Harvard Business School MBA admission requirements for international students are the same as for US applicants: a GMAT or GRE score, three short essays and a career goals answer, two recommendations, a resume, transcripts and, if your undergraduate degree was not taught only in English, a TOEFL, IELTS, PTE or Duolingo score. HBS sets no minimum test score and gives fellowships on need only. International students qualify for those fellowships, and HBS graduates can use the F-1 STEM OPT track for up to 36 months of US work authorisation.
Round 1 for the Class of 2029 closed on 9 September 2026. The deadline still open is Round 2, due at 12:00 noon Eastern Time on 5 January 2027, with decisions on 25 March 2027. Tuition for 2026-27 is $84,760, and a single student’s first-year budget is about $130,318. HBS is tied for #4 in the U.S. News 2026 Best Business Schools list. I checked these figures on HBS pages and the latest class profile on 29 October 2026; where I relied on secondary sources, I say so.

Harvard Business School ranking
HBS is tied for #4 with Kellogg in the U.S. News 2026 Best Business Schools ranking for full-time MBA programmes, released 7 April 2026. It moved up from #6 in the 2025 edition. Stanford is #1, Wharton #2 and Chicago Booth #3.
HBS has the largest class among these schools, at more than 900 students, and the largest alumni network. Its case method, where you discuss a real business problem in every class, is the main difference you will feel day to day.
HBS acceptance rate and class profile
HBS does not publish an admit rate on its profile summary. For the Class of 2027 it received 9,409 applications and enrolled 943 students, which works out to about 10% of applicants enrolling. The admit rate is somewhat higher because not everyone admitted enrols; Leland estimates about 11%.
| Class of 2027 figure | Value |
|---|---|
| Applications | 9,409 (down from 9,856) |
| Enrolled | 943 |
| Women | 44% |
| International students | 37% |
| Median GMAT (10th edition, 28% took it) | 730 |
| Median GMAT Focus (34%) | 685 |
| Median GRE (44%) | 164 Quant, 164 Verbal |
| Average GPA (US schools) | 3.76 |
| Average work experience | 4.9 years |
| First-generation college students | 10% |
| Top pre-MBA industries | Consulting 19%, PE/VC 16%, technology 13%, financial services 10% |
Undergraduate backgrounds were spread across engineering (24%), business (22%), economics (19%), maths and physical sciences (19%), social sciences (11%) and arts and humanities (5%). HBS does not publish GMAT ranges, so the median is your best benchmark.
HBS MBA requirements for international applicants
HBS uses the same criteria for international applicants as for US citizens. What changes is paperwork:
- Everything, including transcripts and recommendations, must be submitted online in English.
- List every post-secondary institution you attended, including technical and professional schools, with formal names and diploma titles.
- Uploaded transcripts must show course names translated into English. An unofficial translation is fine when you apply.
- If admitted, you must have official transcripts sent from each institution to World Education Services (WES) with an official word-for-word English translation. HBS can withdraw an offer if these do not match what you uploaded.
- A GMAT or GRE score, a resume and two recommendations. Extra recommendations or work portfolios are not considered.
English language requirement
You must send TOEFL, IELTS, PTE or Duolingo scores unless your undergraduate institution taught only in English. A graduate degree taught in English also exempts you, though HBS recommends taking a test anyway. Official scores go directly to HBS; the TOEFL code is 3444. HBS has no minimum score, but its Admissions Board discourages applicants below these levels:
| Test | Below this is discouraged |
|---|---|
| TOEFL (new 1 to 6 scale) | 5 |
| TOEFL (0 to 120 scale) | 109 |
| IELTS | 7.5 |
| PTE | 75 |
| Duolingo | 145 |
These are higher than the minimums Stanford (IELTS 7.0) and Booth (IELTS 7) set. If English is a second language for you, budget time for a retake.

HBS essays 2026-2027 and how to answer them
| Prompt | Limit |
|---|---|
| Business: Please reflect on how your choices have influenced your career path and aspirations. | 300 words |
| Leadership: What experiences have shaped how you invest in others and how you lead? | 250 words |
| Growth: Please share an example of how you have demonstrated curiosity. | 250 words |
| Career goals: Briefly tell us more about your career aspirations (with industry and function menus). | 500 characters |
| Additional information (only to clarify other parts of the application) | 75 words |
| Reapplicant essay | 250 words |
Business essay: your choices and your career
This is about decisions. Pick two or three points where you chose one path over another, explain what you were weighing, and show how each choice led to where you want to go. Mistakes and changes of direction are fine if you show what you learned.
For illustration: “In 2021 I turned down a bank graduate programme in Lagos to join a twelve-person logistics start-up. My parents thought it was a mistake. For eight months, so did I.”
Leadership essay: how you invest in others
HBS asks how you develop people, not how big your title is. Write about someone you helped grow, what you did over time and what it taught you about leading. A single relationship told in detail usually works better than a summary of a whole team.
For illustration: “Chidi was the slowest analyst on my team when he joined. A year later he was training the new hires, and I had learned to stop fixing his spreadsheets myself.”
Growth essay: curiosity
Choose a moment when you went after something you did not need to know, and show what you did with it. It can be outside work. The curiosity should lead to action and some change in you.
Career goals answer
500 characters is about 80 words. State the role, the industry and the setting, and make sure it fits the industry and function you pick from the menus.
HBS interview format
Interviews are by invitation after the Board reviews your written application. They are run by Admissions Board members who have read your file, and consultants such as Sia Admissions describe them as about 30 minutes long. Expect fast, specific questions on your resume, choices and goals. Within about 24 hours of the interview you must submit a written post-interview reflection; instructions come with the invitation.
Since the interviewer has read everything, practise explaining your decisions briefly and moving between topics quickly. The reflection is a chance to add something you did not get to say, so keep notes straight after the interview.
HBS tuition and cost of attendance 2026-2027
| First-year cost (single student, nine months) | Amount |
|---|---|
| Tuition | $84,760 |
| Student health fee | $1,944 |
| Health insurance | $4,954 |
| Housing | $18,600 |
| Food | $9,400 |
| Transportation | $1,860 |
| Other living expenses | $8,800 |
| Total | $130,318 |
This breakdown is taken from Leland’s summary of the HBS budget. The tuition figure matches the $84,760 in Poets&Quants’ September 2026 cost table. HBS has the lowest tuition of the top five, but the whole degree still costs about $260,000.
Costs not covered
- A computer (about $1,500), which the budget lists as a variable cost outside the total.
- Application, test and score-reporting fees.
- WES evaluation and certified translations after admission.
- F-1 visa and SEVIS fees and flights to Boston.
- Summer months: the budget covers nine months only.
- Optional treks, conferences and international immersions.
HBS scholarships for international students
- Need-based fellowships: HBS awards fellowships on financial need only, with no merit scholarships. International students qualify on the same terms as US students. Leland reports an average award of about $46,000 a year and that roughly half of students receive aid.
- How to apply: you apply for aid after admission. Non-US citizens and permanent residents submit a Certification of Finances form along with the MBA financial aid application and income documents.
- Loans: the pages I could check did not say whether international students can borrow without a US cosigner. Ask the Kraft Family Financial Aid Office (finaid@hbs.edu) after admission.
Many African applicants combine an HBS fellowship with an outside award. Our list of American scholarships for international students is a good place to start.
STEM OPT for HBS graduates
HBS says the F-1 STEM OPT track gives eligible international students up to 36 months of US work authorisation after graduation (12 months of standard OPT plus the 24-month STEM extension). The Harvard International Office handles the details.
HBS MBA salary and employment
I could not reach HBS’s own employment pages. The figures below come from MBASchools.org’s summary of the Class of 2024 report and should be checked against HBS’s latest data before you rely on them.
| Class of 2024 outcome (secondary source) | Figure |
|---|---|
| Offers within 3 months | About 96% of job seekers |
| Median base salary | $175,000 |
| Median signing bonus | $30,000 |
| Consulting | 24% |
| Technology | 22% |
| Financial services, including PE/VC | 22% |
| Healthcare | 5% |
What the HBS admissions committee looks for
The three essay labels tell you what HBS wants to see: business judgement, leadership that develops other people, and curiosity. The case method also means you will speak in nearly every class, so HBS wants people who can make an argument in front of a full classroom. The interview and reflection test that directly.
Common mistakes international applicants make
- Treating the leadership essay as a list of titles and team sizes.
- Submitting after 12:00 noon ET on deadline day.
- Scoring below the discouraged English thresholds and not retaking.
- Uploading transcripts without English course names.
- Leaving out a diploma or short course from the education list, which can cause problems at WES verification.
- Writing a long additional information answer when HBS allows 75 words.
- Planning to apply in Round 3, which does not exist for the standard MBA.
Who should apply to HBS
HBS suits applicants with a clear record of leading and developing people, who are comfortable speaking up, and who want general management careers or a very large network. Its need-based aid is attractive if your family income is modest.
Think again if you prefer lectures to discussion, or if your English test scores are well below the HBS thresholds.
