional, with no minimum. Merage uses your highest total and accepts scores up to five years old. GMAT code 0DP-7R-16, GRE code 4859.
  8. English test: unless you qualify for the waiver.
  9. Interview: by invitation, and required before admission.
  10. Application fee: $150, non-refundable, paid by card.

Should you send a GMAT or GRE score?

Merage lets you apply without a score if you have at least two years of full-time work, a strong academic record and a GPA of 3.0 or higher. You then write an extra essay showing you are ready for MBA coursework. Two warnings on the admissions page are worth taking seriously: some employers, especially in consulting and finance, ask for a score, and scores feed into merit scholarship decisions. If you need money, I would sit the GMAT Focus or GRE.

English requirements

Test or routeMerage minimum
TOEFL iBT80, taken within the last two years (institution code 4859)
IELTS Academic7.0 overall with no band below 6.0, within two years, sent electronically by the test centre
DuolingoNot mentioned on the admissions page
WaiverDegree from an institution where English was the sole language of instruction, as listed in the World Higher Education Database (WHED)

If your university is in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya or another English-speaking country, check its WHED entry before you assume the waiver applies. The listing has to show English as the only language of instruction.

UCI Merage MBA deadlines 2026-2027

Round 3 (final round for international applicants)1 March 20271 May 2027
Round 4 (domestic)1 May 20275 June 2027
Final round (domestic)30 June 2027Rolling

Round 1 closed on 15 October 2026. These dates come from Clear Admit’s 2026-2027 listing; Merage’s own MBA page also points applicants to the 15 January deadline. Merage reviews applications in the order they are complete and aims to decide within six weeks.

International deadline

Rounds 4 and 5 are for domestic candidates only. If you need an F-1 visa, 1 March 2027 is the last date you can apply for fall 2027 entry, and Round 2 gives you more time for the I-20 and visa interview.

How to apply, step by step

  1. Check your degree: make sure your bachelor’s is equivalent to a four-year U.S. degree and that your transcript shows conferral.
  2. Decide on testing: book the GMAT or GRE, or confirm you meet the waiver terms.
  3. Book your English test: unless your university qualifies for the WHED waiver.
  4. Brief two recommenders: choose people who know your work and your reasons for an MBA.
  5. Draft the essays: they are shown inside the application.
  6. Build the resume: include each employer’s website and your reason for leaving each job.
  7. Submit and pay $150: before 15 January 2027 for Round 2.
  8. Interview: if invited, in person or on Zoom with the Admissions Committee.

UCI Merage MBA essays

The admissions page says there are two required essays on your professional accomplishments, career goals and values, plus one optional essay, and that the prompts are shown in the application. Clear Admit’s analysis of the most recent published set lists them as below. Treat these as a guide and confirm the wording when you open the application.

EssayPrompt summaryLength
Video essayIntroduce yourself and discuss your experience as it relates to your short-term goals60 seconds, submitted as an unlisted video link
Written essayA core value that defines you, a specific example of it guiding your decisions, and how it will shape your contributions as an MBA student500 words
Optional essayAnything else about your background, family or experience that helps the committee understand your achievements300 words

How to answer the video essay

Sixty seconds is about 150 to 180 spoken words. Give your name, where you work, one result you are proud of, and the role you want straight after the MBA. Make the short-term goal concrete: an industry, a function and a type of company in Southern California. Set the YouTube link to “Unlisted”, because Merage cannot open private videos.

How to answer the core value essay

Pick one value and one story. The best answers show a decision that cost you something. Spend about half the words on the story, a quarter on what you learned, and the rest on what you will do at Merage: a club you will help run, a case competition, a study group you will lead.

For illustration: “In 2023 my manager asked me to sign off on a supplier audit I had not finished. I said no, and our plant in Ota lost two weeks of production while I completed it. Accuracy over speed is the value I live by, and it has cost me before.”

How to use the optional essay

Use it to explain a gap in employment, a weak semester or a missing recommender, in plain facts. Do not use it for a second goals essay.

The UCI Merage MBA interview

Interviews are by invitation only and are required for admission. The Admissions Committee runs them in person or on Zoom and tells you by email. Merage says the interview tests your interpersonal and communication skills. Expect questions on your resume, why an MBA now, why Merage, and your short-term goal. Test your camera, sound and internet connection the day before, and have a backup plan if your power supply is unreliable.

What the admissions committee looks for

  • At least two years of real work, with promotions or growing responsibility.
  • Quantitative readiness: a solid GPA, a test score, or work that uses numbers every day. The programme leans on management science, data science and operations research.
  • A short-term goal that fits Southern California hiring, such as technology, healthcare or consulting roles in Orange County and Los Angeles.
  • Clear communication, which the interview is designed to test.
  • Recommenders who know why you want an MBA, as well as what you do at work.

UCI Merage MBA tuition and cost 2026-2027

As a public university, UC Irvine bills the full-time MBA as systemwide tuition plus professional degree supplemental tuition (PDST), plus nonresident tuition for anyone who is not a California resident. International students pay the nonresident rate for the whole programme. The University of California Office of the President lists these 2026-27 charges, and notes they may not be final.

Charge (2026-27, per year)Nonresident
Systemwide tuition$13,722
Student services fee$1,344
PDST for the Irvine full-time MBA$34,539
Nonresident supplemental tuition (graduate professional)$12,245
Total core charges$61,850
UCI campus fees (graduate rate)About $932 in the first year
Student health insurance$7,771.86

That puts tuition, fees and health insurance at roughly $70,550 for the first year before rent and food. Merage’s financial aid page did not give a single figure, so check the Merage cost page or the UCI Registrar before you budget. Over two years, expect to pay well over $120,000 in tuition and fees alone.

Costs not covered by tuition

  • Rent in Irvine and Orange County, which is among the highest in the U.S.; budget for shared housing.
  • A car or long commutes. Southern California is spread out and public transport to employers is limited.
  • Visa fees: the SEVIS I-901 fee and the visa application fee.
  • Flights home and back for interviews and the summer internship.
  • GMAT or GRE, English test and score-sending fees.
  • Laptop and software.
  • Living costs in the summer between years if your internship is unpaid or short.

UCI Merage MBA scholarships for international students

Merage says 90% of full-time MBA students receive a scholarship and that test scores can affect merit awards. It does not name individual fellowships or publish amounts on the pages I checked, and it does not list Prodigy, MPOWER or other loans for international students who lack a U.S. cosigner. Apply in Round 2 rather than Round 3 if funding matters, since later rounds compete for a smaller pool. For outside funding, see our list of the best American scholarships for international students.

STEM designation and OPT

Merage says its full-time MBA is STEM-designated, and qualified international graduates can apply for the 24-month STEM OPT extension after the standard 12 months of OPT. That gives you up to three years of U.S. work authorisation and more than one chance at the H-1B lottery.

UCI Merage MBA salary and employment

OutcomeFigure
Job landing rate, six months after graduation91%
Average salary after graduation$122,000
Median base salaryNot published
Employment at three monthsNot published
Top industries and employersNot published on the MBA page

These figures come from the Merage full-time MBA page, which does not give the class year. Merage measures its job rate at six months; most schools report at three months, so the 91% is not directly comparable with other schools’ figures.

Common mistakes international applicants make

  1. Missing the international cut-off: applying in Round 4 or 5, which are for domestic candidates only.
  2. Assuming the English waiver: without checking WHED for “sole language of instruction”.
  3. Sending a paper IELTS report: Merage accepts only electronic delivery from the test centre.
  4. Skipping the test when you need money: scores feed into merit scholarships.
  5. Leaving out the resume details Merage asks for: employer websites and reasons for leaving.
  6. Uploading a private video: the committee cannot open it, and your file is delayed.
  7. Budgeting with the resident tuition figure: international students pay the nonresident rate.

Who should apply to UCI Merage, and who shouldn’t

Apply if you have two to six years of work, want a STEM MBA in Southern California, and are drawn to analytics, technology or healthcare careers. The small class and the one-third international share are good signs that you will not be isolated.

Look elsewhere if your profile is weak on paper and you need a high chance of admission; Merage admits about one in four applicants. It is also a poor fit if you cannot handle Orange County living costs without a large scholarship.
