Washington and Lee University Admission Requirements for International Students 2027: Acceptance Rate, Tuition, Scholarships and Deadlines

Washington and Lee University Admission Requirements for International Students 2027: Acceptance Rate, Tuition, Scholarships and Deadlines
Washington and Lee is need-blind for international applicants and meets full need without loans. Here are the 13.5% acceptance rate, 2026-27 costs, the Johnson Scholarship, English and testing rules, and the fall 2027 deadlines.

Washington and Lee University admission requirements for international students are a Common App, Coalition App or QuestBridge application, your internal school transcript, official results of any external exams such as WASSCE, IGCSE or CBSE, two teacher recommendations, a counselor recommendation and proof of English proficiency. SAT and ACT scores are optional for students entering in fall 2027. W&L, as everyone calls it, is a private liberal arts university in Lexington, Virginia.

For international families, the most useful fact is that W&L is need-blind in admission for all applicants, international students included, and it meets 100% of demonstrated need without loans. It admitted 13.5% of applicants for the Class of 2029, and its Johnson Scholarship pays tuition, housing, food and $10,000 for a summer experience. The Early Decision I deadline for fall 2027 is 1 November 2026, and the Johnson Scholarship deadline is 1 December 2026. I checked the details below on W&L’s own pages on 29 October 2026.

Washington and Lee University ranking

W&L is tied #12 among National Liberal Arts Colleges in the U.S. News 2027 edition, released on 22 September 2026, according to Virginia Business. It was the highest-ranked Virginia school on that list. The U.S. News site itself blocks automated reading, so I took the rank from that report.

Washington and Lee acceptance rate and class profile

W&L’s fast facts page gives the admission figures for the Class of 2029 (fall 2025). Its Class of 2030 announcement, published on 9 September 2026, gives application and aid numbers but no admit rate yet.

The student paper, The Ring-tum Phi, reported in October 2025 that international applications rose about 25% after W&L went need-blind, while the international share of the enrolled class stayed at 9%. W&L does not publish a separate acceptance rate for international applicants, but those two numbers together suggest the international pool is now more competitive than the overall 13.5% rate.

Washington and Lee tuition for international students (2026-27)

These are W&L’s published undergraduate costs for 2026-27.

Cost item (2026-27)Amount
Tuition$73,575
Activity fees$715
Technology fee$320
Health services fee$250
Housing$10,580
Food$9,995
Books and supplies$1,900
Personal and miscellaneous$2,545
Standard cost of attendance$99,880

W&L’s total leaves out health insurance, travel and fraternity or sorority membership, so an international student should budget more than $99,880. W&L does not publish an international travel allowance.

Washington and Lee scholarships for international students: how aid works

W&L is one of the few American colleges where an international student’s need for money does not count against them in admission.

  • Need-blind for everyone: W&L switched to need-blind admission in November 2024, after a $132 million gift from alumnus Bill Miller. Its vice president for admissions told The Ring-tum Phi the policy covers international applicants, and W&L’s international aid page says the university is need-blind in its admission decisions.
  • Full need, no loans: W&L meets 100% of demonstrated need for every admitted student, and aid is loan-free. International grants range from several thousand dollars up to the full yearly cost.
  • Four-year International Grant: your grant is set from your first-year aid application, lasts four years and rises dollar for dollar with any W&L tuition increase. You do not send new documents each year.
  • No later aid: the grant cannot be negotiated after you accept the offer, and if you enrol without a grant you cannot get one in later years.
  • Merit through one door: all W&L merit money is awarded through the Johnson Scholarship Program, and international students are eligible for both merit and need-based aid.

W&L also announced in August 2026 that, from fall 2027, families earning under $200,000 pay no tuition and families under $75,000 pay no tuition, housing or food. The announcement does not say whether this pledge covers international families. Because W&L already meets full need for international students, a low-income international family should end up with similar support either way, but do not quote the pledge to anyone as an international guarantee.

The Johnson Scholarship

  • What it pays: tuition and fees, housing and food, and $10,000 for a summer experience, worth more than $89,000 a year. Winners with extra need can get more for books, travel and technology.
  • How many: up to 44 entering students a year, about 10% of the class.
  • How to apply: submit your application with the Johnson essay (800 words or fewer) by 1 December 2026, with supplemental materials due 15 December. You do not need to apply Early Decision.
  • Selection: finalists are invited to a campus event that W&L pays for, where they stay with a current Johnson Scholar, attend classes and interview with faculty, staff and students. W&L’s page says finalists hear in early February and winners in mid-March, though another part of the page says late March.

How to apply for W&L financial aid as an international student

  1. Complete the CSS Profile: W&L’s CSS code is 5887. If the CSS fee is a hardship, request a CSS Profile fee waiver through the applicant portal.
  2. Meet the aid deadline for your round: 1 December 2026 for ED I, 15 January 2027 for ED II and 15 February 2027 for Regular Decision.
  3. Watch the one-week rule: if you asked for a fee waiver and are admitted, the waiver decision comes with your admission decision, and you then have one week to submit the CSS Profile.
  4. Ask for everything you need now: there is no second chance at a grant after you enrol.

Early Decision AgreementED applicants only

English requirements

W&L asks every applicant to show English proficiency in one or more of these ways:

  • All years of secondary school taught in English.
  • An IB Diploma English A course with a score of 6 or 7.
  • The Duolingo English Test (official score reports only).
  • IELTS.
  • TOEFL iBT.
  • An InitialView interview.

W&L publishes typical scores for successful applicants, not hard minimums: Duolingo 130, IELTS 7 and TOEFL 100 for tests taken before January 2026 or 5 on the new TOEFL scale. Proof is due by 15 November 2026 for ED I, 1 December 2026 for Johnson applicants, 15 January 2027 for ED II and 1 February 2027 for Regular Decision. If your whole secondary education was in English, as it is in most WAEC schools in Anglophone West Africa, the first route covers you.

Interviews

W&L strongly encourages international applicants to submit an unscripted, recorded InitialView interview, but it is optional because it costs money. Fee waivers may be available through programmes such as HALI Access Network and LALA. W&L also invites a small number of applicants to interview; an invitation does not signal a decision.

W&L’s international page lists the dates without years; its English policy page confirms 15 November 2026, 1 December 2026, 15 January 2027 and 1 February 2027 for the same cycle.

Deadline

Regular Decision and Early Decision II share an application deadline of 5 January 2027. If you want Johnson Scholarship consideration, your application and Johnson essay must be in by 1 December 2026, whatever round you choose.

How to write the W&L supplemental essays

W&L’s supplement page, posted for the most recent cycle, has two optional parts. The first is a “Why W&L?” statement of 250 words or fewer about how you got to know the university and what excites you about its community. The second is a short answer of 250 words or fewer, or a video of up to two minutes, on one of four themes: life outside school, a form of diversity you would bring, how your curious mind works, or the story of a name you go by. Check the wording in your application, as W&L may update it.

The Johnson Scholarship essay is the bigger piece. For 2026-27 you choose one of five prompts and write up to 800 words. The options cover a work of art that has shaped you, a time your path was not straight, a picture that shows the real you (described in words only), a four-week Spring Term course you would design, and the norms of your home community you have become aware of and how you would use that knowledge.

For both, use specifics. W&L students take a four-week Spring Term with only one course, and the Williams School puts business teaching beside the liberal arts in the same undergraduate degree. If one of those really matches your plans, say how. For the Spring Term prompt, design a course you could actually teach a friend, and name the readings, place or fieldwork.

A sample opening for the Johnson path prompt, for illustration only:

“I planned to study chemistry in Accra. Then the school’s only chemistry teacher moved to Kumasi, and I spent a year learning it from YouTube and a retired pharmacist named Mr. Owusu.”

The essay would go on to show what that detour taught the writer about learning without a set path, and end with how that habit would carry into W&L classes.

What happens after you apply

  1. Supplemental items: send English proof, test scores if any, and remaining documents by your round’s supplemental deadline.
  2. Aid file: finish the CSS Profile by your aid deadline, or within one week of admission if you asked for a fee waiver.
  3. Johnson review: finalists are invited to campus in early spring at W&L’s expense.
  4. Decision: late December for ED I, late January for ED II and by 1 April for Regular Decision, with your four-year International Grant if you qualify.
  5. Commit and visa: once you enrol, W&L issues the I-20 for your F-1 visa interview.

Common mistakes international applicants make

  • Assuming need-aware rules: many students stay away from aid forms for fear of hurting their chances. At W&L asking for aid does not affect admission, so apply for it.
  • Missing the Johnson deadline: 1 December 2026 is earlier than Regular Decision, and the Johnson application is the only route to any W&L merit money.
  • Leaving out external exam results: W&L wants official WASSCE, IGCSE or other results, and predicted grades for exams still to come.
  • Sending documents in French or Portuguese: everything must be in English, so arrange certified translations early.
  • Expecting to add aid later: if you enrol without a grant, you cannot get one in later years.
  • Skipping the optional essays: at a 13.5% admit rate, optional writing is your chance to stand out.

Costs that aid does not cover

  • English test, InitialView interview and CSS Profile fees (unless waived).
  • Visa and SEVIS fees, passport costs and flights; travel is outside W&L’s cost total.
  • Health insurance, which W&L also leaves out of its cost total; check the amount with W&L before you budget.
  • Fraternity or sorority dues if you join, which are not counted in the cost total.
  • Winter clothing for the Shenandoah Valley, and any car, since Lexington is a small town with limited transport.

Majors, campus and town

W&L has 1,912 undergraduates and 369 law students (2025-26), a 7:1 student-faculty ratio and classes that are under 20 students 80% of the time. Undergraduates study in two divisions, the College and the Williams School (business), and 41% major or minor in both. The university was founded in 1749 and has an endowment of $2.19 billion. Lexington is a town of just over 7,000 people in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley.

Washington and Lee graduate admissions

W&L’s only graduate school is its School of Law, with 369 students in 2025-26. Law applicants apply separately through the law school and the LSAC system, with their own deadlines and aid rules; the need-blind undergraduate policy and the Johnson Scholarship do not apply. For other graduate funding, see our Fulbright scholarship guide.

Only W&L and Bowdoin in this group are need-blind for international students, and W&L is the only one with a full-cost merit scholarship open to them. Davidson is the closest Southern alternative. Who should apply to Washington and Lee

Apply if you want a small, traditional campus with close teaching and a business school inside a liberal arts college, and if your family cannot pay the full price. Need-blind admission plus full need without loans is about as good as aid gets for an international student. Strong writers with real leadership records should also try for the Johnson Scholarship.

It is a weaker fit if you want a city, a large international community or a very diverse social scene; Lexington is a quiet small town, and W&L lists fraternity and sorority membership as a separate cost, which tells you Greek life is part of campus. I would apply alongside other need-blind or full-need colleges, such as those in our Yale scholarships and Amherst financial aid guides.
