Wharton MBA 2027 for International Students: Ranking, GMAT, Tuition, Scholarships and Deadlines

Wharton MBA 2027 for International Students: Ranking, GMAT, Tuition, Scholarships and Deadlines
Wharton is #2 in U.S. News 2026. See the Class of 2027 GMAT average (735), 2026-27 cost ($135,441), merit fellowships, the Team Based Discussion, STEM majors and the 5 January 2027 Round 2 deadline.

Wharton MBA admission requirements for international students are the same as for US applicants: a GMAT or GRE score, two goal questions (50 and 150 words), one 350-word essay, one letter of recommendation, a one-page resume, transcripts and a $275 fee. If you did not study at an institution where English was the language of instruction, you also need a TOEFL iBT, IELTS, PTE or Duolingo score. Every admitted applicant, international or not, is considered for Wharton’s merit-based fellowships without a separate application.

Round 1 of the 2026-27 cycle closed on 8 September 2026. The deadline still open is Round 2, due 5 January 2027 at 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time, with decisions on 31 March 2027. Tuition for 2026-27 is $87,970, and Wharton’s full first-year budget is $135,441. Wharton is ranked #2 in the U.S. News 2026 Best Business Schools list. I checked each figure on Wharton’s own pages and its latest class profile and career report on 29 October 2026.

Wharton ranking

Wharton is #2 in the U.S. News 2026 Best Business Schools ranking for full-time MBA programmes, released on 7 April 2026. It was #1 in the 2025 edition and swapped places with Stanford this year. Chicago Booth is #3, with Harvard and Kellogg tied at #4.

Wharton is also the largest of the elite US programmes, with close to 900 students per class. That size gives you more electives, more clubs and a bigger alumni network than smaller schools.

Wharton acceptance rate and class profile

Wharton’s own profile page does not show an admit rate. For the Class of 2027, Wharton received 7,613 applications and enrolled 888 students, so about 12% of applicants ended up in the class. Leland’s April 2026 summary estimates the admit rate at about 21%, which is plausible because many admitted applicants go elsewhere. Treat that figure as an estimate.

Wharton does not publish a GMAT range for this class. The Class of 2026 profile shows work experience ranging from 1 to 17 years, so you do not need a fixed number of years, although the average sits at five. Undergraduate majors split almost evenly: 36% humanities, 32% STEM and 32% business.

Wharton MBA requirements for international applicants

  • Transcripts from every university. Unofficial copies or Wharton’s self-reported grade template are fine for the application; official ones are needed after admission. Records not in English need an authorised translation.
  • A one-page resume in PDF, under 10 MB, with no password.
  • GMAT or GRE score within the valid window for your round. For Round 2, the test must be taken between 5 January 2022 and 5 January 2027. The AWA is not required.
  • An English test if your degree was not taught in English.
  • The essays and one letter of recommendation.
  • The $275 fee.

English language requirement

Wharton accepts TOEFL iBT, PTE, IELTS and the Duolingo English Test. It may waive the test if you earned a degree from an institution where English was the language of instruction, which covers most graduates of universities in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Uganda and South Africa. The application guide does not publish minimum scores. Your test date has to fall inside the round’s window; for Round 1 it was 8 September 2024 to 8 September 2026, so English scores older than two years are not accepted.

Late Round 2 applications roll into Round 3. Late Round 3 applications are not accepted. The Lauder MBA/MA and Carey JD/MBA take applications in Rounds 1 and 2 only. The deferred round is the route used by the Moelis Advance Access Program.

Deadline

Round 2 closes at 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time on 5 January 2027. That is 10:00 p.m. GMT and 11:00 p.m. in Lagos and Kinshasa the same day. International applicants should treat Round 2 as the last practical round, because a Round 3 decision on 11 May 2027 leaves little time for the I-20 and an F-1 visa interview.

Wharton MBA essays 2026-2027 and how to answer them

PromptLimit
Essay 1a: What is your immediate post-MBA professional goal?50 words
Essay 1b: What are your medium- and long-term professional goals?150 words
Essay 2: How do you plan to add value to the Wharton community, given your personal, professional and/or academic background?350 words
Reapplicant essay: how you have reflected and grown since your last application250 words
Optional additional information500 words

Essay 1: your goals in 200 words

Fifty words is two sentences. Name the role, the type of organisation and the industry, and if you can, the region. Then use the 150 words to show where that leads and why it is believable given your background. Committees want goals that follow from what you have done, plus a plausible reason the MBA is the missing piece.

For illustration: “Immediately after Wharton, I will join a growth equity fund as an associate covering consumer businesses in West Africa, with a focus on companies moving from informal to formal retail.”

Essay 2: adding value to the Wharton community

Pick one or two things you will bring and show them with evidence from your past, then attach each one to something specific at Wharton: a club you would help run, a course discussion where your experience is rare, a trek you could organise. The question asks about “personal, professional and/or academic” background, so a personal story is fine as long as it leads to a concrete contribution.

For illustration: “In my second year at a Lagos fintech, I ran our customer support line for six weeks after half the team quit, and I learned more about how Nigerians actually use money than in any strategy meeting.”

Optional essay

Use the optional 500 words to explain a gap, a weak grade, an unusual grading system or why your recommender is not your current supervisor. Keep it factual and short.

Wharton interview: the Team Based Discussion

Interviews are by invitation only. The main part is the Team Based Discussion (TBD), a 35-minute virtual exercise with five or six randomly assigned applicants. Your group gets a prompt and has to reach a tangible outcome together. Wharton uses it to see how you communicate, engage, lead and make decisions in a team. Admissions sends the details well ahead of time.

After the TBD you have a 10-minute one-on-one with an admissions team member, mostly to reflect on how the group discussion went. Applicants to Lauder, Carey JD/MBA and Health Care Management do a second interview for the joint programme.

The trap in the TBD is trying to dominate. Groups reward the person who moves the team forward, for example by summarising, bringing in a quiet member or keeping time. Practise with a few friends on a video call so the format is familiar.

Wharton tuition and cost of attendance 2026-2027

First-year costAmount
Tuition$87,970
University fees$5,038
Housing$21,258
Food$9,287
Books and supplies$1,123
Transportation$1,044
Personal$4,703
Health insurance$5,018
Total$135,441

Penn’s Student Registration and Financial Services office lists $135,444 for the same year, a few dollars different because of rounding. Expect the two-year cost to be about $270,000 before fee increases.

Costs not covered

  • Application fee, GMAT or GRE, and English test fees.
  • F-1 visa and SEVIS fees and flights to Philadelphia.
  • Credential translation and courier costs for official transcripts.
  • Optional Global Immersion trips, treks and club conferences.
  • Furniture, a winter wardrobe and initial housing deposits.

Wharton scholarships for international students

  • Wharton Merit-Based Fellowships: every admitted applicant is considered at the point of admission. Criteria may include academic achievement, leadership, professional development and personal qualities. About one-third of each incoming class receives one, and awards are not reconsidered later.
  • External sponsorship: Wharton notes that a fellowship can reduce the amount of third-party sponsorship you receive, so tell the financial aid office about any employer funding.
  • Loans: Penn lists “Wharton Domestic and International Students Alternative Student Loans”. The page I checked does not name lenders or say whether a US cosigner is needed, so confirm with financialaid@wharton.upenn.edu.

Because Wharton’s fellowships are merit-based, your strongest move is a strong application: the test score, the essays and the TBD all feed into the fellowship decision. Look also at outside awards in our list of American scholarships for international students.

STEM-certified majors and OPT

Wharton does not designate the whole MBA as STEM. Instead, ten majors are STEM-certified: Artificial Intelligence for Business, Business Analytics, Business Economics and Public Policy, Business, Energy, Environment and Sustainability, Impact, Value and Sustainable Business, Individualized Major, Finance, Operations, Information and Decisions, Quantitative Finance, and Statistics and Data Science. Graduating in one of these lets an F-1 student apply for the STEM OPT extension, giving 36 months of post-completion OPT instead of 12. Finance is on the list, so a student aiming for finance roles can graduate STEM-eligible without changing plans.

Wharton MBA salary and employment

Class of 2025 outcomeFigure
Graduates seeking employment69.2% (608 of 879)

Accepted offers87%
Median salary$185,000, a school record
Financial services38.2% of hires, median $175,000
Consulting28.2%, median $190,000
Technology15.3%, median $164,250
Jobs in the US94%

About 6% of the class took jobs abroad, roughly 3% in Asia and 1% in Europe. The summary does not list top employers or separate figures for international students.

What the Wharton admissions committee looks for

Wharton tests teamwork directly through the TBD. The written application is short, so each piece counts: the single recommendation needs to come from someone who has managed you closely, and the goals answers need to be specific. A quantitative record matters too, because the Wharton core is heavy on finance and statistics. If your undergraduate maths is thin, a good GMAT or GRE quant score carries more weight.

Common mistakes international applicants make

  • Using the 50-word goal answer for background. It should state the job.
  • Writing Essay 2 about Wharton’s strengths instead of yours.
  • Choosing a famous recommender who has not supervised you.
  • Taking the English test too early so it falls outside the round’s window.
  • Over-talking in the TBD.
  • Ignoring the STEM major list when planning for OPT.
  • Missing the 5:00 p.m. Eastern cut-off.

Who should apply to Wharton

Wharton fits applicants who want finance, consulting or general management careers, who like a large class with many options, and who work well in teams. Its finance depth and STEM-certified majors make it a strong choice for international students who want to work in the US after graduating.

It fits less well if you want a small, close-knit cohort or if you dislike structured group assessment; schools like Stanford are smaller and interview one-on-one.
