Macalester College admission requirements for international students come down to a Common App, your school transcript with any national or external exam results, a counselor letter, one teacher letter and, if you want aid, a CSS Profile or the free ISAFA plus Macalester’s own Financial Declaration Form. SAT and ACT scores are optional, and English test scores are recommended but not required. Macalester is a private liberal arts college in Saint Paul, Minnesota, in the middle of the Minneapolis and Saint Paul metro area.
The college admitted 26% of applicants for the Class of 2030, and 17% of that class is international. Macalester meets 100% of demonstrated need, but money for international students is limited and your request for aid is weighed in the admission decision. The Early Decision I and Early Action deadline for fall 2027 is 1 November 2026, only days away as I write this, and Regular Decision closes on 15 January 2027. I checked everything below on Macalester’s own pages on 29 October 2026.
Macalester College ranking
Macalester was #28 among National Liberal Arts Colleges in the U.S. News 2026 edition, as reported by Macalester’s own news office in September 2025. The same edition placed it #10 for undergraduate teaching, #11 for most innovative schools and #17 for study abroad. I could not confirm Macalester’s place in the U.S. News 2027 edition (released 22 September 2026), because the U.S. News pages block automated reading and no news report I found lists it. Check the U.S. News profile before you quote a 2027 number.
Macalester is one of very few selective liberal arts colleges inside a big city, and roughly a quarter of its students hold citizenship outside the United States. That mix is the main reason international applicants put it on their lists.
Macalester acceptance rate and class profile
Macalester’s admissions office publishes a profile of each entering class. These are the figures for the Class of 2030, the students who started in fall 2026 (data current as of 4 September 2026).
| Measure (Class of 2030, fall 2026) | Figure |
|---|---|
| Applications | 10,048 |
| Admitted | 2,656 |
| Acceptance rate | 26% |
| Enrolled | 562 |
| International students | 17% of the class |
| Non-U.S. citizens, including dual citizens | 28% |
| Countries represented (by citizenship, including the U.S.) | 59 |
| Students who submitted SAT or ACT scores | 47% |
| Median SAT of submitters | 730 Math, 740 Evidence-Based Reading and Writing |
| Median ACT of submitters | 32 |
| First-generation students | 13% |
Macalester’s International Student Programs office counts 106 new international students in the Class of 2030, from 38 countries, and 315 international students on campus in fall 2025, from 78 countries. Macalester does not publish a separate acceptance rate for international applicants. Given that the aid budget for non-U.S. citizens is limited, I would expect aided international applicants to face a lower admit rate than the overall 26%, but the college does not give a number.
Macalester tuition for international students (2026-27)
Macalester’s tuition page lists these charges for 2026-27. Tuition includes required course materials.
| Cost item (2026-27) | Amount |
|---|---|
| Tuition and required course materials | $74,394 |
| Residence hall | $9,268 |
| Meal plan | $8,162 |
| Activity fee | $330 |
| Total billed by Macalester | $92,154 |
| Health insurance (waived only with qualifying coverage) | $3,329 |
| Textbooks and supplies (estimate) | $104 |
| Computer purchase (estimate) | $954 |
| Personal expenses (estimate) | $2,400 |
| Travel (estimate, varies) | $100 to $1,000 |
| Estimated total with insurance and top travel estimate | About $99,941 |
The last line is my own sum; Macalester does not print a single total for international students. Your real travel cost from Lagos, Nairobi, Karachi or Hanoi will be well above the $1,000 estimate, which is built for students from U.S. states.
Macalester scholarships for international students: how aid works
Macalester gives international students two kinds of money: need-based aid and one merit scholarship.
- Need-aware admission: Macalester says that when financial need is a factor in admission, it looks at how much aid you will need. Its international aid page describes competition for these funds as extremely keen.
- Full need met: Macalester’s 2025 fact sheet says it meets 100% of demonstrated need, and 59% of all students receive need-based grants from the college. The average need-based aid package is $65,189.
- Loans and work are part of packages: international aid can include the Macalester College International Student Loan and a campus job of about 9 hours a week, which Macalester expects to earn about $3,600 after taxes in the first year. You cannot swap the job for more scholarship.
- Apply now or not at all: you must state that you need aid when you apply. Aid cannot be requested after admission or once you enrol, except through the International Student Financial Aid Reconsideration process for a serious change in family circumstances.
- Outside scholarships: report any outside funding; Macalester applies its Outside Scholarship Policy to it.
Charles J. Turck Presidential Honor Scholarship
This is Macalester’s merit award for international students. A limited number of strong international students receive up to $40,000 a year. Every international applicant is considered automatically, with no separate form. Applying without test scores does not hurt your chances for this or any other Macalester scholarship.
How to apply for Macalester financial aid as an international student
- Tick the aid box in your application: say clearly in the Common App that you are applying for need-based aid.
- Choose one aid form: the CSS Profile, or the 2027-2028 International Student Application for Financial Assistance (ISAFA). Macalester does not give CSS Profile fee waivers to international applicants, so use the free ISAFA if the CSS fee is a burden.
- Complete the Macalester Financial Declaration Form: it appears on the Applicant Checklist in your portal after Macalester receives your Common App.
- Meet the priority aid date: 9 November 2026 for ED I and EA, 8 January 2027 for ED II and 22 January 2027 for Regular Decision.
- Not applying for aid? Sign the Financial Obligations Agreement in the portal instead. Without one of these forms, Macalester will not review your application.
Macalester admission requirements for international students: the application
| Part | What Macalester asks for |
|---|---|
| Application | Common App (a preliminary application is also open) |
| Application fee | Not mentioned on Macalester’s application pages; Macalester’s rankings page cites Niche’s list of best colleges with no application fee |
| Transcript | Official record of grades 9 to 12 or 13, sent by your school, with external exam results such as WAEC or IGCSE; predicted results are accepted |
| Recommendations | One from a counselor or school official and one from a teacher in a main academic subject |
| Senior-year grades | ED applicants self-report current grades (1 to 16 November for ED I, 1 to 20 January for ED II); RD applicants send an updated transcript by 15 February if first-term grades were missing |
| Aid documents | CSS Profile or ISAFA, plus the Macalester Financial Declaration Form |
| SAT or ACT | Optional (codes: SAT 6390, ACT 2122) |
| English proficiency | Recommended, not required (see below) |
| Optional extras | A third recommendation if it adds something new; arts portfolio for art, music, theatre or dance |
Testing policy
Macalester is test-optional for the SAT and ACT. Only 47% of the Class of 2030 sent scores, and those who did had a median of 730 Math and 740 reading and writing. If your scores sit near those medians, send them; if they are well below, leave them out and let your transcript and exam results speak.
English requirements
Macalester recommends, but does not require, an English test if English is not your first language and you have spent fewer than two years in a curriculum taught mainly in English. It accepts TOEFL, IELTS, the Duolingo English Test, or an unscripted third-party interview with InitialView or Vericant. No minimum score is published. Two cautions: once you submit a score it cannot be removed from your file, and Macalester may ask for results if it needs them to decide.
If you studied in an English-medium school for all of secondary school, which covers most WAEC candidates in Ghana, Nigeria and Sierra Leone and many Kenyan and Ugandan students, the recommendation does not apply to you.
Interviews
Macalester does not offer online interviews to international applicants who need a student visa, because of capacity limits. You can choose a paid InitialView or Vericant interview instead. It is optional, and skipping it does not lower your chances.
Macalester deadlines for fall 2027 entry
| Round | Application deadline | Priority aid deadline | Decision | Reply by |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Early Decision I (binding) | 1 November 2026 | 9 November 2026 | 6 December 2026 | 21 December 2026 |
| Early Action (non-binding) | 1 November 2026 | 9 November 2026 | 19 December 2026 | 1 May 2027 |
| Early Decision II (binding) | 1 January 2027 | 8 January 2027 | 31 January 2027 | 15 February 2027 |
| Regular Decision | 15 January 2027 | 22 January 2027 | 14 March 2027 | 1 May 2027 |
| Transfer | 15 March 2027 | 15 March 2027 | 2 May 2027 | 30 May 2027 |
Macalester’s dates page shows days of the week without years; the weekdays match November 2026 to May 2027, so I have added the years.
Deadline
Early Decision I and Early Action close on 1 November 2026. If you cannot finish your aid forms properly by 9 November, Early Decision II (1 January 2027) or Regular Decision (15 January 2027) is the safer choice.
How to write the Macalester supplemental essays
For 2026-27, College Essay Advisors reports two Macalester prompts of up to 300 words each, which it describes as optional. One asks how Macalester’s place in the Twin Cities would shape your academic, social or community life. The other asks how your experiences, views or hopes connect with Macalester’s four stated values: academic distinction, internationalism, multiculturalism and service to society. Confirm the wording inside the Common App before you write.
I would write both. A strong answer is specific in two directions: something real about you, and something real about Saint Paul or Macalester. For the location prompt, name a place, organisation or kind of work in the Twin Cities that matches what you already do at home. For the mission prompt, pick one of the four values and show it in one scene from your life; do not try to cover all four.
A sample opening for the mission prompt, for illustration only:
“Our compound in Kano had four languages and one borehole, and every morning I translated the queue.”
The essay would go on to show what translating between neighbours taught the writer about multiculturalism and service, then link that to one Macalester course, club or city partner the writer has actually researched.
What happens after you apply
- Portal check: watch your applicant portal for the Financial Declaration Form and any missing documents. An incomplete aid file stops your review.
- Senior grades: self-report them in the ED windows, or have your school send an updated transcript for Regular Decision.
- Decision: 6 December for ED I, 19 December for EA, 31 January for ED II and 14 March for Regular Decision, with an aid offer for admitted aid applicants.
- Commit: pay the tuition deposit through the admitted-student portal by your round’s reply date.
- Visa paperwork: once you enrol, Macalester issues the I-20 for your F-1 visa interview, based on the funding shown in your aid file.
Common mistakes international applicants make
- Forgetting the Financial Declaration Form: it is a Macalester form in the portal, separate from the CSS Profile or ISAFA, and the file is not reviewed without it.
- Paying for a CSS Profile you cannot afford: Macalester gives no CSS fee waivers to internationals, but it accepts the free ISAFA.
- Applying without aid and hoping to ask later: Macalester will not add aid after admission except in rare reconsideration cases.
- Ignoring the essays because they are labelled optional: at a 26% admit rate with limited international aid, every piece of writing counts.
- Sending a weak English score: scores cannot be deleted once sent, so only send one that helps.
- Assuming the aid offer will be loan-free: international packages can include a Macalester loan and a campus job.
Costs that aid does not cover
- CSS Profile fees if you choose it over the ISAFA, plus English test and third-party interview fees.
- Visa application and SEVIS fees, passport costs and your first flight to Minneapolis.
- Winter clothing. Saint Paul winters are long and very cold, and a proper coat and boots are a real first-month expense.
- Travel home in summer and winter breaks beyond what your aid package budgets.
- Any gap between your campus job earnings and your personal spending; Macalester budgets $2,400 a year for personal expenses.
Majors, campus and city
Macalester has about 2,068 students, a 10:1 student-faculty ratio, 198 full-time faculty and 39 majors. The most popular are economics, psychology, biology, computer science and political science. Study-away programmes approved by the college run in 100 countries. The campus sits at 1600 Grand Avenue in Saint Paul, in the Macalester-Groveland neighbourhood, a short ride from downtown Minneapolis and Saint Paul, which puts internships and community work across the Twin Cities within easy reach.
Macalester graduate admissions
Macalester is an undergraduate college. Its fact sheet lists no graduate or professional schools, so if you want a master’s or PhD you will apply elsewhere, usually after a Macalester degree. For graduate study in the United States more broadly, our guide to American scholarships for international students covers funded options.
Macalester compared with similar colleges
| College | U.S. News rank | Acceptance rate | Estimated cost for internationals | International aid |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Macalester | #28 (2026 edition) | 26% (Class of 2030) | About $99,941 (my estimate) | Need-aware; full need met; Turck scholarship up to $40,000 |
| Carleton | #16 (2027 edition) | 18% (Class of 2030) | $104,746 | Limited funding; full need without loans |
| Grinnell | #16 (2027 edition) | 14% (Class of 2030) | $94,338 | Need-aware; full need without loans |
| Middlebury | #19 tie (2027 edition) | 17% (Class of 2030) | $97,386 | Need-aware; full need; CSS Profile only |
Macalester has the highest admit rate of the four and the only city campus. Carleton and Grinnell keep loans out of their packages, which Macalester does not promise international students. If you are applying to a group of Midwest colleges, the Grinnell and Carleton guides are the natural next reads.
Who should apply to Macalester
Apply if you want a small college with real city life, care about international affairs or public service, and like the idea of classmates from nearly 60 countries in your first-year class. It is also a smart choice if your grades and exam results are strong but your test scores are not, since most admitted students did not send scores.
Think hard if you need a full ride with no loans at all. Macalester meets full need, but its international packages can include a loan and a campus job, and the aid pool is small. I would pair it with need-blind or loan-free colleges such as Amherst; our Amherst financial aid guide and MIT admission guide explain how those work.
