BC Carroll MBA ranking

U.S. News placed Carroll No. 53 among full-time MBA programmes in the 2026 edition, released on 7 April 2026, in a seven-way tie that includes Chapman, Tulane, Alabama, Kentucky, South Carolina and William & Mary. Poets&Quants ranks Carroll No. 55 in its own 2026 composite table. Boston College’s undergraduate business programme ranks far higher than its MBA, which helps the school’s brand with Boston employers.

BC Carroll MBA acceptance rate and class profile

Poets&Quants’ August 2026 data gives an acceptance rate of 54.8% for the 2025 entering class, after 57.7% in 2024 and 57.4% in 2023. About 35% of admitted applicants enrolled. Admission is within reach for a solid candidate; the competition is mostly for the larger scholarships.

Undergraduate majors are mixed: 33% humanities and social sciences, 21% business and 16% maths or physical sciences. Carroll’s FAQ mentions an average of about four and a half years of work experience for recent classes, which does not match the 3.7 years in the profile. Work experience is not required, but BC recommends at least two years.

BC Carroll MBA requirements for international students

  1. Degree: equivalent to a four-year U.S. bachelor’s degree.
  2. Transcripts: a self-reported transcript with course names in English at application. You do not need to convert your GPA to a 4.0 scale.
  3. Resume: one to two pages, with months and years for each role, matching the employment section of the form.
  4. One essay: up to 500 words, plus an optional essay.
  5. One recommendation: required, and up to three are accepted. A supervisor or colleague who sees your daily work is best.
  6. GMAT or GRE: scores from the past five years. GMAT code 44x-J5-96, GRE code 3033. Full-time applicants can ask for a test waiver before applying.
  7. English test: unless you qualify for a waiver.
  8. Application fee: $100, non-refundable.
  9. After admission: an official English translation of your credentials and a third-party degree verification, such as WES or SpanTran, with a course-by-course analysis and U.S. equivalency.

Carroll does not publish its test waiver criteria. If you have strong quantitative coursework and want to skip the test, request the waiver early so you still have time to book the GMAT if it is refused.

English requirements

TestCarroll minimum
TOEFL iBT (new scale)5
TOEFL iBT or Home Edition (traditional scale)100
IELTS7.5
PTE68
Duolingo English Test130

Scores must be from the past two years. These are high bars; an IELTS of 7.5 is above what most schools in this ranking band ask for.

You can skip the test if you completed a four-year bachelor’s or a two-year master’s entirely at an English-medium institution, with that shown on your transcript or in an official letter. You also qualify after two years of full-time work, after your degree, in the U.S. or a country where English is an official language. Working for an English-speaking company in a non-English country does not count. A graduate of a four-year Nigerian or Ghanaian degree should get the medium-of-instruction letter from the registrar before applying.

The first round, on 13 October 2026, has closed. Classes start in August 2027. Carroll reviews files on a rolling basis and considers late applications only if space remains.

International applicants

Carroll asks international candidates to apply by 19 January or 2 March 2027 so there is time for the I-20 and visa. The 11 May 2027 date is too late for most F-1 visa timelines.

How to apply, step by step

  1. Decide on the test: book the GMAT Focus or GRE, or ask Carroll for a waiver first.
  2. Sort English: book TOEFL, IELTS, PTE or Duolingo, or get a medium-of-instruction letter.
  3. Choose one strong recommender: add a second or third only if they add something new.
  4. Write the 500-word essay: and decide whether you need the optional one.
  5. Prepare the self-reported transcript and resume.
  6. Submit and pay $100: by 15 December 2026 or 19 January 2027.
  7. Say whether you want the STEM track: interest at application is non-binding, but the final choice is made when you pay your deposit.

How to write the BC Carroll MBA essay

The required essay, up to 500 words, asks about your past experiences, your short-term and long-term goals, and why you want a BC MBA. That is three questions in one, so plan the words: about 200 on your experience, 150 on goals, and 150 on why Carroll.

  • Experience: one or two achievements with numbers, and what they taught you.
  • Goals: a specific short-term role (function, industry, city) and a longer-term aim that follows from it.
  • Why BC: real features, such as the 70 to 90 person class, the STEM track’s data analytics sequence, Boston’s financial services and life sciences employers, or the 20 hours of community service built into the degree.

For illustration: “Two years ago I rebuilt the loan-pricing model at a Lagos microfinance bank and cut defaults by a fifth. I want to take that work to a Boston asset manager as an investment analyst, and later lead a fund that lends to small businesses in West Africa.”

Use the optional essay only to explain something the rest of the file leaves open, such as a gap, a weak grade or why your recommender is not your current boss.

The BC Carroll MBA interview

Carroll’s full-time MBA pages do not describe an interview, its format or whether it is invitation only. Plan for one anyway: practise a two-minute summary of your career, your goal and why BC, and be ready to explain any number in your resume. The admissions team also runs application support sessions and one-to-one chats, which are worth booking.

What the admissions committee looks for

  • Evidence you can handle the analytics-heavy core, through a test score or quantitative coursework.
  • Work experience with growing responsibility; two or more years is recommended.
  • Goals that fit Boston hiring, where financial services, healthcare and pharma, consulting and technology took most of the Class of 2025.
  • A specific reason for BC, which the essay asks for directly.
  • Good English: BC’s minimums are among the highest in this ranking band.

BC Carroll MBA tuition and cost 2026-2027

2026-27 cost item (nine-month year)Amount
Tuition$70,390 ($35,195 a semester)
Graduate student activity fee$146 ($73 a semester)
BC ID card fee (new students)$50
Medical insurance$4,723
Housing$17,204
Food$5,973
Transportation$1,800
Personal expenses$2,651
Books and supplies$1,300
Estimated totalAbout $104,237

The total is my sum of Carroll’s line items. Over two years, plan for more than $200,000 before scholarships.

Costs not covered by tuition

  • Rent above Carroll’s housing estimate; Boston rents are high and you may need a deposit and first month up front.
  • Summer living costs between the first and second year.
  • Winter clothing if you come from a warm country.
  • Visa fees (SEVIS I-901 and the visa application fee) and flights.
  • Credential evaluation by WES or SpanTran after admission.
  • Test and score-sending fees.

BC Carroll MBA scholarships for international students

Carroll says all domestic and international full-time applicants are considered for merit scholarships, which range from $7,500 to full tuition, and that more than 95% of the class receives one. Graduate assistantships, often paired with scholarships, pay a stipend for research or administrative work. Named awards include:

  • Dean’s Scholarships: for exceptionally strong MBA, MSA and MSF candidates.
  • Graduate Women in Business Fellowship: needs a 3.0 GPA and an essay.
  • Diane H. Weiss MBA ’85 Memorial Fellowship: second preference to students focused on mission-driven work.
  • Michael F. Price Fellowship: for a full-time graduate student.
  • ROMBA Fellowship: two awards, requested through the application essay.
  • John J. McMullen Fellowship: U.S. Naval Academy graduates only.

Carroll does not say whether each named fellowship is open to international students, and it does not list Prodigy, MPOWER or other loans without a U.S. cosigner. For outside money, see our list of the best American scholarships for international students.

STEM designation and OPT

Boston College approved a STEM-designated track for the full-time MBA in fall 2022. It costs nothing extra and keeps the 57-credit total, built around three data analytics courses, operations management and approved electives. You must choose it when you submit your enrolment form and deposit, and you cannot switch in later. International students on the track may qualify for the 24-month STEM OPT extension after the standard 12 months of OPT. If you are an international student, I see no reason to skip it.

Recent hiring employers include Amazon, Bank of America, Deloitte, EY, Fidelity Investments, Goldman Sachs, Johnson & Johnson, JP Morgan Chase, McKinsey, Pfizer, PwC, State Street, Takeda and Visa. The figures cover both students with permanent U.S. work rights and those without; Carroll does not publish separate results for international students and advises them to job-hunt in the U.S. and in countries where they already have work rights.

Common mistakes international applicants make

  1. Applying in May: too late for a visa in most countries.
  2. Underestimating the English bar: IELTS 7.5 or TOEFL 100.
  3. Assuming a test waiver: criteria are not published, so ask early.
  4. Forgetting the STEM track at deposit time: you cannot add it later.
  5. Writing a generic “why BC” paragraph: the essay asks for it directly.
  6. Sending three similar recommendations: one strong letter is all that is required.
  7. Ignoring the degree-equivalence rule: three-year degrees may not be treated as equal to a U.S. bachelor’s.

Who should apply to BC Carroll, and who shouldn’t

Apply if you want a small, personal MBA with access to Boston’s finance, healthcare and consulting employers, have strong English, and plan to take the STEM track. The near-universal merit awards make it more affordable than the sticker price suggests.

Look elsewhere if you want a large international community (18% is below several peers), cannot reach IELTS 7.5, or need a programme shorter than two years.
