UIUC Grainger Engineering Graduate Admission 2027 for International Students: Ranking, GRE, Funding and Deadlines

UIUC Grainger Engineering Graduate Admission 2027 for International Students: Ranking, GRE, Funding and Deadlines
Illinois Grainger is tied for No. 6 in the U.S. News 2026 engineering list. International applicants need a four-year degree, pay $90, face optional GRE in ECE and CEE, and get a five-year PhD funding guarantee; ECE closes 15 January 2027.

UIUC Grainger engineering graduate admission for international students goes through the University of Illinois Graduate College, but each department sets its own deadline and test rules. For fall 2027 the main research dates fall between 1 December 2026 and 15 January 2027, international applicants pay a $90 fee, and the GRE is optional in electrical and computer engineering and in civil and environmental engineering. You need a four-year bachelor’s degree; Grainger says three-year degrees are not eligible.

The Grainger College of Engineering at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is tied for No. 6 in the U.S. News 2026 Best Engineering Schools list. Its strongest selling point for international PhD applicants is a five-year funding guarantee that covers a full tuition waiver, part of your fees and a stipend. Master’s students mostly pay their own way, at $40,444 a year in 2026-27 tuition. Applicants with a degree from Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Uganda or another approved country earned in the last five years do not need TOEFL or IELTS for admission.

UIUC engineering ranking

The U.S. News 2026 Best Engineering Schools list, published on 7 April 2026, places Grainger in a three-way tie for No. 6 with Caltech and UT Austin. The overall rank is a starting point; the department and the faculty you would work with matter more when you choose.

Grainger graduate programmes

Grainger runs MS, MEng and PhD degrees across its departments. The ones I checked in detail are below.

DepartmentDegrees
Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE)MEng (coursework only), MS, direct PhD for bachelor’s holders, PhD for MS holders
Mechanical Science and Engineering (MechSE)MS and PhD in mechanical engineering and in theoretical and applied mechanics; MEng in mechanical engineering
Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE)MS, MEng and direct PhD; PhD for MS holders
Other Grainger departmentsAerospace, bioengineering, materials science, nuclear, plasma and radiological engineering, industrial and enterprise systems, and the Siebel School of Computing and Data Science, each with its own graduate programmes

You cannot apply for a master’s or PhD in a field where you already hold the same degree. CEE says a second master’s is only possible when the programmes differ a lot.

Grainger graduate admission requirements

  1. Online Graduate College application and the $90 fee (non-refundable).
  2. Statement of purpose: MechSE caps it at three pages.
  3. Resume or CV: MechSE caps it at two pages.
  4. Three recommendation letters, submitted online.
  5. Transcripts: unofficial copies are fine for review if they show the institution, your name, course titles and grades. Official transcripts are requested after admission.
  6. English scores sent directly by ETS or the testing agency (copies are not accepted), unless you are exempt.
  7. Department forms: ECE asks MS and PhD applicants for an interest form that opens two days after you submit. MechSE accepts an optional class rank form.
  8. Proof of funds: needed for the I-20; you can upload it after you apply.

The minimum for full-status admission is a 3.0/4.0 GPA. CEE measures it over the last two years of a four-year programme, which helps if you had a weak first year.

GRE policy by department

English requirements

TestLimited status (admission minimum)Full status

TOEFL iBT, earlier scores (0 to 120 scale)79103
IELTS Academic6.57.5
Duolingo English Test115135

Admits below the full-status line take an English placement test on arrival and may have to take non-credit ESL classes. ECE sets its own higher bar: TOEFL iBT 96 minimum (above 102 for full status) and IELTS 6.5 with 6.0 in every band (7.0 for full status). The university does not accept TOEFL Essentials, TOEFL MyBest or IELTS One Skill Retake.

You are exempt for admission if you hold a degree from the US or an approved country earned within five years of your start term, or if you completed two years of study or two years of professional work there in that period. African countries on the approved list are The Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Uganda and Zimbabwe. Tanzania, Zambia, Botswana and Cameroon are not on it, so applicants from those countries need a test.

The exemption covers admission only. To work as a teaching assistant you need a TOEFL speaking score of 5.0 on the new scale (24 on the old one) or IELTS speaking 8, or you must pass the university’s oral English interview. Duolingo does not count for teaching. The PhD funding guarantee also requires non-native speakers to pass an oral English test by 1 July for fall entry.

Grainger application deadlines 2026-27

DepartmentFall 2027Spring 2027 or 2028
ECE MS and PhDPriority 15 December 2026; final 15 January 20271 September 2027
MechSE MS and PhDPriority 15 December 2026; final 22 January 20272 October 2027
MechSE MEng15 May 2027 if seats remain (international applicants encouraged by 15 April 2027)1 October 2027
CEE (international applicants)Recommended 1 December 2026 for funding; final 15 February 2027Recommended 1 September 2027; final 1 October 2027

ECE’s page still shows its fall 2026 date (15 January 2026), and the spring 2027 deadlines have passed, so those rows show the same dates one year on (based on this year’s date; confirm on the official page when the call opens). MechSE and CEE list dates without a year. Every material, including letters and test scores, must arrive by the deadline.

Do not wait for the final date

Funding and fellowships are decided from the priority pool. ECE uses 15 December and CEE recommends 1 December. A file completed after the priority date can still be admitted, but funding is less likely.

Funding: the five-year PhD guarantee and MS reality

Every Grainger PhD student is guaranteed a funded appointment for fall and spring during the first five years. The appointment can be an assistantship, a fellowship or a mix, and it comes with:

  • a full tuition waiver;
  • a partial fee waiver covering service fees, library and technology fees, the facilities fee, health services fees (including dental and vision) and part of the health insurance fee;
  • a stipend, with summer support possible but not guaranteed.

You keep the guarantee by staying in your original programme, remaining in good academic standing and doing your assistantship work well. Grainger does not publish one stipend figure. The university HR page lists a minimum of $32,266.68 for a nine-month, half-time graduate assistantship, with rates effective 16 August 2025 while a new union agreement is negotiated.

MechSE says all on-campus MS and PhD applicants are considered for support automatically. In practice, most master’s and MEng students at Illinois are self-funded. The university-wide Carver Fellowship, worth $34,000 for fall, spring and summer with a tuition waiver, goes to a small number of incoming master’s and doctoral students; Grainger does not say whether it is open to international students, so ask. Our list of American scholarships for international students has outside options.

Tuition and proof of funds

2026-27 annual tuitionResidentInternational
Grainger Engineering and engineering-related programmes$21,272$40,444
MEng Bioengineering$22,788$41,968

Those figures are tuition only. Mandatory fees, housing and health insurance are extra, and Illinois points students to its cost calculator rather than publishing one total. For the I-20 you must show money for one full year from liquid sources: savings, current or deposit accounts, fully sanctioned student loans, provident funds or discretionary trusts. Bank statements need the bank’s letterhead, a stamp or signature, your name, the balance and the account type, dated within a year. Property deeds, investments and payslips are not accepted.

STEM OPT after graduation

Engineering degrees at Illinois fall under engineering fields on the US Department of Homeland Security’s STEM Designated Degree Program List, so F-1 graduates can normally add the 24-month STEM OPT extension to their first 12 months of OPT. The CIP code on your I-20 and an E-Verify employer are required, and federal policy can change, so confirm with the Illinois international student office.

How to contact potential PhD advisers

Research assistantships are paid from faculty grants, so a short email to the right professor before 15 December can help. Pick faculty whose last two years of papers match your skills and write one message each.

For illustration, an opening could read: “Dear Professor Adeyemi, I am applying to the Illinois ECE direct PhD for fall 2027. I read your group’s 2025 paper on low-power edge inference, and my final-year project ran a compressed image classifier on a $10 microcontroller in Ibadan. I would like to ask whether your group expects to take a new student.” The name and project are invented; replace them with real detail.

Writing the statement of purpose for Grainger

Illinois departments read a lot of files, so the first paragraph needs your research interest in plain words. After that, give two or three pieces of evidence (a project, a paper, an internship), say what you learned technically, and then name the Illinois faculty and labs that match. ECE has a separate interest form for listing faculty, so in the statement you can explain the connection rather than list names. Stay inside MechSE’s three-page limit even if your department has none. If your grades dipped, explain it in two sentences; the committee looks at the last two years in CEE anyway.

Common mistakes international applicants make

  1. Applying with a three-year degree: Grainger requires a four-year bachelor’s, so a three-year BSc alone does not qualify.
  2. Converting a CGPA to 4.0 yourself: give your transcript scale and class of degree and let the Graduate College evaluate it.
  3. Sending a photocopy of test scores: English scores must come straight from the testing agency.
  4. Assuming every African country is exempt: only the listed countries are.
  5. Booking Duolingo for a TA plan: Duolingo does not count for teaching assistant eligibility.
  6. Weak bank documents: unstamped printouts or property papers delay the I-20.

Costs not covered

  • The $90 application fee per programme.
  • Fees not on the waiver list, and part of the health insurance premium.
  • Summer living costs if you have no summer appointment.
  • Visa, SEVIS and flights.
  • Winter clothing and a deposit for off-campus housing in Champaign-Urbana.

Who should apply to Grainger

Apply if you have a four-year engineering degree, a GPA at or above 3.0/4.0 equivalent, and you want a PhD with funding you can count on for five years. Illinois also suits self-funded master’s students who want a large school with many electives at a lower tuition than most private peers. I would not apply if your degree is three years long without further study, or if you need a funded master’s; that is rare here.
